Sri Lanka’s historic Test victory over England at The Oval has propelled six of their players to new career-high ratings on the ICC Men’s Test Rankings. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, and Pathum Nissanka led the charge with impressive batting performances.

De Silva’s stylish 69 in the first innings earned him a three-place jump to 13th overall, making him Sri Lanka’s highest-ranked batter. Mendis gained six places to 19th after a half-century, while Nissanka soared 42 spots to 39th following his innings of 64 and 127*.

England’s Joe Root remains the world’s top-ranked Test batter despite modest scores at The Oval. However, his rating has dropped, allowing New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, and Australia’s Steve Smith to close the gap. Harry Brook fell seven places to 12th after disappointing performances.

On the positive side for England, Ollie Pope gained seven places to equal 27th after a century in the first innings, and Jamie Smith jumped six spots to equal 30th after a quickfire half-century in the second innings.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers also made significant gains on the Test bowler rankings. Vishwa Fernando rose 13 places to equal 31st after taking five wickets, while Lahiru Kumara (up 10 places to 32nd) and Milan Rathnayake (up 26 places to equal 84th) also improved. England’s Olly Stone gained 13 places to 74th after his three wickets in the first innings.

In the T20I rankings, Australia’s Mitch Marsh and Josh Inglis climbed the ladder for batters after their series sweep over Scotland. Spinner Adam Zampa moved up one place to seventh on the T20I bowler rankings. Scotland’s Bradley Currie made a significant jump of 20 places to 49th on the same list.

The 2023 ODI World Cup in India generated a staggering economic impact of USD 1.39 billion, according to a report released by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The mega-event, held in October-November last year, was the biggest ever ODI World Cup, attracting a record-breaking 1.25 million spectators.

Tourism emerged as the primary beneficiary, with an estimated USD 861.4 million in revenue generated through accommodation, travel, transportation, and food and beverage. The influx of domestic and foreign tourists attending the matches contributed significantly to this economic boost.

Secondary and incremental spending within the economy also played a crucial role, generating USD 515.7 million, approximately 37% of the total impact. The report highlights that nearly 75% of spectators were attending an ICC 50-over match for the first time, indicating the event’s ability to attract new fans.

International travelers made a significant contribution to the economic impact, with nearly 55% having previously visited India regularly. However, the World Cup also attracted a substantial number of first-time visitors, with 19% of international attendees making their maiden trip to the country.

These international travelers visited multiple tourist destinations during their stay, generating an economic impact of USD 281.2 million. The report also notes that nearly 68% of international attendees expressed their intention to recommend India as a tourist destination to friends and family, further enhancing the country’s global image.

The event also created over 48,000 full and part-time jobs, both directly through tournament delivery and indirectly through the hospitality sector. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice emphasized the event’s positive impact on the Indian economy, stating that it “demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket.”

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes Rohit may be traded to a new team during the trade window. “I feel he will not stay. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni,” Chopra said. “Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him.”

Chopra also discussed the future of Suryakumar Yadav, who has also been linked with a move away from MI. However, Chopra believes Surya is unlikely to leave the franchise at this stage of his career. “I don’t think Suryakumar Yadav will be traded. The Mumbai Indians won’t leave Suryakumar Yadav and I feel Surya also won’t leave either,” he said.

Rohit Sharma’s departure would mark a significant change for MI, who have been led by the Indian opener since 2013. Under his captaincy, MI won five IPL titles, making them the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history.

If Rohit does leave, MI will need to find a new captain and a replacement for his opening batting position. Potential candidates for the captaincy include Hardik Pandya, who led the team in 2022, and Ishan Kishan, who has impressed as an opener for India.

The IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to be held in December 2024. All teams will have the opportunity to retain a maximum of four players, with the remaining players entering the auction pool.

Despite the loss, Root finished the series with 375 runs, adding to his 291 runs against the West Indies earlier in the summer. At 33, Root is arguably playing the best cricket of his red-ball career.

Root praised the England Test team’s performance throughout the summer. “We are constantly learning and evolving as a group, and it is nice to contribute to that,” he said. “It is important we are authentic to what we are as a team and what brings out the best in our individual players.”

With 10,354 Test runs to his name, Root is the only active cricketer with more than 10,000 Test runs. He is also the closest active player to Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 Test runs.

If Root continues to perform at his current level, he could potentially challenge Tendulkar’s record in the coming years. However, Root remains humble about his chances of surpassing the Indian legend.

“It’s a long way away,” Root said. “I’m just trying to focus on the next game and the next series. I’m not looking too far ahead.”

Hokato Hotozhe Sema, a Paralympics bronze medalist, has shared his inspiring journey of overcoming adversity and achieving sporting success. In 2002, a landmine explosion during an anti-terrorist operation in Jammu & Kashmir claimed his left leg below the knee, leaving him physically and emotionally scarred.

“I was mentally disturbed and in deep depression,” Sema recalled. “I never thought I would be like this. I asked myself how I would walk because I don’t have one leg.”

After his leg amputation, Sema faced immense challenges. The swelling and pain made it difficult to heal and walk properly. However, a visit to Pune’s artificial limb center changed his life. The Indian Army provided him with an artificial limb, giving him hope and motivation.

“I have not seen an artificial leg till then in my life,” Sema said. “Indian Army provided me with an artificial limb with a lot of hope. Because of that I am being able to stand in front of you.”

Inspired by others at the center who faced even greater physical challenges, Sema began to walk again, slowly and with determination. “It was like how a new-born child was taught how to walk by holding him,” he said.

In 2016, Sema was encouraged to take up shot put by a senior army official. He quickly excelled in the sport, competing in the National Para Athletics Championships the same year. His rise in para-athletics has been nothing short of inspiring.

At the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Sema secured a bronze medal in the men’s F57 category final with a career-best throw of 14.65 meters. He became the first Paralympics medalist from northeast India and the first Indian to win a medal in shot put at the Paralympics.

Sema’s journey is a testament to his resilience, determination, and the support he received from the Indian Army. He has not only overcome adversity but has also become a role model for others who face physical challenges.

Retired Indian hockey legend P.R. Sreejesh has embarked on a new chapter in his illustrious career as the head coach of the national junior men’s team. In a heartfelt letter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Sreejesh’s contributions to Indian hockey and expressed confidence in his ability to make a significant impact in his new role.

Sreejesh, known as “The Wall” for his exceptional goalkeeping skills, bid farewell to his 15-year international career after India’s bronze-winning campaign at the Paris Olympics. Sreejesh expressed his gratitude for Modi’s support. “Hockey is my life and I’ll continue to serve the game and work towards making India a power in hockey,” he said. “Thank You PM Sir for your faith in me.”

Modi also praised Sreejesh’s humility and grace, both on and off the field. “Various awards, national and international medals that came your way reflect the heights you have achieved. But what has always stood out about you, Sreejesh, is your humility and grace, both on and off the field,” he wrote.

“I am confident that your passion, dedication and commitment will help nurture the next generation of world-beaters,” Modi added. “I want to thank you for your tireless dedication, your remarkable career and for being a source of immense pride for India.”

Sreejesh’s appointment as junior coach marks a new era for Indian hockey. His experience, leadership, and unwavering passion will undoubtedly inspire the young players and guide them towards future success.
