Marseille Snatch Dramatic Derby Win Over Lyon Despite Red Card

Marseille’s resilience shone through as they snatched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Lyon in a pulsating ‘Olympico’ derby on Sunday. Despite being reduced to 10 men early on, Roberto De Zerbi’s side rallied to secure a crucial win that propelled them to second place in Ligue 1.

The match erupted into chaos from the outset, with Marseille captain Leonardo Balerdi receiving a red card within five minutes for a reckless challenge. Lyon capitalized on their numerical advantage, with former Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car heading them into the lead. However, Marseille refused to be deterred. Pol Lirola equalized in the 69th minute, and Ulisses Garcia gave them the lead with just eight minutes remaining.

Lyon appeared to have salvaged a point when Rayan Cherki scored in the third minute of added time. But Marseille had the final say. Jonathan Rowe, who had come on as a substitute, drove forward from the left wing, beat two defenders, and unleashed a thunderous shot that flew past Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri.

The victory was a testament to Marseille’s character and determination. Despite being a man down, they never gave up and fought back valiantly. De Zerbi praised his team’s spirit, saying, “We dedicate this victory to Balerdi. He made a mistake, but we don’t abandon him.”

Meanwhile, Monaco maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 victory over Le Havre. Jordan Teze gave Monaco an early lead, but Daler Kuzyaev equalized for Le Havre. Eliesse Ben Seghir and Folarin Balogun scored in quick succession in the second half to secure the win for Monaco.

Ashwin's Chepauk Heroics Met with Mixed Emotions from Wife

Ashwin’s Chepauk Heroics Met with Mixed Emotions from Wife

Ravichandran Ashwin’s stellar performance at Chepauk, where he claimed 105 wickets in a single match, was met with mixed emotions from his wife, Prithi. While she was overjoyed with his achievements, she couldn’t help but express her disappointment over the lack of attention she received on the first day of the match.

In a heartwarming conversation shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Prithi confronted Ashwin about his absence on the opening day. “Kids want to know what would you give them on Daughter’s day?” she asked. Ashwin responded with a playful suggestion of giving them the ball he used to pick up a fifer. However, his daughter quickly dismissed the idea.

Prithi then asked Ashwin how it felt to perform so well in front of his home crowd. “I don’t know how to react because the first day was something that happened really quickly,” Ashwin said. “I didn’t expect to walk in to bat here and get a hundred. I hadn’t batted in a while. It feels great. Every time I come here it feels special. I don’t know there is some energy in his ground that keeps me going.”

Prithi couldn’t resist a cheeky question, wondering if Ashwin’s performance had refueled his energy levels, as he had neglected her on the first day. Ashwin, however, managed to justify his actions. “Do you think this energy added anything to your energy?” Prithi asked. “She kept complaining that I didn’t see her on the first day. I didn’t. For me, it’s very difficult for me to look out for the family when I am playing. In the middle of the game, but I do make a conscious effort because the children are always asking me, ‘Why didn’t you say hi’?” Ashwin said jokily.

Prithi defended herself, saying that she didn’t always expect Ashwin to greet her, but she felt neglected when he didn’t acknowledge her presence at all. “I would like to defend myself here. I don’t always say hi. When you sit in the seat for 9 to 5 and all I see is Raj waving back at me like I have made up the two days.”

Despite the playful banter, Prithi expressed her pride in Ashwin’s achievements. “But congratulations. A second hundred and a fifer at Chennai. The kids are here they really had a good time. A perfect Sunday morning, it has been a decent weather,” she said.

Ashwin concluded the conversation by thanking Prithi for her support and bringing him good luck.

In a thrilling Serie A derby, AC Milan emerged victorious over Inter Milan with a dramatic late header from Matteo Gabbia. The 2-1 win snapped Inter’s six-match derby winning streak and propelled Milan out of their early season slump.

Milan started brightly and took the lead in the 10th minute through a brilliant individual effort from Christian Pulisic. However, Inter equalized just before the half-hour mark when Federico Dimarco converted a penalty.

In the second half, Milan dominated possession and created numerous chances. Rafael Leao and Tammy Abraham both came close to scoring, but they were denied by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

With time running out, Milan earned a free-kick in a dangerous position. Tijjani Reijnders whipped in a perfect cross, and Gabbia rose highest to power a header into the net. The goal sent the Milan fans into raptures and sealed a memorable victory.

Meanwhile, Roma secured their first win of the season with a 3-0 triumph over Udinese. Artem Dovbyk, Paulo Dybala, and Tommaso Baldanzi scored the goals for the Giallorossi.

Despite the off-field drama, Roma played with determination and secured a much-needed victory. They now sit 10th in the Serie A standings, while Udinese drop to third.

Verstappen Threatens F1 Exit Over Swearing Punishment

Verstappen Threatens F1 Exit Over Swearing Punishment

World champion Max Verstappen has expressed his frustration over a community service punishment for swearing, threatening that it could hasten his exit from Formula One.

