Durand Cup Semifinal: Kolkata Police Bans Tifo, Drums, and Inflammable Materials

Amidst heightened security concerns following the RG Kar Medical College protests, the Kolkata Police has issued a notice prohibiting spectators from bringing tifo, drums, smoke candles, or other inflammable materials into the stadium for the Durand Cup semifinal between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru FC on Tuesday.

The notice, signed by the joint commissioner of police, Bidhannagar, states that these restrictions are necessary to ensure the safety and security of the event. The authorities have requested both teams and their fans to cooperate with the security agencies and adhere to the guidelines.

The decision to ban these items comes after the city police and tournament organizers canceled the derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal due to security concerns. In a show of solidarity, supporters of both teams gathered near the Salt Lake Stadium to protest the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

As the Durand Cup enters its final stages, Bengaluru FC faces a formidable challenge against defending champions Mohun Bagan. The Kolkata giants have scored 10 goals and conceded only three, showcasing their attacking prowess and defensive resilience.

Bengaluru FC, on the other hand, will be looking to upset the odds and secure a place in the final. The Blues have been in impressive form this season, winning the Indian Super League and reaching the AFC Cup semifinals.

The semifinal clash promises to be an exciting encounter between two of India’s top football clubs. However, the absence of tifo, drums, and other fan paraphernalia may dampen the atmosphere at the stadium. The Kolkata Police’s decision is aimed at prioritizing safety and preventing any potential security breaches.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Forca Kochi Team Aims to Ignite Football Passion in Kerala

Renowned actor Prithviraj Sukumaran is enthusiastic about the potential of the newly formed Super League Kerala to inspire young people to pursue football. However, he remains realistic, acknowledging that significant progress takes time.

“We’re not expecting a revolution, but rather the beginning of one,” said Sukumaran, the owner of the Forca Kochi team, during the team’s launch event. “We hope this league will provide opportunities for grassroots players and help them achieve greater heights.”

The Kochi team boasts an impressive roster, including six foreign players: Brazilian Raphael Augusto, Tunisian Said Mohamed Nidhal and Dziri Omran, Ivory Coast’s Nangui Mockey Jean Baptiste, South African Ngubo Siyanda, and Colombian Rodriguez Ayoza Luis Angel. Former Indian goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury also joins the team.

Additionally, the squad features several players from I-League clubs and Kerala’s Santosh Trophy team, such as Nijo Gilbert, Arjun Jayaraj, and Hajmel Sakkeer.

Sukumaran emphasized the importance of developing a strong foundation for football in Kerala. “We need to create a system where young players have access to quality coaching, facilities, and opportunities to compete,” he said.

The Super League Kerala aims to provide a platform for talented players to showcase their skills and aspire to higher levels of competition. By attracting foreign players and partnering with experienced coaches, the league hopes to raise the overall standard of football in the state.

Former Olympic hockey bronze medalist P.R. Sreejesh, who unveiled the Kochi team’s jersey, expressed his support for the initiative. “Football has the power to unite people and inspire young minds,” he said. “I’m confident that the Super League Kerala will play a significant role in promoting the sport in our state.”

Portuguese Coach Mario Lemos to Lead Forca Kochi FC in Super League Kerala

Portuguese Coach Mario Lemos to Lead Forca Kochi FC in Super League Kerala

Mario Lemos, a 38-year-old Portuguese coach, is set to make his Indian debut with Forca Kochi FC in the inaugural Super League Kerala. Lemos has a proven track record in Asian football, having guided Dhaka’s Abahani Limited to stunning victories over former ISL champion Chennaiyin FC and former I-League winner Minerva Punjab. He sensationally led the Bangladesh side to the AFC Cup’s inter-zone semifinals in 2019.

Lemos’s arrival in Kerala is seen as a significant step for the new league, which aims to provide a platform for talented players and coaches in the state. Lemos believes that the Super League Kerala can serve as a stepping stone for him to reach some of India’s top clubs in the I-League and Indian Super League.

“I did a good job back in Bangladesh. Now, I think this is a stepping stone to show my work…I’ll do it,” said Lemos in an interview.

Lemos’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Forca Kochi FC, which is still awaiting the arrival of two foreign players and five Indians. However, Lemos remains optimistic about the team’s chances in the league.

“I would say we have 70% of the team. The (Kerala) Police players are yet to come, they are the more experienced players…all the young ones have come,” said Lemos.

Lemos is confident that he can prepare the team for the first match of the league against Malappuram FC on September 7.

“I have to find solutions, I have to adapt. I think everybody is going to have some problem, it’s a new league, it’s normal. To be honest, I’ve been in worse situations…sometimes, I’ve had lesser time. Two weeks give me some time to work, I think I have a good idea what I want to do. In two weeks I can really push them for the first match,” said Lemos.

Lemos’s experience and determination will be crucial for Forca Kochi FC’s success in the Super League Kerala. The league is expected to be highly competitive, with several other teams also aiming to make a mark. However, Lemos is confident that his team has the potential to challenge for the title.

