AB de Villiers Raises Concerns About Hardik Pandya's Captaincy Style at Mumbai Indians

AB de Villiers Raises Concerns About Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Style at Mumbai Indians

Former South African captain AB de Villiers has raised concerns about Hardik Pandya’s captaincy approach at Mumbai Indians, suggesting that Pandya’s ego-driven style may not be suitable for a team with experienced players.

De Villiers, who played alongside Pandya at Royal Challengers Bangalore, believes that Pandya’s leadership style, which he described as “bravado” and “ego-driven,” may have worked well with the relatively inexperienced squad of Gujarat Titans, but it could be less effective with the more experienced Mumbai Indians team.

“I don’t think how he walks on the field is always genuine, but he has decided that is his way of captaincy,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel. “Almost like MS. Cool, calm, collective, always got your chest out. But when you play with a lot of experienced players, guys who have been around for ages… They don’t buy into that.”

De Villiers’ comments come amid reports that senior players at Mumbai Indians have expressed concerns about Pandya’s captaincy style, which they believe has led to a decline in the team’s morale during the IPL season.

According to an Indian Express report, senior players Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav held a meeting following a loss in which they expressed their concerns about Pandya’s leadership. Individual meetings were also held to determine the underlying problem.

A Mumbai Indians official attributed the team’s struggles this season to the transitional phase that they are in, following the departure of long-time captain Rohit Sharma. “These are regular teething problems for a team that sees leadership change. This happens in sports all the time,” the official said.

It remains to be seen whether Pandya will adjust his captaincy style in response to the concerns raised by senior players. Mumbai Indians have struggled in recent seasons, finishing fifth in 2021, tenth in 2022, and ninth in 2023. They are currently fourth in the IPL standings this season, but their playoff hopes are hanging in the balance.

Neeraj Chopra Prioritizes Training Over Stardom Ahead of Diamond League Debut

Neeraj Chopra Prioritizes Training Over Stardom Ahead of Diamond League Debut

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, India’s golden boy in javelin throw, has acknowledged the challenges of balancing his stardom with his training and competition schedule. The 26-year-old superstar, who is also the reigning world and Asian Games champion, is set to kick off his season with the first leg of the Diamond League on Friday.

Chopra, who has spent the majority of the past few months training abroad in South Africa, Turkey, and Switzerland, expressed his desire to prioritize his sport over social obligations. “For me, my sport is more important,” he said. “It’s good for my profile if I play in India, but there are too many functions and marriage functions. I also want to join my family and friends, but more than that, I want to train in an Olympic year.”

Chopra’s stardom has undoubtedly elevated the stature of athletics in India. “It’s not like cricketers, like Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni, but a lot of people know me,” he said. “I go to India sometimes, people know me, which is good for athletics. People know about athletics and follow athletics because of the Olympic gold.”

Despite the recognition, Chopra remains focused on his ultimate goal: breaking the elusive 90m mark. “About 90m, last year I said I will throw 90 and threw 88. This year, I don’t want to say, I want to show,” he said. “People have been asking me this question since 2018, when I threw 88.06 at the Asian Games. But, a lot of things happened, my elbow injury, the surgery, and now I have been stuck between 88 and 90m.”

Chopra is aware of the expectations that come with his status as an Olympic champion, but he tries to focus on his technique. “Obviously, it is the Olympics year and India is a big country and everyone expects gold,” he said. “But, it’s really hard in Olympics because the best from the world are competing with you.”

“My focus is to just stay healthy and concentrate on my technique. And yes, if I stay healthy everything will be good.”

India Women Complete 5-0 Sweep of Bangladesh in T20I Series

India Women Complete 5-0 Sweep of Bangladesh in T20I Series

India’s women’s cricket team completed a comprehensive 5-0 series sweep against Bangladesh with a 21-run victory in the fifth and final T20I in Sylhet on Thursday.

After posting a competitive 156 for five, India’s bowlers, led by Radha Yadav’s three-wicket haul, restricted Bangladesh to 136 for six.

Richa Ghosh’s quickfire unbeaten 28 off 17 balls provided the impetus for India’s total. The wicketkeeper-batter struck three fours and a six to help India recover from a mid-innings wobble.

Smriti Mandhana (33) and Dayalan Hemalatha (37) had earlier laid the foundation with a 60-run partnership for the third wicket.

