Sri Lanka’s Athapaththu Century Powers Team to T20 World Cup Qualifier Triumph

Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu led her team to a resounding 68-run victory over Scotland in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Abu Dhabi, securing their place in Group A of the World Cup proper.

Athapaththu’s blistering 102 off 63 balls, studded with 13 fours and four sixes, propelled Sri Lanka to a formidable total of 169 for 5. She shared a crucial 106-run partnership with Nilakshika Silva (26*).

Scotland’s chase faltered early as they lost opener Saskia Horley to a run-out in the third over. Left-arm medium pacer Udeshika Prabodhani then struck twice in the fourth over, dismissing Sarah Bryce and Katherine Fraser to leave Scotland reeling at 13 for 3.

Sri Lanka’s spinners tightened the screws, with Priyanaz Chatterji (30) offering the only resistance. However, the Scottish batters struggled to keep up with the required run rate, eventually falling 68 runs short.

Prabodhani finished with impressive figures of 3 for 13, while fellow spinner Inoka Ranaweera claimed 1 for 13.

The victory marks a significant achievement for Sri Lanka, who will now face the likes of Australia, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan in Group A of the World Cup. Scotland, on the other hand, will be part of Group B alongside South Africa, England, West Indies, and Bangladesh.

Both Sri Lanka and Scotland had already secured their spots in the T20 World Cup proper after defeating UAE and Ireland, respectively, in the semifinals.

Kuldeep Yadav's Masterclass Leads Delhi Capitals to Victory Over Rajasthan Royals

Kuldeep Yadav’s Masterclass Leads Delhi Capitals to Victory Over Rajasthan Royals

Kuldeep Yadav’s exceptional bowling performance propelled Delhi Capitals (DC) to a thrilling victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a high-scoring encounter in Delhi. Yadav’s spell of 2 for 25 proved decisive, earning him the Player-of-the-Match award and lifting DC to fifth place in the points table.

Chasing a challenging target of 222, RR appeared in contention at the start of the 18th over, requiring 41 runs from 18 deliveries. However, Yadav’s brilliance turned the tide in DC’s favor. He successfully reviewed a not-out lbw decision against Donovan Ferreira off the first ball of the over and then dismissed R Ashwin with his final delivery.

Yadav’s economical bowling in his first three overs, conceding only 21 runs, had already disrupted RR’s momentum. DC captain Rishabh Pant revealed that the plan was to save Yadav’s over for RR’s right-handers, Ferreira and Rovman Powell, at the death.

“We wanted to take that chance because with Kuldeep, we knew that these players are going to have problems,” Pant said. “And as always, Kuldeep delivered – great to see that!”

After Yadav’s heroics, DC’s fast bowlers executed their yorkers with precision in the final overs. Rasikh Salam bowled four yorkers in the 19th over, three of them dot balls to Powell, while Mukesh Kumar delivered two in the final over.

“Especially in the back end, the way fast bowlers executed the yorkers [was the turning point],” Pant said. “I think that was a positive, because the way our fast bowling has been going and the way the tournament is progressing, each and every day the bowlers are coming on the positive side, and that’s good to see.”

Despite Delhi being a challenging venue for bowlers this season, Yadav emphasized the importance of mixing length and line and reading the batter. “There is a lot of chance to pick wickets, and that’s what I did,” he said. “You have to be smart enough to bowl and read the batter. It’s better to back your strengths, and just keep believing.”

DC’s victory propelled them to fifth place in the points table, level on points with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Delhi Capitals Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Win over Rajasthan Royals

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoff race intensified as Rajasthan Royals suffered a setback in their pursuit of a top-four finish. The Royals fell to a 20-run defeat against Delhi Capitals, leaving their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, made significant progress in their own playoff aspirations. The win propelled them to fifth place in the standings, level on points with Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Chennai Super Kings.

The match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was a tale of two halves. Delhi Capitals posted a formidable 221/8, thanks to half-centuries from Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel, and a blistering 20-ball 41 from Tristan Stubbs.

