Pakistani wrestler Ali Asad has been stripped of his bronze medal from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The Pakistan Wrestling Federation confirmed the four-year ban and medal revocation following an investigation by the International Testing Agency (ITA).

Asad’s positive test was confirmed by the ITA, prompting the ruling this week. The wrestler waived his right to a hearing and failed to respond to the allegations within the stipulated deadline.

This incident adds to a growing list of doping bans faced by Pakistani athletes in recent years. In May 2023, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) imposed four-year bans on four Pakistani weightlifters for anti-doping violations. Abdur Rehman, Sharjeel Butt, Ghulam Mustafa, and Farhan Amjad were suspended for refusing to provide samples to the ITA in November 2021.

Despite appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), the suspensions were upheld. Top weightlifters Olympian Talha Talib and Abu Bakar Ghani also received two-year bans for using banned substances. Talib, who placed fifth in the Tokyo Olympics, remains banned until February 2025.

The Pakistan Wrestling Federation and the IWF have expressed concern over the increasing number of doping cases involving Pakistani athletes. They have emphasized the importance of adhering to anti-doping regulations and promoting clean sport.

The use of performance-enhancing drugs not only violates the principles of fair play but also poses significant health risks to athletes. The authorities are committed to combating doping and ensuring the integrity of sports competitions.

Despite his best result on the Legends Tour, Jeev expressed disappointment with his final round performance, which saw him card a four-over 76 at the Jaypee Greens Golf Course. The Indian legend tumbled out of contention in the USD 500,000 event, but his country still enjoyed a strong showing.

Jyoti Randhawa (tied ninth), Mukesh Kumar (tied 15th), and Amandeep Johl (tied 22nd) all finished in the top 25. Jeev’s round started promisingly, as he took advantage of Haeggman’s opening bogey to share the lead. However, the Swede quickly regained his composure, birdieing three holes to establish a five-shot advantage at the turn.

Jeev fought back with a birdie on the 15th, but Haeggman’s bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes brought the Indian back into contention. The gap was down to two shots as the final group approached the 18th tee, but Jeev’s gamble to pressure Haeggman backfired.

His tee shot found the water, and his third shot landed on the 10th tee box. A chip back to the 18th green and another to the putting surface resulted in a triple-bogey, dropping Jeev from tied second to tied third.

Haeggman, meanwhile, parred the last three holes to secure a two-stroke victory. England’s Marshall, who finished ahead of the final group, shot a superb 7-under 65 to finish second.

Mukesh Kumar had the best round of the day for an Indian, carding a 2-under 70 to finish tied 15th. Johl’s 1-over 73 left him tied 22nd, while Vishal Singh, Digvijay Singh, Vijay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, and Harmeet Kahlon finished further down the leaderboard.

On the advice of his physiotherapist, Antil reluctantly gave up his beloved sweets and shed 12 kilograms in two months. This sacrifice paid off as he clinched gold with a record throw of 70.59m, surpassing his previous Paralympic best of 68.55m.

Antil’s back injury, sustained in 2023, has been a constant challenge. He has relied on painkillers and precautions to protect his back during training and competitions. After his return to India, his first priority will be to address this injury.

India will face stiff competition from Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan, and hosts China in the Asian Champions Trophy. The team will begin their campaign against China on September 8, followed by a match against Japan on September 9.

After a one-day break, India will take on Malaysia on September 11, followed by Korea on September 12 and arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. The top four teams will advance to the semifinals slated for September 16, with the final scheduled for September 17.

India are the most successful team in the tournament with four titles, followed by Pakistan (3). India won the last edition in Chennai, beating Malaysia 4-3 in the final.

Vice captain Vivek Sagar Prasad expressed confidence in the team’s ability to defend their title, despite the presence of a few new players. “We will do our best to create a nurturing environment for them on the way to our title defense,” he said.

The upcoming World Chess Championship match between reigning champion Ding Liren and Indian prodigy D Gukesh has witnessed a significant change in prize fund distribution. In a bid to encourage decisive results and discourage draws, the global chess body FIDE has introduced a new format where players will be rewarded for each classical game they win.

Of the $2.5 million prize fund, $200,000 will be awarded for each classical game victory, with the remaining prize money split equally between the players. This move aims to incentivize aggressive play and reduce the number of drawn games, which have been prevalent in recent title matches.

In last year’s match between Ding and Ian Nepomniachtchi, 11 of the 14 classical games ended in draws. To address this issue, FIDE has also revised the tiebreak format. Instead of the previous four rapid games and two blitz games, the new format features four rapid games (15 minutes plus 10-second increment) followed by two more rapid games (10 minutes plus 5-second increment). If the scores remain tied, a two-minute blitz playoff (3 minutes plus 2-second increment) will be played.

This gradual decrease in time controls is intended to provide a more balanced and exciting tiebreak format. Both players have been consulted and have agreed to the new format.

While Gukesh excels in classical chess, Ding holds a higher ranking in rapid chess. However, Gukesh’s recent performance in the Candidates Tournament has demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure.

The match will be a test of both players’ skills and resilience. Ding will be aiming to defend his title, while Gukesh will be looking to make history as the youngest World Chess Champion. The new prize fund distribution and tiebreak format are expected to add an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the match.
