Ashwin Equals Muralitharan's 'Player of the Series' Record, Despite Administrative Oversight

Ashwin Equals Muralitharan’s ‘Player of the Series’ Record, Despite Administrative Oversight

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s prolific spinner, has etched his name in the annals of Test cricket history by equaling the record for most ‘Player of the Series’ awards. His stellar performance in the recently concluded Test series against Bangladesh earned him his 11th such accolade, drawing him level with Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan.

However, a recent revelation by the Indian Express has shed light on an administrative oversight that could have seen Ashwin break the record even earlier. During India’s tour of the West Indies in 2023, Ashwin’s exceptional performance with both bat and ball went unrecognized when the ‘Player of the Series’ award was inexplicably omitted.

India emerged victorious in the two-match Test series, with Ashwin emerging as the standout performer. His tally of 15 wickets placed him among the frontrunners for the award. However, at the conclusion of the second Test, the award was conspicuously absent.

Had Ashwin received the award in the West Indies, he would have equaled Muralitharan’s record at that time. The subsequent award against Bangladesh would have then seen him claim the world record.

The Indian Express reached out to Cricket West Indies (CWI) for an explanation, but the organization claimed that the award was the responsibility of an Indian agency. However, the agency in question stated that they were only responsible for the commercial aspects of the series, while the ‘Man of the Series’ award fell under CWI’s purview.

Despite the administrative error, Ashwin remains on the cusp of history. He will have the opportunity to claim the world record when India takes on New Zealand in a three-match Test series starting October 16. The Indian team will also travel to Australia later in the year for a five-match Test series, and Ashwin’s current form suggests that he will be a key member of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad.

India's Dominance in Test Cricket Continues with Victory over Bangladesh

India’s Dominance in Test Cricket Continues with Victory over Bangladesh

India’s dominance in Test cricket under Rohit Sharma’s leadership has once again been showcased in their emphatic 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh. Despite rain washing out two days of the Kanpur Test, the Indian team displayed their resilience and unwavering determination to secure a comprehensive victory.

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has hailed India’s dominance, particularly their ability to maintain their position at the top of the Test rankings. He attributes this success to the team’s exceptional skills and their ability to win matches overseas.

Raja singled out Ravichandran Ashwin for special praise, recognizing his all-round abilities. Ashwin’s century in the first Test and his six wickets in Bangladesh’s second innings were crucial in India’s victory. Raja believes that Ashwin is an underrated all-rounder whose contributions often go unnoticed.

Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja’s ability to perform under pressure was also highlighted by Raja. He noted that both Ashwin and Jadeja have shown a remarkable ability to improve their game over time, unlike many Pakistani players who tend to plateau after reaching their peak.

Raja attributed India’s continued success to the intense competition within the team. He believes that the presence of talented players on the bench keeps the established players motivated and prevents them from becoming complacent.

In contrast, Raja expressed concern about the performance of Pakistani players, who often experience a decline in their performance after reaching their peak. He believes that Indian players have a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities within the team, which contributes to their longevity and success.

IPL Governing Body's Decision to Allow Dhoni as 'Uncapped' Player Endorsed by Dinesh Karthik

IPL Governing Body’s Decision to Allow Dhoni as ‘Uncapped’ Player Endorsed by Dinesh Karthik

MS Dhoni’s ‘Uncapped’ Status: Dinesh Karthik Endorses IPL’s Decision

Former Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has expressed his unwavering support for the IPL governing body’s decision to allow MS Dhoni to play as an ‘uncapped’ cricketer in the upcoming season. This move, enabled by new retention rules, allows players who have not represented India in the past five years to be retained at a significantly lower price.

Karthik believes that this rule was specifically crafted for Dhoni, who has been an integral part of the IPL’s success. “Everybody talks about it. This rule is made for one man and I am for it through and through,” he told Cricbuzz. “This man has been such a major part of what this IPL has been about.”

Karthik emphasized Dhoni’s impact on the league’s popularity and financial success. “You can ask any TV broadcaster and you will get the answer that when this man steps on the field, the ratings go up. This is a fact. If you are going to do something that is going to help the league, why not?”

The new retention rules define an ‘uncapped’ Indian player as one who has not played in the starting XI of an international match (Test, ODI, or T20I) or does not have a Central Contract with the BCCI in the past five years. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, last played for India in July 2019.

Karthik believes that the rule is fair and beneficial to all teams. “If everybody is in a happy place – be it BCCI, be it any of the teams, be it how the league has performed over the years and how it has kept players so happy over the last 15-18 years, this man has played a major role,” he said.

The IPL’s decision to allow Dhoni to play as an ‘uncapped’ cricketer has sparked mixed reactions. Some critics argue that it undermines the spirit of the retention rules, while others view it as a necessary exception for a player of Dhoni’s stature.

Regardless of the differing opinions, it is clear that Dhoni remains a highly valued asset for the Chennai Super Kings and the IPL as a whole. His presence on the field is sure to generate excitement and boost viewership, further solidifying the league’s position as one of the most popular sporting events in the world.

