The 2024 Paris Olympics are on. And with every passing day, we hear history being created by the athletes. India’s star badminton shuttler Lakshya Sen reached where no Indian had reached before. The World No. 19 reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics where he lost to World No. 2 and 2020 Tokyo Olympics Gold medal winner Viktor Axelsen.

Last week also saw another athlete make history. Novak Djokovic, who has won almost everything there is in the world of Tennis. But alas, one thing was missing from his trophy cabinet- The Olympic gold medal. And boy did he win it in style. The Serbian, who has won a record 24 Grand Slam men’s singles titles defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the finals to land his hands on the coveted gold medal. Thereby winning the Golden Slam.

But he isn’t the only one to do so. Four Tennis players before him have already won the Golden Slam. For the unversed, a Golden Slam is earned when an individual player wins all four Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open) and an Olympic gold medal in singles.

Tennis players who achieved a “Singles Career Golden Slam”

Steffi Graf, a Tennis legend became the first player to win the Career Golden Slam when she won all the Grand Slam titles as well as the Olympic Gold back in 1988. She was just 19 years old when she achieved the incredible feat of winning a Career Golden Slam. She is so far the only tennis player to win all four Grand Slams and the Olympic gold medal in the same season.

In her professional career, Graf won 22 Grand Slam titles in a 16-year professional career, the second-most behind Serena Williams (23) since the start of the Open Era in 1968. Graf was ranked world No. #1 for 377 weeks and won a total of 107 career titles.

Another Tennis legend makes the list. Andre Agassi became the first man to get the title of Career Golden Slam way back in 1999. The American is a decorated Tennis player winning the Grand Slams a huge eight-time and is an Olympic Gold medallist.

But things weren’t always hunky dory for the American. In 1997, the then-world champion witnessed a decline due to injuries and a drug controversy. His career appeared to be all but over, but he stormed back into action and accomplished a feat very few have managed to do – achieving the Career Golden Slam.

The American started his journey of winning the Career Golden Slam by winning the 1992 Wimbledon where he defeated Goran Ivanišević in the finals; thereby winning his first ever major title.

He followed it by winning the 1994 US Open where he defeated Germany’s Michael Stich in the final. The third in the line was the 1995 Australian Open where he did the unthinkable, defeating the defending champion Pete Sampras in the final.

And then came the 1996 Summer Olympics held in the United States. The legendary star playing in his home conditions defeated Spain’s Sergi Bruguera in the final. The win gave Agassi four of the five title components needed to be called a “Career Golden Slam” winner.

And finally, the time came when he won the last of the titles. Andre Agassi defeated Andriy Medvedev in the final, 1–6, 2–6, 6–4, 6–3, 6–4 to win the men’s singles tennis title at the 1999 French Open. With the win, Agassi became the first man and the second human to win the Career Golden Slam title.

  1. Rafael Nadal

Spain’s maverick Rafael Nadal started his journey towards a Career Golden Slam by first capturing the 2005 French Open where he defeated Argentina’s Mariano Puerta in the final, He followed it next by winning two titles in one year. In 2008, the Spaniard defeated Chile’s Fernando González in the final to win the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Doubling the celebrations, he won the 2008 Wimbledon defeating five-time defending champion Roger Federer in the finals.

Nadal continued his title-winning streak; winning the 2009 Australian Open and defeating Roger Federer in the final. And then completed his gauntlet by winning the 2010 US Open defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.

The Spaniard accomplished the feat at the age of 24 years and thereby became the youngest male player in the Open Era to achieve this feat.

Not at all shocking to see this name, right? Serena Williams is America’s most decorated superstar. The second female to win the Career Golden Slam, Williams has won a total of 23 Grand Slams including 7 Wimbledon and 7 Australian Open titles.

Serena completed her career Golden Slam in singles at the age of 30. She had already won all four majors by the time she was 21, capturing her first US Open in 1999, her first Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles in 2002 and her first Australian Open in 2003, but she didn’t finish her collection until the 2012 London Olympics.

Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Cincinnati Open After Olympic Triumph

The Serbian became the latest and oldest entrant in this list when he defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 Paris Olympic gold medal match.

Djokovic began his entry into Career Golden Slam by winning the 2008 Australian Open where he defeated France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. He followed it with a massive year in 2011 where he won the Wimbledon and US Open respectively.

