Despite the absence of star player Virat Kohli, who is expected to join the squad soon, the camp has been buzzing with excitement. Du Plessis expressed his admiration for Flower, describing him as an “incredible coach” and a “kind and big-hearted man.”

Flower, in turn, shared his enthusiasm for the new chapter with RCB, emphasizing the privilege and excitement of being part of the franchise. “New chapter to write in RCB story, we have been given the chance to write and it is a privilege, something to be very excited about,” he stated.

“He reminds me of a combination of Steve Smith, David Warner, and even Phil Hughes. They’re all aggressive run-scorers who can find runs in areas where others struggle. For him to score three centuries in seven games this season, in bowler-friendly conditions, demonstrates his mindset of constantly scoring runs and pressuring the bowlers.”

NSW began their season with two losses and a draw, extending their winless streak in red-ball cricket to 15 matches. However, a 10-wicket victory over Western Australia in November sparked a resurgence, propelling NSW to third place in the standings with four wins, three draws, and three losses.

For Queensland, it’s a time for reflection after finishing last on the ladder with only two wins and two draws from 10 matches. They began the final day against NSW at 287 for 8 and were dismissed for 301 despite Xavier Bartlett’s valiant efforts.

NSW aimed to make light work of the run chase, and Hughes adopted a T20 approach, smashing six fours and two sixes on his way to a 29-ball half-century. His dismissal shortly after left NSW at 75 for 3, and there were some anxious moments at 91 for 4 after Matthew Gilkes was dismissed for 6. However, composed innings from Henriques and Davies guided NSW to victory.

Debutant Queensland bowler Callum Vidler claimed 3 for 38, adding to his 2 for 50 in NSW’s first innings. “It’s not the outcome you want on debut, but it was an incredible experience to be out there,” Vidler said.

Musheer Khan, the younger brother of Indian Test debutant Sarfaraz Khan, has etched his name in the annals of Ranji Trophy history by surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record as the youngest Mumbai batter to score a century in the tournament’s final.

In the ongoing Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha, Musheer, aged 19 years and 14 days, crafted a masterful knock of 136 off 326 deliveries, adorned with 10 boundaries. His monumental innings propelled Mumbai to a commanding 500-plus run lead.

Musheer’s achievement is even more remarkable considering that the iconic Tendulkar, who was present at the stands, was just under 22 years old when he scored twin centuries in the 1994-95 season final against Punjab.

The 19-year-old’s exquisite ton came off 255 balls, showcasing his patience and technical prowess. His brother, Sarfaraz, took to Instagram to express his pride and admiration for Musheer’s performance.

Musheer’s journey to this historic moment has been marked by consistent brilliance. In the semifinal against Tamil Nadu, he played a crucial role with a valuable 55 off 131 balls, paving the way for Mumbai’s innings and 70-run victory.

During the quarterfinal against Baroda, Musheer converted his maiden first-class century into a double ton, smashing 203 off 357 balls in the first innings. He followed it up with a quickfire 33 off 25 balls in the second innings, helping Mumbai secure a draw and advance on the basis of their first-innings lead.

In three matches so far, Musheer has amassed 433 runs at an astonishing average of 108.25, including two centuries and a half-century. His best score remains his 203* against Baroda.

Musheer’s talent extends beyond batting. In the U19 World Cup tournament, he played seven matches, scoring 360 runs at an average of 60, with a strike rate of over 98. He scored two centuries and a fifty, ending as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. His best score was an impressive 131.

Additionally, Musheer has played 14 Youth ODIs, scoring 554 runs at an average of 61.55, with two centuries and two fifties. With 13 wickets, he is also a useful spin-bowling all-rounder.

Musheer’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. His elder brother, Sarfaraz, recently made his much-anticipated international debut against England, scoring twin half-centuries in his first Test match.

The Khan brothers are a testament to the depth of talent in Indian cricket. Musheer’s record-breaking performance in the Ranji Trophy final is a harbinger of his potential to become a future star for both Mumbai and India.

“It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury which has got aggravated. It’s unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source told TOI.

Iyer had previously missed two Ranji Trophy matches this season due to back pain. During the recent Test series against England, he informed the Indian team management about the recurring injury. However, after being cleared by the National Cricket Academy’s medical team, the BCCI denied him a central contract due to his absence from Ranji Trophy matches.

The IPL is set to commence on March 22, with KKR playing their first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Kolkata on March 23. Iyer’s injury is a major concern for KKR, who will be without their captain for the crucial initial matches of the tournament.

Bengaluru’s acute water shortage has raised concerns about the fate of the three Indian Premier League (IPL) matches scheduled to be played in the city. However, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has assured that it is well-equipped to meet the water demand for the matches.

The city is facing its worst water crisis in four decades, prompting calls to shift the IPL games out of Bengaluru. However, KSCA CEO Shubendu Ghosh expressed confidence that the association can adhere to the government’s water usage guidelines.

“We are not facing any crisis at the moment,” Ghosh said. “We have received the state government’s notice on water usage, and we are constantly meeting to ensure we follow the guidelines.”

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has prohibited the use of potable water for non-essential purposes, such as gardening and vehicle washing. Ghosh stated that the KSCA will rely on water from the sewage treatment plant (STP) within the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for watering the outfield and pitch.

“We are already using STP water for these purposes,” Ghosh said. “We estimate that we will need 10,000-15,000 liters of water for match purposes, which we are confident we can generate from the STP.”

Ghosh emphasized that the KSCA will not use groundwater for watering. “We are closely monitoring the government’s water usage policy, but we are confident that we can meet all the requirements,” he said.

The first IPL match in Bengaluru will feature the local franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) taking on Punjab Kings on March 25. RCB will then face Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29 and Lucknow SuperGiants on April 2.

RCB officials also expressed confidence in conducting the matches despite the water scarcity. “We are aware of the situation and are in touch with the KSCA,” an official said. “We have two weeks before the first match, so we are confident that we can ensure a smooth conduct of the games.”

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium complies with the norms of the National Green Tribunal, which has implemented systems to address water scarcity scenarios.
