Virat Kohli Lauds Shikhar Dhawan’s Legacy as India’s Dependable Opener

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli has paid a heartfelt tribute to Shikhar Dhawan, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Kohli hailed Dhawan as one of India’s most dependable openers, whose passion, sportsmanship, and signature smile will be dearly missed.

Dhawan, fondly known as ‘Gabbar,’ has had an illustrious career, amassing 10,867 runs in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. He is the 12th highest run-scorer for India in international cricket, with 24 centuries and 79 fifty-plus scores.

Kohli highlighted Dhawan’s fearless debut and his rise to becoming one of India’s most reliable openers. He credited Dhawan for giving countless memories to cherish, both on and off the field.

“Your passion for the game, your sportsmanship, and your trademark smile will be missed, but your legacy lives on,” Kohli wrote on social media.

Dhawan’s most notable achievement came in the 2013 Champions Trophy, where he was named the player of the tournament for scoring the most runs (363). Along with Kohli and Rohit Sharma, he formed an unmatched triumvirate in the international white-ball formats from 2013 to 2019.

Kohli and Dhawan shared a deep bond, both on and off the field. They hail from the same region in West Delhi and came through the system at almost the same time. They were teammates for the Indian team for almost a decade.

Kohli expressed his gratitude to Dhawan for all the memories and wished him luck in his future endeavors. “Thank you for the memories, unforgettable performances, and always leading with your heart. Wishing you the best in your next innings, off the field Gabbar!” he added.

Shikhar Dhawan’s retirement marks the end of an era for Indian cricket. His contributions to the team have been immense, and his legacy as a dependable opener will forever be etched in the annals of Indian cricket history.

Lewandowski's Late Winner Earns Barcelona Second Straight La Liga Victory

Lewandowski’s Late Winner Earns Barcelona Second Straight La Liga Victory

Robert Lewandowski’s clinical finish in the 75th minute secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Barcelona over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Saturday. The Polish striker, despite missing several earlier chances, remained composed to slot home the winner and earn Barcelona their second consecutive league win under new coach Hansi Flick.

Barcelona took the lead in the first half through a deflected effort from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. However, Athletic Bilbao equalized from the penalty spot before halftime, with Oihan Sancet converting after Pau Cubarsi’s clumsy foul on Alejandro Berenguer.

Lewandowski had a frustrating first half, hitting the woodwork twice. But he made amends in the second half, firing home from close range after Raphinha’s cross was parried into his path.

Barcelona dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the match. Pedri, making his first start after injury, impressed in midfield alongside Yamal. Raphinha also played a key role, providing the assist for Lewandowski’s winner.

Athletic Bilbao, despite their spirited performance, were unable to find an equalizer. They remain with just one point from their first two matches.

Flick praised Lewandowski’s resilience and Barcelona’s overall performance. “Especially in the first half, he could have scored one or two goals… but in the end, this is a goal getter, a striker, who scores goals,” Flick said. “The second goal was the winner, three points, perfect.”

Despite the absence of new signing Dani Olmo due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, Flick remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. “These are things we have to accept because we cannot change it,” he said. “We knew when we signed for Barca (the financial situation) is not easy, (so I) don’t think about that. Today we wanted three points and we got it.”

Haaland Hat-Trick Inspires City Rout, but Guardiola Hails Messi as 'Most Incredible'

Haaland Hat-Trick Inspires City Rout, but Guardiola Hails Messi as ‘Most Incredible’

Erling Haaland’s blistering start to the season continued on Saturday as he fired Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town, netting a hat-trick to take his tally to four goals in two matches. The Norwegian’s impressive form has sparked comparisons to some of the greatest strikers in history, but manager Pep Guardiola believes Lionel Messi remains the most exceptional forward he has ever witnessed.

Guardiola, who coached Messi during his illustrious tenure at Barcelona, heaped praise on the Argentine maestro, stating, “The most incredible forward I have ever seen is Messi — I’ve never said something like that.” While acknowledging Haaland’s remarkable goal-scoring prowess, Guardiola emphasized that the Norwegian is yet to reach the same level as Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The numbers with Erling are unbelievable. I think he can sit at the table, in terms of scoring goals, with Cristiano and Messi, that’s for sure,” Guardiola said. However, he added, “Messi is on another level. He is the best player I have ever seen.”

