Derbyshire’s long-awaited victory at their County Ground headquarters finally arrived as they comprehensively defeated Glamorgan by 10 wickets in the Vitality County Championship Division Two match at Derby.

After bowling Glamorgan out for 287 on the fourth morning, Derbyshire needed just 27 runs to secure their first Championship win at Derby in five years. Luis Reece and Harry Came took less than seven overs to complete the task, giving Derbyshire their first Championship victory anywhere since July 2022.

Glamorgan had made Derbyshire wait, with Mason Crane and Dan Douthwaite adding 47 from 136 balls for the eighth wicket. However, former Glamorgan captain David Lloyd broke the stand, and with rain looming, Derbyshire knew they needed to take the last three wickets quickly.

Crane and Douthwaite frustrated Derbyshire initially, but Lloyd’s offspin proved decisive. Crane was trapped lbw for 28, and Douthwaite was bowled for 25, leaving Derbyshire on the brink of victory.

Reece then sealed the win with two consecutive fours off Sam Northeast, giving Derbyshire their first Championship win at Derby since August 2019.

Derbyshire’s victory was built on a strong bowling performance, with Zak Chappell taking 6-47 in Glamorgan’s first innings. Luis Reece also impressed with 3-43, while Jack Morley claimed 3-46 in the second innings.

For Glamorgan, Nick van der Gugten top-scored with 46* in the first innings, while Kiran Carlson and Colin Ingram made half-centuries in the second innings. However, their efforts were not enough to prevent Derbyshire from securing a much-needed victory.

Jonny Bairstow, who had scored a half-century in the first innings, was dismissed for a two-ball duck, but Yorkshire captain Jonny Tattersall hit the winning runs to seal a 21-point haul.

The victory propelled Yorkshire to second place in the Division Two standings, just nine points behind Sussex with four rounds remaining. It marked their third consecutive Championship victory, a feat they last achieved in 2021.

Sussex, who had only lost once in 10 matches this season, suffered a setback in their pursuit of the title. They will look to bounce back when they host Derbyshire at Hove, while Yorkshire faces a crucial clash against Middlesex at Headingley.

It would also reduce the financial burden on less-wealthy boards, which often incur losses when hosting Test matches.

The fund is expected to be in the region of US $15 million and has the backing of BCCI secretary Jay Shah and ECB chair Richard Thompson. It is currently in its formative stages and has not yet been formally discussed by the ICC board or executive committee.

Baird expressed optimism about the fund’s potential, stating, “We need to take away the barriers and encourage Test cricket to be the best of the best. To retain that history and that legacy, which goes alongside the newer forms of white-ball cricket.”

The ECB has already implemented a similar concept, agreeing to pay Zimbabwe a “touring fee” for their upcoming Test match at Trent Bridge. This move reflects the growing recognition that boards need to find ways to make Test cricket financially viable for all nations.

The ICC’s proposed fund would be a significant step towards ensuring that Test cricket remains a vibrant and competitive format. It would provide a financial incentive for players to prioritize Test cricket and help to level the playing field for boards outside the “Big Three.”

Left-arm spinner Sadia’s selection is subject to fitness, while uncapped left-arm seamer Tasmia Rubab has also been included in the squad.

Pakistan has also named Alvi, who was omitted from the main squad, as the traveling reserve. Rameen Shamim and Umm-e-Hani are the non-traveling reserves.

The Women’s T20 World Cup will commence in the UAE on October 3. Pakistan has been placed in Group A alongside Australia, India, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. The revised schedule for the tournament has yet to be announced after it was shifted from Bangladesh last week.

Bangladesh’s previous Test best against Pakistan was the 555-6 they made at Khulna in 2015.

Pakistan will need to bat aggressively in the second innings to chase down the target and avoid defeat. The match is evenly poised, and either team could emerge victorious.
