Gani Ahammed Nigam: From Subroto Cup Near-Miss to ISL Aspirations

Gani Ahammed Nigam: From Subroto Cup Near-Miss to ISL Aspirations

Ten years ago, Gani Ahammed Nigam and Malappuram’s MSP HSS came tantalizingly close to pulling off a major upset in the Subroto Cup international junior football tournament. With Gani scoring a goal late in the first half, MSP led 2-0 and nearly shocked Brazil’s Colegio Estadul Santo Antonio (St. Antony’s School) in the under-17 final. However, the Brazilian side managed to snatch victory with a last-gasp goal that leveled the score 2-2 and forced the match into a tie-breaker.

“The Subroto Cup final was a pivotal moment in my life,” said Gani, the Calicut FC forward, in a recent interview. “I scored seven goals in that tournament, and it made me realize that I wanted to pursue football as a career.”

Now 26 years old, Gani is eager for more such turning points in his life. With three goals in as many matches in the ongoing Super League Kerala (SLK), he is in fine form and believes that continued success here will help him return to the Indian Super League (ISL) soon.

“I feel like I’m getting my goal-scoring touch back,” said Gani, who has played for several ISL teams, primarily as a winger. “If I get a good offer in the ISL’s January transfer window, I will definitely consider it.”

Gani’s football journey began at the age of nine at the Kadathanad Raja FA academy near his home. After five years there, he moved to MSP School, where he honed his skills and developed into a formidable player. Like many players from the Malappuram area, he has also played extensively in sevens football.

“I played my first sevens match with seniors at 17,” explained Gani. “You learn to make quick decisions and improve your decision-making skills because the ground is so small.”

However, Gani expressed concern about the current state of sevens football in the region. “It’s become very rough and violent,” he said. “There’s a lot of kicking, elbowing, and fighting. It’s scary, and you could get injured. I think it’s changed a lot in the last couple of years, but I don’t understand why because fans enjoy good, clean football.”

Despite the challenges, Gani remains optimistic about his future in football. He is determined to continue scoring goals and helping his team achieve success. With his talent and dedication, he is confident that he can reach even greater heights in the years to come.

Age Fraud in Youth Football: Jhingan Calls for Eradication

Age Fraud in Youth Football: Jhingan Calls for Eradication

Age Fraud in Youth Football: A Damaging Practice

Age fraud, the practice of fielding overage players in youth competitions, has been a persistent issue in football, damaging the confidence and development of young players. FC Goa defender Sandesh Jhingan, a victim of this practice, has spoken out against its detrimental effects.

Jhingan recalled his experiences playing against older opponents during his youth, highlighting the significant physical and mental advantages they possessed. “I have many times felt that I was not good enough, because that boy was stronger, faster, and more mature than me,” he said. “At that age, even a difference of two years makes a massive difference.”

The negative impact of age fraud extends beyond individual players. It creates an unfair playing field, discouraging talented youth from pursuing the sport. Jhingan emphasized the need to eradicate this practice, stating, “It needs to stop big time. I am really happy that all the clubs and the Reliance Foundation are coming together to solve this problem.”

The Stay Your Age U-15 football tournament, held in Navi Mumbai, aimed to address the issue of age fraud. Players from six teams underwent rigorous document verification to ensure fair competition. The tournament provided a platform for young players to showcase their skills without the burden of competing against overage opponents.

Jhingan’s advocacy against age fraud highlights the importance of protecting the integrity of youth football. By ensuring that players compete in their appropriate age groups, we can foster a fair and equitable environment that nurtures the development of young talent.

Arsenal Captain Odegaard Out for Extended Period with Ankle Injury

Arsenal Captain Odegaard Out for Extended Period with Ankle Injury

Arsenal’s captain, Martin Odegaard, will be sidelined for an extended period due to an ankle injury sustained while on international duty with Norway. Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the news on Wednesday, stating that Odegaard will be out “for a while.”

The injury occurred during Norway’s Nations League match against Austria earlier this month. Odegaard twisted his ankle, prompting concerns about the severity of the damage. Subsequent scans revealed ligament damage, necessitating a significant recovery period.

Arteta expressed his disappointment at losing Odegaard, who has been a key player for Arsenal since joining the club in 2021. “We’re going to miss him,” Arteta said. “It’s a significant injury, so we’re going to lose him for a while.”