Verstappen finished second to Lando Norris at the Singapore Grand Prix, but the controversy surrounding his punishment continued to overshadow the race. The Red Bull driver was sanctioned by the FIA after using the F-word in a live press conference on Thursday.

In response, Verstappen staged a one-man protest by giving only short answers or offering “no comment” to reporters in the official FIA post-qualifying press conference on Saturday. After Sunday’s race, he again limited his responses before conducting a lengthy press conference with some members of the written press inside the Red Bull hospitality unit.

“These kinds of things definitely decide my future as well, when you can’t be yourself or you have to deal with these kinds of silly things,” the 26-year-old said. “I am at the stage of my career where you don’t want to be dealing with this all the time. It’s really tiring.”

Verstappen is chasing a fourth world title this season, but he has said in the past that a long career in Formula One is not on his agenda. He is also keen to explore other forms of motor racing once his current contract with Red Bull ends in 2028.

“F1 will go on without me. It’s not a problem and also not a problem for me. It’s how it is,” he added. “If you can’t really be yourself to the fullest, then it’s better not to speak. But that’s what no one wants because then you become a robot and that’s not how you should be going about it in the sport.”

Verstappen’s comments have raised concerns about his future in Formula One. The Dutchman is one of the most talented drivers in the sport, and his departure would be a major blow to the series. However, it is clear that Verstappen is frustrated with the FIA’s decision, and it remains to be seen whether he will continue to race in Formula One beyond his current contract.

Barcelona's Perfect Start Marred by Ter Stegen's Serious Knee Injury

Barcelona’s Perfect Start Marred by Ter Stegen’s Serious Knee Injury

Barcelona’s impressive start to the La Liga season was marred by a devastating injury to goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The German international suffered a serious knee injury in the first half of Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Villarreal, casting a shadow over the team’s triumph.

Ter Stegen’s injury occurred in the 43rd minute when he collided with Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze while attempting to collect a cross. The goalkeeper’s right knee buckled awkwardly, and he was immediately stretchered off the field. Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed concern, stating that the injury appeared to be a torn ligament.

The injury is a major blow to Barcelona, who have already been plagued by injuries to key players this season. Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo are among those currently sidelined. Coach Hansi Flick lamented the loss of Ter Stegen, acknowledging that it would be a significant setback.

Despite the injury, Barcelona continued to dominate the match. Robert Lewandowski scored twice in the first half, while Raphinha added two more after the break. Pablo Torre also got on the scoresheet for the Catalan giants. Ayoze Pérez scored a consolation goal for Villarreal, but it was not enough to prevent Barcelona from extending their perfect start to the season.

Barcelona now have a four-point lead over Real Madrid, who also won their match on Saturday. Atletico Madrid missed the chance to keep pace with the top two after a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

Laver Cup: Alcaraz Emerges as the New “Man” of Tennis

The Laver Cup, a three-day tennis extravaganza, concluded with Team Europe emerging victorious for the fifth time. The event showcased the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the sport’s elite players, providing fans with a glimpse into their on-court and off-court dynamics.

Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of tennis, made his Laver Cup debut and proved his mettle as the new “Man” of the ATP. His straight-set victories over Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz in the final day’s singles matches sealed Team Europe’s triumph.

The Laver Cup format allows for ample coaching, and the sidelines were abuzz with advice and encouragement. However, Grigor Dimitrov’s suggestion to Casper Ruud to “just hit and go” proved ineffective, highlighting the importance of balancing external advice with players’ instincts.

Despite their intense on-court rivalries, players like Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev demonstrated their ability to transition into teammates and friends. The camaraderie extended to the American trio of Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Fritz, who supported each other despite their recent US Open battles.

Daniil Medvedev’s emotional outburst during his match with Shelton served as a catalyst for his opponent’s resurgence. Shelton and Tiafoe capitalized on Medvedev’s vulnerability, playing with newfound confidence and determination.

The scaled scoring system of the Laver Cup kept the competition alive until the final day. Team World’s 8-4 lead was whittled down to 8-7, setting the stage for a thrilling Sunday showdown. Medvedev and Zverev’s victories in tense match tiebreakers brought Team Europe within striking distance of victory.

Alcaraz’s emergence as the new leader of Team Europe was evident in his on-court performances and his ability to inspire his teammates. His flashy style and personable demeanor made him a fan favorite, and his victories cemented his status as the top player in the world.

Leverkusen Snatch Late Win, Dortmund Humiliated in Bundesliga

In a thrilling Bundesliga encounter, Bayer Leverkusen emerged victorious with a dramatic 4-3 win over Wolfsburg, while Borussia Dortmund suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat at Stuttgart.

