Mumbai Indians Underutilized Bumrah, Allowed Punjab Kings to Rally: Tom Moody

Tom Moody, a former Australian all-rounder, has criticized the Mumbai Indians (MI) for underutilizing pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah during their IPL match against Punjab Kings (PBKS). Moody believes that this allowed PBKS to rally from a precarious position and come within striking distance of MI’s total.

In the match, Bumrah was matchless, taking off the dangerous Shashank Singh, Rilee Rossouw, and opener Sam Curran to help MI win by nine runs. MI had given PBKS a 193 target.

However, Moody pointed out that Bumrah was removed from the attack just as PBKS appeared to be losing ground, which allowed the home team to rally.

“Again, Mumbai leaning on him so much to turn their fortunes around. He bowled two overs early on and had the Punjab Kings on their back. But, interestingly enough, he didn’t bowl another over until the 13th,” said Moody on Star Sports Cricket Live.

“He’s at the peak of his powers at the moment. And that’s my point of where I think the Mumbai Indians let the Punjab Kings back into this contest. (Gerald) Coetzee and Bumrah for mine, and I’ll be interested to hear what the other fast bowlers think on this show. Should (Bumrah) have bowled again to be able to put Punjab completely out onto the campus,” he added.

Former South African fast Dale Steyn agreed with Moody, saying that MI’s front-line pacers Bumrah and Coetzee needed assistance from other bowlers. He suggested that MI’s bowling department was suffering from an unmotivated Hardik Pandya.

“We want to see them (MI) close out games early by bringing Bumrah back or Coetzee. But then they have to depend on guys like Hardik to finish off, who hasn’t been bowling as well of late and some of the other bowlers travelling like (Romario) Shepherd, they may struggle in the back end.”

“Mumbai are in a situation now where they have to tactically figure things out, but they also need somebody to step up, their bowlers to step up and really help out Bumrah and Coetzee, because if they (MI) keep going the way they are, they might lose more points again.”

Moody also commented on Suryakumar Yadav, who recently recovered from an ankle injury and a hernia operation. He said that Yadav needed to participate for the whole league season in order to fully recover.

On Thursday, “Mr 360 degrees” amassed a 53-ball 78 to lead MI to 192. Moody said that the middle-order hitter needed to return to optimal health in order to help India’s chances of winning the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

“It’s important that he slowly works back into full fitness, he needs to be playing for the whole 40 overs and that would be great. Not that he bowls or anything but for his own peace of mind and fitness for that the preparation for what is beyond the IPL. It was a great innings today (from him).

Steyn praised PBSK batter Ashutosh Sharma for the sweep shot he employed against Bumrah, something which has not been used against the India quick too often.

“I mean, IPL never ceases to disappoint us with close games and creating new heroes… Bumrah bowls a no-ball, and the next thing Ashutosh goes down and plays that sweep that goes for six.”

After the match, Pandya acknowledged the team’s character and resilience. “Very good game of cricket. Everyone’s nerve got tested,” Pandya said. “We did speak about before the game that the character will be checked in this game. Naturally you think you’re ahead in the game. But we knew IPL has a tendency to produce these games.”

Instead of taking the usual slam-bang approach, Yadav took his time and opened his arms. The explosive right-handed batter discussed his strategy and whether the management had given him any specific instructions.

“Nothing as much there was a talk going on. Last day we had a batters meeting that there will be a batter who will have to bat at least 15 to 17 overs because when we had a net session we felt that wicket will be a little difficult to get big runs on the board. But I just wanted to be myself. I took a little bit of more time today and after Rohit got out there had to be a batter who batted a little more. I just continued the way I bat,” Yadav said.

Jasprit Bumrah (3/21) and Coetzee’s (3/32) influential spells, along with a scintillating 78-run knock from Yadav, helped the Mumbai Indians defeat the Punjab Kings by nine runs.

Sunil Narine’s remarkable transformation as an opener for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) has been attributed to the strategic vision of team mentor Gautam Gambhir. Narine’s maiden T20 century, a blistering 56-ball 109 against Rajasthan Royals, has solidified his status as a formidable force at the top of the order.

Prior to this season, Narine had struggled to make an impact in the lower middle order, amassing only 154 runs over the past three seasons. However, Gambhir’s decision to promote him to the opening slot has unlocked his potential, with Narine already accumulating 276 runs in just six games.

After his historic century at the Eden Gardens, Narine acknowledged Gambhir’s role in his resurgence. “You can see the way Narine is batting this time. In every match, he’s making runs, opening the batting and that was his (Gambhir’s) idea only,” said KKR teammate Rinku Singh.

Narine also holds the record for the fastest 50 in the Bangladesh Premier League, with a 13-ball half-century for Comilla Victorians in 2022.

Rinku Singh believes that Narine’s transformation is not due to any significant technical changes, but rather a result of his hard work and improved patience. “He’s more patient now. Earlier he used to swing his bat to every ball, now he has restrained himself and playing according to the merit of the ball. He is batting thoughtfully and wisely,” said Rinku.

Despite Narine’s heroics, KKR fell short against Rajasthan Royals, with Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 107 guiding the Royals to an eight-wicket victory. However, Rinku remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. “Our team is doing very well. We are not thinking much (about the loss). Credit to RR they did well. Also, you need a bit of luck in your favour. It was there day. Buttler innings was the turning point. Full credit goes to him,” said Rinku.

While the KKR top order has been firing on all cylinders, Rinku, who was the team’s leading run-getter in IPL 2023 with 474 runs, has had limited opportunities. This season, he has scored 83 runs at an impressive strike rate of 184-plus, but is yet to register a half-century.

“Our top order batters are doing so well that I’m not getting much opportunities to show my batting this time,” said Rinku. However, he remains confident that he will be back to his best soon. “I had a niggle, I will be back to playing the full match against RCB on Sunday,” he said.

In Tasmania, Kuhnemann is expected to become the team’s leading spinner in both Shield and Marsh Cup cricket. He will bolster Tasmania’s attack, which narrowly missed out on winning the Shield title last season. Kuhnemann remains contracted to play for the Brisbane Heat in the BBL for the next two seasons.

Burns, on the other hand, has been left out of Queensland’s contract after being dropped from both the Shield and Marsh Cup sides last summer. His Shield omission came as a surprise, given his strong performances earlier in the season. Despite being the Bulls’ leading run-scorer through the first seven games, Queensland opted to promote younger batters in the second half of the season.

Queensland has decided not to offer the 34-year-old Burns a contract. He has played 23 Tests for Australia and scored four Test centuries. He is also out of contract at the Melbourne Stars.

The Bulls have instead promoted opener Angus Lovell onto the contract list after his Shield debut last summer. Queensland has also signed four of Australia’s Under-19 World Cup winners for next season, including captain Hugh Weibgen and promising quick Callum Vidler.

Queensland is still searching for a new coach after parting ways with Wade Seccombe last month.

According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pandya failed to complete the 20 overs of bowling within the stipulated time. This is the first instance of such an offense by Pandya, which resulted in a fine of INR 12 lakh.

The BCCI statement confirmed the fine, stating that “Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Punjab Kings.”

A repeat of the offense could lead to more severe penalties for Pandya and other Mumbai Indians players.

In the match itself, Mumbai Indians emerged victorious, securing their third win of the IPL 2024 campaign. Chasing a target of 193 runs, Punjab Kings struggled to gain momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals.

Despite a valiant effort from Ashutosh Sharma, who scored 61 runs off 28 balls, and Harpreet Brar, who contributed 21 runs off 20 balls, Punjab Kings fell short of the target, being bowled out for 183 runs in the last over.
