The panel discussion will take place on the evening of July 28 at India House, located at Parc de Lavillette. India House, the country’s first-ever dedicated space at the Olympics, is a collaborative effort between Reliance Foundation and the Indian Olympic Association.

Joining Dravid on the panel will be Geoff Allardice, CEO of the International Cricket Council, and Harsh Jain, CEO & Co-founder of Dream Sports.

Dravid, who recently led India to victory in the T20 World Cup as their coach, is widely regarded as one of the most respected and admired figures in the cricketing world.

Geoff Allardice said, as per a release by Dream Sports, “We continue to focus on the development of cricket across the world, bringing in more fans to the game, opportunities for players to compete at the highest level and now taking cricket to the Olympic stakeholders. The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics marks an important step and we look forward to Paris 2024, as an added impetus to the journey.”

Speaking about the event, Harsh Jain said, “We are very excited to have the world’s second-largest spectator sport finally included in the next Olympics. This is sure to take the Olympics’ global viewership to an all-time high and encourage more countries to develop cricket programs, promoting the sport’s growth and diversity.”

The upcoming moderated panel discussion will feature distinguished panellists who will share their insights on various aspects of cricket’s inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics programme. The panellists will explore the potential for cricket’s growth and the opportunities it presents in both established and emerging markets.

Additionally, the discussion will focus on strategies to capitalize on the global enthusiasm of cricket fans. Cricket will be making its long-awaited return to the Olympics at the Los Angeles edition in 2028. Notably, the sport has only been featured in the Olympics once before, back in 1900.

“We’ve got to keep asking the right questions of the ICC, and of each of the different boards of the countries, and make sure that we’re still striving to get, first and foremost, more girls in the game, but making sure there’s equal opportunities across the board for each country and the females as well,” Mooney said.

Mooney also discusses the growing competitiveness of women’s cricket globally. She believes that the gap between teams is narrowing, as evidenced by England’s recent success in the Women’s Ashes. However, she does not anticipate the same level of secrecy and reluctance to face teammates in the nets as seen in the men’s game.

“We play so much franchise cricket now, and a lot of us are really good mates. And there really aren’t any secrets in the global cricket game anymore, because there’s so much vision on everyone,” Mooney said.

As she returns to the Hundred, Mooney is aware of the high expectations surrounding her. She is determined to score runs and help Manchester Originals win games, but she also recognizes the fickle nature of cricket.

“I certainly don’t look at it as anything more or less than that. Like any tournament I play in, whether it’s for Australia or back home in the Big Bash, I’ve got a job to do, and that’s that doesn’t change, no matter what colour shirt I put on,” Mooney said.

Former Indian opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth has expressed his displeasure over the reasons given by India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar for not appointing Hardik Pandya as the T20I captain. Srikkanth, however, believes that fitness should not have been a factor in the decision-making process. He pointed out that Pandya played the entire IPL season and bowled regularly, despite Mumbai Indians’ failure to qualify for the playoffs. He also highlighted Pandya’s performance as vice-captain during India’s T20 World Cup triumph last month.

“Fitness is something that I will not agree with,” Srikkanth said. “He played the entire IPL. He also bowled. Yes, he might not have done well (in the IPL). That’s another issue. Mumbai Indians didn’t qualify. At the World Cup, he was the vice-captain and he played well.”

Srikkanth also criticized the selectors for not being transparent about their decision. He believes they should have clearly stated that they were dropping Pandya as captain and moving forward with Suryakumar Yadav as a long-term option.

“The reasons that they are giving they could have said it in a straightforward manner ‘we are dropping Hardik Pandya as captain, we want to move forward. We are looking at Suryakumar as a long term’. Make it clear. Say it without fear,” he added.

Agarkar, on the other hand, maintained that fitness was a major concern for the selectors. He explained that they wanted someone who was likely to be available more consistently.

“Fitness has been something that he’s struggled with,” Agarkar said. “As selectors, it becomes difficult then. The thought behind it was that we want someone who is likely to be available more.”

Agarkar also praised Suryakumar’s fitness level and positive feedback from the team management as key factors in his selection as captain.

“Why Surya was made captain? Because he is one of the deserving candidates. The one we know has been around the dressing room over the last one year, you get feedback from the dressing room a lot. He has got a good cricketing brain and he is still one of the best T20 batters in the world,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has been ruled out of the upcoming home series against India due to an injury. The news was confirmed by Sri Lanka’s chief selector Upul Tharanga, who stated that Chameera will miss both the T20Is and ODIs.

Chameera’s absence is a significant blow to Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, as he is one of their most experienced and reliable bowlers. It is unclear when or how Chameera sustained the injury, but he was not picked in the Kandy Falcons side towards the end of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) earlier this month.

Tharanga said that a replacement for Chameera will be named shortly, with Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka, or Kasun Rajitha likely to be in contention.

In other team news, Angelo Mathews has been left out of the T20I squad despite his impressive performances in the LPL. Tharanga confirmed that Mathews is no longer being considered for the next T20 World Cup in 2026.

“We need to look to the future,” Tharanga said. “There’s a big gap to fill when it comes to an allrounder in the side – we have about two-three new players in mind to slot into that role.”

Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Perera, who both had excellent performances in the LPL, are also not guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Tharanga confirmed that Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis are the first-choice openers, with Kamindu Mendis likely to slot in at no.4.

Captain Charith Asalanka will remain at no. 5, which leaves one spot – at no.3 – for either Chandimal or Perera.

With the T20Is being played in Pallekele, a venue that has offered more pace and bounce than anywhere else in the country, Tharanga said Sri Lanka could play three fast bowlers. Nuwan Thushara, Binura Fernando, and Matheesha Pathirana could be the first-choice combination, with Dasun Shanaka as another seam option at no. 6.

On the spin front, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana will play, with Dunith Wellalage an option if Sri Lanka want an extra spinner.

Sanath Jayasuriya, who has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s interim head coach, said he will try his best to help the team succeed.

“I don’t have experience as a head coach, but I will try and do my best with this challenge,” Jayasuriya said. “That said, I’m only in the role on an interim basis, so we will have a permanent coach coming in soon.”

Sri Lanka have been preparing for the India series by playing in the LPL and having a training camp in Kandy. They have also been working with Rajasthan Royals high-performance director, Zubin Bharucha, on a short-term basis.
