Private Investment in The Hundred May Extend Beyond 2025

Private Investment in The Hundred May Extend Beyond 2025

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is seeking private investment for its Hundred franchises, but the process may extend beyond the initial target of 2025. Vikram Banerjee, director of business operations at the ECB, emphasized the importance of finding the right partners and valuations.

Each of the eight hosting counties holds a 51% stake, with the remaining 49% available for sale by the ECB. The proceeds will be distributed among first-class counties, Marylebone Cricket Club, and the recreational game.

The ECB is collaborating with host venues to assess potential investors, including GMR Group, which has expressed interest in acquiring Hampshire’s stake in Southern Brave. However, the governing body has warned Hampshire that it could lose its stake if GMR does not pay a fair market price.

The ECB has received promising interest from investors, including those from India and the US. The board seeks buyers who can contribute expertise in global engagement, sporting operations, and in-ground experience.

While the plan is to announce investments by early 2025, Banerjee acknowledged that the process could take longer. He did not rule out a partial sale, but believes the current level of interest suggests that all teams will find suitable partners.

London Spirit is expected to be the most sought-after franchise due to its prestigious venue, Lord’s. However, the ECB will not rush into a decision and will hold onto teams if the right partners are not found.

The Hundred’s current media rights are fixed until 2028, and a salary cap ensures a level playing field. Expansion of the competition to include additional teams is unlikely before 2029, as the ECB wants to assess the growth and sustainability of the tournament.

Akash Deep Emerges as a Quiet Force in India's Test Pace Attack

Akash Deep Emerges as a Quiet Force in India’s Test Pace Attack

Akash Deep, the young Bengal pacer, has made a quiet but significant impact on the Indian Test team since his debut in 2023. In his first match against England in Ranchi, he claimed three wickets in his opening spell, including the prized scalp of Zak Crawley. In the recent Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, he once again showcased his prowess by dismissing Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque in consecutive deliveries, with the ball jagging back into the left-handers and breaching their defenses.

Deep’s rise to the national team is a testament to his hard work and dedication. He credits the rigors of domestic cricket for preparing him for the challenges of international cricket. “The domestic structure is so good that when you reach here, you already know many things,” he said. “So, you get an idea of your bowling and what you must do. I don’t find anything new here.”

Deep’s bowling style is similar to that of Mohammed Shami, with the ability to move the ball both ways while attacking the stumps. This has led to comparisons between the two bowlers, and Deep is seen as a potential successor to Shami in the Indian pace attack.

“When you are playing in place of bowlers who have contributed to the country, then, along with being proud, I feel that I have to do something for my country,” Deep said.

Ahead of a long winter in which India will play Tests over the next three months, including five in Australia, Deep could be a key weapon in India’s pace arsenal. With uncertainty over Shami’s comeback after an Achilles tendon surgery, Deep is ready to step up and take over from his state teammate.

Deep’s journey so far has been marked by humility and a focus on the present. “I have worked on my strengths and what I can add to my bowling. I have thought about a few things. When I play here, it is simple. I don’t put extra pressure on myself that I have to go to Australia or some other big series. I stay in the present and think about this match.”

Green Park Wicket to Offer Balanced Test for India and Bangladesh

Green Park Wicket to Offer Balanced Test for India and Bangladesh

The Green Park curator has unveiled the blueprint for the wicket that will host the second Test between India and Bangladesh, promising a surface that will cater to both pacers and spinners over the course of the five-day encounter.

The pitch, which will be used for the Test commencing on Friday, is expected to provide a lively bounce in the initial sessions, favoring the pacers. However, as the match progresses, the spinners are anticipated to come into their own, with the wicket expected to slow down and offer assistance to the tweakers.

“It will have something for everyone,” said curator Shiv Kumar. “It will offer bounce in the first two sessions and it will be pretty good for batting for the first two days. Then, the spinners will come into play on the last three days.”

The pitch has been prepared using black soil sourced from Kali Mitti village near Unnao, a practice that has been followed for years at Green Park. Black soil is known to assist spinners, while red soil typically favors pacers.

“We get this soil tested from the Indian Institute of Technology,” said an official from the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA). “It’s a special soil that is found near a pond in village Kali Mitti. It (bringing black soil from the village) is a practice we have been following for years.”

In an effort to promote environmental sustainability, the UPCA has decided to minimize the use of plastic during the second Test. Plastic plates for serving snacks inside the stadium have been banned, with only paper plates being allowed.

“This is a match at Green Park and we are striving to make it a ‘green’ match,” said stadium director Sanjay Kapur. “We have decided to use as little plastic as possible.”

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Franchises Allowed to Retain Five Players

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Franchises Allowed to Retain Five Players

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for its next mega auction, scheduled for November or December 2025. This highly anticipated event will witness a significant shift in player retention rules, with franchises reportedly allowed to retain up to five players ahead of the auction.

According to sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the decision to increase the retention limit from four to five players aims to provide greater flexibility to franchises in building their squads. However, the Right To Match (RTM) option will not be available in this mega auction.

This change in retention rules is expected to have a major impact on team strategies. Mumbai Indians, for instance, could potentially retain their star-studded lineup of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and a fifth player of their choice.