During Guardiola’s time at Barcelona, Messi registered an astonishing 211 goals in 219 appearances, along with 94 assists. He is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and holds the record for most goals scored in La Liga history with 474.

Haaland’s impressive start to his City career has drawn comparisons to Messi and Ronaldo, but the Norwegian is still in the early stages of his development. Guardiola believes that Haaland has the potential to reach the same heights as these legendary forwards, but he must continue to improve his all-around game.

“He has the numbers for Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who controlled the last decade, 15 years, absolutely everything. In terms of numbers, it is that level. So, I don’t know how he does it, but in 100 games scoring 91 goals is something in the Premier League, in this country, is unbelievable,” Guardiola said after City’s opening win against Chelsea.

“I had a feeling that he feels better than last season at this stage. After travel last season, he felt a bit ‘mmm-mmm’ [so-so] or felt he was tired. This season, I think for the Euros unfortunately Norway was not there, there was more rest and yeah, he feels good.”

Haaland’s hat-trick against Ipswich Town showcased his clinical finishing and predatory instincts. However, Guardiola believes that the Norwegian can still improve his overall contribution to the team.

“His contribution is in many things. He had two or three chances and always I had the feeling there is a gap to improve as a football player,” Guardiola said.

As Haaland continues to develop and refine his game, it remains to be seen whether he can reach the same stratospheric heights as Messi and Ronaldo. However, his impressive start to life at Manchester City suggests that he has the potential to become one of the greatest strikers of all time.

Ball-Change Controversy Erupts in England-Sri Lanka Test

Ball-Change Controversy Erupts in England-Sri Lanka Test

A controversial ball-change decision in the first Test between England and Sri Lanka in Manchester has sparked outrage, with Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews labeling it “unfair.”

During Sri Lanka’s second innings, England took a new ball at 4-146, a move that Mathews believes shifted the momentum in England’s favor. With a slender 24-run lead, Sri Lanka had been in a strong position, but the new ball allowed England’s pacers to exploit the firmer cherry.

Mathews, who was batting on 59 at the time of the ball change, was dismissed in the 10th over after the new ball was taken. “It was unfortunate, to be honest,” Mathews said. “Yesterday we were sitting pretty until the ball was changed.”

Mathews argued that the ball change disadvantaged batters on both teams, as they had worked hard to take the shine off the old ball. “The batters are waiting to get rid of the hardness of the ball, and it’s unfortunate that the ball was changed and it started swinging and it changed the whole complexion of the game,” he said.

This is not the first time England has been criticized for a ball-change decision. In last year’s Ashes Test at the Oval, Australia great Ricky Ponting expressed frustration at a similar incident.

England eventually won the opening Test by 5 wickets, but the ball-change controversy has left a sour taste in the mouths of Sri Lankan players and fans.

Ahmedabad SG Pipers Upset Reigning Champions in Ultimate Table Tennis 2024

Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 witnessed its first upset as debutants Ahmedabad SG Pipers triumphed over reigning champions Athlead Goa Challengers. Led by captain Manush Shah, the Ahmedabad franchise secured their maiden victory in the tournament.

Shah played a pivotal role, defeating two-time Olympian Mihai Bobocica 2-1 in the men’s singles. Earlier, he partnered with Bernadette Szocs to achieve the same scoreline in the mixed doubles. Frenchman Lilian Bardet also contributed significantly, beating Harmeet Desai 3-0 in the first men’s singles.

Szocs bounced back from her previous loss to Ayhika Mukherjee by defeating Yashaswini Ghorpade in the first women’s singles. The mixed doubles pairing of Shah and Szocs outplayed Harmeet and Yangzi Liu 2-1, handing the tie to Ahmedabad.

Reeth Rishya had the opportunity to secure the biggest margin of victory for Ahmedabad, but Liu prevented her from doing so. In the earlier tie, U Mumba TT recorded their first-ever UTT win over Dabang Delhi TTC by 9-6. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran upset World no. 20 Quadri Aruna, while Sutirtha Mukherjee and the pairing of Manav Thakkar and Maria Xiao played crucial roles.

