Gavaskar Slams Comments on Root Surpassing Tendulkar, Calls for Aggressive Response

Gavaskar Slams Comments on Root Surpassing Tendulkar, Calls for Aggressive Response

Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has strongly criticized recent comments suggesting that England’s Joe Root could surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the leading run-scorer in men’s Test cricket. Gavaskar argues that such remarks are disrespectful and that the Indian cricket community should respond with aggression.

Gavaskar points out that it is common for crowds to be silent when their team is not performing well, regardless of nationality. He suggests that the criticism of Indian crowds is unfair and that it should be countered with a more assertive approach.

The former England captain Michael Vaughan had previously stated that Root could become the top run-getter in Tests and that the BCCI would use its influence to ensure that an Indian batter retained the record. Gavaskar dismisses this claim, stating that the BCCI is committed to promoting Test cricket and that the IPL’s success does not diminish its interest in the longer format.

Gavaskar also questions the logic behind the suggestion that Test cricket would be better if Root broke Tendulkar’s record. He argues that Tendulkar’s achievements are a testament to the greatness of Indian cricket and that it is not necessary for an Englishman to hold the record for the sport to thrive.

Finally, Gavaskar expresses skepticism about the ICC’s decision to host the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in 2025. He notes that the venue has been changed twice before when England was not likely to qualify for the final. Gavaskar suggests that the ICC may be biased towards England and that the final should be held at a neutral venue.

Ricky Ponting Eyes IPL Return with Kolkata Knight Riders

Ricky Ponting Eyes IPL Return with Kolkata Knight Riders

Ricky Ponting, the legendary Australian cricketer and coach, is currently a free agent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after parting ways with Delhi Capitals (DC) in July 2023. Ponting, a two-time World Cup-winning captain, joined DC in 2018 and guided the team to its maiden IPL final in 2021. However, the team’s performance in subsequent seasons fell short of expectations.

Despite his lackluster coaching record in the IPL, Ponting remains a highly sought-after figure in the league. As the IPL 2025 mega auction approaches, rumors are swirling that Ponting could join defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In a recent interview, Ponting expressed his interest in continuing his IPL journey, albeit with a different franchise.

“There might be a few opportunities coming up in IPL in the next few weeks, and we’ll see what happens,” Ponting told Sky Sports.

KKR is reportedly considering Ponting or Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara as a replacement for former mentor Gautam Gambhir, who was recently appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Meanwhile, Ponting remains eager to take up coaching opportunities in the IPL. He acknowledged that the lack of silverware during his tenure at DC led to his departure but expressed his desire to return to the league.

“I’d love to coach again in the IPL. I’ve had a great time every year that I’ve been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there,” Ponting said on The ICC Review podcast.

“I’ve had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn’t really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted.”

“Me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn’t happen,” he conceded.

With his wealth of experience and knowledge, Ricky Ponting remains a valuable asset to any IPL franchise. His potential move to KKR would be a significant development in the league and could bolster the team’s chances of retaining its title.

India Announce Test Squad for Bangladesh Series, Pant Returns, Jurel Earns Maiden Call-Up

India Announce Test Squad for Bangladesh Series, Pant Returns, Jurel Earns Maiden Call-Up

India’s Test squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh has been announced, featuring the return of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and the maiden call-up for young pacer Yash Dayal.

Pant, who suffered a horrific car accident in December 2022, will make his Test comeback in the series opener in Chennai on September 19. His inclusion is a significant boost for India, as he is one of the team’s most explosive and dynamic players.

Another notable addition to the squad is 23-year-old Dhruv Jurel, who impressed on his Test debut against England in January. Jurel scored 190 runs in three matches, including a knock of 90, and has been rewarded with a place in the squad for the Bangladesh series.

With Pant and KL Rahul also in the squad, Jurel will be the third wicketkeeper option for India. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta believes that India could potentially field all three wicketkeepers in their XI.