The Arsenal manager declined to provide a specific timeframe for Odegaard’s return, emphasizing that he is not a medical professional. However, he indicated that the injury is not expected to keep Odegaard out for months.

Odegaard’s absence is a blow to Arsenal’s ambitions this season. The Gunners are currently second in the Premier League table, two points behind reigning champions Manchester City. They will face a tough test on Sunday when they visit the Etihad Stadium to take on Pep Guardiola’s side.

In Odegaard’s absence, Arsenal will need to find a suitable replacement in midfield. Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are likely to be the first-choice pairing, but Arteta may also consider using Emile Smith Rowe or Fabio Vieira in a more advanced role.

The injury to Odegaard is a reminder of the physical demands of international football. Players are often called upon to play multiple matches in a short period, which can increase the risk of injuries. Clubs must carefully manage their players’ workloads to minimize the chances of setbacks.

Champions League Goal Drought: 0-0 Draws Dominate Wednesday Night

Champions League Goal Drought: 0-0 Draws Dominate Wednesday Night

The Champions League witnessed an uncharacteristically low-scoring night on Wednesday, with only 13 goals scored across six matches. This stark contrast followed a high-scoring Tuesday, where 28 goals were netted, including Bayern Munich’s impressive nine-goal haul.

The most notable goalless draw was between Manchester City and Inter Milan, a rematch of the 2023 final. This result marked the first time City failed to score at home in the Champions League since 2022. Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Pep Guardiola’s team could not find a breakthrough.

Another 0-0 draw occurred between Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk, adding to the unusual goal drought. Bologna, making their Champions League return after 60 years, played with attacking intent but were denied by Shakhtar’s goalkeeper.

Paris Saint-Germain also struggled to score against Girona, but a late error by goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga gifted them a 1-0 victory. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, needed late goals from substitutes Jamie Gittens and Serhou Guirassy to secure a 3-0 win over Club Brugge.

The new Champions League format has welcomed several new faces, including Sparta Prague, who made a strong debut with a 3-0 victory over Salzburg. Celtic also impressed with a 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava, showcasing their attacking prowess.

Despite the low goal count on Wednesday, the Champions League continues to offer excitement and drama. The upcoming Thursday slate of matches promises more action, with Barcelona facing Monaco, Atalanta hosting Arsenal, and Bayer Leverkusen visiting Feyenoord.

Forca Kochi FC Forces Draw Against Calicut FC in Mahindra Super League Kerala

Forca Kochi FC Forces Draw Against Calicut FC in Mahindra Super League Kerala

Forca Kochi FC staged a remarkable comeback to salvage a 1-1 draw against high-flying Calicut FC in the Mahindra Super League Kerala at the EMS Corporation Stadium on Wednesday night.

Calicut, playing at home in front of a boisterous crowd, began as the favorite after its impressive away victory over Malappuram FC. Despite Kochi’s promising start, Calicut took the lead through its local forward Gani Nigam, who had scored twice against Malappuram, just before halftime.

Kochi’s goal came as a surprise to Calicut. Jijo Joseph skillfully evaded several defenders and sent a precise pass to Nigam. The Calicut forward, despite being closely marked, calmly lifted the ball over Kochi goalkeeper S. Hajmal, who could only watch helplessly as it sailed into the net.

The home side nearly extended its lead early in the second half, but Richard Osei’s dangerous header from a corner was expertly saved by Hajmal.

Kochi emerged from the break with renewed vigor, and within 10 minutes, the Calicut goal came under intense pressure. However, goalkeeper Vishal Joon thwarted three consecutive attempts by the visiting players.

The equalizer finally arrived in the 75th minute when South African Ngubo Siyanda headed in a long cross from the right by Kamalpreet Singh.

The result leaves Calicut with five points from three matches, while winless Kochi has two points.

Bengaluru FC Favored to Extend Winning Streak Against Hyderabad FC in ISL Clash

Bengaluru FC (BFC) will face Hyderabad FC in an Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Thursday, aiming to build on their positive start to the season. BFC secured a 1-0 victory over East Bengal in their opening fixture, with Vinith Venkatesh scoring the winning goal.

