Vinesh Phogat, India’s wrestling star, has finally broken her silence on the heartbreaking disqualification that shattered her Olympic dreams at the Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat, who made history as the first Indian woman to reach a wrestling final at the Olympics, was disqualified on the morning of her event on August 7 due to being 100 grams overweight.

The disqualification sent shockwaves through the Indian sporting community, and Phogat and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) immediately appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a joint silver medal. However, their appeal was dismissed, leaving Phogat devastated.

From August 7 to August 15, Phogat remained silent about her ordeal. But on Friday, she finally broke her long silence with a three-page post on social media. In her post, Phogat opened up about the significance of the Paris Olympics for her and the reasons behind her disqualification.

“During the wrestlers protest, I was fighting hard to protect the sanctity of women in India, the sanctity and values of our Indian flag,” Phogat wrote. “But when one looks at the pictures of me with the Indian flag from 28th May 2023, it haunts me. It was my wish to have the Indian flag fly high this Olympics, to have a picture of the Indian flag with me that truly represents its value and restores its sanctity.”

Phogat added that she refused to surrender to the circumstances. “There is so much more to say and so much more to tell, but words will never be enough,” she wrote. “On the night of 6th August and the morning of 7th August, all I want to say is that we did not give up, our efforts did not stop, and we did not surrender, but the clock stopped and the time was not fair.”

Phogat’s disqualification has raised questions about the fairness of the weight-cutting process in wrestling. Phogat has alleged that she was not given proper time to rehydrate after the weigh-in, which contributed to her being overweight.

Despite the setback, Phogat remains determined to continue fighting for what she believes in. “I can’t predict what the future holds for me, and what awaits me in this journey next, but I am sure that I will continue to fight always for what I believe in and for the right thing,” she wrote.

US Open 2024 to Feature Gaming Zone with Fortnite and Roblox

The US Open, one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, is set to embrace the world of gaming in 2024. The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center announced the creation of the Advantage Arena Gaming Zone, a dedicated space within the Chase Center that will offer 13 playable stations for gamers of all ages.

The gaming zone will debut during the tournament’s annual Fan Week, which runs from August 19-25. It will feature a variety of games, including tennis-themed versions of Fortnite and Roblox, as well as traditional tennis games like TopSpin 2K25 and Tennis Clash.

“It’s incredibly exciting for us to connect our growing presence in the gaming space with the on-site fan experience at the US Open,” said Brian Ryerson, the USTA Head of Product and User Experience.

Fans will have the opportunity to compete for over 3,500 prizes, including free copies of TopSpin 2K25 Standard Edition, in-game redeemables on Roblox, and unique unlockables within Tennis Clash.

“Not only are we reaching more fans by collaborating with some of the most popular gaming titles in the world,” said Ryerson, “the ‘Advantage Arena’ gives our fans on-site a number of new, fun ways to engage with tennis, while also potentially drawing new fans to the US Open.”

The Chase Center, which also houses the Chase Lounge, is located by the East Gate of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Despite the demands of the competition, athletes made time to socialize, often having dinner and meeting other international athletes. “It was a big thing to share a dining room with some of them,” Sen remarked, emphasizing the meeting with other athletes.

He admitted, “As a first-time Olympian, I was nervous during my initial matches, especially with the pressure of performing in front of a massive crowd. However, as the tournament progressed, I regained confidence and settled into my game.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also acknowledged Sen’s performance, reminding him, “You are from ‘Devbhumi (Uttarakhand),’ and you are a celebrity now.” The Prime Minister’s words highlighted the pride of the nation in Sen’s achievements, even without a medal.

In response, Sen shared a behind-the-scenes story, mentioning that coach Prakash Padukone took his phone during his matches to help him stay focused. “Prakash Sir had taken away my phone during the matches, and said you won’t get it until the matches are over,” Sen said.

Sen, made history as the first Indian shuttler to reach the semifinals in men’s badminton at the Olympics. He topped his group with victories over top players like Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie and compatriot HS Prannoy in the round of 16. He also stunned Chou Tien-chen in the quarterfinals. But he fell short of bagging his maiden Olympics medal after losing to world no. 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the semifinal.

Reflecting on the overall support he received, Sen expressed, “It was heartbreaking, coming so close to a win but falling short in the end.”

PM Modi then offered words of encouragement to a shuttler from Almora, stating, “It would have been great if you came back with a medal, but still, you played well. But, people watch with excitement, not just from abroad, but children in our country are inspired by how well you played in the Olympics.”

Sen concluded by expressing his determination to continue improving his game, practicing hard, and serving as an inspiration to young badminton players in India.

The backlash was so intense that authorities were forced to remove the statues under the cover of darkness the night before Eldoret’s city status ceremony. Many who had found the statues “embarrassing” and “substandard” approved of the removal. As of now, it remains unclear whether the statues will be replaced or forgotten.