In response, Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start, with captain Sanju Samson leading the charge with a brilliant 86. However, the Royals lost wickets at crucial junctures, and despite a valiant effort from Shubham Dubey, they fell short of the target.

Kuldeep Yadav and Mukesh Kumar were the stars for Delhi Capitals with the ball. Kuldeep claimed 2-25, while Mukesh took 2-30 to restrict the Royals to 201/8.

The win was a major boost for Delhi Capitals, who are now firmly in contention for a playoff spot. Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, will need to regroup and find their winning ways if they want to secure a top-four finish.

Delhi Capitals Triumph Over Rajasthan Royals in High-Scoring IPL Clash

Delhi Capitals (DC) emerged victorious over Rajasthan Royals (RR) by a margin of 20 runs in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Despite a valiant 86-run knock from Sanju Samson, RR fell short of DC’s formidable total of 221 for 8.

DC’s batting innings was spearheaded by Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel, who both notched up rapid half-centuries. Fraser-McGurk, known for his explosive batting at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, dominated the new ball with a flurry of boundaries, reaching his fifty off just 19 deliveries. Porel, not to be outdone, maintained the momentum with a 28-ball half-century, keeping the boundaries flowing.

RR’s bowling attack, led by R Ashwin, managed to slow down DC’s progress. Ashwin claimed three wickets, including the crucial dismissal of Fraser-McGurk. However, Tristan Stubbs provided a late surge for DC, ensuring they posted a challenging total.

In response, RR’s chase got off to a promising start with Samson leading the charge. The wicketkeeper-batter played a blistering knock, hitting 10 fours and 3 sixes in his 46-ball innings. However, the DC bowlers, particularly Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed, kept the pressure on RR.

Kuldeep and Mukesh shared four wickets between them, while Ahmed chipped in with two. RR’s middle order failed to provide substantial support to Samson, and they eventually fell 20 runs short of the target.

DC’s victory was a testament to their balanced performance, with both their batting and bowling units contributing to the success. RR, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their second consecutive defeat and will need to regroup quickly to stay in contention for the playoffs.

Sanju Samson's Controversial Dismissal Rocks Delhi Capitals vs Rajasthan Royals Clash

Sanju Samson’s Controversial Dismissal Sparks Outrage in Delhi Capitals vs Rajasthan Royals Clash

The Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday witnessed a dramatic turn of events when Sanju Samson was controversially adjudged out at a crucial juncture. The decision, which ultimately cost RR the match, has sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about umpiring standards in the tournament.

The incident occurred in the 16th over of RR’s chase when Samson smashed a Mukesh Kumar delivery to long-on. DC’s Shai Hope claimed the catch at the boundary, but replays indicated that his foot may have touched the boundary cushion. Despite this, the third umpire ruled the catch clean, leaving Samson bewildered and frustrated.

Samson, who was batting superbly on 86, protested the decision vehemently before eventually walking off the field in disappointment. The Royals’ dugout was left stunned, while DC co-owner Parth Jindal was seen celebrating animatedly in the stands.

Samson’s dismissal proved to be a turning point in the match, as RR lost momentum and eventually fell short of the target. The decision has drawn widespread criticism from fans, pundits, and former players alike, who have questioned the accuracy of the third umpire’s call.

Throughout the IPL season, there have been numerous instances of questionable umpiring decisions, including incorrect wide calls, waist-high full-tosses being ruled as legal, and controversial run-outs. These incidents have raised concerns about the quality of umpiring in the tournament and have led to calls for improved standards.

The Sanju Samson dismissal has once again highlighted the need for greater accuracy and consistency in umpiring. The IPL is one of the most prestigious cricket tournaments in the world, and it is essential that the umpires are held to the highest standards to ensure fair play and the integrity of the game.