Bangladesh’s chase began promisingly, with Sobhana Mostary hitting three fours in the first over. However, Yadav’s athletic catch to dismiss Mostary set the tone for India’s bowling performance.

Yadav then removed Dilara Akter, Nigar Sultana, and Rubya Haider in quick succession to leave Bangladesh reeling at 52 for five.

Ritu Moni (37) and Shorifa Khatun (28 not out) staged a brief fightback with a 57-run stand for the sixth wicket. However, Asha Sobhana broke the partnership by dismissing Moni in the 17th over.

Despite the rearguard action, Bangladesh fell short of the target, handing India a comfortable victory.

Yadav finished as the series’ leading wicket-taker with 10 dismissals, while Mandhana was the leading run-scorer with 116 runs.

Mbappe's PSG Farewell: Last Home Game Before Real Madrid Move

Mbappe’s PSG Farewell: Last Home Game Before Real Madrid Move

Kylian Mbappe’s illustrious seven-year tenure at Paris Saint-Germain is drawing to a close, with the French superstar set to depart the club at the end of the season. Mbappe’s final home game for PSG will be against Toulouse on Sunday, a bittersweet occasion following the team’s disappointing exit from the Champions League.

Despite PSG’s dominance in domestic competitions, winning 10 Ligue 1 titles in the past 12 seasons, European glory has eluded them. Mbappe’s departure will mark the end of an era for the club, as he has been a key figure in their recent successes.

Mbappe’s decision to leave PSG was made known to the club in February, but the 25-year-old has remained tight-lipped about his future destination. Real Madrid is widely believed to be his next stop, but no official confirmation has been made.

In the meantime, Mbappe and PSG will aim to finish the season on a high note. They have already secured the Ligue 1 title and will receive the trophy after Sunday’s game against Toulouse. The French Cup final against Lyon on May 25 remains their last chance for silverware this season.

Despite PSG’s Champions League disappointment, Mbappe has had a stellar campaign, scoring 43 goals in all competitions. He is on track to finish as Ligue 1’s top scorer for the sixth consecutive year, a testament to his exceptional talent.

Mbappe’s departure will leave a significant void in PSG’s attack, but the club will hope to build a new era of success without their star player. The French Cup final will be an opportunity for Mbappe to bid farewell to the PSG faithful and leave a lasting legacy at the club.

Punjab Kings' Playoff Hopes Dim After Fielding Blunders Against RCB

Punjab Kings’ Playoff Hopes Dim After Fielding Blunders Against RCB

Punjab Kings’ Playoff Hopes Dwindle After Disastrous Start Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru

In a crucial encounter at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Punjab Kings’ playoff aspirations took a significant blow as they faced a disappointing start against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Opting to field first, Punjab Kings’ fielding woes were evident from the outset. They dropped three vital catches in the opening five overs, including two off Virat Kohli. Kohli’s initial reprieve came on 0 when Ashutosh Singh failed to hold onto a skied ball at point. He was offered another chance on 10 when Rilee Rossouw couldn’t hold onto a powerful shot at short cover.

Rajat Patidar was also dropped on 0 in the fifth over, as Harshal Patel let slip a straightforward catch at deep backward square leg. These fielding lapses proved costly as both Kohli and Patidar went on to play significant roles in RCB’s innings.

The match is a must-win for both teams to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The loser will become the second team eliminated after Mumbai Indians. It is also the final league game of the season in Dharamsala and the last home game for the Punjab Kings.

Punjab Kings’ fielding woes have been a recurring theme throughout the season. They have dropped the most catches among all teams in the tournament, which has contributed to their struggles.

RCB, on the other hand, have been in impressive form in recent matches. They have won their last three games and will be confident of extending their winning streak against a struggling Punjab Kings side.

Joselu's Twin Strikes Send Real Madrid to Champions League Final

Joselu’s Twin Strikes Send Real Madrid to Champions League Final

Real Madrid’s dramatic comeback victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final was a testament to their unwavering spirit and the brilliance of their veteran striker, Joselu.

After trailing for much of the match, Real Madrid found themselves on the brink of elimination with just minutes remaining. However, Joselu’s twin strikes in the dying moments turned the tide and sent the Santiago Bernabeu into raptures.

