The Afro-Asia Cup, a series of charity matches between Asian XI and African XI, is set to make a comeback after a decade-long hiatus. The tournament, first played in 2005 and again in 2007, featured legendary players from both continents, including Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Zaheer Khan, Shoaib Akhtar, Anil Kumble, Shahid Afridi, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis, and Tatenda Taibu.

According to a report in Forbes, the Afro-Asia Cup is being revived due to renewed interest from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the African Cricket Association (ACA). Former ACA chair Sumod Damodar expressed his disappointment over the tournament’s previous cancellation and emphasized the need for Africa to push for its revival.

The return of the Afro-Asia Cup could pave the way for unprecedented collaborations between players from India and Pakistan, who have not played a bilateral series since 2012-13. The tournament could also help bridge political barriers between the two nations, as cricket has the power to unite people.

In 2022, a proposal to restart the tournament was discussed between ACC chair Jay Shah, then ACA chair Sumod Damodar, and ACC head of development Mahinda Vallipuram. With Vallipuram’s recent re-election to the ICC board, there is renewed optimism that the Afro-Asia Cup will be revived.

The tournament’s return would not only provide a platform for exciting cricket but also promote unity and understanding between Asia and Africa. It would be a testament to the power of sports to transcend boundaries and bring people together.

England’s Joe Root remains the world’s top-ranked Test batter despite modest scores at The Oval. However, his rating has dropped, allowing New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, and Australia’s Steve Smith to close the gap. Harry Brook fell seven places to 12th after disappointing performances.

On the positive side for England, Ollie Pope gained seven places to equal 27th after a century in the first innings, and Jamie Smith jumped six spots to equal 30th after a quickfire half-century in the second innings.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers also made significant gains on the Test bowler rankings. Vishwa Fernando rose 13 places to equal 31st after taking five wickets, while Lahiru Kumara (up 10 places to 32nd) and Milan Rathnayake (up 26 places to equal 84th) also improved. England’s Olly Stone gained 13 places to 74th after his three wickets in the first innings.

In the T20I rankings, Australia’s Mitch Marsh and Josh Inglis climbed the ladder for batters after their series sweep over Scotland. Spinner Adam Zampa moved up one place to seventh on the T20I bowler rankings. Scotland’s Bradley Currie made a significant jump of 20 places to 49th on the same list.

Tourism emerged as the primary beneficiary, with an estimated USD 861.4 million in revenue generated through accommodation, travel, transportation, and food and beverage. The influx of domestic and foreign tourists attending the matches contributed significantly to this economic boost.

Secondary and incremental spending within the economy also played a crucial role, generating USD 515.7 million, approximately 37% of the total impact. The report highlights that nearly 75% of spectators were attending an ICC 50-over match for the first time, indicating the event’s ability to attract new fans.

International travelers made a significant contribution to the economic impact, with nearly 55% having previously visited India regularly. However, the World Cup also attracted a substantial number of first-time visitors, with 19% of international attendees making their maiden trip to the country.

These international travelers visited multiple tourist destinations during their stay, generating an economic impact of USD 281.2 million. The report also notes that nearly 68% of international attendees expressed their intention to recommend India as a tourist destination to friends and family, further enhancing the country’s global image.

The event also created over 48,000 full and part-time jobs, both directly through tournament delivery and indirectly through the hospitality sector. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice emphasized the event’s positive impact on the Indian economy, stating that it “demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket.”

Chopra also discussed the future of Suryakumar Yadav, who has also been linked with a move away from MI. However, Chopra believes Surya is unlikely to leave the franchise at this stage of his career. “I don’t think Suryakumar Yadav will be traded. The Mumbai Indians won’t leave Suryakumar Yadav and I feel Surya also won’t leave either,” he said.

Rohit Sharma’s departure would mark a significant change for MI, who have been led by the Indian opener since 2013. Under his captaincy, MI won five IPL titles, making them the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history.

If Root continues to perform at his current level, he could potentially challenge Tendulkar’s record in the coming years. However, Root remains humble about his chances of surpassing the Indian legend.

“It’s a long way away,” Root said. “I’m just trying to focus on the next game and the next series. I’m not looking too far ahead.”