“Your XI, Yashasvi and Rohit to open. Shubman at No. 3, Virat Kohli at No. 4. KL Rahul at No. 5. Rishabh Pant at No. 6. Then maybe you can play another batter. 8 and 9 you have Jadeja and Ashwin. And then No. 10 and No. 11, you have two seamers,” Dasgupta told India Today.

“You can think of someone like Sarfaraz for the middle-order. Even for that matter… Dhruv Jurel batted beautifully. Yeah, I won’t be surprised if Rishabh, Dhruv and KL all three of them play. The other thing you have to keep in mind is the Australia series. You can also look at other options, but the way Dhruv batted, his technique and composure, I think he is more adept to batting in Australia than some of the other newcomers,” he added.

India will be looking to start their Test series against Bangladesh on a positive note, as they prepare for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in November.

Rohit Sharma Breaks Tendulkar's ODI Record, Reaches 10,000 Runs in 241 Innings

Rohit Sharma Breaks Tendulkar’s ODI Record, Reaches 10,000 Runs in 241 Innings

On September 14, 2023, Rohit Sharma etched his name into the annals of cricket history by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the fastest player to reach 10,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The Indian captain achieved this remarkable feat in just 241 innings, 18 fewer than the legendary Tendulkar.

Sharma’s record-breaking moment came during an Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The “Hitman” reached the milestone in style, smashing a towering six off the bowling of Kasun Rajitha. The crowd erupted in thunderous applause as Sharma celebrated his historic achievement.

Despite Sharma’s impressive 48-ball 53, India was bowled out for a modest 213 in 49.1 overs. However, the Indian bowlers, led by Kuldeep Yadav, put in a spirited performance to secure a 41-run victory. Yadav claimed four wickets for 43 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with two wickets each.

Sharma’s journey to 10,000 ODI runs has been marked by his exceptional batting prowess. Known for his aggressive style and ability to hit big shots, Sharma has scored three double centuries in ODIs, including a career-best 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014.

In the match against Sri Lanka, Sharma’s opening partnership with Shubman Gill (19 off 25 balls) gave India a solid start. However, the Sri Lankan spinners, Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka, tightened their grip on the game, taking five and four wickets respectively.

Despite the setback, India’s bowlers rallied on the spin-friendly Colombo pitch. Yadav’s four-wicket haul proved decisive, while Jadeja and Bumrah also made valuable contributions. Ultimately, India dismissed Sri Lanka for 172, securing a crucial win by 41 runs.

Sharma’s record-breaking achievement is a testament to his exceptional talent and unwavering determination. He has established himself as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of cricketers to come.

Ricky Ponting Praises Indian Batters' Overseas Adaptability Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Ricky Ponting Praises Indian Batters’ Overseas Adaptability Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Ahead of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series between India and Australia, former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has heaped praise on the Indian batters, highlighting their remarkable adaptability to overseas batting conditions.

Ponting acknowledged that the Indian batsmen are no longer intimidated by the challenging pitches of the Gabba or the Optus Oval, as they were in the past. He attributed this shift to a combination of factors, including a strong selection process and a fearless approach to batting on the big stage.

“They won a game at the Gabba, which just doesn’t happen,” Ponting said. “I think their batsmen adapt to overseas batting conditions very well. I don’t think they’re as daunted by the Gabba or the Optus Oval, as they maybe once were.”

Ponting also credited the Indian Premier League (IPL) for playing a significant role in the development of Indian batsmen. He described the IPL as a “World Cup” for Indian players, where they gain invaluable experience in high-pressure situations.

“For the last 10 years being around the IPL, I’ve noticed that a lot of the young guys [don’t fear the big stage anymore] as the IPL is high-pressure, it is like a World Cup for them,” Ponting said. “Their batsmen are all very aggressive stroke-making players. They are not scared of failing.”

In addition to the batting prowess, Ponting also praised the Indian bowling attack, highlighting their depth and leadership. He believes that the strong leadership of Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid has played a crucial role in the team’s success.

“Their fast-bowling depth is great. The leadership in the last 6-7 years has been strong, going back to Kohli’s start of captaincy, played a big role in turning the cricket around and Dravid has continued the same in the recent four years,” Ponting said.

