IPL 2024 Playoffs Race Heats Up: RR Leads, MI in Contention

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs race is intensifying, with Rajasthan Royals (RR) leading the pack and no team yet eliminated from contention. RR has dominated the competition so far, amassing 14 points. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are all tied at 10 points each. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Gujarat Titans (GT) are also in the hunt with 8 points apiece.

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has predicted RR, KKR, and CSK as his favorites to reach the playoffs, with the fourth spot being a toss-up between SRH and Mumbai Indians (MI).

“Three teams are selecting themselves: CSK, KKR, and RR. There are two teams that I think… One is SRH, and I don’t know why, but I feel like taking a gamble on MI, no matter what,” Sidhu said in a video posted by Star Sports. “I always feel MI has the tenacity to overcome difficult situations. They are like a rubber ball, the more you hit them, the stronger they become. If they can sort out their bowling and Hardik [Pandya] comes back into his own, MI is a lethal side.”

MI has struggled to gain momentum in IPL 2024, sitting eighth in the points table with three victories. The Hardik Pandya-led side has faced controversies and suffered three consecutive defeats at the start of the competition.

Sidhu previously commented on the speculation surrounding Hardik replacing Rohit Sharma as MI captain. “Nobody can digest the fact that India’s hero, India’s captain, is not the captain of our franchise. ‘What wrong has he done?’ is what fans of the franchise would be thinking,” Sidhu said on Star Sports. “But what does he have to do? There is nothing that succeeds like success. If he had won these two matches, there wouldn’t have been any noise.”

Indian Coach Abhay Sharma Appointed Head Coach of Uganda Men’s Cricket Team

Abhay Sharma, a seasoned Indian coach, has been appointed as the head coach of the Uganda men’s cricket team. This marks a significant milestone for Uganda, as it prepares for its historic debut at the T20 World Cup in June.

Sharma brings a wealth of experience to the role, having coached notable teams in the Indian domestic circuit, including the Delhi Ranji Team, Rest of India, and India A & B in the Deodhar Trophy. He has also served as the fielding coach for the senior India men’s and women’s teams, as well as the India A and India Under-19 men’s teams.

“We selected Abhay Sharma for his strong leadership qualities and impressive track record of success at professional and international levels,” said Jackson Kavuma, secretary of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA). “His coaching stints with notable teams demonstrate his deep understanding of the game and ability to nurture players.”

Sharma expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his commitment to the team’s aspirations. “I am very grateful to UCA for this opportunity to work with a bunch of talented national cricketers,” he said. “Having been in Uganda for just a couple of days, it already feels like my second home.”

“I am here to contribute to the team’s aspirations, which include defeating the top sides in the world in the upcoming World Cup,” Sharma added. “Additionally, I intend to focus on the development team and work with as many young cricketers to build numbers.”

Uganda Cricket has made significant strides in the past year, but Sharma identified areas for improvement, particularly in fielding. “What I have read in the newspapers and what I have seen in the data is that we have lost a couple of opportunities in the field,” he said. “And yet even after missing out on those chances, we still qualified for the World Cup!”

“Imagine how much better we can perform if we address these lapses,” Sharma continued. “With enhanced game awareness and mental fortitude, we can compete with the world’s best teams on any given day.”

Uganda allrounder Alpesh Ramjani welcomed Sharma’s appointment, saying, “His experience is a fortune for us. It is definitely going to help us in the World Cup, as well as for the development of the players individually.”

At the T20 World Cup, Uganda will face formidable opponents in Group C, including Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and West Indies. They will kick off their campaign on June 4 against Afghanistan in Guyana.

Pakistan are currently fifth on the women’s championship table with eight wins and 13 losses in 21 ODIs. Ahead of them on the points table are Australia, South Africa, England, and New Zealand. The top five teams from the championship, along with hosts India, will directly qualify for the 2025 ODI Women’s World Cup. The remaining teams will participate in a qualifier tournament.

Pakistan started off the ODI series against West Indies with a 113-run loss. They then suffered a narrow, two-wicket defeat in the second game before going down in the third ODI by 88 runs. With scores of 140*, 44, and 141, Hayley Matthews was the star of the series as she finished with 325 runs while averaging 162.50. She was also the joint-leading wicket-taker along with Dar, picking up six wickets.

Pakistan will now compete in a five-match T20I series against West Indies which gets underway on April 26 and will run through till May 3. All matches will be played in Karachi. They will then travel to England with the first T20I scheduled to be played on May 11 in Birmingham.
