Phoenix captain Moeen Ali won the toss and elected to bowl first. Kiwi speedster Adam Milne struck early, removing Matthew Hurst in the second over. Tim Southee conceded a six to Phil Salt but dismissed him soon after. Sean Abbott and Milne continued the onslaught, accounting for Paul Walter and Max Holden respectively. Chris Wood wrapped up the innings with the wicket of Sikandar Raza, restricting the Originals to a mere 41 for 5.

In response, Birmingham Phoenix made light work of the chase. Jamie Smith set the tone with two boundaries off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the first over. Ben Duckett took over the mantle, smashing Tom Aspinwall for a six and three boundaries. Smith departed for 14, but Duckett (22*) and Moeen (6*) guided the Phoenix home with eight balls to spare.

Milne, who finished with figures of 2 for 8, was named the Meerkat Match Hero. He attributed his success to the swing and seam on offer, emphasizing the importance of adapting to different conditions in shortened formats.

“The players are excited for the first Test,” said Mushtaq. “Shakib and Mushfiqur are playing a crucial role in boosting morale. They are experienced and providing guidance to the younger players.”

Shakib’s arrival in Lahore on Wednesday has further energized the team. Despite a tumultuous week in Canada, where he faced political backlash and controversy, Shakib has remained focused on cricket.

Mushfiqur, meanwhile, is gaining valuable match practice in a four-day game against Pakistan A in Islamabad. This tour provides a rare opportunity for the Bangladesh A team to connect with the senior team.

Mushtaq believes Bangladesh has the potential to succeed in Test matches away from home. “They have the basics and the belief,” he said. “We will instill in them the confidence that they can beat anyone.”

He praised the Bangladesh spinners, particularly Rishad Hossain, who has made significant progress under his guidance. “The spinners are eager to learn and receptive to my suggestions,” said Mushtaq. “Taijul [Islam] and [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz are match-winners. They are coachable and good listeners.”

Mushtaq’s focus is on providing tactical and technical advice to the spinners. “You have to remind them of the basics, even with their experience,” he said. “I am honored to work with them and hope to make a difference.”

The Lions gained a slender six-run lead heading into the second day, losing four wickets on the opening evening, three of them to Prabath Jayasuriya’s left-arm spin. However, by the time rain intervened, the Lions had extended their lead to 185.

Hamza Shaikh, the 18-year-old Warwickshire batter making his first-class debut, impressed with a gritty 91 from No. 4. He forged a crucial 104-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Kasey Aldridge, the Somerset allrounder, who contributed 78.

Jayasuriya emerged as the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, finishing with 5 for 102 from 31.2 overs. Kasun Rajitha chipped in with 2 for 51, but Lahiru Kumara proved expensive, conceding 92 runs from 18 overs and only dismissing tailender Ajeet Singh Dale.

The Lions fielded a depleted side, featuring two first-class debutants in Shaikh and Farhan Ahmed. The ECB withdrew only one player, Josh Hull, from the Hundred, which has attracted most of England’s top young talent.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have not played a Test since their tour of Bangladesh in April, and most of their squad have not featured in first-class cricket since the domestic four-day tournament concluded in early May. Vishwa Fernando, who is not playing against the Lions, claimed 12 wickets in two appearances for Yorkshire in June.

Sri Lanka’s 18-man squad will travel to Manchester after the tour game for the first of three Tests against England, starting on Wednesday at Emirates Old Trafford. Former England batter Ian Bell will join them as a batting coach, providing local knowledge for the series.

While Pant is eager to gain match practice after missing 15 months of cricket due to a car accident, his preparation for the upcoming international season remains a priority. He will return to red-ball training after the first match of the DPL and focus on preparing for the long-format season, starting with the Duleep Trophy in early September.

The DDCA and Purani Delhi 6 management have expressed their appreciation for Pant’s gesture while respecting his commitments. Pant’s participation in the DPLT20 opener is expected to generate significant excitement and inspire young cricketers in Delhi.