Leverkusen and Wolfsburg traded blows throughout the match, with the score locked at 3-3 from the 48th minute. However, Wolfsburg’s Yannick Gerhardt was sent off in the dying stages, leaving his team vulnerable. Victor Boniface, who had come on as a substitute, capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a stoppage-time winner to secure a crucial victory for Leverkusen.

Leverkusen’s Granit Xhaka expressed dissatisfaction with the performance, calling it “a giant wake-up call.” He emphasized the need for improvement in defense, stating, “We can’t keep going with performances like that. We can’t defend so naively.”

Despite the win, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso made significant changes to the lineup that had thrashed Feyenoord in the Champions League. Nordi Mukiele, on loan from PSG, had a nightmare debut, scoring an own goal in the fifth minute. Florian Wirtz equalized for Leverkusen, but Wolfsburg’s Sebastiaan Bornauw and Mattias Svanberg put the visitors back in the lead. Piero Hincapie leveled the score again for Leverkusen on 48 minutes.

In the late game, RB Leipzig were held to a 0-0 draw at promoted St Pauli. Leipzig’s goalkeeper, Peter Gulacsi, kept St Pauli at bay in the first half, but the hosts held on for a point in the second half.

Meanwhile, Stuttgart soared to a dominant 5-1 victory over Dortmund. Deniz Undav scored a brace, while Ermedin Demirovic, Enzo Millot, and El Bilal Toure also found the net. Dortmund, who had raided Stuttgart for players in the summer, were outclassed and disappointed.

Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin admitted that Stuttgart’s win was “absolutely deserved” and vowed to improve their performance in their next match.

Mitchell Swepson Named Queensland Vice-Captain, to Lead in Labuschagne's Absence

Mitchell Swepson Named Queensland Vice-Captain, to Lead in Labuschagne’s Absence

Queensland cricket has undergone a significant leadership shake-up, with legspinner Mitchell Swepson appointed as the official vice-captain. Swepson will lead the side in both the One-Day Cup and the Sheffield Shield when captain Marnus Labuschagne is absent on international duty.

The decision to elevate Swepson to the leadership role is part of a broader restructuring under new coach Johan Botha and high performance manager Joe Dawes. Labuschagne was named permanent captain in all forms, replacing Usman Khawaja, despite his limited availability due to his commitments to the Australian Test and ODI teams.

Swepson’s elevation comes after he led the side in several pre-season games. Botha praised Swepson’s leadership qualities, noting that the group “really would play for them and like what they see.”

Swepson will make his captaincy debut in Queensland’s opening One-Day match against Tasmania on Wednesday. He will also lead the side against Victoria on Friday. Usman Khawaja will miss the match against Tasmania but will play against Victoria.

Swepson has been Queensland’s first-choice Shield spinner for years, but he has limited experience in the shorter format. However, Botha believes that Swepson’s challenge as a spin bowling captain will come in Shield cricket rather than the shorter format.

“I think in One-Day cricket it’s easier to captain as a spinner, because the game sort of tells you when to bowl,” Botha said. “But in four-day cricket is he going to be brave enough to bowl the 17th over of the Shield game on day one. But that’s what we’ll keep, sort of pushing him towards to get himself into the game.”

Swepson is pushing for a place on Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in late January. He played the last of his four Tests in Sri Lanka in 2022 but missed out on selection during last year’s tour of India.

Botha has been impressed with Swepson’s bowling during his first pre-season in charge of the Bulls. The coach is hoping to use Swepson more aggressively this year, even in seam-friendly conditions at the Gabba.

“I’ve been really impressed with him,” Botha said. “His control for a legspinner has been excellent, and you can see why he has played Test cricket in the past. He got 30 wickets last year. So we’re hoping for more of that this summer, and I think in our team we certainly want to use the spinners more and better and earlier in games.”

India Dominates Bangladesh in Chennai, Extends WTC Lead

India Dominates Bangladesh in Chennai, Extends WTC Lead

India’s Test season commenced with a resounding victory over Bangladesh in Chennai, setting the tone for a challenging 10-match campaign. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team asserted their dominance in the opening Test, securing a 280-run triumph in under four days.

This victory not only gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series but also solidified their position atop the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. India’s WTC points percentage (PCT) surged to 71.67, with 86 points from 10 Tests. Prior to the series, India held the top spot, but this win extended their lead over second-placed Australia by 9.17 PCT.

The victory has significantly enhanced India’s chances of reaching the WTC final for the third consecutive time. However, they still require at least four more wins in the remaining nine Tests to guarantee their spot. These Tests include the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur next week, a three-match home series against New Zealand next month, and the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Bangladesh, who had risen to the fourth spot after a historic 2-0 whitewash against Pakistan last month, slipped to the sixth position after this defeat. Their PCT also dropped from 45.83 to 39.29.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on India’s performance in the remaining fixtures. Each match is crucial for maintaining their stronghold at the top of the WTC table and securing a spot in the finals.
