Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad: The Future of Indian Cricket Post-Kohli and Rohit

As the legendary duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma approach the twilight of their illustrious careers, Indian cricket fans are eagerly looking towards the next generation of stars to carry the torch. Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla believes that Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad possess the talent and potential to fill the void left by the departing greats.

Chawla, who has shared the dressing room with both Kohli and Rohit, recently expressed his admiration for Gill and Gaikwad on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast. He hailed Gill’s exceptional technique as a key factor in his success. “Shubman Gill—because of his technique. Whenever one goes through poor form, a batter who is technically strong can come out of it. Any batter who has a good technique cannot stay out of form for too long,” Chawla said.

Gill, 25, has already established himself as a vital cog in the Indian batting lineup. With 25 Tests, 47 ODIs, and 21 T20Is under his belt, he has amassed over 4,400 international runs, including 11 centuries. His ability to adapt to different formats and conditions has made him a reliable performer for India.

While Gaikwad, 27, has faced some setbacks due to injuries and selection issues, Chawla remains confident in his abilities. “It [getting dropped or injured] is part and parcel of the game. It will keep happening. But, whenever he has got the opportunity, he has looked different. For me, these two players (Gill and Gaikwad) are special,” Chawla added.

Gaikwad has shown glimpses of his brilliance in the limited opportunities he has received. In six ODIs and 23 T20Is, he has scored over 750 runs, including a T20I century. His aggressive batting style and ability to clear the boundary with ease make him a valuable asset to any team.

With Kohli and Rohit nearing retirement, the onus will fall on Gill and Gaikwad to lead the Indian batting charge in the years to come. Their talent, determination, and experience make them the ideal candidates to carry the legacy of their illustrious predecessors.

Rafael Nadal’s Retirement: Garbine Muguruza Weighs In

Rafael Nadal’s recent withdrawal from the Laver Cup has sparked speculation about his retirement. While the tennis legend has hinted at winding down his career, his exact plans remain uncertain.

Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, who retired earlier this year, believes Nadal is ready to move on. She cites his physical and mental readiness, as well as his desire to spend more time with his family.

Nadal’s off-ramp has been a moving target, with many expecting him to retire after Roland Garros or the Olympics. However, he has continued to play, albeit with reduced intensity.

Despite his uncertain future, Nadal remains a beloved figure in tennis. Players like Matteo Berrettini, Andrey Rublev, and Dominic Thiem have expressed their admiration for his warrior spirit and the impact he has had on the sport.

Berrettini, who lost to Nadal in the 2019 US Open semifinals, considers it an honor to have played against him. Rublev, who has a rare clay-court win over Nadal, recalls their 2017 US Open quarterfinal as a “fairytale” experience.

Thiem, who has six career victories against Nadal, believes the Spaniard’s future is uncertain. He notes that Nadal’s situation has changed since their last meeting in January.

While Nadal’s retirement may be imminent, his legacy as one of the greatest tennis players of all time is secure. His determination, resilience, and passion for the sport have inspired countless players and fans around the world.

Somerset Stun Surrey in Thrilling County Championship Finish

Somerset Stun Surrey in Thrilling County Championship Finish

Somerset’s thrilling victory over Surrey in the County Championship Division One has reignited the title race, with the defending champions’ lead now reduced to eight points. The match witnessed a dramatic final session, with Somerset securing victory with just minutes remaining.

Tom Banton, who had top-scored for Somerset in the first innings with 132, suffered a setback when he rolled his ankle while playing football. The injury is expected to rule him out of Saturday’s Blast semi-final rematch against Surrey.

Archie Vaughan, the son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, emerged as a hero for Somerset, claiming match figures of 11 for 140. Jack Leach also played a crucial role, taking 9 for 142.

Surrey’s collapse from 95 for 3 to 109 all out in the final session handed Somerset the victory. Somerset captain Lewis Gregory praised his team’s resilience and highlighted the exceptional performances of Vaughan and Leach.

