Suryakumar Yadav’s Controversial Catch Sparks Debate, Shamsi Takes Dig

Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational catch in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup against South Africa in Barbados has sparked controversy and debate. The stunning grab from Suryakumar at the boundary line was so close that it led to a controversy.

Needing 16 runs from the final over, South Africa had David Miller on the strike. The southpaw hit a wide full toss from Hardik Pandya but Suryakumar was able to catch the ball inside the ropes at long-off, realized it just as he went over the boundary, and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch.

South Africa star Tabraiz Shamsi took a dig at the catch in a social media post on Thursday. “If they used this method to check the catch in the world cup final maybe it would have been given not out,” he wrote in a post. Along with the post was a video showing a local cricket match.

The post did not go down well with several social media users, with many saying Shami was ‘crying’ and that he was a sore loser. Then, Shamsi issued a clarification. “In case some people don’t understand that it’s meant to be a joke and no one is crying… let me explain it to you like a 4-year-old child. It’s A Joke,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his desire to “earn a spot” in the Indian Test team, saying that red-ball cricket is a priority for him. India is scheduled to play 10 Tests over the next few months. Although a regular in India’s white-ball setup, Suryakumar has played only one Test – against Australia in February 2023, scoring eight runs in his solitary Test inning. In the same year, he was named as one of the reserves in the ICC World Test Championship Final squad.

With Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, and Rajat Patidar also fighting for a spot, Suryakumar acknowledges the uphill task ahead of him. “There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again,” Suryakumar said as quoted by ICC.

“I made my debut for India in Tests. After that, I got injured as well. There were a lot of people who got an opportunity and have done well too. They deserve that opportunity right now,” he added.

The 33-year-old will return to play red-ball cricket in the Duleep Trophy – India’s domestic tournament – for his home side Mumbai. Suryakumar will also make his appearance in the Buchi Babu tournament.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the third time this year, defeating SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final. This triumph marked their first IPL success since 2014, and former India head coach Gautam Gambhir played a pivotal role in all three of KKR’s victories.

In 2012 and 2014, Gambhir captained KKR to two IPL titles. This year, he transitioned into a mentorship role, joining KKR from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he had also served as a mentor.

Gambhir’s contributions to LSG were significant, as he helped build the team from the ground up. LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka acknowledged Gambhir’s role in the franchise’s success, particularly in the team’s first auction.

“Gautam has played a significant role in building the side’s foundation,” Goenka said. “If you consider our first auction successful, it is only because of Gautam. We got the franchise barely two weeks before the auctions. We did not have an analyst or a research team. It was all Gautam Gambhir’s team. He did everything and put together a very balanced team.”

LSG qualified for the IPL playoffs in its first two seasons before finishing seventh in IPL 2024. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions, LSG appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as the franchise’s mentor.

Zaheer expressed his commitment to serving the team in every capacity possible, including bowling. He emphasized the importance of decision-making and building on the team’s existing strengths.

“It is a team game, so I will be serving the team in every capacity possible, and yes, it includes bowling,” Zaheer said. “When you see LSG, their journey is only three years but they are as comparable to the teams who have played the IPL for 17-18 years. The building blocks are in place and we need to take them forward.”

“We always focus a lot on the group and the team,” Mac Allister said. “We know that when Leo is not there, we have to become even stronger because we don’t have that player who, when things go wrong, can save us.”

“We know that when Leo is there, they (rivals) are a little more afraid, it is normal. We also have players who play in big clubs in Europe and when they see the Argentine National Team, they know that it is not going to be an easy match and that’s what we want. We want to do our best so that the rival has a difficult day,” he added.

When asked if Messi would participate in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Mac Allister said, “If you ask my feelings, yes. I think he will be there. At least, listening to him in interviews or seeing how he trains every time we join the national team, or how he plays, I have no doubt that he could easily be there. But, well, it’s a very personal decision.”

“It will likely be announced closer [to the World Cup] when he sees how he feels. And I hope he can be there. I’ve always said that, for me, Leo, being the best in the world, has the ability to make a difference, even as he gets older,” he added.

Messi has not featured for Inter Miami since his Copa America return, but was recently seen training, leading to speculation that he could be back soon.

“It was a bit of a storm last week,” Draper said. “I played three tough matches there, and then in the match against Holger, I wasn’t all there. I was not only physically tired, but mentally sort of bamboozled by the night before.”

Draper has since recovered from the incident and is focused on competing at the US Open. He is on course for a rematch with 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.

“I’ve played him a couple of times on hard courts, and it’s a different ballgame,” Draper said. “If I do play him, I’ll be expecting a very different Carlos Alcaraz out there than the one I played in Queens’ Club. But I’m looking forward to that battle.”

The US Open has implemented an expanded video review system, allowing players to challenge incidentals like the one that occurred in Cincinnati. Draper believes this will improve the officiating system.

“It’s very easy to see on the slow-mo replay from the side of the court that, in that situation, it was an illegal shot,” Draper said. “But anyone who’s playing the game out there knows it’s not always easy in that situation to actually know what happened.”

Devine is currently recovering from a foot injury ahead of New Zealand’s three-match T20I series in Australia next month. The series will serve as preparation for the T20 World Cup, which will be held in the UAE from October 10 to November 13. New Zealand will name their squad for the World Cup on September 10.

The decision on who will replace Devine as T20I captain has yet to be made. New Zealand’s next series in the format after the World Cup will be against Sri Lanka in March.
