Australia Determined to Reclaim Border-Gavaskar Trophy from India

Australia Determined to Reclaim Border-Gavaskar Trophy from India

Australia’s Test batter Steven Smith has expressed the team’s determination to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from India, a title they have not held since 2014-15. The current generation of Australian stars, including captain Pat Cummins, have yet to secure a Test series victory over India, despite winning the World Test Championship (WTC) title last year.

Australia’s last Border-Gavaskar triumph came in the 2014-15 series, when they defeated India 2-0. Since then, they have suffered consecutive defeats on home soil, including a remarkable comeback by India in the 2020-21 series.

“We are probably the two best teams at the moment in Test cricket,” Smith said. “We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there. They’ve been great out here the last couple of times they’ve played really good cricket. Hopefully, we can turn the tables. It’s been ten years since we last won the Border Gavaskar trophy, so we need to do that this year.”

Smith’s sentiments were echoed by his teammate Nathan Lyon, who emphasized the team’s hunger to reverse their fortunes against India. “It’s been ten years of unfinished business,” Lyon said. “I know we’re extremely hungry to turn things around, especially here at home.”

The five-match Test series between Australia and India will commence in November 2022 at the Perth Stadium. The series will be a crucial test for both teams, as they seek to establish their dominance in Test cricket.

England's 'Bazball' Era Faces Test Without Stokes

England’s ‘Bazball’ Era Faces Test Without Stokes

England’s Test series against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford, commencing Wednesday, presents an opportunity for several players to prove their worth in the absence of injured captain Ben Stokes. Stokes’ hamstring injury has ruled him out of the three-match contest, leaving England without their inspirational leader for the first time since the inception of the dynamic “Bazball” era under Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

Ollie Pope, England’s vice-captain, will assume the captaincy despite having led Surrey in only one first-class match. The team announced on Monday that fast bowler Matthew Potts has been recalled, bolstering their attack to five bowlers.

Dan Lawrence, rarely deployed as an opener in county cricket, returns to the England side after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, filling the vacancy created by Zak Crawley’s fractured finger. Crawley sustained the injury during England’s 3-0 whitewash of the West Indies last month.

England is expected to achieve a similar result against Sri Lanka, who, like the West Indies, have played only one warm-up match before the first Test. However, England’s approach under McCullum has often defied conventional cricket wisdom, so it is unsurprising that they have opted against replacing Crawley with a specialist opener.

Lawrence himself believes his aggressive style aligns well with the current England setup. “I think that’s the style of cricketer that Baz McCullum and Ben Stokes are generally after,” Lawrence said. “I’m just going to go out there and try to be as free as possible.”

Sri Lanka, while lacking the star power of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, boasts experienced performers in Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne. Dhananjaya de Silva’s side will also benefit from the guidance of interim coach Sanath Jayasuriya, a Sri Lankan great, and former England batsman Ian Bell, who provides local knowledge.

Sri Lanka’s last Test match was in April, but they recently upset India in a three-match one-day international series. Jayasuriya believes the timing of the current campaign could favor Sri Lanka. “The fact that we have got a late-summer tour is great,” he said. “It’s more similar to our conditions than the early summer tours.”

Bumrah's Captaincy Aspirations Divide Cricket Experts

Bumrah’s Captaincy Aspirations Divide Cricket Experts

Jasprit Bumrah’s Captaincy Aspirations Draw Mixed Reactions from Former Pakistan Cricketer

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s recent comments about the potential for pace bowlers to excel as captains have sparked a debate within the cricketing community. While Bumrah believes that fast bowlers possess the necessary leadership qualities, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has expressed a different perspective.

In an interview, Bumrah cited the successful captaincies of Kapil Dev and Imran Khan, who led India and Pakistan to World Cup victories, respectively. However, Ali argues that both Dev and Khan were appointed as captains only after they had established themselves as all-rounders, not just bowlers.

“About Jasprit Bumrah’s statement, it’s just like how Babar Azam likes captaincy. In my opinion, he should not chase captaincy. He is a top-class bowler and should be focusing just on that,” Ali said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Ali further clarified the distinction between a bowler and an all-rounder when it comes to leadership roles. “He gave the examples of Kapil Dev and Imran Khan’s captaincy. However, they had become all-rounders, which is why they succeeded as captains. They were not appointed captains when they came into their teams as bowlers. This is the difference between a bowler and an all-rounder.”

While acknowledging the success of Australian pacer Pat Cummins as a captain, Ali pointed out that there are very few fast bowlers who have thrived in the role of a captain or coach.

“He also spoke about Pat Cummins. Yes, Cummins is a good captain, but there are very few fast bowlers who can become a good coach or captain. My best wishes to Jasprit Bumrah. There is a chance that he could be made the captain after the Champions Trophy,” Ali added.

