Virat Kohli: 16 Years of International Cricket Excellence

Virat Kohli, the star Indian batter, has etched his name among the greatest cricketers of all time. Since his international debut in 2008, Kohli has propelled Indian cricket to unprecedented heights with his exceptional batting prowess and record-breaking achievements.

Despite stepping down as T20I captain, Kohli remains on track to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary feat of scoring 100 centuries in international cricket. Beyond his contributions to Team India, Kohli has been an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception in 2008.

Despite RCB’s consistent performances, they have yet to claim an IPL trophy. However, the franchise boasts a massive fan base, making it one of the most popular in the league. Recently, Kohli expressed his preference for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as his favorite rivals in the IPL, over five-time champions Mumbai Indians.

On Sunday, Kohli celebrated 16 years of international cricket. His debut came in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla in 2008, shortly after leading India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to social media to congratulate Kohli on his milestone, stating, “16 years ago today, a 19-year-old @imVkohli stepped onto the international stage for the first time, marking the beginning of what has become a truly legendary career. Congratulations to the King on completing 16 years in international cricket!”

In his debut match, Kohli opened the batting with current India head coach Gautam Gambhir and scored 12 runs. He concluded his maiden international series with 159 runs in five matches, averaging 31.80.

Since then, Kohli has evolved into a formidable batting force for India. In 295 ODIs, he has amassed 13,906 runs, including a record 50 centuries, 27 of which have come in run-chases. In 113 Test matches, he has accumulated 8,848 runs, while in 125 T20Is, he has scored 4,188 runs.

Morne Morkel Takes on India's Bowling Coach Role, Aiming to Gain Bowlers' Trust

Morne Morkel Takes on India’s Bowling Coach Role, Aiming to Gain Bowlers’ Trust

Morne Morkel, the former South African fast bowler, has taken on the significant role of India’s bowling coach, succeeding renowned predecessors Bharat Arun and Paras Mhambrey. At 39, Morkel brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Pakistan’s bowling coach and worked with New Zealand and Namibia in the T20 World Cups.

One of the key challenges Morkel faces is gaining the trust of the Indian bowlers, which is essential for effective communication and success in his new position. Ex-South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel, Morne’s brother, emphasizes that earning the trust of established team members will be his main task.

“It goes without saying that being on the Indian team’s coaching staff is probably the biggest responsibility or coaching job out there,” Albie Morkel told Mid-day. “The passion for the sport and the success that the team had in the past makes it a job with no room for error.”

Morkel will collaborate with some of the world’s best bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, widely considered the best fast bowler across all formats. Albie Morkel believes that Morne admires Bumrah’s versatility and ability to perform in various conditions.

“Not sure but Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah,” Albie said when asked about the Indian bowlers Morne admires. “Once again, I don’t know what his exact thoughts would be, but Jasprit is the best all-format bowler in the world. He is very special, and I’m sure Morne would love to work with him.”

Despite not having an extensive coaching resume like some of his predecessors, Morkel’s experience is noteworthy. He has worked with bowlers from different countries and cultures, which will be valuable in his new role. Albie Morkel highlights the importance of his brother’s experience, particularly in addressing the mental aspects of the game, which can be crucial for bowlers dealing with challenges such as injuries.

“It’s a fine line between being too technical and what’s right,” Albie said. “I think the game has changed so much over the last decade. Younger bowlers or bowlers who struggle with injuries probably need more technical work, and after that, it’s about fine-tuning what you have. The mental aspect becomes very important then to sustain longevity.”

Morkel’s appointment has the potential to bring a fresh perspective to India’s bowling attack, possibly unlocking new achievements for the team. His combination of experience, technical expertise, and understanding of the game’s mental demands sets the stage for an intriguing chapter in Indian cricket.

CAS Upholds Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification from Olympics

CAS Upholds Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification from Olympics

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled against Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat in her appeal against her disqualification from the 50kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024. In a detailed 24-page verdict, CAS described the United World Wrestling’s (UWW) rules for punishing athletes who fail the second-day weigh-in as “draconian” but ultimately upheld the decision to disqualify Phogat.