Djokovic had to wait a long time to get his hands on the French Open, the only major title missing from his cabinet. In the 2016 French Open, the Serbian defeated Andy Murray in the final to win the prestigious title.

What is Pickleball?

Imagine a sport that’s easy to learn, fun to play, and promotes great exercise – that’s pickleball! Played on a court similar in size to a badminton court with a net slightly lower than a tennis net, players use solid paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over the net. The game can be played as singles or doubles.

What are the Basic Rules of Pickleball?

Starting the Game

  • The game begins with a coin toss or rally to determine which side serves first.
  • The server must serve from behind the baseline, hitting the ball underhand and diagonally into the opponent’s service court.

Serving Rules

  • Underhand Serve: The ball must be struck below the waist with an underhand motion.
  • Diagonal Serve: The serve must travel diagonally to the opposite service court.
  • One Serve Attempt: Only one serve attempt is allowed, except in the case of a let (the ball touches the net but lands in the correct service court).

Scoring

  • Points: Only the serving team can score points.

But how is this Tennis-like sport becoming so popular in a cricket-mad country? Before we deep dive into the reasons behind the sport’s popularity. Let’s have a brief into the basics of pickleball game.

What is Pickleball? An Overview

Pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity as one of the most favoured racket sports worldwide. It combines the finest elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis into an engaging and enjoyable game suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Played on a court the size of a badminton court with a lower, tennis-style net, players use paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball back and forth. Pickleball can be enjoyed as both singles and doubles, making it an excellent way to exercise with friends and family or meet new people.

Despite its similarities to tennis, pickleball game has some distinct differences. For instance, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed, and volleys cannot be played from within the “kitchen,” a marked area near the net.

Why is it called “Pickleball”?

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, who were looking for a game that their kids could play together. Combining badminton nets, table tennis bats and a wiffle ball, the three men created the first iteration of what would go on to become pickleball.

The first court was later built in 1967 in Pritchard’s backyard before the first tournament took place in 1976 at South Center Athletic Club in Tukwila, Washington.

The name ‘Pickleball’ is said to have come from two potential sources. Joan Pritchard, Joel’s wife, said that she named the game after the “pickle boat” in the crew, which is a boat that is made up of the leftover oarsmen from other boats.

Meanwhile, McCallum said that the name came from Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and run off with it.

So, how do you play pickleball? What are the pickleball rules?

Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles on a badminton-sized court with a lower tennis net. The game has specific rules to ensure fair play and enjoyable competition.

The court is divided into two service boxes and a non-volley zone near the net, known as ‘the kitchen.’

To start a point, the ball is served underhand into the opposite service box, avoiding the kitchen. According to pickleball rules, the ball must bounce once on each side of the court before players or teams can begin volleying.

The rally continues until a player or team makes a mistake, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net, or someone hits a winner, causing the ball to bounce twice.

The kitchen, or non-volley zone, requires players to let the ball bounce before playing a shot within it. Failing to do so results in a point for the opposing player or team.

What are the equipment/ gear needed for pickleball?

This was a shocking move. Ruben Neves, one of the best midfielders in world football currently has announced that he will be playing for Al Hilal this season.

Another Chelsea player bites the dust. Chelsea’s defensive wall N’Golo Kante has decided to part ways with The Blues. The 32-year-old is out of contract this summer and is being reported to have extensive talks with the Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad.

Regarded as one of the finest central midfielders of the modern era, Kante played a significant role in helping Leicester City achieve the impossible in 2015/16, when they won the Premier League title, before replicating that success at Chelsea 12 months later.

Kante also played significant roles in Chelsea’s Europa League and Champions League successes in 2018/19 and 2020/21, while he has appeared in nine other cup finals for the club.

Transgender Athletes in Women’s sports: Are we balancing fairness with inclusivity?

On 24th March 2023, World Athletics banned Transgenders from playing sports under the women category. The debate has been going around about whether to let trans women play under the women category as biologically born males would obviously have an advantage. 

The approach is to let the Transgender community have a separate category but banning them is not the ultimate solution as they have the talent that they possess. In these evolving times of inclusivity, this is a topic to be spoken about. The broader perspective is to include them and create a space where there will be equal competition and fair judgement. It’s not about pronouns, it’s about hormones. 