“It was a crazy hour at the end,” Gregory said. “There were periods when not much happened, but the lads hung in there and Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan were fantastic the whole game.”

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty acknowledged the team’s concentration lapse in the final hour but remained confident in their ability to retain the title.

“We had a concentration lapse for the last hour of the game and it cost us the result,” Batty said. “We are still top of the league and eight points clear.”

With two rounds of the Championship remaining, Surrey’s destiny remains in their own hands. They will host Durham at home before traveling to Chelmsford to face Essex. Somerset, meanwhile, will aim to maintain their momentum and challenge for a domestic treble, having already progressed to the One-Day Cup final.

Salman Nizar's Blazing Knock Steals Victory for Calicut Globstars

Salman Nizar’s Blazing Knock Steals Victory for Calicut Globstars

In a thrilling encounter of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL), Calicut Globstars pulled off a remarkable heist against Kochi Blue Tigers, thanks to a blazing knock by Salman Nizar.

Chasing a challenging target of 170, Globstars were in dire straits at 79 for six. However, Nizar stepped up to the plate and played an unforgettable innings, smashing an unbeaten 73 off just 41 deliveries. His knock was studded with four boundaries and six towering sixes.

Nizar’s heroics were complemented by a crucial 61-run partnership with M. Nikhil (27). The duo revived Globstars’ hopes and brought them within striking distance of victory.

In the final over, Globstars needed 21 runs to win. Nizar took matters into his own hands, carting left-arm spinner P.S. Jerin for three consecutive sixes. He then scampered a two and took a single to seal the victory with one ball to spare.

Earlier, Kochi Blue Tigers had posted a competitive 169 for four, thanks to a standout performance by Shoun Roger. Roger’s unbeaten 73 off 38 balls, which included seven fours and five sixes, propelled the Tigers to a daunting total.

In the other match of the day, Alleppey Ripples snapped their losing streak by ending Trivandrum Royal’s unbeaten run with a 52-run victory. Ripples defended the lowest total (125/7) in a winning cause in the tournament after bundling out Royals for a mere 73.

Akshay Chandran was the star performer for Ripples, claiming four wickets for just nine runs in his four overs. His victims included the prized scalp of Abdul Basith, whose ill-advised reverse sweep resulted in a catch to wicketkeeper Azharuddeen.

Chennaiyin FC Revamps Squad with 13 New Faces, Aims for ISL Glory

Chennaiyin FC (CFC), the two-time Indian Super League champion, has undergone a significant squad overhaul this season. The team boasts 13 new faces, including several promising young domestic players. Twelve players have departed the club for various reasons.

Head coach Owen Coyle, known for his willingness to embrace challenges, is confident in his team’s abilities. In his previous two seasons with CFC, he guided the team to the playoffs and even the final in 2019-20. This time, Coyle believes his squad has the depth and talent to make a strong run.

“We will probably get two players for every position (this time) and we didn’t have that last year, certainly to the strength and depth of the new season. But I think this year we know we have players who can be game-changers. So, it gives us certainly far more competition for places which really is important,” Coyle said at a press conference.

Coyle expressed his satisfaction with the players’ desire to improve, which he sees as a positive sign for the club’s performance and potential to win the tournament.

“We have players who really want to improve, both young and experienced, who want to put their hands up. For example, the experienced Mandar Rao Dessai has a point to prove. He has been a champion. He wants to show his quality again having played for East Bengal last year,” Coyle said.

“So, everybody has got something to play for, and that is what I need. Players who are motivated and hungry, not feeling happy to play games,” the 58-year-old Scot added.

Chennaiyin will kick off its new season on September 14 against Odisha in Bhubaneswar. The players are aware of the competition within the squad and are eager to prove their worth.

Markhors Crush Panthers by 160 Runs in Champions One-Day Cup Opener

Markhors Crush Panthers by 160 Runs in Champions One-Day Cup Opener

In the inaugural match of the Champions One-Day Cup, Markhors, led by Mohammad Rizwan, emerged victorious over Shadab Khan’s Panthers by a commanding 160 runs.

