India’s World Cup Qualifier Hopes Hit by Ralte’s Exam Conflict

Lalengmawia Ralte, a key midfielder for the Indian national football team, faces a potential dilemma as his university examination conflicts with India’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on June 6. The match holds immense significance as India aims to qualify for the third round of a World Cup qualifying cycle for the first time.

Ralte, who has earned 18 senior team caps, has reportedly requested to be excused from the preparatory camp due to his exam. However, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has asked him to discuss the matter with head coach Igor Stimac.

In addition to Ralte’s potential absence, India may also miss Akash Mishra, Rahul KP, and Mohammed Yasir due to injuries. Skipper Sunil Chhetri could also join the camp later than May 10 due to a family illness.

Ralte’s absence would be a significant blow to India’s midfield. In the recently concluded Indian Super League (ISL) season, he played a pivotal role for Mumbai City FC, boasting an 85% passing accuracy and creating 17 chances. He was named player of the match in the final against Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

Mumbai City coach Petr Krakty praised Ralte’s performance, saying, “Apuiah (Ralte’s nickname) handled the team fantastically.” He added that Ralte deserves “a bit more recognition” despite other Indian players scoring goals.

India’s chances of qualifying for the third round of the World Cup qualifiers hinge on the results of their matches against Kuwait and Qatar. A victory against Kuwait would boost their hopes, while a defeat could jeopardize their chances.

The AIFF is hopeful that Ralte will be able to resolve the conflict between his exam and the national team’s commitments. However, if he is unable to participate, India will have to find a suitable replacement to fill the void in their midfield.

“Whenever you’re playing you want to be be as consistent as you can, you want to be getting runs. It’s nice to be among the runs been nice to be playing well. That’s not going to guarantee anything in the West Indies but it gives me the best chance to be in a very good mindset,” said Head.

“Working hard on training and I think we face a fair bit of spin in the Caribbean and wickets might become tougher as the tournament goes. So very pleased with how I played spin tonight, things that I’m working on in training are somewhat working in the moment,” he added.

Sharma has also earned high praise from West Indies legend Brian Lara, who is a former coach of SRH. “Again he is someone who I met while I was batting coach of SRH. I spent two years there. I am allowed to a bit biased when I see a left-hander, I just love a left-hander.”

“Myself and Abhishek have developed a very good relationship, these youngsters are very humble. they want to learn,” Lara had said.

“I have to call them out. This is not a five runs per over wicket. Somebody needed to show intent. They had one of the slowest powerplays. That took the innings nowhere. When the opposition team has Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, your intention should be to go at 10s and over. 160-170 will never be enough,” Hayden said.

LSG captain KL Rahul admitted that his team was “lost for words” after the carnage from the SRH batters. Head and Abhishek Sharma took the LSG bowlers to the cleaners, leading SRH to a comfortable victory in just 9.4 overs.

“We have watched that kind of batting on TV. But this is unreal batting. Everything seemed to find the middle of the bat. Kudos to their skills. They have worked hard on their six-hitting skills. They didn’t give us a chance to know what the pitch played in the second innings,” Rahul said.

Rahul also acknowledged that LSG was short on runs and that the team’s momentum was hampered by the loss of wickets in the powerplay.

“Was hard to stop them as they teed off from ball one. Once you are on the losing side, there are question marks on the decisions taken. We were 40-50 runs short. When we lost wickets in the powerplay, we couldn’t get any momentum. Ayush and Nicky batted well to get us to 166. But even if we would have got 240, they could have chased it as well,” Rahul added.
