PCB Accused of Political Interference Ahead of England Tests

Pakistan’s cricket team is gearing up for a crucial Test series against England, but behind the scenes, there are allegations of political maneuvering within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Former batsman Basit Ali has claimed that white-ball coach Gary Kirsten is now involved in the politics of Pakistani cricket.

According to Ali, Kirsten has taken over the leadership of a “friendship group” within the team, which was previously headed by captain Babar Azam. Ali alleges that Kirsten has been pushing for certain players to be given extended runs, including all-rounder Shadab Khan.

Ali also criticized the team’s recent Test series whitewash at home to Bangladesh, calling it an “embarrassing” defeat. He questioned the team’s consistency and performance, suggesting that favoritism and politics were undermining the team’s success.

Ali’s claims have been met with mixed reactions. Some have dismissed them as unfounded speculation, while others have expressed concern about the alleged political interference in the team.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has not publicly commented on Ali’s allegations. However, he has previously stated that the board is committed to improving the team’s performance and ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.

Despite Ali’s claims that fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi would not be included in the squad for the England Tests, Afridi was named in the 15-member squad for the first Test.

Ali also predicted that Kirsten would be sacked after the ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan is set to host in February-March next year. He claimed that Kirsten had become part of the political landscape of Pakistani cricket and would not be successful in the long run.

The PCB has not commented on Ali’s prediction regarding Kirsten’s future. However, the board has stated that it is focused on preparing the team for the upcoming Champions Trophy and ensuring a successful tournament on home soil.

KL Rahul: A Talented Batter with Unfulfilled Potential

KL Rahul: A Talented Batter with Unfulfilled Potential

KL Rahul, the talented Indian opener, has showcased his exceptional batting prowess with sublime centuries across various Test venues. Despite his impressive achievements, his career statistics have not fully reflected his potential.

Rahul’s journey has been marked by both brilliance and inconsistency. He holds the distinction of being the only Indian opener to score Test hundreds in England, South Africa, and Australia. He is also the only visiting batter to achieve two Test centuries at Supersport Park, Centurion, a notoriously challenging ground for non-South African batters. Additionally, Rahul is the only Indian batter to score seven consecutive Test 50s.

However, Rahul’s overall Test average of under 35 has left fans and critics questioning his consistency. Factors such as a “confused approach,” “over-thinking,” and “scoreboard inertia” have been cited as potential reasons for his modest figures.

Despite these challenges, Rahul has received significant support from successive captain-coach combinations. He was appointed as India’s 34th Test captain in 2022, but his form suffered during his tenure. However, he has regained the backing of current captain Rohit Sharma, who has expressed confidence in Rahul’s ability to flourish in Test cricket.

Rahul’s versatility has been a key factor in his longevity. He has seamlessly transitioned from opener to wicketkeeper and middle-order enforcer in ODIs, delivering notable performances such as his match-winning century against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023.

As India prepares for the upcoming tour of Australia, Rahul’s presence as a backup wicketkeeper to Rishabh Pant could prove invaluable. His ability to bat at various positions, including No. 6, provides the team with flexibility and depth.

Rahul’s career has been a tale of both promise and frustration. With the support of his captain and the team management, he has the opportunity to overcome his inconsistencies and establish himself as a consistent performer in Test cricket.

Maxwell to Play Shield Cricket Ahead of Sri Lanka Test Tour

Maxwell to Play Shield Cricket Ahead of Sri Lanka Test Tour

Victoria captain Will Sutherland has confirmed that star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will be available for a limited number of Sheffield Shield matches early in the upcoming season. Maxwell, who turns 36 in October, is currently in England with Australia’s ODI team and has not played a Shield match for Victoria since February 2023.

Maxwell’s availability is a boost for Victoria, who are keen to have him play some red-ball cricket before Australia’s Test tour to Sri Lanka in January and February next year. Maxwell was part of the Sri Lanka tour in 2022 and nearly played the first Test in Galle, with his ability as a spin-bowling allrounder seen as an asset in spinning conditions.

However, Maxwell’s availability will be limited due to his commitments to Australia’s ODI and T20I series against Pakistan in November. He will also be unavailable for the first Shield game of the summer against Tasmania as he slowly builds up off a knee issue.

Victoria are also unlikely to have Australia fast bowler Scott Boland available for the first Shield game, but he is set to be unleashed in the game against NSW at the MCG. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Steven Smith are all a chance to play for the Blues in that match.

