In the 2023 IPL season, Chawla himself showcased his prowess on the field, securing 22 wickets across 16 matches, making him the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Chawla shared an anecdote from the season, revealing an instance when Rohit summoned him to his room at the unusual hour of 2:30 AM. “I’ve played so much cricket with him that we’ve reached a comfort level. We sit off-the-field as well. Once, at 2:30 in the night, he texted me and asked, ‘you up?’ He drew a field on paper and discussed with me about potentially dismissing Warner. Even at that time, he was thinking about how he could get the best out of me,” Chawla told Shubhankar Mishra on YouTube.

Chawla stressed that Rohit’s influence extends beyond his role as a captain, highlighting his leadership qualities. He referred to instances from the ODI World Cup held last year and the recent T20 World Cup to support his point. “There’s a captain, then there’s a leader. He isn’t a captain, he is a leader. Whether it was 2023 ODI WC, or the 2024 T20 WC, the way he batted, he sets the tone in such a way that he made it easy for next batters. He’s a true leader. He gives you a free hand,” said Chawla.

Rohit-led Indian team ended the decade-long ICC title drought after beating South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 to lift their second title in the format. In 2023, the Men in Blue failed to win the World Test Championship and 2023 ODI World Cup under Rohit’s leadership after losing to Australia in the finals.

Amidst the grueling desert heat, with temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F), Sachin Tendulkar delivered a performance that would cement his status as a cricketing legend.

On April 22, 1998, in the first of two crucial matches against Australia, Tendulkar emerged as India’s beacon of hope. Chasing a formidable target of 285 runs, he unleashed a batting masterclass. His innings of 143 not out off 131 balls was a symphony of elegance and aggression.

Tendulkar’s innings was not merely a display of technical brilliance but also a testament to his mental fortitude. Despite being relentlessly challenged by the Australian bowlers, he exhibited remarkable resilience. His shots were a mesmerizing blend of crisp drives, delicate glides, and powerful pulls, leaving spectators and opponents alike in awe.

As Tendulkar’s innings progressed, a dust storm, which would later become part of cricketing folklore, disrupted India’s efforts for around 25 minutes. The target was revised to 276 in 46 overs. Undeterred, Tendulkar continued his onslaught, guiding India to the brink of victory.

At that time, if the chief selector had made a wrong selection, he should have been removed, but they didn’t have the courage, and as a result, they demoralized a young player,” Moin told Cricket Pakistan.

Moin also expressed his disapproval regarding the choice to drop Azam from the squad after a single game. The promising wicketkeeper-batsman failed to score in the match against USA, which resulted in Pakistan’s unexpected loss.

“I watched the entire World Cup and the matches leading up to it, and it seemed like Azam was the number one choice for wicketkeeping and batting. Then suddenly, after just one match, the entire strategy was changed. Azam wasn’t given a chance to keep wickets after one match and was dropped after getting out on the very first ball,” he said.

However, Moin emphasized that Azam needs to become “physically and mentally” stronger to maintain his performance at the highest level.

“I’m not saying that all the blame lies with the team management and the captain; Azam has his own shortcomings too. He needs to make himself physically and mentally stronger, follow the fitness routines of other sportsmen. For the past month or so, I’ve noticed he’s been working hard to improve his fitness with his trainer Shehzar Mohammad, even taking him along to the Caribbean League,” said Moin.

SACA Supports Women’s Cricket Amid Afghanistan Series Concerns

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) has expressed its support for promoting women’s cricket while acknowledging the upcoming ODI series between South Africa and Afghanistan in the UAE. Afghanistan remains the only ICC Full Member without a women’s team due to severe restrictions imposed on women under the Taliban government.

This bilateral series marks the first between the two nations and only the third time South Africa will play 50-over cricket against Afghanistan after facing them at the 2019 and 2023 World Cups. These fixtures are not part of the 2023-2027 Future Tours Programme (FTP) but have been added to provide more competitive opportunities for South Africa’s teams.

SACA welcomed these additions but expressed concern over the “deteriorating human rights for women under the Taliban rule.” The association reiterated its support for promoting women’s cricket globally.

“World Cricketers’ Association and SACA do not condone any situation in which women’s players are excluded from competing in our sport,” said Andrew Breetzke, SACA CEO and WCA board member. “Every athlete has the right to equality of opportunity, protected by international law and the Universal Declaration of Player Rights.”

SACA urged CSA to use its leverage during the series to highlight the importance of protecting and respecting the rights of Afghanistan’s women’s players.

CSA is expected to remain silent on the statement but has participated in discussions regarding Afghanistan’s situation as an ICC Member. The ICC continues to explore solutions, including the possibility of a refugee team based in Australia.

The ICC is hesitant to ban Afghanistan’s men’s team, as it did with South Africa in 1970 due to racial Apartheid. The ACB cannot recognize a women’s team due to the Taliban’s stance on women. Concerns exist that forcing the issue could endanger lives.

Despite Afghanistan’s Full Member status, some countries have refused to play against them bilaterally. Australia has postponed two series against Afghanistan due to government concerns. South Africa has only faced Afghanistan in major events, including the recent T20 World Cup semi-final.

South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter, declined to comment on whether the team considered not playing against Afghanistan, deferring to Cricket South Africa.

South Africa will play three ODIs against Afghanistan in Sharjah from next Wednesday, followed by two T20Is and three ODIs against Ireland in Abu Dhabi.
