Monfils Sets Up Alcaraz Clash in Cincinnati

Monfils Sets Up Alcaraz Clash in Cincinnati

Gael Monfils’ impressive victory over Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters has set the stage for a highly anticipated second-round clash against world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz.

Monfils, a 37-year-old Frenchman, showcased his experience and court craft in a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Popyrin, who was visibly fatigued after his recent triumph at the Montreal Masters. Monfils praised the conditions in Cincinnati, noting that the faster court suits his aging body.

However, Monfils acknowledged the formidable challenge that awaits him in Alcaraz, who hasn’t played a hard-court match since March. Despite this, Monfils believes that Alcaraz’s “complete” game can thrive on any surface.

“He’s a complete athlete, in terms of speed, endurance, power,” Monfils said. “And then his tennis, of course, is quite complete, too. Backhand, forehand, it’s quite hard to see where you can (hit). He improved a lot on the return, he’s serving big. He’s just a really complete player.”

Monfils compared Alcaraz to the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, stating that he sees him as a future legend. The Frenchman also expressed his admiration for the younger generation of stars, including Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

“For me, it’s always cool to play such a big star like Carlos or Jannik—or of course, in my day it was Novak, Rafa, Roger,” Monfils said. “But to play those youngsters, it’s always a pleasure.”

Monfils and Alcaraz will face off on Thursday in their second meeting of the year. Alcaraz holds a 2-0 head-to-head advantage, having defeated Monfils in the third round of the Miami Open earlier this year.

Vinesh Phogat's Joint Silver Medal Appeal Dismissed by CAS

Vinesh Phogat’s Joint Silver Medal Appeal Dismissed by CAS

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s hopes of securing a joint silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 were dashed after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her petition on Wednesday. Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling gold medal match for being overweight, prompting her to file an appeal with CAS. However, her request for a shared silver medal was denied.

The CAS ruling sparked outrage among the Indian sporting community, with Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia taking to social media to express his disappointment. “Your medal was snatched away in this darkness,” Punia wrote. “You are shining like a diamond in the whole world today.”

Phogat’s disqualification stemmed from her failure to meet the weight limit for her category. Despite extreme measures such as cutting her hair, going without food and water, and working out overnight, she was still overweight. The United World Wrestling (UWW) regulations, which do not consider the physiological and psychological stresses faced by athletes, were criticized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

In a statement, IOA President PT Usha expressed “shock and disappointment” at the CAS decision. The body also lashed out at the “inhumane regulations” of UWW. The IOA said it will continue to explore legal options but acknowledged that the matter may be closed.

Phogat’s disqualification means India’s medal tally from the Paris Olympics will stand at six, including one silver and five bronze. The Haryana grappler, who was making her third Olympic appearance, announced her retirement from the sport soon after the setback.

The CAS ruling highlights the need for a review of the weight-cutting regulations in wrestling. Athletes should not be forced to put their health at risk in order to compete. The IOA’s commitment to supporting Phogat and exploring further legal options is a step in the right direction.

MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina Announce Retirement from International Cricket

MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina Announce Retirement from International Cricket

On August 15, 2020, former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in a characteristically unexpected manner. A post on his Instagram account, accompanied by images from his illustrious career, simply stated, “Thanks – Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.”

Dhoni’s retirement marked the end of an era for Indian cricket. Having already retired from Test cricket in 2014, he chose to step away from international cricket altogether while continuing to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dhoni’s legacy as a captain is unparalleled. He led India to victory in all three major ICC tournaments: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. He also held the Test mace for a period of time.

Throughout his career, Dhoni played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs, and 98 T20Is, amassing 4876, 10773, and 1617 runs respectively. His tally of runs in international cricket included 16 centuries, and he made significant contributions as a wicketkeeper.

Just minutes after Dhoni’s announcement, his close friend and India teammate Suresh Raina followed suit, retiring from international cricket as well. Raina had been a key member of Dhoni-led teams that won the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy.

Dhoni’s retirement leaves a void in Indian cricket, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players. His calm demeanor, strategic brilliance, and unwavering determination have made him one of the most respected and successful captains in the history of the game.

Southern Brave's Title Defense Ends in Disappointment

Southern Brave’s Title Defense Ends in Disappointment

Southern Brave’s title defense in the Women’s Hundred has come to an end, leaving head coach Charlotte Edwards to reflect on a disappointing campaign. Despite a promising start, Brave struggled to maintain consistency, losing six of their eight matches.

The season began with a narrow defeat to London Spirit, followed by a tie with Northern Superchargers. A solitary win against Oval Invincibles provided a glimmer of hope, but Brave’s fortunes took a turn for the worse with a heavy loss to Welsh Fire in their final match.

Edwards acknowledged the team’s inconsistent performances, stating that they failed to put together a complete game. She highlighted the growing strength and depth of teams in the Hundred, emphasizing the need for Brave to improve in all aspects.