Phogat had cleared the weigh-in process on the first day of her event but was found 100gm overweight on the second day, the day of her gold medal bout. As per UWW rules, wrestlers must clear the weigh-in on both days of the competition. While the UWW allows a 2kg weight tolerance in many international competitions, there is no such buffer at the Olympics.

In her appeal, Phogat argued that she should be awarded a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to her in the semifinals but was promoted to the summit clash following her disqualification. However, CAS dismissed her appeal, stating that it was Phogat’s responsibility to ensure she was under the permissible limit during both days of the competition.

CAS acknowledged that the consequences of failing the second weigh-in were severe, but it emphasized that Phogat had voluntarily entered the 50kg weight category and was aware of the weight requirements. The court also noted that Phogat had previously competed under the UWW rules and had not raised any concerns about the weight requirements.

Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympics was a major disappointment for India, as she had become the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for an Olympic final. Her stunning victory over legendary Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki had raised hopes of a medal, but her disqualification shattered those dreams.

Despite the CAS ruling, Phogat has received a hero’s welcome upon her return to India. Her performance at the Olympics has inspired many young wrestlers and demonstrated her resilience and determination.

Bangladesh’s Historic Test Debut Against India: A Milestone in South Asian Cricket

Bangladesh’s historic Test debut against India in 2000 marked a significant milestone in the development of cricket in the South Asian nation. The journey to Test status began with Bangladesh’s triumph in the 1997 ICC Trophy, which earned them a berth in the 1999 ODI World Cup. Their stunning victory over Pakistan in the tournament showcased their growing talent and potential.

Bangladesh’s domestic cricket infrastructure, including first-class cricket, played a crucial role in nurturing their players. Support from Test-playing nations like India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka further aided their progress. The International Cricket Council (ICC), recognizing the potential for cricket’s growth in Bangladesh, granted them full Test status in 2000.

India hosted Bangladesh’s maiden Test match in Dhaka, with Sourav Ganguly leading the Indian team as captain. Bangladesh opener Aminul Islam became the country’s first Test centurion, helping them post a respectable 400 in the first innings. India responded with 429, led by Ganguly’s 84 and Sunil Joshi’s 92.

Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman impressed with six wickets in India’s first innings. However, India’s bowlers dominated the second innings, dismissing Bangladesh for a mere 91. India chased down the target of 63 with ease, securing a victory by nine wickets.

Since their debut, India and Bangladesh have played 13 Test matches, with India emerging victorious in 11 and two ending in draws. Bangladesh has yet to register a Test win against India. In 2019, the two teams played their first Day/Night Test match in Kolkata.

Bangladesh’s Test debut against India was a testament to the country’s growing cricketing prowess and the ICC’s commitment to expanding the reach of the sport. It marked a new chapter in the history of cricket in South Asia and continues to inspire aspiring cricketers in Bangladesh and beyond.

Yuvraj Singh’s Record Shattered: Samoa’s Darius Visser Blasts 39 Runs in an Over

In a remarkable feat, Samoa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Darius Visser has broken Yuvraj Singh’s long-standing record of 36 runs in an over in a T20I. During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional East Asia-Pacific Qualifier A match against Vanuatu, Visser unleashed a blistering assault on seamer Nalin Nipiko, smashing six sixes and three no-balls for a staggering 39 runs.

Visser’s onslaught began with three consecutive sixes off the first three balls of Nipiko’s over. He continued his boundary-hitting spree with another six from the fourth legal delivery, propelling Samoa’s total to a century. Despite Nipiko’s attempt to contain Visser with a dot ball on the fifth delivery, the 28-year-old remained undeterred. He capitalized on the momentum, smashing another six from the third no-ball of the over. To cap off his remarkable performance, Visser concluded the over with yet another maximum, cementing his place in history as the first Samoan player to hit a century in international cricket.

Visser’s outstanding innings featured an impressive tally of 14 sixes, just four shy of the record for the most sixes hit by a single batter in a men’s T20I match. His game-changing knock of 132 runs from a mere 62 deliveries proved to be the catalyst for Samoa’s second victory in the tournament. This triumph kept their aspirations of qualifying for the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup edition alive and kicking.