Joselu’s journey to this moment has been a testament to his perseverance and determination. After making his debut for Real Madrid in 2009, he embarked on a nomadic career that took him to several clubs across Europe. Despite his travels, Joselu never lost sight of his dream of making a mark on the biggest stage.

On Wednesday night, that dream became a reality. Joselu’s first goal came from a fortunate bounce off Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but his second was a clinical finish that showcased his predatory instincts.

Real Madrid’s victory was also a reminder of their uncanny ability to find a way to win in the Champions League. Despite being outplayed for much of the match, they managed to pull off another miraculous comeback.

Joselu’s performance was a perfect embodiment of Real Madrid’s fighting spirit. The 34-year-old striker never gave up, and his goals ultimately proved to be the difference.

Gujarat Titans Struggle Under Shubman Gill's Captaincy, Kirsten Calls for Balance in IPL

Gujarat Titans Struggle Under Shubman Gill’s Captaincy, Kirsten Calls for Balance in IPL

The Gujarat Titans, under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, achieved remarkable success in the Indian Premier League (IPL), reaching consecutive finals in 2022 and 2023. However, the team’s fortunes have taken a downturn under the captaincy of Shubman Gill this season, as they find themselves at the bottom of the table with seven losses and only four wins in 11 games.

A significant challenge for the Titans has been the lack of runs from Gill. In the last five outings, Gill has struggled to make an impact with the bat, registering three single-digit scores and a highest score of only 35. This dip in form has added to the team’s woes and contributed to their disappointing performance this season.

Gujarat Titans batting coach Gary Kirsten, however, felt that Gill has enjoyed the leadership role, but captaincy is something that takes time to master. “I think he’s enjoyed the captaincy, it’s something that takes time to really master, but I think he’s enjoyed it this season,” Kirsten said. “He’s a world-class player, I have no doubt that in the next three games he’s going to put in one or two really good performances.”

Kirsten also acknowledged the challenge of replacing the injured Mohammed Shami, who has been a pivotal pace weapon for the team, particularly during the powerplay overs, over the past two seasons. “I think you do miss players. Obviously someone like a Shami who was big for us in the last two years, that kind of a player is difficult to replace. You can’t replace world-class bowlers like that.”

“There are some talented young bowlers in our group, but it takes time to find your feet against guys that are wanting to trade every ball for six.”

The South African said the Powerplay has exposed the bowling of many teams this season. “That’s an area where I think all the teams have been exposed. The powerplay has been a tough place to bowl this season. But saying that, a little bit in the wicket, you nick a few batters off and anything can happen.”

“Ahmedabad is traditionally a wicket that does a little bit up-front. So, tomorrow it could turn around and the seamers can get some wickets for us and we can get 2-3 wickets quite quickly and then the whole game changes.”

GT are technically still in the mix though with a maximum tally of 14 points, it would be very difficult for them to qualify. Kirsten wants his team to produce a “solid” show in the last 3 games. “We haven’t played the kind of cricket we know that we can play. There are certain components of our game that haven’t been as consistent as in the past. So for the last three games, we just want to play solid cricket in all departments of the game, because if you don’t, you’ll get exposed.”

“So hopefully one or two guys put in some match-winning performances tomorrow and we can play a good game of cricket.”

Kirsten said his team will need to find a way to take wickets in the Powerplay so that spinners can come into the picture. “If we bowl reasonably well in the power play, it helps our spinners big time because then the spinners can bowl to new batters, which makes a big difference.”

As a purist who values the balance between bat and ball, Kirsten is concerned about the overwhelming dominance of batters in the current IPL season. He urges the BCCI to explore ways to restore equilibrium between batting and bowling in the league.

This season has been particularly challenging for bowlers, with IPL teams achieving 250-plus totals on eight occasions, indicating a significant advantage for the batsmen. Kirsten’s sentiments reflect a broader concern within the cricketing community regarding the need to maintain the integrity and competitiveness of the game by ensuring a fair balance between batting and bowling prowess in T20 cricket.

Ireland Men Face T20 World Cup on Expired Contracts Amid Contract Negotiations

Ireland Men Face T20 World Cup on Expired Contracts Amid Contract Negotiations

Ireland’s men’s cricket team faces the prospect of playing in next month’s T20 World Cup on expired central contracts as negotiations between Cricket Ireland (CI) and the Irish Cricketers’ Association (ICA) continue.