Sven-Goran Eriksson, Former England Manager, Dies at 76

Sven-Goran Eriksson, Former England Manager, Dies at 76

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the Swedish football manager who made history as the first foreigner to lead the England national team, passed away on Monday at the age of 76. Eriksson’s illustrious career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.

Born in Torsby, Sweden, Eriksson began his coaching career in 1977 with Degerfors IF. His early success with the club earned him a move to IFK Gothenburg in 1982, where he guided the team to three consecutive Swedish league titles and the 1982 UEFA Cup.

Eriksson’s reputation as a top-class manager grew with his move to Benfica in 1989. He led the Portuguese giants to two Primeira Liga titles and the 1991 European Cup, becoming the first Swedish coach to win a major European trophy.

In 1997, Eriksson took over at Lazio, where he enjoyed his most successful period as a manager. He won the Serie A title in 1999-2000, the Coppa Italia in 1998 and 2000, and the UEFA Super Cup in 1999.

Eriksson’s achievements at club level earned him the England job in 2001. He inherited a golden generation of players, including David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, and Steven Gerrard. Under Eriksson’s guidance, England reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, as well as the 2004 European Championship.

Despite his success with England, Eriksson’s tenure was not without controversy. His decision to leave the team after the 2006 World Cup to join Manchester City was met with criticism. He later managed Manchester City, Leicester City, and Shanghai SIPG, but never replicated the success he had achieved earlier in his career.

Eriksson’s legacy as a manager is undeniable. He was a charismatic and innovative coach who helped revolutionize the game. His ability to get the best out of his players and his tactical acumen made him one of the most respected managers of his generation.

Premier League Weekend 2: Haaland Hat-Trick, Chelsea Rampage, United’s First Defeat

The English Premier League’s second weekend delivered another round of captivating matches, showcasing the league’s relentless intensity and unpredictability.

Manchester City, the reigning champions, maintained their dominance with a resounding 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town. Erling Haaland, the Norwegian sensation, stole the show with a hat-trick, demonstrating his exceptional goal-scoring prowess. Kevin de Bruyne also contributed to the triumph with a stunning goal.

In contrast, Manchester United endured their first setback of the season, succumbing to a 1-2 defeat against Brighton. Erik ten Hag’s side struggled to find their rhythm and conceded a late goal in injury time, leaving them with much to ponder.

Chelsea, on the other hand, bounced back from their opening-day loss to Manchester City with a resounding 6-2 victory over Wolves. Noni Madueke emerged as the star of the show, netting a hat-trick, while Cole Palmer showcased his creative brilliance. Joao Felix also marked his return to Chelsea with a goal, adding to the Blues’ impressive performance.

Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur all secured crucial wins. Heung-min Son inspired Spurs to a 4-0 triumph over Everton, while Arsenal overcame Aston Villa 2-0. Liverpool continued their impressive start under Arne Slot with a 2-0 victory over Brentford, showcasing their exceptional passing accuracy.

Other notable results included Bournemouth’s controversial 1-1 draw with Newcastle, West Ham United’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, and Fulham’s 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Napoli Triumphs, Roma Stumbles in Serie A

Napoli Triumphs, Roma Stumbles in Serie A

Napoli secured their first victory under Antonio Conte with a convincing 3-0 triumph over Bologna, while Roma suffered a shocking 2-1 home defeat to Empoli.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who recently became a father, played a pivotal role in Napoli’s victory. The Georgian star scored the second goal with 15 minutes remaining, ensuring the three points for his team. However, his most impressive moment came in stoppage time of the first half when he delivered a delightful pass over the Bologna defense to Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who opened the scoring.

Di Lorenzo, who faced criticism after his performances at Euro 2024, redeemed himself with his goal. Substitute Giovanni Simeone added to Napoli’s tally in added time, converting a low cross from David Neres.

In contrast, Roma’s struggles continued as they lost to Empoli at home for the first time in their history. Emmanuel Gyasi and Lorenzo Colombo scored for Empoli, while Eldor Shomurodov’s late goal proved to be a mere consolation for Roma.

Paulo Dybala, who recently saw his move to Al Qadsiah collapse, was unable to inspire Roma to victory. The team was booed off the pitch for their lackluster performance, which saw them fall two goals behind against a relegation-threatened side.

Meanwhile, Che Adams emulated Denis Law by scoring the decisive goal in Torino’s 2-1 win over Atalanta. The Scottish striker netted his first goal for Torino since joining as a free agent last month, tapping home the hosts’ second four minutes after half-time.

Adams’ goal and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s penalty save in stoppage time secured Torino’s second victory in two matches. The win came after thousands of fans protested outside the stadium, demanding the sale of the club’s owner.

Fiorentina were held to a goalless draw by Venezia in the day’s other early kick-off.