Bumrah has previously led India as a stand-in captain during the one-off Test against England at Edgbaston in 2022 and also captained India to a 2-0 victory in a three-match T20I series against Ireland last year.

BCCI Earns Record Surplus of Rs 5120 Crore from IPL 2023

BCCI Earns Record Surplus of Rs 5120 Crore from IPL 2023

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has witnessed a remarkable financial surge, earning a surplus of Rs 5120 crore from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. This represents a significant 116% increase compared to the Rs 2367 crore surplus generated in IPL 2022.

The BCCI’s total income from IPL 2023 amounted to Rs 11,769 crore, marking a substantial 78% year-on-year growth. However, the expenditure also increased by 66% to Rs 6648 crore, as per the BCCI’s annual report for 2022-23.

The primary drivers behind this financial growth were the new media rights and sponsorship deals. The new media rights deal, valued at Rs 48,390 crore for the 2023-27 cycle, commenced with IPL 2023. Disney Star secured the IPL TV rights for Rs 23,575 crore, while Jio Cinema acquired the digital rights for Rs 23,758 crore.

Additionally, the IPL title rights were sold to Tata Sons for Rs 2500 crore. These lucrative deals have significantly boosted the BCCI’s revenue streams.

Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team has decided not to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The BCCI has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host India’s matches in Sri Lanka or Dubai instead.

This decision stems from the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. Since 2008, India has not participated in any cricket tournaments held in Pakistan. The last bilateral series between the two nations was held in India from December 2012 to January 2013.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had proposed that India play all its matches in one city, reportedly Lahore. However, the BCCI has rejected this proposal, citing security concerns.

Cricket's Funny Side: Hilarious Moments That Lighten the Field

Cricket’s Funny Side: Hilarious Moments That Lighten the Field

Cricket, a sport renowned for its intensity and drama, also has a lighter side that often brings laughter to the field. From comical mishaps to hilarious incidents, cricket has witnessed its fair share of humorous moments that have become viral on the internet.

One of the most memorable funny cricket videos features former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq. Known for his robust physique, Inzamam was involved in several comical run-out incidents. In one such incident, he was caught short of his crease after a mix-up with his batting partner. As he attempted to regain his ground, he stumbled and fell, much to the amusement of the crowd.

Another hilarious moment occurred during an ODI between India and Australia. Late Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds was fielding when a streaker invaded the pitch. Instead of chasing the streaker, Symonds charged at him with a menacing look, sending the crowd into fits of laughter.

Fielding mishaps are also a common source of humor in cricket. A video of a fielder dropping a simple catch has gone viral, with the fielder’s comical reaction adding to the amusement. Similarly, a mix-up between two batsmen while running between the wickets has resulted in a hilarious collision, leaving both players sprawled on the ground.

Even the execution of shots and bowling actions can provide comedic relief. A video of a batsman attempting a reverse sweep but completely missing the ball has become a viral sensation. Another video shows a bowler delivering a comical bowling action, with his exaggerated arm movements and facial expressions drawing laughter from the crowd.

These funny cricket videos serve as a reminder that while the sport is serious, it also has plenty of room for humor and light-hearted incidents. These moments not only entertain fans but also add a touch of levity to the intense world of cricket.

Sai Kishore Eyes Comeback as India's Top Spinner

Sai Kishore Eyes Comeback as India’s Top Spinner

Sai Kishore, the promising all-rounder from Tamil Nadu, is poised for a comeback after overcoming a debilitating neck injury. The Gujarat Titans player made waves in IPL 2024 with his match-winning spell against Punjab Kings, earning him the Player of the Match award. However, his success was cut short when he sustained a neck injury while playing golf.

Undeterred, Kishore sought rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. In July, he returned to competitive action in the Tamil Nadu Premier League for Tiruppur Tamizhans. Reflecting on his recovery journey, Kishore expressed gratitude for the support he received from various individuals, including his wife.

“The neck is essential for everything we do,” Kishore said. “I couldn’t move or sit without excruciating pain. I had to set alarms every two hours to wake up and walk.”

Despite the challenges, Kishore remained determined to return to the field. “Getting back to normal life was an achievement in itself,” he said. “Cricket was a bonus.”

Kishore exudes confidence in his abilities, declaring himself “one of the best spinners” in India. He aspires to play alongside Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket, believing it would be an invaluable learning experience.

“I’ve never played alongside Jadeja in red-ball format,” Kishore said. “It would be a great opportunity to learn from him. I’m confident and ready more than ever.”

Kishore’s comeback has been bolstered by his selection in the Duleep Trophy. He has also represented India in three T20Is at the Asian Games.

Steve Smith Signs with Sixers, Dismisses Retirement Plans

Steve Smith Signs with Sixers, Dismisses Retirement Plans

Australian cricket legend Steve Smith has dismissed any thoughts of retirement, despite being overlooked for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup. The 35-year-old recently signed a three-year deal with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), indicating his continued passion for the game.