CI announced its central contracts for 2023-24 in March 2023, with 14 men’s players signing two-year deals and seven others signing one-year contracts. However, those contracts expired at the end of February, and players have been playing under the terms of those deals since, which have rolled over indefinitely until negotiations for 2024-25 are complete.

According to The Irish Times, male players rejected CI’s most recent contract offer last week, while centrally-contracted female players delayed their decision until after the recently-concluded T20 World Cup Qualifiers.

Ireland’s men have a busy schedule over the next two weeks, playing seven T20Is between May 10-24 against Pakistan, Netherlands, and Scotland. They will then fly to the United States for the T20 World Cup, where they face India, Pakistan, USA, and Canada in Group A.

A spokesperson for CI declined to comment while negotiations were ongoing, and the ICA did not respond when contacted by ESPNcricinfo. It is understood that players are seeking pay rises, which will be back-dated to March if approved and when contracts are eventually signed.

CI recently announced its men’s and women’s home fixtures for 2024, following a long delay due to the late sign-off of their budget. Funding and logistical issues have caused the cancellation of an incoming men’s tour by Australia and a men’s white-ball series against Zimbabwe, while their men’s ‘home’ series against South Africa will be staged in Abu Dhabi.

Indian Shooters Disappoint at ISSF World Cup in Baku

Indian Shooters Disappoint at ISSF World Cup in Baku

Indian shooters continued their disappointing performance at the ISSF World Cup in Baku, with none of the skeet exponents in both men’s and women’s events qualifying for the finals.

In the men’s skeet event, Asian Games silver medalist Anant Jeet Singh Naruka finished 15th with a qualifying score of 120/125. Veteran marksman Mairaj Ahmad Khan, 48, managed only 105 and finished 76th among 80 shooters. Sheeraz Sheikh finished 54th with an aggregate of 115.

In the women’s skeet event, Raiza Dhillon finished 16th with an aggregate of 114/125, while Maheshwari Chauhan was 20th with 113 points. Ganemat Sekhon finished 25th with 111 points.

The Indian trap shooters had also failed to impress earlier in the World Cup, with none of them making it to the finals. Vivaan Kapoor narrowly missed the six-shooter finals, finishing seventh, while Prithvi Tondaiman finished 24th and Bhowneesh Mendiratta finished 39th. Veteran Zoravar Singh Sandhu finished 52nd.

Olympic quota winner Rajeshwari Kumari finished 23rd in trap with a qualification round score of just 108/125, while Shreyasi Singh managed only 107.

The dismal performance of the Indian shooters in Baku is a cause for concern, as it comes just months before the Tokyo Olympics. The shooters will need to improve their form significantly if they want to challenge for medals at the Games.

Nadal Roars Back in Rome, Sets Up Hurkacz Clash

Nadal Roars Back in Rome, Sets Up Hurkacz Clash

Rafael Nadal, the legendary Spanish tennis player, has made a remarkable comeback at the Internazional BNL d’Italia in Rome. After losing the first set to Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs, Nadal rallied back to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. This victory marks Nadal’s 70th win in Rome and sets up an intriguing second-round clash with No. 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz.

Nadal, who has never lost two consecutive matches on clay, started the match slowly but gradually found his rhythm. The 10-time champion delighted the Campo Centrale crowd with his trademark shots, including a stunning stop-drop-and-roll point in the third set.

Despite his recent injury struggles, Nadal has shown flashes of his best form this season. He reached the fourth round of the Mutua Madrid Open and spoke optimistically about his progress ahead of the Rome tournament.

Bergs, ranked 103rd in the ATP rankings, played well above his ranking, winning the first set with strong serving and aggressive play. However, Nadal’s experience and resilience proved too much for the Belgian qualifier.

In the second set, Nadal held off Bergs’ attempts to break back and forced a third set. The decider was a tense affair, with Bergs fighting back from a double-break deficit to level the score at 4-4.

Nadal’s determination and fighting spirit shone through as he reeled off the next five points to hold serve and then broke Bergs again to take the match.

Nadal’s victory in Rome is a testament to his enduring greatness and his ability to overcome adversity. He will now face Hurkacz in the second round, a player who has been in impressive form this season.
