The home team endured a shaky start as NorthEast United dominated the opening half. The trio of Alaeddine Ajaraie, Guillermo Fernandez, and Jithin M.S. kept the Mohun Bagan defense on high alert, leading to a thunderous goal from midfielder Mohammed Bemmamer in the fifth minute.

However, Mohun Bagan regrouped swiftly and found the equalizer in the 10th minute through a well-taken header from young defender Dippendu Biswas. The visitors regained the lead in the 24th minute when Ajaraie produced a stunning finish.

Sridhar, a former Arjuna awardee and Lakshya Sen’s former coach, has been training Sindhu since early September at Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Stadium.

Sindhu’s coaching journey has been marked by regular changes in recent years. After winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics under South Korean coach Park Tae Sang, she parted ways with him in early 2023. She then briefly worked with SAI coach Vidhi Chaudhary before appointing Muhammad Hafiz Hashim as her coach. However, that partnership was short-lived, and Sindhu moved to Bengaluru to train under Prakash Padukone. Padukone’s academy, PPBA, brought in Agus Dwi Santoso to guide Sindhu until the Olympics, where she exited in the Round of 16.

Sridhar’s appointment is seen as a temporary measure, with Sindhu’s father, PV Ramana, indicating that a decision on a long-term coach will be made after the European season concludes in November.

Sindhu’s first tournament under Sridhar’s guidance will be the $420,000 Arctic Open in Vantaa, Finland, from October 8-13. She will then participate in the $850,000 Denmark Open in Odense.

Sridhar believes Sindhu is playing at a good level and is confident ahead of the upcoming tournaments. He plans to work on specific areas and assess their progress over time.

Rapport’s experience as Ding’s second was both draining and rewarding. He recalled the moment when Ding clinched the title in the final game.

“The drum roll… you know that he’s going to win the game, because Ian played on for kind of forever,” Rapport said. “Ding was kind of under pressure in that game, and then he played actually reasonably well and he consolidated that and we were all like, ‘oh, shit, this is going to blitz’. And then he played Rg6.”

Rapport expressed doubt about attending the World Championship match in Singapore, but he praised Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi for their contributions to India’s success at the Olympiad.

“Both Gukesh and Arjun are capable of scoring many wins… It’s useful for team events, especially because, in these events, you only need one win,” Rapport said.