The IPL has held two mega auctions in the past decade, with four-year intervals in between. The first major auction was held in 2014, followed by the 2018 auction that marked the return of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings after their two-year suspensions.

The 2021 mega auction was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in teams extending the contracts of their players for an additional year. The upcoming IPL mega sale is likely to be a two-day affair, similar to the previous auctions held in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

While some franchises advocate for a larger retention cap of up to eight players, others prefer the existing limit of four or five. The optimal number of retained players remains a topic of debate among IPL teams.

MS Dhoni’s Rare Outburst: A Breach of the IPL Code of Conduct

MS Dhoni, renowned for his composure under pressure, rarely succumbs to emotional outbursts. However, during the 2019 IPL season, fans witnessed a rare moment when his calm demeanor shattered. In a match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), Dhoni’s frustration boiled over due to a controversial no-ball call, leading to a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.

Former CSK teammate and current Gujarat Titans pacer Mohit Sharma recently shed light on this unusual incident on the “2 Sloggers” podcast. Recalling the event, Mohit revealed that Dhoni was already furious after getting out and was sitting in the dugout when the drama unfolded. In the final over of the match, Ben Stokes bowled a high full toss to Mitchell Santner, which appeared to be a no-ball. The umpire at square leg initially raised his arm to signal it, but quickly retracted the call, deciding it wasn’t a no-ball.

This reversal of decision enraged Dhoni, who stormed onto the field to confront the umpires. “We were in the dugout, shouting, ‘Don’t go, don’t go.’ But he didn’t even look back. The way he walked onto the field, (laga ki bhai sher ghus gaya hai) it felt like a lion had entered the arena,” Mohit recalled.

Despite his teammates’ efforts to hold him back, Dhoni’s frustration got the best of him as he fiercely contested the call. “He had just got out and was already furious. He wanted to be in there because generally, he doesn’t leave it to others. He came, sat and all of a sudden, the incident happened. He asked, ‘Did he (the umpire) give it a no-ball?’ We were like, ‘Yeah, he did signal.’ Then he just didn’t stop,” he added.

Dhoni’s outburst led to a fine of 50% of his match fees for violating the IPL Code of Conduct, marking one of the few instances where he allowed his emotions to boil over.

SA20 Auction Set to Feature International Stars

SA20 Auction Set to Feature International Stars

The upcoming SA20 auction promises to be a thrilling affair, with a host of international stars set to go under the hammer. Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph, Naseem Shah, Josh Little, and Josh Hull are among the overseas players who will be up for grabs.

Nearly 200 players, including 115 South Africans, have made the shortlist, but only 13 spots are to be filled up by the six franchises. Paarl Royals have the biggest purse of R11.95m to spend at the auction, followed by MI Cape Town with R8.275m and Pretoria Capitals with R4.575m.

Other overseas attractions in the shortlist include New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis, and Afghanistan wristspinner Qais Ahmad.

“Some of the biggest names on the international T20 circuit have already signed up for season 3 and I am looking forward to see how the teams finalise their squads from this competitive auction list of players,” said Graeme Smith, the former South Africa captain and current SA20 commissioner.

Reeza Hendricks, who was released by Super Kings, is perhaps the most high-profile South African in the shortlist along with fellow opener Tony de Zorzi.

All squads are required to have 19 players, with a minimum of ten South African players, a maximum of seven international players, a rookie, and a wildcard player.

Barring Super Kings, all franchises have announced their wildcard picks. Notably, Paarl Royals picked former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik as their wildcard. Having retired from Indian and international cricket in June earlier this year, Karthik will become the first Indian to feature in the SA20.

Super Kings have until December 30 to lock in their wildcard player.

The SA20 2025 auction will take place on October 1 and the tournament will begin on January 9, clashing with Australia’s Big Bash League, UAE’s ILT20, and New Zealand’s Super Smash.

Virat Kohli's Form Concerns Linger as India Prepares for Second Bangladesh Test

Virat Kohli’s Form Concerns Linger as India Prepares for Second Bangladesh Test

The Indian cricket team is gearing up for the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, which commences on Friday. Having secured a comfortable victory in the first Test, India aims to replicate their success and strengthen their position in the race for the World Test Championship final.

However, Virat Kohli’s poor form in the first Test has raised concerns. Dismissed for 6 and 17 in the two innings, Kohli was dismissed twice in four overs by unheralded pacer Jamshed Alam during a net session on Wednesday. Alam, a 22-year-old from Lucknow, attributed his success to the out-swingers he bowled on a practice pitch that favored pacers.

Despite Kohli’s struggles, former Pakistan player Basit Ali believes the Indian star will regain his form in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, starting on November 22. Ali suggests that Kohli will thrive on the pacy wickets in Australia, where he has a proven track record of success.

“Virat will return to form against Australia,” Ali said. “He will like the pacy wickets in Australia. Big players often lose concentration against weak teams but they do well against tougher oppositions.”

Ali also expressed confidence in India’s ability to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. “People say India win at home but they have won two series in Australia as well,” he said. “India won’t allow Australia to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year as well.”