Juventus Signs Argentine Winger Nicolas Gonzalez in €38 Million Deal

Juventus Signs Argentine Winger Nicolas Gonzalez in €38 Million Deal

Juventus has made a significant addition to their squad with the signing of Argentine winger Nicolas Gonzalez from Fiorentina. The deal, worth a potential 38 million euros ($42.5 million), is part of the Turin giants’ ongoing revamp under new coach Thiago Motta.

Gonzalez joins Juventus on a season-long loan for eight million euros, with an obligation to buy for 25 million euros plus bonuses of five million euros. The bonuses are contingent upon the achievement of certain sporting objectives, which Juventus believes are highly likely to be met.

The 26-year-old has been a key player for Fiorentina over the past three years, helping them reach the final of the Europa Conference League twice and the Italian Cup once. He has also earned 39 caps for Argentina, scoring five goals and playing a role in their recent Copa America and Finalissima triumphs.

Gonzalez is expected to make his Juventus debut next weekend against Roma. By then, the club is also likely to have completed the signing of Francisco Conceicao from Porto on a one-season loan.

Juventus has been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Douglas Luiz and Khepren Thuram. They are also pursuing Atalanta’s star midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

The addition of Gonzalez, a versatile and experienced winger, will provide Juventus with much-needed depth and quality in attack. He is expected to play a key role in Motta’s plans as the club looks to challenge for major honors this season.

Liverpool Triumph Under Slot's Debut at Anfield

Liverpool Triumph Under Slot’s Debut at Anfield

Arne Slot’s Liverpool debut at Anfield was a resounding success, with the Reds securing a 2-0 victory over Brentford. The win propelled Liverpool to the top of the Premier League standings, alongside Manchester City, Arsenal, and Brighton, as the only teams with maximum points after two games.

Slot’s tactical approach, expected to be more possession-oriented than Jurgen Klopp’s, was evident in flashes during the first half. However, Liverpool’s opening goal was a classic Klopp-style counterattack. Diogo Jota’s perfectly timed pass found Luis Diaz, who raced through on goal and fired into the top corner.

Brentford, despite missing Ivan Toney, posed a threat in the second half. Nathan Collins’ header forced a brilliant save from Alisson Becker, while Vitaly Janelt and Mark Flekken also made crucial interventions to deny Liverpool.

However, the Reds’ attacking prowess proved too much for Brentford. Mohamed Salah, assisted by Diaz, timed his run perfectly to remain onside and dink the ball over Flekken, sealing the victory.

Slot praised his team’s performance, acknowledging that they still have much to prove against top-six opposition. He also noted that Brentford’s energy levels waned in the second half, allowing Liverpool to exploit the gaps.

The crowd serenaded Slot with chants of his name, a testament to the positive early impression he has made. Despite concerns about the lack of new signings, Liverpool appear well-positioned to challenge Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Real Madrid Earn First La Liga Win with 3-0 Victory over Valladolid

Real Madrid’s La Liga campaign got off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. Kylian Mbappe made his home debut for the Spanish champions but failed to find the net.

Madrid struggled to create chances in the first half, but they broke the deadlock after the break through Fede Valverde’s deflected free-kick. Substitute Brahim Diaz doubled the lead with a lobbed finish in the 88th minute, and debutant Endrick added a third in stoppage time.

Mbappe, who joined Madrid on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, had a quiet game. He had a few chances to score, but he was denied by Valladolid goalkeeper Karl Hein.

Despite Mbappe’s lack of goals, Madrid were comfortable winners. They dominated possession and created several chances. They will be hoping that Mbappe can find his scoring boots soon, but for now, they will be happy with the three points.

Valladolid, meanwhile, were unlucky not to get something from the game. They defended well for long periods, but they were eventually undone by Madrid’s quality. They will be hoping to bounce back when they host Real Betis next weekend.

Kane Inspires Bayern Munich to Comeback Win in Kompany's Debut

Kane Inspires Bayern Munich to Comeback Win in Kompany’s Debut

Harry Kane’s heroics propelled Bayern Munich to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Wolfsburg in Vincent Kompany’s Bundesliga debut as manager.

Bayern took an early lead through Jamal Musiala, but Wolfsburg stunned the visitors with two goals from Lovro Majer in the second half. The Croatian midfielder capitalized on defensive errors to put Wolfsburg in front.

However, Kane’s presence proved pivotal for Bayern. His header forced an own goal from Wolfsburg’s Jakub Kaminski, leveling the score. The England captain then set up Serge Gnabry for the winning goal in the 82nd minute.

Despite the victory, Bayern’s performance was far from perfect. “We got punished a little in the second half,” Kane admitted. “We’re still implementing the coach’s ideas.”

Joshua Kimmich echoed Kane’s sentiments, acknowledging that Bayern “lost control of the game due to many mistakes.” However, he praised the team’s resilience in coming back from behind.

Wolfsburg’s resurgence in the second half was impressive, but they were unable to hold on to their lead. The defeat extended their winless streak against Bayern to 21 matches.

In other Bundesliga action, promoted St Pauli hosted Heidenheim in the final match of the round.