Sutherland himself will be on bowling restrictions during the start of the Shield season coming off a stress fracture in his back. He bowled six overs and made 36 not out in Victoria’s opening One-Day Cup win over Tasmania on Monday in Melbourne and will bowl again in Friday’s One-Day Cup game against Queensland.

One man who won’t be part of Victoria’s Shield team at the start of the season is Will Pucovski. The one-Test opener has not been training with the group and is set to finish his playing career after a medical panel advised he not continue due to the repeated concussions that he has suffered.

England End Australia's ODI Winning Streak with Thrilling Victory

England End Australia’s ODI Winning Streak with Thrilling Victory

In a thrilling encounter at Chester-le-Street, England’s captain Harry Brook led his team to a 46-run victory against the world champions Australia, keeping their hopes alive in the five-match ODI series. Despite a shaky start, losing openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett to Mitchell Starc’s bowling, England fought back through a remarkable 156-run partnership between Will Jacks (84) and Brook (110 not out) in a rain-hit chase after Australia put up an impressive 304 for 7 on the board.

Rain interrupted play with England at 254 for 4 off 37.4 overs, but they were comfortably ahead of the required target under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, securing the victory and ending Australia’s 14-match winning streak in ODIs.

Earlier in the day, Alex Carey’s unbeaten 77 and Steven Smith’s 60 led the visitors’ batting card. England paceman Jofra Archer claimed 2 for 67. Despite losing wickets at crucial moments, Australia’s middle-order partnerships, particularly between Carey and Glenn Maxwell (30), and later with Aaron Hardie (44), helped them reach a challenging total.

England’s bowlers made early inroads, but Smith’s half-century and Carey’s aggressive batting kept Australia in the game. Cameron Green, who replaced the injured Travis Head, was dismissed for 42. In the following over, Australia’s score of 131 for 3 quickly became 132 for 4 when Labuschagne fell for a duck, mistiming a paddle-sweep off spinner Jacks that was easily caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Smith reached his half-century by pulling a short ball from Jacks for his fifth boundary, having faced 71 deliveries. However, he was dismissed when Brydon Carse made a spectacular diving catch on the boundary off a forceful pull shot from Archer.

Carey, on the other hand, struck Carse through midwicket for one of his four boundaries in a 48-ball fifty that also included a straight six off Jacob Bethell.

The series, now standing at 2-1 in Australia’s favour, will continue at Lord’s on Friday, with both teams eager to secure a victory in the remaining two matches.

Initially in the home team’s run-chase, their supporters might have been concerned when Salt clipped Starc’s delivery straight to midwicket, and Duckett, attempting to play across the line, edged the left-arm fast bowler to backward point.

However, Jacks and Brook managed to turn the game around against an Australian bowling attack that was missing their key leg-spinner, Adam Zampa, due to illness.

Jacks, made a fourth fifty in 10 ODIs but missed out on a maiden century when he uppercut a bouncer from Cameron Green to backward point to end an 82-ball innings featuring nine fours and a six.

Jamie Smith’s hook shot off a Green found the deep square leg fielder, leaving England at 197 for 4 in the 32nd over.

An edgy four to fine third-man brought up Brooks’ maiden ODI century in his 18th match, scored off 87 deliveries with 12 fours and two sixes. His second fifty came off just 33 balls.

Manchester City, Chelsea Advance in League Cup with Rotated Squads

Manchester City, Chelsea Advance in League Cup with Rotated Squads

Manchester City’s heavily rotated squad cruised to a 2-1 victory over second-tier Watford in the English League Cup third round, extending their dominance in the competition. Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes scored first-half goals to secure the win for City, who fielded a team with only two players starting both the Premier League match against Arsenal and the League Cup tie.

Chelsea also advanced with a resounding 5-0 triumph over fourth-division Barrow. Christopher Nkunku netted a hat-trick, while Pedro Neto and an own-goal completed the rout. Aston Villa and Leicester City also progressed, with Villa defeating third-tier Wycombe 2-1 and Leicester winning 3-0 on penalties after a goalless draw with fourth-tier Walsall.

Despite City’s success in the League Cup, manager Pep Guardiola has downplayed its importance this season, stating that he will use the matches to provide playing time for fringe players. “We are not going to waste energy on this competition, for sure,” he said.

Doku opened the scoring for City in the fifth minute, capitalizing on a misplaced back-pass. Nunes doubled the lead in the 38th minute with a low shot. Watford pulled one back through Tom Ince in the 86th minute, but it was too little too late.