Kohli’s return to form will be crucial for India’s chances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian team will be eager to prove their dominance against a formidable Australian side and secure their place in the World Test Championship final.

India Set to Dominate Women's T20 World Cup 2024, Predicts Veda Krishnamurthy

India Set to Dominate Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Predicts Veda Krishnamurthy

India Poised for Dominance in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Says Veda Krishnamurthy

Former Indian cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy has expressed confidence in the Indian women’s team’s ability to dominate the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The team departed for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday, where the tournament will commence on October 3.

Krishnamurthy emphasized the importance of adapting to the conditions in the UAE, particularly for the spin-heavy Indian squad. She highlighted the crucial role of Deepti Sharma, who has been a key bowler for the team.

“Adjusting to the conditions is crucial when playing in the UAE, especially with this squad. We rely heavily on spinners, particularly Deepti Sharma, who has been a key bowler for us,” Krishnamurthy said.

She also praised the fast bowlers, especially Pooja Vastrakar, for their ability to hit hard lengths with the semi-new ball. Krishnamurthy believes that if India can start well and get Renuka Singh firing, they will be a formidable force in the tournament.

“It’s all about how they start, and they need Renuka to fire, regardless of the conditions. If they manage that, I think India will be very dominant in this World Cup,” she added.

In the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022, India reached the semi-finals but fell short against Australia. Despite mixed results in the lead-up to this year’s tournament, including losses to Australia and England, India has bounced back with consecutive series wins against Bangladesh.

India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 4 at Dubai International Stadium. They will also play warm-up matches against the West Indies and South Africa before the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan Retires from Cricket Due to Lack of Inspiration

Shikhar Dhawan Retires from Cricket Due to Lack of Inspiration

Shikhar Dhawan, the former Indian opener, has revealed that he retired from cricket due to a lack of inspiration to pursue domestic cricket for a place in the national team. Dhawan, who played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is for India between 2013 and 2022, announced his retirement in August 2023.

Dhawan stated that he had lost the motivation to play domestic cricket, which he had started at a young age. He felt that continuing to play only in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was not enough to maintain his touch and be considered for national selection.

“I thought that continuing IPL and just coming up with two, three months of hard work won’t be enough for me to go and play,” Dhawan said.

Dhawan, who captained Punjab Kings in the IPL, realized that practicing for a few months before the tournament would not be sufficient to earn him a national call-up. He also expressed satisfaction with his achievements in his career.

“I was very happy and satisfied and content with whatever I achieved in my career, and very, very grateful for everything,” he said.

Dhawan praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership as India’s captain, highlighting the team’s T20 World Cup victory under his guidance. He also acknowledged India’s near-miss in the ODI World Cup.

“We were very close in (winning) the ODI World Cup as well, and now we achieved that goal in T20Is,” Dhawan said.

Dhawan’s retirement marks the end of a successful career for the left-handed opener. He is known for his aggressive batting style and has been a key member of India’s limited-overs teams. He holds the record for the highest partnership runs in career for any wicket with Rohit Sharma, having added 5,193 runs in 117 matches.

Lancashire Legend Steven Croft Retires from Professional Cricket

Lancashire Legend Steven Croft Retires from Professional Cricket

Steven Croft, the legendary all-rounder who played a pivotal role in Lancashire’s 2011 County Championship triumph, has bid farewell to professional cricket at the age of 39. Croft, who retired from first-class and List A cricket last year, had been playing T20 cricket for Lancashire this season. However, he has now decided to hang up his boots and transition into a full-time coaching role with the club.

Croft’s final appearance came in Lancashire’s Vitality Blast quarter-final defeat to Sussex earlier this month. It was his 600th match for the club across all formats. He made his Lancashire debut in 2005 and went on to amass 19,183 runs and claim 199 wickets with his offspin.

The highlight of Croft’s career came in 2011 when he scored the winning runs against Somerset at Taunton, securing Lancashire’s first County Championship title in 77 years. Four years later, he captained the T20 team to their maiden T20 Blast title, defeating Northamptonshire in the final at Edgbaston.

Between June 2006 and July 2018, Croft played 148 consecutive T20 matches for Lancashire, an English record. He finishes his career as Lancashire’s leading T20 run-scorer with 5,486 runs.

“My dream as a boy was to play one game for Lancashire, in the end it became 600,” Croft said. “So, after just over two decades of playing for the club, I have taken the decision to retire as a player.”

“I can confidently say I have realised my dream and more, and what a ride it has been. To go with the games, runs, wickets and catches, I have played alongside some of my heroes and many greats of the game.”

Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s Director of Cricket, praised Croft’s contributions to the club. “Steven epitomises everything good about this club. He is an outstanding individual who always puts the team first and anyone who has watched him knows that Steven puts his heart and soul into every game and his record speaks for itself.”

“To be such an influential member of our side – as well as contributing to so many match-winning performances – over such a long period of time is something he should be very proud of.”

“Players like Steven don’t come around too often and whilst we will miss his skill and experience on the field, we’re thrilled that he will continue to play a vital role in continuing to develop the exciting young players we have at Emirates Old Trafford, working across the Men’s First Team, Second XI and Academy.”