ICC Deploys Social Media Moderation Tool to Protect Players at Women's T20 World Cup

ICC Deploys Social Media Moderation Tool to Protect Players at Women’s T20 World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a proactive step to combat online toxicity and foster a more inclusive environment for players and fans at the Women’s T20 World Cup. The tournament, which kicks off in Sharjah on October 3, 2024, will feature a cutting-edge social media moderation tool developed in collaboration with GoBubble.

This AI-powered tool monitors official and player social media channels for toxic content, including hate speech and harassment. By proactively identifying and addressing such content, the ICC aims to protect the mental health of players and create a positive atmosphere for all involved.

Over 60 players have already opted in for the social media protection service, recognizing the importance of safeguarding their online presence. South Africa’s Sinalo Jafta expressed her gratitude for the initiative, stating that it provides a much-needed shield against the often-degrading comments that players face on social media.

“That protection for me is very big because players get to share their life with the world without the fear of being judged or criticized,” Jafta said.

ICC head of digital, Finn Bradshaw, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all participants and fans. “It’s been great to see so many of the players and teams embrace our new initiative,” Bradshaw said.

The social media moderation tool is part of a broader effort by the ICC to promote gender equality and inclusivity in cricket. The Women’s T20 World Cup is a significant platform for showcasing the talent and skills of female cricketers, and the ICC is determined to ensure that the tournament is a safe and welcoming space for all.

Martin Guptill’s Six-Hitting Prowess Shatters Commentary Box Window in Legends League Cricket

Former New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill, known for his exceptional six-hitting ability, continues to showcase his skills even after retiring from international cricket. In a recent Legends League Cricket match, the 38-year-old demonstrated his impeccable timing by hitting a shot that soared straight into the commentary box, shattering the window in the process.

During the 11th match of the Legends League Cricket 2024, Harbhajan Singh’s Manipal Tigers won the toss and opted to field first against the Southern Super Stars at Surat’s Lalbhai Contractor Stadium. The Super Stars amassed an impressive total of 194 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Guptill’s explosive innings of 68 runs off just 29 deliveries was the highlight of the Super Stars’ batting performance. His knock included 8 boundaries and 4 towering sixes. One of Guptill’s sixes, hit off Dan Christian’s bowling in the 9th over, was particularly noteworthy. The ball sailed into the commentary box, shattering the glass window of the facility.

The sheer power and timing of the shot left everyone in awe, including Manipal Tigers’ skipper Harbhajan Singh, who couldn’t take his eyes off the ball as it disappeared into the distance.

In response to the formidable target set by the Southern Super Stars, Manipal Tigers were bundled out for 152, falling short by 42 runs. The Super Stars emerged victorious, thanks in large part to Guptill’s blistering knock.

Guptill’s six-hitting prowess has been a hallmark of his career. He holds the record for the most sixes in One Day Internationals (ODIs), with 172 to his name. He is also the only player to have scored two double centuries in ODIs.

Despite retiring from international cricket in 2023, Guptill continues to play in various T20 leagues around the world. His recent performance in the Legends League Cricket is a testament to his enduring skills and his ability to entertain fans with his explosive batting.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: India's Rising Star in Test Cricket

Yashasvi Jaiswal: India’s Rising Star in Test Cricket

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the 22-year-old Indian opener, has emerged as a formidable force in Test cricket, amassing 1,217 runs in just 11 matches at an impressive average of 64.05. His twin fifties in the second Test against Bangladesh solidified his status as one of the most dangerous batsmen in the format.

Former India pacer and selector Salil Ankola, who played a key role in Jaiswal’s selection for the Mumbai Ranji team, recalls that the young left-hander’s initial struggles in red-ball cricket raised doubts about his suitability for the format. However, Ankola’s instincts told him otherwise.

“He has the attitude, flair, and guts-that street-smartness you want in a cricketer,” Ankola said. “I felt Jaiswal had that. His selection was against all odds, but I trusted my instincts.”

Jaiswal’s performances in the 2022 Ranji Trophy, where he scored 498 runs in three matches with three centuries, vindicated Ankola’s faith. Ankola first recognized Jaiswal’s potential during an Under-19 World Cup match against Pakistan in 2020, where the young batsman scored an unbeaten 105.

“I knew this guy was special, and he proved it,” Ankola said. “He’s got great timing and power-a rare combination. His ‘flow’ is tremendous, as is his bat speed and swing. That’s what struck me about him.”

Ankola believes Jaiswal’s adaptability, mental strength, and determination make him an all-format player. “He adapts to any surface and conditions quickly,” Ankola said. “He’s mentally strong and super fit. He handles pressure well. If he must take 300 balls to make a century, he’ll do that, and if he needs to score a hundred in 50 balls, he’ll do that too.”