Visser’s record-breaking feat has not only etched his name in the annals of cricket history but has also brought unprecedented attention to the sport in Samoa. His performance serves as an inspiration to young cricketers around the world, demonstrating that anything is possible with determination and hard work.

Warner, Smith Sign New BBL Deals, Boost League’s Star Power

David Warner and Steven Smith, two of Australia’s most decorated cricketers, have committed their futures to the Big Bash League (BBL) with new contracts. Warner has signed a two-year deal with Sydney Thunder, while Smith has inked a three-year contract with Sydney Sixers.

Warner, who recently retired from international cricket, will be available for a full BBL season for the first time in his career. The explosive opener has played just eight games for Thunder over the past two seasons, but he is now set to be a mainstay in the team’s lineup.

Smith, on the other hand, could potentially play a full BBL season beyond his Test career. The former Australian captain has not ruled out retiring from Test cricket over the next three years, which would free him up to play more games for Sixers.

The Test stars are set to be available for a handful of games between the end of the Sydney Test against India and their departure for the Sri Lanka tour on January 21. This includes the BBL’s knockout stage, which begins on the same day.

Other Test team-mates Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey have also re-signed with their respective BBL franchises, Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers. Labuschagne will return to Heat, the reigning champions, after India’s Australia tour concludes on January 7. Carey has signed a four-year deal with the Strikers, with whom he has played all 56 BBL games of his eight-year career.

The signings of Warner, Smith, Labuschagne, and Carey are a major boost for the BBL, which is set to begin its 14th edition in December. The league has been struggling to attract fans in recent years, but the presence of these star players is sure to generate excitement and interest.

Juventus and Atalanta Kick Off Serie A with Dominant Victories

Juventus and Atalanta kicked off their Serie A campaigns with emphatic victories, showcasing their attacking prowess and tactical adaptability.

Juventus, under the guidance of new manager Thiago Motta, cruised to a 3-0 triumph over promoted Como. Samuel Mbangula, Timothy Weah, and Andrea Cambiaso found the net for the Turin giants, who dominated the match from start to finish. Despite hitting the woodwork twice, Dusan Vlahovic was denied a goal due to an offside call.

Motta’s Juve displayed a more fluid and attacking style of play compared to their previous regime under Massimiliano Allegri. The team created numerous chances and controlled possession throughout the match.

Meanwhile, Atalanta, despite facing transfer turmoil and injuries, made a resounding statement with a 4-0 thrashing of Lecce. New signings Marco Brescianini and Mateo Retegui made their mark, scoring two goals each. Brescianini opened the scoring with a rebound, while Retegui netted a bullet header and converted a penalty.

Brescianini, a local product from Bergamo, expressed his delight at his impressive debut. Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledged the challenges posed by injuries and transfer requests but remained optimistic about building a strong team.

Five American Men Return to ATP Top 20, Led by Frances Tiafoe

Five American Men Return to ATP Top 20, Led by Frances Tiafoe

American tennis is experiencing a resurgence, with five male players now ranked among the world’s top 20. Frances Tiafoe’s recent success in Cincinnati, where he reached his first Masters 1000 final, has propelled him back into the elite group. Tiafoe joins Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, and Sebastian Korda, marking the first time since 1997 that five American men have simultaneously occupied the Top 20.

This achievement is particularly notable considering that none of these players were born when the previous quintet of Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Andre Agassi, Todd Martin, and Jim Courier graced the rankings. The current crop of American men represents a new generation of talent, with Fritz, Paul, and Korda all under the age of 25.

On the women’s side, American tennis is also thriving. Five American women are currently ranked in the Top 20: Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, and Madison Keys. Taylor Townsend has also made a significant breakthrough, rising to No. 46 in the world after impressive performances in Toronto and Cincinnati. Townsend is one of three mothers currently ranked in the Top 50, alongside Victoria Azarenka and Elina Svitolina.

The resurgence of American tennis is a testament to the depth and talent of the country’s player pool. With a strong pipeline of young players emerging, the future of American tennis looks bright.