Chelsea made 11 changes to their lineup from the weekend’s Premier League victory, but Nkunku’s early goals set the tone for a comfortable win. Villa’s Jhon Durán continued his impressive start to the season with a penalty goal, while Leicester converted all three of their spot-kicks in the shootout to overcome Walsall.

The last 32 of the League Cup is being spread over two midweeks to accommodate the expanded Champions League and Europa League. Manchester United and Tottenham were among those to advance last week, while Liverpool and Arsenal play their games on Wednesday.

IOC and Odisha Secure Semifinal Berths in MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey

IOC and Odisha Secure Semifinal Berths in MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the former champion of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All-India hockey tournament, has secured its place in the semifinals after a 3-1 victory over Odisha in a Pool-B contest. With this win, IOC has assured itself of a spot in the knock-out stage.

IOC, studded with Olympians and Internationals, has played hard and ticked all the boxes in this year’s tournament. The team has scripted its third successive win, leaving nothing to chance. Odisha, from Pool-B, is the other team that has made it to the last four.

In Pool-A, Indian Army tamed Tamil Nadu 3-1 with a delectable mix of aggression and caution. However, the picture in Pool-A is still unclear as to who will reach the semifinals. Tamil Nadu, after its wonderful win over Maharashtra, flattered to deceive against a strong Army unit.

Army was the better side throughout the match, be it in attack, defense, or midfield. Tamil Nadu will rue its chances in the fourth quarter. Trailing 1-3 in the fourth quarter, the host had four back-to-back penalty corners but wasted each one of them.

India Dominate Maldives 3-0, Secure SAFF U17 Semi-Final Berth

India continued their dominant run at the SAFF U17 Championships, securing a 3-0 victory over Maldives in their second Group A match on Tuesday, September 25, 2024. The victory propelled India to the top of the group standings with six points, ensuring their qualification for the semi-finals.

The match began with India taking the initiative, and their efforts were rewarded in the 14th minute when Samson Ahongshangbam connected with a cross from Manbhakupar Malngiang to score a spectacular diving header. The goal gave India a 1-0 lead, which they held until halftime.

In the second half, India continued to press forward, and their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when substitute Hemneichung Lunkim doubled their lead. Lunkim capitalized on a fumble by Maldives goalkeeper Hassan Nasir to finish decisively.

Lunkim proved to be the star of the day, scoring his second goal in the 89th minute with a fine long-ranger that crashed against the net. The goal sealed India’s victory and earned Lunkim the man of the match award.

India’s head coach, Ishfaq Ahmed, made three changes to the starting lineup that played against Bangladesh, bringing in Karish Soram, Rishi Singh, and Malngianng. The changes paid off, as India controlled the game throughout and created numerous scoring opportunities.

Maldives, on the other hand, struggled to create chances and were unable to find a way past the Indian defense. The result leaves Maldives with no points after two matches, while India will face the runners-up from Group B in the first semi-final on September 28.

England Women Cricketers to Receive Equal Minimum Salaries from 2025

England Women Cricketers to Receive Equal Minimum Salaries from 2025

England’s women cricketers have taken a significant step towards gender parity with the announcement that minimum starting salaries in domestic cricket will be equalized across the men’s and women’s professional games from 2025. This move aligns with the recommendations of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report, which called for a “fundamental overhaul” of the pay structure in women’s cricket.

The equalization of salaries will apply to both ‘Rookie’ level, which is being introduced into the women’s game for the first time, and ‘Senior Pro’ level for established first-team players. This decision reflects the ECB’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for young players considering cricket as a career choice.

The announcement comes after the ICEC report revealed that the average England Women’s salary was significantly lower than their male counterparts. The report set targets for equalizing pay at domestic level by 2029 and for internationals by 2030.

In addition to equalizing starting salaries, the ECB has also confirmed that the eight Tier 1 counties in the new women’s competition will have minimum squad sizes of 15 contracted players. Each first-class county is required to invest at least £500,000 on player salary costs in 2025, with a salary cap of £800,000 per year agreed for those clubs.

Emma Reid, PCA Director of Player Rights and Women’s Cricket, welcomed the announcement, stating that it is a “big step towards reaching parity.” She emphasized that the PCA remains committed to achieving full parity across all areas of the professional game.

The equalization of minimum starting salaries is a testament to the growing recognition of the value and talent of women cricketers. It is a positive step towards creating a more equitable and sustainable environment for women’s cricket in England and Wales.