The BGT series, which begins on November 22, will be a highly competitive affair, with both teams eager to prove their dominance. India has won the last four series against Australia, including two victories in Australia, while Australia’s last series win in India came in 2004-05.

Riyan Parag’s Effortless Six Lights Up Duleep Trophy

Riyan Parag, the young and talented all-rounder from Assam, has once again showcased his exceptional batting skills with an effortless six over long-off in the ongoing Duleep Trophy match between India A and India D. The shot, which has been widely shared on social media, has left fans and experts in awe of Parag’s ability to hit the ball with power and precision.

Parag, who is representing India A in the tournament, played a crucial cameo of 39 runs off just 27 deliveries in the first innings. His innings was characterized by aggressive strokeplay, with the six over long-off being the highlight. The shot came off the bowling of Arshdeep Singh, who is known for his pace and accuracy.

Parag’s six has garnered widespread attention on social media, with fans and his IPL team, Rajasthan Royals, expressing their admiration for the shot. The official Twitter handle of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared the video of the six, captioning it as “That shot by Riyan Parag! It was the first 6 of India A’s innings.”

Rajasthan Royals, who have witnessed Parag’s big-hitting prowess firsthand in the IPL, also shared the video on their Twitter handle, praising the young batsman’s skills. “Riyan Parag, you beauty!” the caption read.

Parag’s performance in the Duleep Trophy comes after he missed out on a maiden Test call-up for the series against Bangladesh. However, his impressive form in the domestic tournament could put him back in contention for a place in the national team.

Parag made his white-ball debut for India earlier this year in July, playing in a T20I on the tour of Zimbabwe. He has since played six T20Is and one ODI for India, impressing the selectors with his aggressive batting style and ability to hit the ball cleanly.

Parag’s six in the Duleep Trophy is a testament to his talent and potential. The young batsman has shown that he has the ability to play at the highest level, and he will be one to watch in the years to come.

CSA Reports Record Profits of R815 Million, Women's Cricket Benefits

CSA Reports Record Profits of R815 Million, Women’s Cricket Benefits

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced a remarkable financial turnaround, posting profits of R815 million (US$ 45.6 million) for the 2023-24 fiscal year. This significant achievement marks a departure from the losses incurred over the past three reporting periods, totaling R538 million (US$ 30.14 million).

The turnaround is primarily attributed to increased revenue from broadcast rights, which now account for 54% of CSA’s income. The successful hosting of the 2024 Under-19 men’s World Cup and a bumper SA20 tournament, in which CSA holds a majority stake, further contributed to the financial boost.

CSA’s total ICC disbursements for the period amounted to R566 million (US$ 31.63 million), a significant increase from the previous year’s R290 million (US$ 16.2 million). The organization anticipates another strong financial year in 2024-2025, largely due to hosting India for four T20Is in November, with revenue projections exceeding R150 million (US$ 8.38 million) per match.

The financial turnaround has had a positive impact on the women’s game in South Africa, with CSA investing R32 million (US$ 1.78 million) in professionalizing domestic women’s cricket. The cost of running professional cricket remains CSA’s largest expense, with R633 million (US$ 35.3 million) allocated to domestic men’s and women’s teams.

Despite the financial challenges, CSA reported strong performance across all levels of cricket. The men’s team reached the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup, while the women’s team achieved historic victories against Australia. Grassroots cricket also saw a surge in participation, with the KFC mini-cricket program reporting a 20% increase.

The CSA AGM marked the end of Lawson Naidoo’s three-year tenure as chair. A new chair will be elected at a special general meeting this month, with the selection process limited to independent directors.

Bangladesh Pacer Shoriful Islam Ruled Out of India Test Series Due to Groin Injury

Bangladesh’s hopes of continuing their Test success in India have been dealt a blow with the news that pacer Shoriful Islam will miss the two-match series due to a groin injury.

Shoriful, 23, played a key role in Bangladesh’s historic Test series win in Pakistan, taking three wickets in the first Test in Rawalpindi. However, he sustained the injury during the match and was unable to feature in the second Test.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed Shoriful’s absence in a statement on Thursday, saying that he is still recovering from the injury and is unavailable for the series.

