Inter Miami’s Unbeaten Run Ends with 2-3 Home Loss to Montreal

Inter Miami’s unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt end on Sunday as they succumbed to a 2-3 home defeat against Montreal. The absence of talisman Lionel Messi, who was sidelined with a shin injury, proved costly for the hosts.

Montreal took the lead in the first half through Fernando Alvarez’s header. Inter Miami equalized in the 71st minute through Leonarda Campana, but their defense faltered, allowing Matias Coccaro and Sunusi Ibrahim to score in quick succession.

Despite the setback, Inter Miami showed some resilience, with Jordi Alba scoring a consolation goal reminiscent of Messi’s brilliance. Alba received the ball on the edge of the box and curled a shot into the top corner.

Assistant coach Javier Morales explained Messi’s absence, stating that the Argentine is eager to play every game. Head coach Tata Martino expressed disappointment with the team’s defensive performance, despite believing they deserved to win.

Messi is expected to return for Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Nashville. He will be keen to avoid fatigue and exhaustion ahead of the Copa America, where Argentina will defend their title.

Mohun Bagan Triumphs in Kolkata Derby, Tops ISL Standings

Mohun Bagan Sporting Club (MBSC) emerged victorious in the highly anticipated return derby of the Indian Super League (ISL) against its arch-rival East Bengal FC (EBFC) at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday. The 3-1 triumph propelled MBSC to the top of the league standings with 36 points from 17 matches.

The match began with a missed penalty opportunity for EBFC captain Cleiton Silva in the 14th minute. MBSC goalkeeper Vishal Kaith made a crucial save, denying EBFC an early lead. This setback seemed to galvanize MBSC, who took control of the game and found the opening goal in the 27th minute. Jason Cummings tapped home a rebound after Dimitri Petratos’ effort was blocked by EBFC custodian Prabhsukhan Gill.

MBSC continued to dominate the proceedings and doubled their lead in the 37th minute. Petratos set up Liston Colaco with a precise pass, allowing the latter to slot the ball into the net. The first half ended with MBSC firmly in control, leading 2-0.

The second half saw EBFC make a valiant effort to get back into the game. They pulled one back through Saul Crespo’s stunning goal in the 53rd minute. However, MBSC remained resolute and sealed the victory with a penalty converted by Petratos in injury time.

The result was a major setback for EBFC, who remain in the bottom half of the table. MBSC, on the other hand, extended their unbeaten run to five matches and strengthened their position as title contenders.

The Kolkata derby in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Sunday evening witnessed a dominant performance by Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who outplayed East Bengal 3-1 to secure a spot in the play-offs.

Mohun Bagan’s victory was orchestrated by a scintillating first-half display, with Jason Cummings, Liston Colaco, and Dimitri Petratos finding the back of the net. East Bengal’s only goal came from Saul Crespo in the second half.

The match started with a penalty awarded to Mohun Bagan in the 13th minute, but East Bengal goalkeeper Vishal Kaith made a crucial save to deny Cleiton Silva. However, Mohun Bagan’s relentless pressure paid off as Cummings tapped in a rebound from Prabhsukhan Gill’s parry in the 27th minute.

Colaco doubled the lead ten minutes later with a simple finish after a defensive lapse by East Bengal. Petratos then extended the advantage just before half-time with a powerful penalty kick, taking his tally for the season to eight goals.

East Bengal showed more urgency in the second half, but Kaith continued to be a formidable presence in goal, denying Silva on multiple occasions. The Mariners also missed a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when Nandhakumar Sekar’s pass was overhit, preventing Silva from getting a clear shot on goal.

Despite East Bengal’s efforts, Mohun Bagan maintained their composure and controlled the tempo of the game. Petratos’s right-footed strike in the 45th minute sealed the victory for the Mariners, who now sit atop the ISL standings with 36 points.

The match was also notable for the presence of India head coach Igor Stimac, who witnessed the impressive performances of Mohun Bagan’s Sahal Abdul Samad and Petratos.

Liverpool and City Draw in Title Showdown, Arsenal Retain Top Spot

In a pulsating Premier League title showdown, Liverpool and Manchester City played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at Anfield, leaving Arsenal atop the standings. City took the lead through John Stones’ first-half strike, but Alexis Mac Allister equalized with a penalty after the break.

The result keeps Arsenal in first place, one point ahead of Liverpool and two ahead of City, with all three teams having 10 games remaining. The Gunners will face City in a potentially decisive clash on March 31.

City’s goal came from a clever set-piece routine, with Kevin De Bruyne’s corner finding Stones at the near post for a close-range finish. Liverpool leveled in the second half when Nathan Ake’s back-pass was intercepted by Darwin Nunez, leading to a reckless challenge by Ederson and a penalty converted by Mac Allister.

In a frantic finale, City’s Jeremy Doku hit the post and escaped a penalty appeal for a high challenge on Nunez. The match was given added significance by Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, and he and Pep Guardiola shared a warm embrace at the final whistle.