Bangladesh Bowlers Dominate Pakistan in Dhaka Test

Bangladesh Bowlers Dominate Pakistan in Dhaka Test

Bangladesh’s bowlers tightened their grip on the second Test against Pakistan in Dhaka, dismissing key batsmen and putting the visitors under pressure. Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan shared five wickets between them, while Nahid Rana chipped in with a crucial scalp.

Pakistan resumed their second innings at 188/2, trailing by 114 runs. However, they lost Abdullah Shafique (23) and Agha Salman (0) in quick succession, both falling to Mehidy. Shakib then removed Mohammad Rizwan (29) and Shaheen Afridi (10) to leave Pakistan reeling at 199/6.

Rizwan, who had been Pakistan’s top scorer in the first innings, was particularly unlucky. He was initially given not out after being hit on the pad by Shakib, but the decision was overturned on review.

Mehidy continued to impress, bowling with accuracy and control. He dismissed Rizwan with a well-flighted delivery that turned sharply and took the outside edge. Shakib, on the other hand, used his experience to outfox Shafique and Afridi.

Nahid Rana provided valuable support, removing Salman with a delivery that kept low and trapped him in front. Pakistan’s hopes now rest on captain Babar Azam and Faheem Ashraf, who are unbeaten on 13 and 10 respectively.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be confident of wrapping up the match quickly. They have a significant lead of 114 runs and a potent bowling attack that has already taken 10 wickets.

Trossard Inspires Arsenal to Victory Over Villa

Trossard Inspires Arsenal to Victory Over Villa

Arsenal’s title aspirations received a significant boost as they secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. The Gunners, who narrowly missed out on the Premier League crown last season, displayed resilience and determination to overcome a stubborn Villa side.

Leandro Trossard, a recent acquisition from Brighton, proved to be the catalyst for Arsenal’s triumph. Introduced as a substitute in the second half, Trossard made an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch just 10 minutes after entering the fray. His composed finish from close range broke the deadlock and gave Arsenal the impetus they needed.

Thomas Partey sealed the victory in the 77th minute with a low strike that found its way past Emiliano Martinez, the Villa goalkeeper who had an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration. Martinez’s error allowed Partey’s shot to trickle through his legs, handing Arsenal a crucial three points.

Arsenal’s victory was particularly satisfying given their disappointing results against Villa last season. The Gunners lost both encounters, including a costly defeat in the closing weeks of the campaign that dealt a blow to their title hopes.

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, praised his team’s character and ability to adapt to Villa’s defensive approach. “We had to change momentum,” Arteta said. “We had a 10-minute gap when we didn’t get the rhythm and they were on top. They had the big chance and David Raya made an unbelievable save. It was the magic moment of the game.”

Unai Emery, the Villa manager, acknowledged his team’s shortcomings but remained optimistic about their prospects. “We had our chance to score and had even better chances than them,” Emery said. “If we score one goal then maybe we win the match. There’s still work to do. I accept the result because we are doing our way and trying to improve. The players will stay calm.”

Arsenal’s victory moves them to the top of the Premier League table, while Villa remains in 13th place. The Gunners will face Fulham in their next match, while Villa will travel to Crystal Palace.

The Indian cricket team is gearing up for a busy Test season, with a two-match series against Bangladesh in September, followed by a three-match series against New Zealand and a five-match series against Australia.

Captain Rohit Sharma has already begun his preparations for the upcoming challenges. Videos on social media show Sharma engaged in intense training sessions with India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. The sessions include rigorous cardio exercises in a park.

Nayar, who joined the Indian support staff last month, has been working closely with Sharma. The skipper’s last Test appearance for India was in March 2024 against England, where he scored a century in the first innings.

The Bangladesh series will be a good warm-up for India before they face New Zealand and Australia. Bangladesh has improved significantly in recent years and will pose a tough challenge.

The New Zealand series will be a stern test for India. The Kiwis are one of the top Test teams in the world and will be looking to avenge their defeat in the World Test Championship final last year.

The Australia series will be the ultimate challenge for India. The Aussies are the current World Test champions and have a formidable record at home. India will need to be at their best to win the series.

The upcoming Test season will be a crucial one for India. They will be looking to build on their success in the World Test Championship and establish themselves as the best Test team in the world.