Panthers, after winning the toss, opted to field first. Markhors’ innings was anchored by Kamran Ghulam’s masterful 115 off 102 deliveries, laying the foundation for their formidable total of 347 for 6. Abdul Samad’s blistering 25-ball 62 in the final overs propelled Markhors to a daunting score.

Panthers’ chase faltered from the outset as Naseem Shah’s incisive opening spell reduced them to 52 for 6. Shah’s 3-27, complemented by Shahnawaz Dahani’s two wickets, shattered Panthers’ hopes of a competitive chase.

Despite a valiant 72 from Amad Butt, Panthers were unable to recover from their early collapse. Mubasir Khan and Usama Mir’s half-century partnerships provided some resistance, but the Markhors’ dominance was unyielding.

The victory marked a successful start for Markhors in the tournament, while Panthers will seek redemption in their upcoming matches. The opening game showcased the high-octane action and competitive spirit that the Champions One-Day Cup promises to deliver.

India Defender Anwar Ali Challenges AIFF Suspension

India Defender Anwar Ali Challenges AIFF Suspension

India Defender Anwar Ali, East Bengal, and Delhi FC Challenge AIFF Suspension

India defender Anwar Ali, along with his current club East Bengal and parent club Delhi FC, have filed a writ petition with the Delhi High Court challenging the four-month suspension imposed on the player by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The suspension stems from Anwar’s alleged “illegal termination” of his four-year contract with Mohun Bagan.

The AIFF’s Players Status Committee found Anwar guilty of breaching his contract and ordered him, East Bengal, and Delhi FC to pay a hefty compensation of Rs 12.90 crore to Mohun Bagan. The compensation includes Rs 8.40 crore for the residual value of the contract, Rs 2 crore paid to Delhi FC under a loan agreement, and Rs 2.50 crore for other damages.

Delhi FC owner Ranjit Bajaj expressed concern over the suspension, stating that it would deprive Anwar of valuable playing time. “How can we let the player lose out on matches in the coming days? You can get money back, but you can’t get the matches back once they are played,” he said.

East Bengal’s top official, Debabrata Sarkar, echoed Bajaj’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of Anwar’s participation in the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL). “We have approached the Delhi HC to ensure that Anwar can play until the AIFF’s Appeals Committee makes a decision on the matter,” Sarkar said. “The player’s career should not be affected at all cost.”

The AIFF’s Players Status Committee also banned East Bengal and Delhi FC from registering players for two transfer windows for their involvement in Anwar’s contract breach. The committee ruled that all three parties are jointly liable for the compensation amount.

Anwar’s transfer to East Bengal sparked controversy in Kolkata, with Mohun Bagan challenging the move and filing a complaint with the AIFF. The 23-year-old defender played a crucial role in Mohun Bagan’s ISL Shield-winning campaign last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 26 games.

The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the writ petition on Friday. The outcome of the case will have significant implications for Anwar’s career and the future of player contracts in Indian football.

Hardik Pandya's Red-Ball Bowling Sparks Test Cricket Speculation

Hardik Pandya’s Red-Ball Bowling Sparks Test Cricket Speculation

Hardik Pandya’s recent social media post showcasing his bowling skills with the red ball has sparked speculation about his potential return to Test cricket. The 30-year-old all-rounder has been absent from the format since 2018 due to injuries and has not played a first-class match since December 2018.

Despite being approached for the World Test Championship final against Australia, Pandya declined, citing his reluctance to replace a regular red-ball player. However, his recent videos suggest he is preparing for a potential return to the longer format.

Pandya remains India’s premier pace-bowling all-rounder, but his absence from Test cricket has left a void in the team. His closest competitors, Shivam Dube and Nitish Reddy, have not yet matched his all-round abilities.

However, Pandya’s intentions regarding his Test future remain unclear. He has not communicated his plans to the team management, and without playing any domestic red-ball cricket, he cannot be directly selected for Test matches.