Meanwhile, Tottenham reignited their top-four hopes with a 4-0 rout of Aston Villa. James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min, and Timo Werner scored for Spurs, who moved within two points of Villa with a game in hand.

Villa’s captain, John McGinn, was sent off for a challenge on Destiny Udogie, further damaging their Champions League aspirations.

At the London Stadium, Burnley blew a two-goal lead as Danny Ings’ late equalizer rescued a 2-2 draw for West Ham. Vincent Kompany’s side remains in the relegation zone, while Nottingham Forest failed to pull away from danger after a 1-0 defeat at Brighton.

India’s U16 Women’s Football Team Loses SAFF Championship in Penalty Shootout

India’s U16 women’s football team fell short of claiming the SAFF U16 Women’s Championship title, succumbing to Bangladesh 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The match began with India taking an early lead in the fourth minute. Anushka Kumari’s well-executed shot into the far bottom corner gave India the advantage. Bangladesh struggled to gain possession in the opening half, allowing India to maintain control.

However, the second half saw a resurgence from Bangladesh. In the 70th minute, an own goal by Shveta Rani leveled the score. As Indian goalkeeper Munni attempted to punch away a corner, the ball bounced off Shveta and Mariam Binta Hanna, resulting in an unfortunate equalizer.

Despite creating half-chances, India failed to find the winning goal. Surajmuni Kumari was brought in as a substitute goalkeeper for India just seconds before the end of regulation time.

In the penalty shootout, Surajmuni made a save, but Bangladesh’s goalkeeper Begum emerged as the hero, denying India’s attempts and securing the title for her team.

Anushka Kumari, who scored six goals in the tournament, finished as the top scorer. India’s loss marked the end of their title hopes, while Bangladesh celebrated their triumph.

Gokulam Kerala Draws 1-1 with Real Kashmir, Misses Chance to Close Gap

Gokulam Kerala Draws 1-1 with Real Kashmir, Misses Chance to Close Gap

Gokulam Kerala’s hopes of securing a full three points at home against Real Kashmir were dashed in a 1-1 draw on Sunday. The former I-League champion had conceded goals in the dying seconds of its previous two matches, but this time it managed to avoid a similar fate.

Despite a promising start, Gokulam found itself trailing midway through the second half when Gnohere Krizo capitalized on a defensive lapse to give Real Kashmir the lead. However, the host responded swiftly, with Matija Babovic equalizing just three minutes later thanks to an excellent pass from P.N. Noufal.

Gokulam enjoyed a 61% possession advantage in the first half and earned several corner kicks, but it failed to convert its chances. The second half saw both teams waste numerous opportunities, with the draw ultimately a fair reflection of the match.

The result leaves Gokulam in third place on the I-League table with 33 points, one behind Real Kashmir, which has played a game less. Mohammedan Sporting remains the league leader with 41 points, while Sreenidi Deccan is second with 36.

Inter Milan Extend Serie A Lead to 18 Points with Bologna Win

Inter Milan Extend Serie A Lead to 18 Points with Bologna Win

Inter Milan’s relentless march towards the Serie A title continued on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at in-form Bologna. The win extended Inter’s massive league lead to 18 points, making the championship a virtual certainty.

Yann Bisseck’s headed goal in the 37th minute proved to be the difference in a tight contest at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. The German defender’s second goal of the season extended Inter’s all-competitions winning streak to 13 matches, emphasizing their dominance in the league.

“This is one of the most difficult places to play… beating Bologna is not easy. We gave everything,” said Nicolo Barella to DAZN. “Who knows how soon we can win it (the league), it depends on the other teams. It’s difficult for those chasing us, let’s hope it stays difficult for them.”

Second-placed Juventus have a chance to reduce the gap when they host Atalanta on Sunday. However, with the title race effectively over, Atalanta will have more to play for as they battle Bologna for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Bologna’s defeat snapped a six-match winning streak and opened the door for other teams aiming for the top four. Atalanta are five points off Bologna in sixth, while Roma can move to within one point with a win at Fiorentina on Sunday.

Despite Bologna’s impressive season, they were unable to find a way past Yann Sommer in goal. “You can’t concede in the way we did because once you’re behind against a team like Inter, they know how to manage the game,” said Bologna coach Thiago Motta.

Inter now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they defend a 1-0 lead against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. “It will be a great match, the Champions League is possibly the best competition and we need to stay in it as long as we can,” said Barella.

In other Serie A action, Cagliari moved out of the relegation zone with a thrilling 4-2 win over Salernitana, who continued to slide towards the drop. Sassuolo also picked up their first win under new coach Davide Ballardini, defeating Frosinone 1-0.

Sancho's Solo Stunner Secures Dortmund Victory

Sancho’s Solo Stunner Secures Dortmund Victory

Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho has been hailed by both his coach and sporting director after his stunning goal secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday. The win keeps Dortmund in fourth place in the Bundesliga, on track for Champions League qualification next season.