Renee Richards formerly known as Richard Raskind was a well-known Tennis player who after transitioning in 1975 went further to play in the women’s category. From 1975-1977 she faced and sued court cases as she was questioned to play as a woman and also because she refused to take the Barr body test. Finally, in 1977, Judge Alfred M. Ascione found in Richards’s favour. He ruled: “This person is now a female” and that requiring Richards to pass the Barr body test was “grossly unfair, discriminatory and inequitable, and a violation of her rights. She continued playing professionally from 1977-1981 in the women’s category till she retired.

A policy recited by WA also ruled that to compete as a woman, athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD), who have congenital conditions that cause atypical sex development, must have a testosterone level below 2.5 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) for at least 24 months before an international competition.

Concerns and Opposition

Physical Advantages and Competitive Fairness: Critics of transgender women’s participation in women’s sports raise concerns about potential physical advantages resulting from biological differences, such as bone density, muscle mass, and lung capacity. They argue that these inherent physiological attributes may create an unfair advantage for trans women athletes, compromising the integrity of the competition.

Safety and Injury Risks: Opponents argue that the physical differences between cisgender women and transwomen athletes could pose safety risks, particularly in contact sports. Concerns are raised about the potential for increased injury rates among cisgender female athletes due to perceived strength or size discrepancies.

Maintaining Separate Categories: Some argue for the creation of separate categories or divisions in sports, where transgender women can compete among themselves. This approach aims to ensure fair competition while recognizing the unique experiences and challenges faced by transgender athletes.

In July 2022, on “ The Daily Show ” hosted by Trevor Noah was seen interviewing Veronica Ivy who is a track cycling world champion and Transgender activist. In the interview, she stated her perspective on Transgender women playing women’s sports.

When asked about women raising concerns about being transitioned women has their advantages and it’s unfair to compete against biologically born females she responded.

“This idea that trans women are suddenly gonna take over women’s sport is an irrational fear of trans women, which is the dictionary definition of transphobia.”

The host continued with asking about “ What if” a cisgender woman asks you that my entire existence has been being a woman and I feel that transitioning from male to female has an advantage. So if you wait till the sports world finds a middle ground where the competition is equal to compete with me. To which Veronica Ivy responded.

“Because that’s not how human rights work. So the way human rights work is that the default is inclusion, and the burden of proof is on the people seeking to exclude, not the people seeking to include.”

Caitlyn Jenner is an Olympic Gold winner in the decathlon (1974) and also a media personality. Caitlyn is a biologically born boy and was identified as William Bruce Jenner previously, In April 2015 she came out as a trans woman and went through the transition.

After Lia Thomas became the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming title by beating her competitor Emma Weyant by 38 seconds. Netizens speculated the win to be “unfair”.

In April 2022, Caitlyn Jenner in an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored commented about the latter news when Piers asked 

 “I stand with it that I don’t want biological boys to compete against women and girls in sports it’s just not fair now obviously. Lia Thomas at the University of Pennsylvania had been on the boys team just a few years earlier. I do not blame her she played within the rules but she dominated she had gone through male puberty her lungs are bigger, her back is  bigger, and her hands are bigger, and she just has a tremendous advantage in swimming in the pool against the women and she proved that so I don’t have a problem with her.”

‘ I have a problem with the NCAA  that we have to change the rules, we have to do a better job because the bottom line is we have to keep it fair. 

I don’t want to ruin women’s sports or discourage women from getting into sports because they think they’re going to have to compete against a bunch of guys. I totally agree it’s not fair.’

The debate hasn’t ended yet, people are demanding to create a separate category for transgenders so that they can participate with integrity. To conclude the debate there are many views on this topic but most commonly are two. First is acceptance that, Men who went through male puberty and later transitioned into women have an unfair biological advantage and must be excluded from the former category. The second is to create an inclusive category where the transitioned individuals can pick their choice of competition.

Kyle Philip, United States of America’s pace express has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect. The match officials found his bowling action illegal after USA’s World Cup Qualifier game against West Indies was completed.

Having reviewed footage of Phillip’s action, the event panel concluded it was illegal, and suspended him in accordance with Article 6.7 of the ICC’s regulations for the review of suspect bowling actions. Phillip’s suspension will remain in place until he submits to a reassessment of his action and gets it cleared.