Mohammad Amir's Ireland Visa Delay Puts T20I Series Participation in Doubt

Mohammad Amir’s Ireland Visa Delay Puts T20I Series Participation in Doubt

Mohammad Amir’s absence from Pakistan’s tour of Ireland has raised concerns about his participation in the upcoming T20I series. The left-arm pacer, who holds permanent residency in the United Kingdom, applied for an Ireland visa alongside his teammates. However, while the rest of the squad received their visas before departing for Dublin on Tuesday, Amir’s application remained pending.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been in contact with Cricket Ireland regarding the issue, emphasizing that it is the host board’s responsibility to facilitate and provide visas for the visiting team in a timely manner. Given the short duration of the tour, with Pakistan scheduled to play three T20Is from May 10 to 14, Amir’s involvement in the series is now in jeopardy.

As of now, there is no information on when Amir’s visa is expected to be approved. Mohammad Yousaf, a member of Pakistan’s management team, also experienced a delay in his visa approval but managed to receive it just in time to join the squad. It is unclear whether Amir’s visa delay is related to the timing of his application, although the PCB maintains that he applied simultaneously with the rest of the team.

Amir has previously visited Ireland as part of Pakistan’s squad for the country’s inaugural Test match in Malahide in 2018. After retiring from international cricket in 2020, he reversed his decision earlier this year and made his return in the recently concluded home series against New Zealand.

The Pakistan squad is expected to arrive in Dublin on Wednesday morning, with all three T20Is scheduled to be played at the same venue. Following the Ireland tour, Pakistan will travel to the UK for four T20Is ahead of the World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

Josh Little to Miss Ireland's T20I Series for IPL Commitment

Josh Little to Miss Ireland’s T20I Series for IPL Commitment

Josh Little, Ireland’s star fast bowler, will remain with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) until their final group match on May 16. This decision has been made with the approval of Cricket Ireland, allowing Little to miss Ireland’s upcoming T20I series against Pakistan and tri-series in the Netherlands.

Little’s absence from the Ireland squad is a significant blow as they prepare for the T20 World Cup in June. However, Cricket Ireland has allowed him to stay with the Titans due to his impressive performances in the IPL. In his first appearance of the season, Little took 4 for 45 against the Chennai Super Kings.

Ireland’s provisional 15-man squad for the World Cup remains unchanged from the one that faced Afghanistan in their recent T20I series. The squad will face Pakistan in three T20Is, starting in Dublin on Friday, and then play a tri-series with Netherlands and Scotland from May 19-24.

Paul Stirling, Ireland’s white-ball captain, will appear at his eighth successive T20 World Cup. He is the fifth-highest run-scorer in men’s T20I history and has played a crucial role in Ireland’s success in the tournament.

The squad has undergone minor changes since 2022, when Ireland reached the Super 12s. Ross Adair, Neil Rock, and Ben White have been added to the squad, while Stephen Doheny, Fionn Hand, Conor Olphert, and Simi Singh have been omitted.

“The squad is one that we have gradually developed and tested out over the last 18 or so months,” said Heinrich Malan, Ireland’s coach. “We have an intensive block of T20 cricket coming up this month ahead of the T20 World Cup, and we will be aiming to win as many of those games as possible.”

Ireland will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against India on June 5 and will face Canada, USA, and Pakistan in the group stage.

The Australian sensation accomplished this remarkable feat during Delhi’s match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Prior to McGurk’s historic achievement, several other IPL stars had registered two half-centuries in 20 balls or less, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nicholas Pooran, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, and Travis Head. However, McGurk’s three such knocks in a single season set him apart as a truly exceptional talent.

In the ongoing IPL season, McGurk has amassed 309 runs at an impressive average of 44.14 and a remarkable strike rate of 235.87. His tally includes four half-centuries, with his highest score being 84. He has also struck 30 fours and 26 sixes, showcasing his power-hitting prowess.

Within the powerplay itself, McGurk has been a force to reckon with, scoring 245 runs in just 96 balls at an average of 61.2 and a strike rate of 255.20. His powerplay exploits include 29 fours and 19 sixes.

Notably, McGurk is the only Delhi Capitals batter to have scored a half-century within the powerplay in six overs, a feat he has achieved twice, against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians.

In the match against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first. McGurk’s blistering knock set the tone for Delhi’s innings, which ended with a total of 220/5. Rajasthan Royals, in response, fell short by 15 runs, handing Delhi Capitals a crucial victory.