Hyderabad FC, on the other hand, is making its ISL debut and faces a challenging task against BFC. The club has undergone a financial transformation under the ownership of the BC Jindal group, but concerns remain about its on-field performance. Hyderabad FC finished last in the 2023-24 ISL season, recording only one win in 22 matches.

Hyderabad FC head coach Thangboi Singto acknowledges the team’s need to improve. “We want to build things now, and the next two or three matches will be crucial since a few overseas players are yet to join the team. Once they join us, understand us, and we understand them, we will have a clearer picture of where we want to reach,” Singto said.

BFC will be looking to improve its head-to-head record against Hyderabad FC, having won only two of their last 10 ISL meetings. The match will be a test of BFC’s ability to maintain their momentum and Hyderabad FC’s determination to make a strong start to their ISL campaign.

Kane Breaks Rooney's Champions League Record with Four-Goal Haul

Kane Breaks Rooney’s Champions League Record with Four-Goal Haul

Harry Kane’s historic performance against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night has cemented his status as one of the most prolific goalscorers in Champions League history. The Bayern Munich striker shattered Wayne Rooney’s record for the most goals scored by an English player in the competition, netting four times in a 9-2 rout.

Kane’s goalscoring exploits were part of a record-breaking night for Bayern, who became the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League match since the competition’s inception in 1992. The victory also marked an emphatic start to the European campaign for new coach Vincent Kompany.

Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, drawing level with Rooney’s record of 30 goals. He then surpassed the former Manchester United striker with a rebound goal in the 53rd minute. Two more penalties in the 73rd and 78th minutes extended Kane’s record to 33 goals.

The 31-year-old has now scored 12 Champions League goals for Bayern since joining the club a year ago, adding to the 21 he scored for Tottenham Hotspur. He has also netted 53 goals in 50 games in all competitions for Bayern.

Kane’s impressive form has continued into the new season, with the striker scoring nine goals in his last three games for club and country. He scored twice for England against Finland in his 100th international appearance and netted a hat-trick for Bayern against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.

Another record was broken on the night as Thomas Müller came off the bench to make his 152nd Champions League appearance for Bayern. This surpassed the previous record held by former Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez, who made 151 appearances for the Spanish club. Müller is now the player with the most Champions League appearances for a single club.

Bayern’s emphatic victory was a testament to their attacking prowess and the quality of their squad. Four other players scored for the German giants, including two goals from new signing Michael Olise on his Champions League debut. Leon Goretzka’s header in stoppage time sealed the record-breaking win.

Mbappé Scores in Champions League Debut for Real Madrid

Mbappé Scores in Champions League Debut for Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappé, the French football sensation, has reignited his pursuit of a European title with a goal in his Champions League debut for Real Madrid. The 24-year-old forward found the net just seconds into the second half of Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Stuttgart at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Mbappé’s goal, which came after a cross from Rodrygo, gave the defending champions an early lead. However, Stuttgart equalized through Deniz Undav in the 68th minute. Antonio Rüdiger restored Madrid’s advantage in the 83rd minute, and substitute Endrick sealed the victory deep into stoppage time.

Mbappé’s goal was his 49th in the Champions League, placing him among the top 10 all-time scorers in the competition. It was also his third goal in three consecutive matches and his fifth in seven games for Madrid in all competitions.

“I can do more,” Mbappé said after the match. “I’m feeling better match after match.”

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was named the man of the match for his crucial saves that prevented Stuttgart from capitalizing on their scoring opportunities.

Mbappé had been relatively quiet before scoring, with his best chance coming in the 25th minute when his low shot was saved. He was also free inside the area a few minutes later, but Federico Valverde’s cross was intercepted.

Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances early on, with Stuttgart posing the greater threat. The German side had several one-on-one situations and even hit the crossbar. Vinícius Júnior also hit the crossbar for Madrid.

Mbappé, who won the 2018 World Cup with France, failed to win the Champions League during his seven seasons with Paris Saint-Germain. He joined Madrid as a free agent at the end of last season, hoping to boost his chances of lifting the European trophy with the team that has won the competition six times in the last 11 years.

Mbappé reached the semifinals of the Champions League with Monaco in 2017 and was a beaten finalist with PSG in 2020. He was also in the semifinals with PSG in 2021 and last season.
