IOA Crisis Deepens as Usha and EC Members Trade Accusations

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is embroiled in a deepening crisis as President PT Usha and members of the executive committee (EC) engage in a bitter exchange of accusations.

Usha had issued notices to five EC members on September 10, alleging that they held positions in violation of the IOA constitution and Sports Code. Vice-president and EC member Rajlaxmi Singh Deo has retaliated, questioning Usha’s own election as IOA president.

Deo claims that Usha’s “Proposer” and “Seconder” for her nomination were not approved by the IOA General Body, rendering her election “illegal.” She cites the IOA Constitution, which outlines the process for nominating and electing Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) to the EC.

Deo has invited Usha to respond to her allegations, which she has shared with the Sports Minister and the International Olympic Committee. Usha was elected IOA president in December 2022, becoming one of eight SOMs selected by the Athletes Commission.

The crisis within the IOA stems from the appointment of CEO Raghu Ram Iyer in January. Usha and the majority of the EC oppose the appointment, leading to a power struggle that has escalated after the Paris Olympics.

Besides Deo, EC members Ajay Patel, Sahdev Yadav, Bhupinder Singh Bajwa, and Alaknanda Ashok have been accused of violating the Sports Code. Deo has criticized Usha for acting on an “anonymous” letter and failing to investigate the complainant’s veracity.

She has accused Usha of malicious intent, aiming to silence EC members who have raised concerns about her alleged violations of the IOA constitution. The ongoing turmoil has severely impacted the functioning of the IOA, casting a shadow over its preparations for future sporting events.

Nihal acknowledges his current struggles, admitting that his game has not been up to par. He has crossed the 2600 Elo rating mark twice, but his progress has been hindered by inconsistent results.

Despite his challenges, Nihal offers valuable insights into the success of his teammates. He attributes their achievements to their exceptional strength, focus, motivation, and hard work. He also highlights their ability to manage risk effectively, a crucial skill in chess.

Arjun’s mastery of unbalanced positions has been evident in both the 2023 Chess World Cup and the Olympiad. Nihal emphasizes the difficulty of consistently dominating lower-rated players, a feat that Arjun has accomplished with remarkable consistency.

The success of others can serve as inspiration, and Nihal acknowledges that he may need to make changes to his approach. He recognizes the importance of enjoying the game and expressing oneself, but admits that it is easier to disregard ratings when they are rising.

As the final rounds of the Olympiad approach, the Indian team will face increasing pressure. Nihal believes that maintaining composure will be paramount. He emphasizes the unpredictable nature of chess, where a single mistake can overturn a winning position.

The stewards determined that Verstappen had used language that was “generally considered ‘coarse, rude’ or may ’cause offence’ and is not considered suitable for broadcast.” They noted that the language was not directed at anyone or any group, but emphasized the importance of role models being mindful of their speech in public forums.

Verstappen apologized for his behavior, explaining that the word he used is common in his native language, Dutch. However, the stewards maintained that it was inappropriate for a public figure to use such language, especially when children might be watching.

The punishment comes just a day after FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem urged drivers to tone down their use of foul language over team radio during races. Ben Sulayem compared the use of foul language to rap music, drawing criticism from some drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, who felt the comparison was racially insensitive.

Verstappen’s punishment is a reminder of the FIA’s commitment to maintaining a professional and respectful environment in Formula One. While drivers are allowed to express their emotions, they must do so in a manner that is appropriate for a global audience.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is embroiled in a bitter internal conflict that is having a detrimental impact on athletes. Winter Olympian Arif Khan’s training for the 2026 Winter Olympics has been severely disrupted due to the IOA finance committee’s refusal to release scholarship funds provided by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Under the Olympic Solidarity funding program, the IOC approved a $6,000 scholarship for Khan’s preparation for the Milano Cortina Games and transferred the funds to IOA on May 8. However, the finance committee, headed by Sr. Vice President Ajay Patel, has inexplicably withheld the funds.

IOA President PT Usha has expressed her frustration in a letter to IOC officials, requesting that the amount be transferred directly to Khan’s account. She has also questioned the finance committee’s decision to challenge Khan’s selection for the scholarship program.

The conflict within the IOA has escalated since the appointment of CEO Raghu Iyer in January. The majority of executive committee members and Usha have been at odds, leading to a breakdown in governance and financial management.

Khan has repeatedly appealed to IOA officials to release the funds, but his requests have been ignored. “The delay in the release of these funds is severely impacting my training schedule and preparation for the Winter Olympics,” he wrote to Usha.

The IOC has been monitoring the situation and has expressed concern over the internal conflict within the IOA. “We are aware that these funds have not been transferred to you by your NOC and we have been following up with them on a regular basis,” said Edward Kensington, Olympic Solidarity Continental Manager, Asia.

The IOC has initiated the process for the IOA to request a direct transfer of funds to Khan. However, the ongoing conflict within the IOA threatens to further delay the release of the scholarship.