The injury is a significant setback for Bangladesh, who are looking to build on their momentum after defeating Pakistan. The team will now have to rely on their other pacers, including Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, and Syed Khaled Ahmed, to provide the necessary firepower.

Despite the absence of Shoriful, Bangladesh will still be confident of putting up a strong fight against India. The team has a number of experienced players, including Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Litton Das, who have all performed well in Test cricket.

India, on the other hand, will be looking to maintain their dominance in Test cricket. The team is currently ranked seventh in the ICC Test rankings, seven places ahead of Bangladesh. India is also leading the World Test Championship standings.

The first Test between India and Bangladesh will begin on September 19 in Chennai, while the second match will start on September 27 in Kanpur.

Ishan Kishan's Surprise Duleep Trophy Inclusion Sparks Confusion

Ishan Kishan’s Surprise Duleep Trophy Inclusion Sparks Confusion

Ishan Kishan’s Surprise Inclusion in Duleep Trophy Raises Questions

In a surprising turn of events, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has made an unexpected appearance in the playing XI of the India C team in the second round of the Duleep Trophy. This development has raised eyebrows, as Kishan was previously ruled out of the tournament due to a groin injury.

The confusion began when Kishan, a regular in India’s cricket squad until last year, was initially ruled out of the Duleep Trophy’s first round. The BCCI had announced his injury, sustained during the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament, with Sanju Samson named as his replacement in the India D squad.

When the second round squad lists were released, Kishan was not mentioned, and there were no updates about his recovery. However, on September 12, Kishan appeared in the playing XI for India C against India B, causing speculation and confusion among fans and cricket analysts. The second-round announcement had stated no changes in the India C team, adding to the surprise.

The uncertainty over how Kishan, initially ruled out with an injury, suddenly joined the India C lineup has escalated without an official statement from the BCCI. Previously, Kishan had stepped away from cricket due to mental health issues, causing him to be dropped from the Indian squads and lose his central contract. His recent century in the Buchi Babu Invitational was seen as a positive sign of his return.

With Kishan’s unexpected inclusion in the Duleep Trophy, fans await clarification from the BCCI. The situation has led to further speculation about his future in Indian cricket. Some believe that his inclusion indicates a return to form and a potential recall to the national team, while others question the timing and circumstances of his recovery.

The BCCI’s silence on the matter has only added to the intrigue surrounding Kishan’s inclusion. It remains to be seen whether the board will provide an official explanation or whether Kishan’s return will remain shrouded in mystery.

Hazlewood's Cunning Deception Foxes Livingstone in T20I

Hazlewood’s Cunning Deception Foxes Livingstone in T20I

Bowlers’ Trickery: Josh Hazlewood’s Cunning Deception to Dismiss Liam Livingstone

In the ever-evolving landscape of cricket, where batsmen continuously innovate with audacious shots, bowlers must also adapt and devise new strategies to outwit their opponents. One such instance of bowling brilliance was witnessed in the first T20I between England and Australia at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood showcased his cunning deception to dismiss England’s Liam Livingstone. Bowling the 14th over, Hazlewood initially displayed the grip and hand position of an off-cutter, leading Livingstone to anticipate a slower delivery. However, in a swift move, Hazlewood switched his grip and unleashed a full-paced delivery.

The ball crashed into the hard length outside off stump, catching Livingstone off guard. The batsman’s lack of footwork and attempt to stab at the ball resulted in an inside edge that crashed into his stumps. Despite the absence of significant movement, Hazlewood’s clever deception proved decisive.

Bowlers employ various tactics to disrupt batsmen’s rhythm and force errors. Some slow down their deliveries or accelerate them unexpectedly to unsettle the batsman’s timing. Others rely on swing and seam to make the ball move unpredictably.

These strategies demand a combination of skill, guile, and an understanding of the batsman’s mindset. Hazlewood’s dismissal of Livingstone exemplified all these qualities, demonstrating the importance of bowling variations and outsmarting the opposition.
