Tragedy at Sri Lankan Motorsport Event: Race Car Crashes into Spectators, Killing Seven

A horrific incident occurred at a motorsport event hosted by the Sri Lankan army on Sunday, leaving seven people dead and 21 others injured. The tragedy unfolded when a race car veered off the track and ploughed into a crowd of spectators.

The incident took place at the Fox Hill circuit, which is maintained by the Sri Lankan army. A video circulating on social media shows track marshals waving yellow flags to warn drivers of a car that had overturned on the track. However, the drivers continued to speed past in clouds of dust, until a red car slammed into the crowd. Screams of horror can be heard in the video.

According to police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa, a total of 27 people were rushed to the hospital, but seven succumbed to their injuries. Among the deceased was an eight-year-old girl.

The event was being held for the first time in five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the island’s economic crisis. Shortly before the crash, army chief Vikum Liyanage announced that the gates had been opened to spectators free of charge to promote motorsports. Liyanage claimed that approximately 100,000 spectators were present at the circuit.

The tragedy highlights the dangers of motorsports and the importance of safety measures. Sri Lanka’s roads are among the most dangerous in the world, with an average of eight fatalities reported daily.

Despite LSG’s clinical bowling performance that restricted CSK to 176/6, Hooda’s misjudgment in the 17th over gifted Ravindra Jadeja a six and CSK six extra runs.

After the match, Rhodes presented the Magic Mic award, given to the best fielder in the team after every LSG game, to Hooda. However, Rhodes’ decision was more ironical than anything, as he hilariously claimed that Hooda deliberately dropped the catch to prevent MS Dhoni from facing more deliveries.

“I think it was a smart decision by birthday boy Deepak Hooda to let the ball go for a six, so that meant Dhoni didn’t come out for another five balls,” Rhodes said in a video uploaded by LSG.

The entire dressing room erupted in laughter, and Hooda took the joke sportingly.

Dhoni, who came to bat in the 18th over after Moeen Ali’s dismissal, played an unbeaten cameo of 28 from nine balls, slamming two sixes and three boundaries.

The TV umpire, Michael Gough, checked the legality of the delivery using the Hawk-Eye ball tracking technology. The technology revealed that the ball would have passed the batter at 0.92 meters from the ground if he was upright at the crease. Kohli’s waist height has been measured at 1.04 meters, which means the ball would have passed below his waist had he been on his crease, making it a legal delivery.

Kohli expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, arguing that it should have been a no-ball for height. However, the technology confirmed that the delivery was within the legal limits.

The IPL has implemented this technology to remove the subjectivity in adjudicating no-balls above the waist. The system measures the height of the ball as it passes the batter at the popping crease and compares it to the toe-to-waist height of the batter when in an upright position. If the ball is higher than the batter’s waist, it is declared a no-ball.

In Kohli’s case, the projected trajectory of the ball would have taken it 0.12 meters below his waist had he been upright on his crease. Therefore, the delivery was deemed legal.

The introduction of Hawk-Eye technology for no-ball height determination is a significant step towards improving the accuracy and consistency of umpiring decisions in the IPL. It eliminates the potential for human error and ensures that batters are not unfairly dismissed due to subjective interpretations of the rules.