The statues, representing male and female athletes, were installed at critical roundabouts ahead of Eldoret’s official designation as a city. However, locals and online commentators quickly derided the artworks for their poor craftsmanship, with many claiming they “bore little resemblance” to the athletes they were supposed to honor.

One statue speculated to represent world-record-holding 1500 m runner Faith Kipyegon was particularly mocked for its unrecognizable and exaggerated features. “It is a reflection of our collective mediocrity as a country,” one critic remarked.

Another, thought to be of marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, was similarly criticized and labeled a “joke” by viewers. “Whoever did this will not see heaven,” an ‘X’ user said.

Another user added, “This is shoddy and lousy, to say the least. We can do better than this.”

This controversy unfolded just as Eldoret was celebrating its elevation to city status, a milestone marked by a ceremony attended by President William Ruto. The same day, the President honored Kenyan athletes who had excelled at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kenya had been the highest-ranked African nation at the Olympics, with 11 medals, including four golds.

Faith Kipyegon made history by winning the 1,500m event in a new Olympic record time and also secured a silver medal in the 5,000m race. Unfortunately, Kipchoge could not finish the marathon due to a back injury.

The removal of the statues has sparked a debate about the importance of public art and the need for quality control in such projects. It has also raised questions about the role of local authorities in promoting and preserving the town’s heritage.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is embarking on a comprehensive upgrade of its stadiums to enhance the quality of domestic and international cricket matches. As part of this initiative, the PCB will introduce new floodlights at the National Stadium in Karachi and the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore for the Champions Trophy, scheduled for early next year.

The PCB’s goal is to ensure that smaller venues, such as Quetta, Abbottabad, and Peshawar, are also equipped with light towers. This will allow domestic matches to be played under lights during hot weather, providing a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for players and spectators.

To optimize costs, the PCB plans to transfer the existing floodlights from Karachi to Quetta and those from Lahore to Rawalpindi. Karachi and Lahore will receive new light towers, and the PCB has invited tenders from eligible companies to provide these on a rental basis from August 2024 to July 2025.

“The idea behind this process is to ensure smaller venues are also equipped with light towers for domestic cricket, while major venues like Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, where most international games and CT matches would be played, get towers that ensure international standard and uninterrupted provision of light during matches,” a PCB source told PTI.

In addition to the floodlights, the PCB has also invited tenders for the provision of generators to cities including Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Abbottabad, Quetta, and Peshawar. The PCB uses generators to power the light towers at the grounds due to power fluctuations and load-shedding issues.

The PCB is also implementing extensive facelifts of its stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. As a result, the second Test against Bangladesh in Karachi will be played without spectators. The PCB has allocated funds in its fiscal budget to cover all costs associated with the renovation and facelift of the stadiums.

The Delhi High Court has reinstated the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) ad hoc committee to oversee the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The decision came in response to a plea filed by renowned wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and her husband Satyawart Kadian.

The court’s interim order overturned the IOA’s dissolution of the ad hoc committee, which was formed after the WFI’s elections in December 2023. The court held that the IOA’s decision was incompatible with the Union Sports Ministry’s suspension of the WFI following the elections.

Justice Sachin Datta rejected the petitioners’ request to appoint a retired high court or Supreme Court judge as the WFI administrator. Instead, the court allowed the IOA to reconstitute the ad hoc committee with eminent sportspersons or experts who have experience in dealing with international federations.

The wrestlers had protested at Jantar Mantar last year, demanding the arrest of outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment. They subsequently filed a petition in the high court to annul the WFI elections.

The Sports Ministry suspended the WFI on December 24, 2023, for allegedly violating its constitution. The IOA then formed an ad hoc committee to manage the WFI’s affairs. However, the United World Wrestling (UWW) lifted the suspension in February, prompting the IOA to dissolve its ad hoc committee on March 18.

The court ruled that the UWW’s lifting of the ban was unrelated to the Sports Ministry’s suspension order and the formation of the ad hoc committee. It also stated that the Sports Ministry should not have adopted a passive approach that undermined its own orders.

The court emphasized that the ad hoc committee will continue to manage the WFI’s affairs until the Sports Ministry’s suspension order is reviewed or recalled. It also noted that the Paris Olympic Games are over, and there is no reason for the ministry to delay a decision on the suspension order.

Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella has been indefinitely suspended from all forms of cricket after failing a doping test during the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Dickwella has a history of disciplinary issues, including a ban for breaching bio-bubble protocols in 2021. Despite his talent, his off-field lifestyle has often overshadowed his performances on the field.

The suspension is a significant blow to Sri Lanka’s cricket team, as Dickwella has been a key player in all formats. He has scored 2757 runs in Tests, 1604 in ODIs, and 480 in T20Is.

SLC has stated that the suspension will remain in place until further notice, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to anti-doping regulations and maintaining the integrity of the sport.
