The Brewers drew first blood in the second inning when Jackson Chourio, another 20-year-old rookie, launched a two-run homer off Padres starter Joe Musgrove. However, the Padres responded with a six-run rally in the fifth inning, fueled by a series of singles and a pitch-clock violation.

Luis Campusano, Tyler Wade, and Xander Bogaerts loaded the bases with consecutive singles to start the inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. then grounded into a fielder’s choice, bringing home one run. A passed ball by catcher William Contreras allowed Wade to score the tying run.

Jake Cronenworth reached on catcher’s interference, loading the bases again. Manny Machado followed with an infield single, driving in Bogaerts with the go-ahead run. Ross struck out Jurickson Profar and had a 3-2 count on Ha-Seong Kim before committing a pitch-clock violation, loading the bases once more.

Merrill, who turns 21 on Friday, singled home two runs, and Campusano added an RBI single before Ross exited the game. The Brewers threatened in the ninth inning, but Robert Suarez retired Sal Frelick on a flyout to left to earn his sixth save.

Musgrove pitched six innings for the Padres, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks. Ross took the loss for the Brewers, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Mykolas Alekna, the 21-year-old Lithuanian discus thrower, has shattered the longest-standing men’s world record in track and field, eclipsing a mark that had stood for 38 years.

Alekna’s record-breaking throw of 74.35m came at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational meet on Sunday. It surpassed the previous record of 74.08m set by East German Jurgen Schult in 1986.

Alekna’s achievement is particularly remarkable given that he is still in the early stages of his career. He is the son of Virgilijus Alekna, a two-time Olympic and world champion discus thrower.

Mykolas Alekna’s rise to the top has been rapid. He won the European and world U-20 championships in 2021 and went on to win gold at the European Championships and silver at the World Championships in 2022.

Alekna’s progression has been consistent, with his season bests improving significantly over the past few years. He credits his father as his “big idol” and says that fishing is his most relaxing getaway from his profession.

However, the competition in the trials will be fierce. Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh, and Rhythm Sangwan will all be vying for the two air pistol quotas alongside Palak. Esha had previously earned the other quota spot.

“Shooters know that if you do not do well, all your hard work of two or three years is going to go to waste,” said 25m pistol coach Ronak Pandit. “So, the pressure is going to be enormous.”

Despite the pressure, Palak’s personal coach, Singh, believes she is mature beyond her age. “She is mentally strong and very mature. Her attention level at the time when she is in the firing lane is amazing, and that’s what counts in shooting,” he said.

Palak’s journey to the Olympics has been marked by both triumph and adversity. After her Asian Games gold, she struggled a bit and finished 25th at the Asian Championships. However, she stepped up just at the right time to seal the Olympic quota in the qualifying event in Rio, where she won a bronze medal.

Now, Palak faces the challenge of defending her quota and proving that she is worthy of representing India at the Olympics. The trials will be a true test of her mental strength and shooting prowess.
