Marcus Stoinis’ blistering unbeaten century propelled Lucknow Super Giants to a stunning six-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL encounter on Tuesday. The Australian all-rounder’s 124-run knock, studded with 13 fours and six sixes, helped LSG chase down a daunting target of 211 at the Chepauk.

Stoinis’ innings was a stark contrast to the elegant century scored by CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Indian batter’s 108-run knock, featuring 12 fours and three sixes, laid the foundation for CSK’s competitive total. Shivam Dube’s 66-run cameo further boosted the Super Kings’ innings.

Pooran’s dismissal left Stoinis with the responsibility of guiding LSG home. The Australian responded with a flurry of boundaries in the 19th over, reducing the equation to 17 runs off the final over.

Stoinis then smashed Mustafizur Rahman for three fours and a six in the last over, sealing the victory with three balls to spare.

Earlier, Gaikwad and Dube had provided the impetus to CSK’s innings after a slow start. Gaikwad’s classic strokeplay, characterized by precise timing and gap placement, was a delight to watch. He reached his fifty off just 28 balls and went on to score his second IPL century.

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder, is poised to make a return to white-ball cricket next month in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain revealed that Shakib is expected to arrive in Dhaka at the end of April and could feature in a couple of Dhaka Premier League (DPL) matches before joining the national team.

Shakib has been on a break from white-ball cricket since the 2023 ODI World Cup due to an eye condition and a finger injury. He returned to international cricket in the Chattogram Test against Sri Lanka earlier this month.

Bangladesh have announced a 17-man preparatory squad that will train for three days in Chattogram from April 26. The group doesn’t include Shakib or Mustafizur Rahman, who is playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL until May 1. Ashraf said that Mustafizur would also miss the first T20I against Zimbabwe on May 3 in Chattogram.

The training squad includes Mohammad Saifuddin, who returns after a long injury layoff. He last played for Bangladesh shortly before the 2022 T20 World Cup and returned to action in this season’s BPL, where he was part of Fortune Barishal’s title-winning squad.

“Definitely (Mohammad) Saifuddin is a promising player and if he is not injured he could have more international experience,” Ashraf said. “He is ahead with his batting but in bowling he has competitors. So it’s a good opportunity for him to get back into his groove in the Zimbabwe series because we have a lot of interest in him.”

Bangladesh play the first three T20Is against Zimbabwe in Chattogram on May 3, 5, and 7, and the last two T20Is in Dhaka on May 10 and 12.