Smith’s decision to join the Sixers suggests he intends to play at least four BBL matches this summer, fitting them in between the final Test against India and the tour of Sri Lanka. Despite his omission from the T20 World Cup squad, Smith remains committed to competing in all formats of cricket.

“I don’t have any plans [to retire], I’m just enjoying playing at the moment,” Smith told reporters. “I’m pretty relaxed and I’m looking forward to this summer.”

Smith’s recent performances as an opener for Australia have been mixed. In the home summer against the West Indies and New Zealand, he averaged just 28.25 in eight innings. However, his career average of 56.97 suggests he is still a formidable batsman.

The veteran batsman admitted that his teammates prefer him at number four, where he has spent most of his Test career. However, he emphasized that he is willing to bat anywhere for the team.

“I’m happy wherever and I’ll bat anywhere for the team,” Smith said. “For me it’s just a position.”

Smith’s future role in the Australian Test team remains uncertain. He is expected to play in the upcoming five-Test series against India, but it is unclear whether he will open the batting or return to his preferred position at number four.

Virat Kohli: 16 Years of International Cricket Excellence

Virat Kohli: 16 Years of International Cricket Excellence

Virat Kohli, the star Indian batter, has etched his name among the greatest cricketers of all time. Since his international debut in 2008, Kohli has propelled Indian cricket to unprecedented heights with his exceptional batting prowess and record-breaking achievements.

Despite stepping down as T20I captain, Kohli remains on track to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary feat of scoring 100 centuries in international cricket. Beyond his contributions to Team India, Kohli has been an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception in 2008.

Despite RCB’s consistent performances, they have yet to claim an IPL trophy. However, the franchise boasts a massive fan base, making it one of the most popular in the league. Recently, Kohli expressed his preference for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as his favorite rivals in the IPL, over five-time champions Mumbai Indians.

On Sunday, Kohli celebrated 16 years of international cricket. His debut came in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla in 2008, shortly after leading India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to social media to congratulate Kohli on his milestone, stating, “16 years ago today, a 19-year-old @imVkohli stepped onto the international stage for the first time, marking the beginning of what has become a truly legendary career. Congratulations to the King on completing 16 years in international cricket!”

In his debut match, Kohli opened the batting with current India head coach Gautam Gambhir and scored 12 runs. He concluded his maiden international series with 159 runs in five matches, averaging 31.80.

Since then, Kohli has evolved into a formidable batting force for India. In 295 ODIs, he has amassed 13,906 runs, including a record 50 centuries, 27 of which have come in run-chases. In 113 Test matches, he has accumulated 8,848 runs, while in 125 T20Is, he has scored 4,188 runs.

Morne Morkel Takes on India's Bowling Coach Role, Aiming to Gain Bowlers' Trust

Morne Morkel Takes on India’s Bowling Coach Role, Aiming to Gain Bowlers’ Trust

Morne Morkel, the former South African fast bowler, has taken on the significant role of India’s bowling coach, succeeding renowned predecessors Bharat Arun and Paras Mhambrey. At 39, Morkel brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Pakistan’s bowling coach and worked with New Zealand and Namibia in the T20 World Cups.

One of the key challenges Morkel faces is gaining the trust of the Indian bowlers, which is essential for effective communication and success in his new position. Ex-South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel, Morne’s brother, emphasizes that earning the trust of established team members will be his main task.

“It goes without saying that being on the Indian team’s coaching staff is probably the biggest responsibility or coaching job out there,” Albie Morkel told Mid-day. “The passion for the sport and the success that the team had in the past makes it a job with no room for error.”

Morkel will collaborate with some of the world’s best bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, widely considered the best fast bowler across all formats. Albie Morkel believes that Morne admires Bumrah’s versatility and ability to perform in various conditions.

“Not sure but Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah,” Albie said when asked about the Indian bowlers Morne admires. “Once again, I don’t know what his exact thoughts would be, but Jasprit is the best all-format bowler in the world. He is very special, and I’m sure Morne would love to work with him.”

Despite not having an extensive coaching resume like some of his predecessors, Morkel’s experience is noteworthy. He has worked with bowlers from different countries and cultures, which will be valuable in his new role. Albie Morkel highlights the importance of his brother’s experience, particularly in addressing the mental aspects of the game, which can be crucial for bowlers dealing with challenges such as injuries.

“It’s a fine line between being too technical and what’s right,” Albie said. “I think the game has changed so much over the last decade. Younger bowlers or bowlers who struggle with injuries probably need more technical work, and after that, it’s about fine-tuning what you have. The mental aspect becomes very important then to sustain longevity.”

Morkel’s appointment has the potential to bring a fresh perspective to India’s bowling attack, possibly unlocking new achievements for the team. His combination of experience, technical expertise, and understanding of the game’s mental demands sets the stage for an intriguing chapter in Indian cricket.