Sancho’s goal, his first since returning to Dortmund on loan from Manchester United in January, was a trademark solo effort that showcased his exceptional dribbling skills and clinical finishing. The England winger received the ball on the left flank, danced past several Bremen defenders, and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

“Doing something like that, you can of course see what a great footballer he is,” said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “You can see how he can make the difference, especially in one-on-one situations.”

Sancho’s goal put Dortmund 2-0 up, but the visitors were forced to hold on for a narrow victory after Marcel Sabitzer was sent off with a straight red card shortly after. It was Sancho’s first goal in eight matches since returning to the side and his first in Dortmund colors in 1,031 days, dating back to May 2021.

Kehl, who played a key role in bringing Sancho back to the club, said the 23-year-old was “rewarded” for his hard work. “Everyone is happy for Jadon because they saw how hard he was working and how willing he was to help the team. Goals help. He’s had one or two assists before, but this goal will help him and give him a boost.”

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, who was in charge when the Black and Yellows won the German Cup in 2021 thanks to two goals from Sancho, praised the winger’s performance. “It’s an example of what he’s capable of and hopefully he can continue like this. He’s not limiting himself to scoring a goal — it was his entire performance. We know he’s not 100 percent, there’s no way he can be (after a long layoff). But we’ll get him there.”

Kehl compared Sancho’s return to a player returning from injury and said Dortmund would need the winger in Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 second leg at home to PSV Eindhoven. “You should not forget that he didn’t play for a long time. It’s like when a player has a cruciate ligament injury and is out for a long time. We need him and we will again on Wednesday and for the coming weeks.”

Dortmund drew 1-1 in the first leg in the Netherlands and need a win to ensure progression to the quarter finals.

Girona Soar to Second, Atletico Stumble at Cadiz

Girona Soar to Second, Atletico Stumble at Cadiz

Girona’s resurgence continued on Saturday as they secured a 2-0 victory over Osasuna, propelling them back into second place in La Liga. The triumph came at the expense of Atletico Madrid, who suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat at Cadiz, further denting their hopes of a top-three finish.

Girona’s dominance was evident from the outset, and they were rewarded with a goal from Cristian Portu just 13 minutes into the match. Viktor Tsygankov’s incisive pass found Portu in the box, and the Spaniard’s clinical finish gave Girona the early advantage.

Despite Girona’s dominance, Osasuna remained a threat, and Tsygankov nearly provided a second assist for Artem Dovbyk, but the Ukrainian forward failed to convert. Daley Blind also came close to doubling Girona’s lead, but his effort was blocked by the Osasuna defense.

Girona’s persistence paid off in the 85th minute when Savinho found the net. However, the goal was initially ruled out for a foul, but the Brazilian’s disappointment was short-lived as he struck again two minutes later. Miguel Gutierrez’s pass found Aleix Garcia, whose backheel set up Savinho for a left-footed finish that sealed the victory.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid’s struggles continued with a disappointing defeat at Cadiz. Juanmi’s brace either side of half-time condemned Diego Simeone’s men to their seventh defeat of the season.

The first half was marred by fouls, and Cadiz took the lead through Juanmi’s unmarked header midway through the period. Simeone made changes at half-time, but Juanmi struck again just after the hour mark, securing the victory for the Andalusian side.

The result leaves Atletico four points behind Girona in third, while Cadiz moved closer to safety, provisionally moving within two points of 17th place.

In other La Liga action, Real Sociedad came from behind to win 3-2 at Granada, while Valencia climbed to eighth with a 1-0 victory over Getafe.

Arsenal Storm to Premier League Summit with Dramatic Brentford Win

Arsenal Storm to Premier League Summit with Dramatic Brentford Win

Arsenal’s relentless pursuit of the Premier League title reached new heights as they dramatically secured a 2-1 victory over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners’ triumph propelled them to the summit of the league standings, one point ahead of Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the early proceedings, with Declan Rice heading home a superb cross from Ben White in the 19th minute. However, Arsenal’s momentum was halted just before halftime when goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale’s error allowed Yoane Wissa to equalize for Brentford.

Ramsdale’s blunder, which saw him hesitate too long to clear a back-pass, gifted Brentford an unexpected lifeline. The Arsenal keeper was visibly shaken by his mistake, but his teammates rallied around him.

As the second half unfolded, Arsenal continued to press for a winner. Ramsdale partially redeemed himself with a stunning save to deny Ivan Toney’s audacious effort from distance. Rice also came close to restoring Arsenal’s lead, but his curler from the edge of the area rattled the crossbar.

With time running out, Kai Havertz emerged as Arsenal’s savior. The German forward found space in the six-yard box and met White’s cross with a powerful header that sent the Emirates Stadium into raptures.

Havertz’s late strike ensured Arsenal’s eighth consecutive league victory, a remarkable feat that has propelled them to the top of the table. The Gunners’ title aspirations remain alive, and they will face a crucial test on Sunday when Liverpool and Manchester City clash at Anfield.