“It’s heartening to know that Hardik is bowling with red ball but has he really spoken to men who matter (chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma) about his intentions?,” a senior BCCI source questioned.

It is understood that Pandya’s participation in red-ball cricket for Baroda will be crucial in determining his Test prospects. If he performs well in domestic matches, he could earn a recall to the national team for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Pandya’s return to Test cricket would provide India with much-needed balance. He can contribute as a fourth pacer and a lower-order batsman, giving the team greater depth and flexibility. However, his availability and fitness will be key factors in his selection.

Mikel Arteta Signs New Long-Term Contract at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta Signs New Long-Term Contract at Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has signed a new long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium, the Premier League title chasers announced on Thursday. The Gunners said in a statement that the 42-year-old Spaniard, who has reportedly agreed a three-year deal, “has been a key figure in re-establishing us as a force back at the top of English and European football.”

Arteta, who became Arsenal boss in late 2019, said he felt “extremely proud.” “I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here,” he said. “I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.”

Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke said he was delighted with the new deal. “Mikel is a dynamic and passionate manager, who is relentless in the pursuit of excellence,” he said. “He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values, and since joining us as head coach, he has taken the team to another level in an Arsenal way.”

Arteta, who had been working as an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, replaced compatriot Unai Emery as Arsenal boss in December 2019. He won the FA Cup in his first season in charge — his first silverware as a manager.

Arsenal have finished as runners-up to City in the Premier League for the past two seasons. Last term, they went agonisingly close to lifting the trophy for the first time since 2004 before being pipped by City on the last day of the season.

Arteta’s men, who face north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday, are currently fourth in the table after two wins and a draw. They begin their Champions League campaign next week against Atalanta.

Arteta, who played 150 times for Arsenal and captained the side, called for calm last month regarding his contract situation, insisting his focus had been on the transfer window. “We are on it and we will take care of that in the right moment,” said Arteta, who had previously been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

“I don’t think anybody has to panic. I am in the place where I want to be and am really happy. Hopefully the club thinks the same thing and the players I work with, who in my opinion are the most important ones.”

Arsenal strengthened in the summer transfer window, bringing in a clutch of players including Raheem Sterling, Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori. There are still questions over whether they have enough firepower to overhaul champions City after their failure to sign a striker to compete with inconsistent Germany forward Kai Havertz.

But Arsenal sporting director Edu has no doubts about Arteta’s ability to keep the club on course for sustained success. “It’s a very positive and proud moment for everyone at the club and an important part of what we’re all working towards,” Edu said.

“Mikel has shown his qualities since the very first day he joined us, not only as a football manager, but as a person with wonderful values. We have a strong belief in what we are doing and what we want to achieve together. Mikel’s new contract gives us stability and clear direction as we aim for new heights.”

Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Laver Cup, Prioritizes Team Success

Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Laver Cup, Prioritizes Team Success

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the 2024 Laver Cup, citing the need to prioritize the team’s success. The 22-time Grand Slam champion had initially planned to participate in the event, which was likely to be his final tournament of the season. However, Nadal has since reconsidered, recognizing that other players are better suited to help Team Europe secure victory.

Nadal’s decision stems from his desire to support the team in the best way possible. He believes that his absence will allow younger players to step up and contribute to the team’s success. Nadal has fond memories of playing in the Laver Cup and expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete this year. He will be cheering on Team Europe from afar and wishes them the best of luck.

Team Europe has yet to announce a replacement for Nadal. The current lineup includes Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Team World, led by captain John McEnroe, has also announced changes to its roster. Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul will be replaced by Francisco Cerundolo and Thanasi Kokkinakkis.

Nadal’s withdrawal from the Laver Cup raises questions about his future plans. He had previously indicated that 2024 would be his final season on tour, but he has since softened that stance. Nadal’s decision to prioritize the team’s success over his own personal goals is a testament to his commitment to the sport and his desire to see Team Europe succeed.