With his exceptional talent and unwavering determination, Yashasvi Jaiswal is poised to become a cornerstone of the Indian Test team for years to come.

Shardul Thakur Battles Fever to Shine for Mumbai in Irani Trophy

Shardul Thakur Battles Fever to Shine for Mumbai in Irani Trophy

Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur’s determination and resilience were tested to the limit during the Irani Trophy match against Rest of India in Lucknow. Despite battling a high fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit, Thakur played through the pain and contributed a valuable 36 runs in a crucial ninth-wicket partnership with Sarfaraz Khan.

Thakur’s fever had been bothering him since the first day of the match, but it worsened after spending nearly two hours in the middle. He took two breaks to receive medical attention, but refused to leave the field. The Mumbai team management eventually took him to a local hospital, where he was kept under observation.

Despite his physical discomfort, Thakur faced 59 balls and hit four fours and a six. His innings was a testament to his fighting spirit and determination to contribute to his team’s cause. This was his first domestic match after recovering from a foot surgery, which he had undergone in London in June.

Thakur’s injury had re-emerged during India’s tour of South Africa, and he is eager to prove his fitness and value ahead of India’s upcoming tour of Australia. With a five-match series against the Aussies on the horizon, Thakur knows that strong performances in the domestic season will be crucial to his chances of selection.

The Mumbai team management is awaiting the results of Thakur’s blood tests for malaria and dengue. Until then, he will remain in the hospital under observation. His availability for the rest of the Irani Trophy match remains uncertain.

Rohit Sharma's Leadership: A Subtle Shift in Indian Cricket

Rohit Sharma’s Leadership: A Subtle Shift in Indian Cricket

Virat Kohli’s tenure as Test captain marked a shift in Indian cricket, with “intent” becoming the driving force. The team’s potent pace attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, and Mohammed Shami, became a formidable weapon.

When Rohit Sharma took over the reins, he brought a subtle but significant change. “For me, aggression is all about your actions, not the reactions,” he emphasized. Rohit’s approach is characterized by a relentless pursuit of victory, coupled with a clear communication of his gameplan to his teammates.

Rohit’s leadership style was evident in India’s recent Test victory over Bangladesh in Kanpur. The team’s ability to push the game forward at all times, even against the clock, showcased his influence. His informal and colloquial language creates a sense of camaraderie on the field, fostering a “big brother” vibe.

Despite his reputation as the “Hitman” of Indian cricket, Rohit is far from being a larger-than-life superstar. His leadership extends beyond his own performances. In the absence of key players during the Gabba heist in 2021 and the five-Test series against England earlier this year, Rohit handed Test caps to four players who responded with exceptional performances.

Rohit’s ability to inspire his team is crucial to India’s recent dominance in limited-overs cricket. His belief in uninhibited cricket has been a cornerstone of their success in the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup.

Rohit’s leadership style is characterized by a calm and calculated approach. “When you are playing at such a high level, you have to be calm to think wisely,” he stated. “I use my experience and knowledge to trust myself.”

As Rohit approaches the twilight of his career, he remains focused on leading India to further glory. His unwavering determination and ability to inspire his teammates will undoubtedly guide them towards another exciting dash to the finish line.

Ashwin Equals Player of the Series Record, Praises Jadeja's All-Round Brilliance

Ashwin Equals Player of the Series Record, Praises Jadeja’s All-Round Brilliance

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s veteran off-spinner, has etched his name in cricket history by equaling the record for Player of the Series awards after India’s 2-0 Test series victory over Bangladesh. Ashwin’s remarkable partnership with fellow-spinner Ravindra Jadeja has been instrumental in India’s success, particularly on home soil.

Together, Ashwin and Jadeja have amassed an astonishing 830 Test wickets, with Ashwin claiming the lion’s share of 527. Despite the occasional selection dilemma when only one of them is chosen for the playing XI, Ashwin has emphasized that it no longer affects him.

However, Ashwin admitted that he used to harbor resentment towards Jadeja when the latter was preferred over him. “It used to bother me at one point of time,” Ashwin confessed. “But, it doesn’t anymore because the larger goal is at the forefront of my mind.”

Ashwin went on to praise Jadeja’s exceptional all-round abilities, highlighting his status as the second left-arm spinner with 300 Test wickets and over 3000 runs. “If he’s the one that has to play, he’s the one that has to play and I have complete faith in him,” Ashwin stated.

Earlier this week, Jadeja became the third Indian cricketer to achieve the rare feat of 3,000 Test runs and 300 Test wickets, joining Ashwin and Kapil Dev in an elite club.

Meanwhile, Ashwin has made history by becoming the first bowler to take at least 50 wickets in all three editions of the World Test Championship (WTC). He achieved this milestone during the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, dismissing Shakib Al Hasan for 9.

Ashwin, currently ranked as the world’s top Test bowler, has taken 50 wickets in just 10 WTC matches, making him the second-highest wicket-taker in WTC history behind Australia’s Nathan Lyon.