While the disappointment of the failed title defense is still fresh, Edwards plans to conduct a thorough analysis of the season’s shortcomings. She believes that a full review will help identify areas for improvement and guide the team’s preparations for the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Edwards also expressed her desire to continue as coach of Southern Brave and Mumbai Indians, despite the latter’s unsuccessful WPL campaign. She emphasized the importance of franchise leagues in the growth of women’s cricket and called for exclusive windows to avoid clashes with bilateral series.

Edwards’ comments align with those of Jhulan Goswami, her Mumbai Indians bowling coach, who has advocated for protected windows for franchise leagues. Edwards believes that three exclusive windows for the WPL, Hundred, and WBBL would allow the best players to participate in both international and franchise cricket without scheduling conflicts.

Coco Gauff's US Open Title Defense: Can She Overcome Recent Struggles?

Coco Gauff’s US Open Title Defense: Can She Overcome Recent Struggles?

Coco Gauff’s recent form has raised questions about her chances of defending her US Open title. After winning her maiden Grand Slam last year, Gauff has struggled for consistency in 2024, losing four of her last 10 matches. However, despite these setbacks, Gauff’s overall statistics suggest she is still a formidable opponent.

In 2023, Gauff had a winning percentage of 76.1%, a hold percentage of 73.4%, and a break percentage of 41.2%. In 2024, her winning percentage has dropped slightly to 74.5%, but her hold percentage remains high at 72.0% and her break percentage has improved to 46.2%. These numbers indicate that Gauff is still playing at a high level.

One area of concern for Gauff is her forehand, which has been a weakness throughout her career. She has shown signs of improvement in this area, but she still tends to make unforced errors from that side of the court. Her serving has also been inconsistent, with her double-fault percentage increasing from 5.1% in 2023 to 8.5% in 2024.

Despite these concerns, Gauff has a history of performing well at the US Open. She has reached the semifinals of the Australian Open this year and has a strong record against top players. Additionally, the absence of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina from the tournament due to injuries or poor form makes Gauff’s chances of winning even more promising.

Overall, while Gauff’s recent form has been inconsistent, her overall statistics and past performance at the US Open suggest that she is still a contender for the title. Her odds of +650 at FanDuel Sportsbook represent a good value for bettors who believe she can overcome her weaknesses and defend her championship.

Morne Morkel Appointed as India's New Bowling Coach

Morne Morkel Appointed as India’s New Bowling Coach

Former South African pace legend Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach of the Indian cricket team, completing the support staff for newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir. Morkel, 39, replaces Paras Mhambrey and will take over from the Bangladesh series starting on September 19. He has been appointed until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Morkel was Gambhir’s preferred choice, having worked with him at Lucknow Super Giants during the Indian’s two IPL seasons as mentor of the franchise. The South African has played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for his country, taking a total of 544 international wickets.

Morkel’s appointment is seen as a significant move, given his experience and success as a fast bowler. He will be tasked with handling the transition phase as Mohammed Shami enters the latter stages of his career and Jasprit Bumrah needs more potent support, especially in red-ball cricket.

Morkel’s biggest challenge will be to nurture the next generation of Indian fast bowlers, including Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Yash Thakur. He is expected to work closely with VVS Laxman and Troy Cooley at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

The other members of Gambhir’s support staff include assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach Ryan Ten Doeschate. India has never had a dedicated spin bowling coach, but Sairaj Bahutule, who is part of Laxman’s team at the NCA, has traveled with the senior team on occasion.

Tim Paine Appointed Adelaide Strikers BBL Head Coach

Tim Paine Appointed Adelaide Strikers BBL Head Coach

Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine has embarked on a new chapter in his cricketing career, taking the reins as head coach of the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL). Paine’s appointment comes less than two years after he retired from professional cricket.

Paine’s coaching journey has been swift. After serving as Jason Gillespie’s assistant with the Strikers last season, he has now taken over the top job following Gillespie’s departure. The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) has opted to separate the state and BBL coaching roles, with Ryan Harris recently appointed as South Australia’s head coach.

Paine has gained valuable coaching experience in recent times. He is currently guiding the NT Strike in the Top End T20 series, and has previously assisted Adam Voges with Australia A, worked with the Under-19 setup, and coached the women’s team.

“I am honored and excited by the opportunity to coach such a well-established and strongly supported club,” Paine said. “I believe the Strikers team and the whole of South Australian cricket has huge potential, and I’m looking forward to being part of taking it forward and winning a few trophies.”

Last season, the Strikers surged into the finals with four consecutive victories, defeating the defending champions Perth Scorchers in the Knockout before bowing out to the eventual winners Brisbane Heat in the Challenger.

Paine’s international career came to an abrupt end when he resigned as Test captain on the eve of the 2021-22 Ashes series. His first major task as Strikers coach will be overseeing the BBL draft alongside captain Matt Short on September 1. The club has yet to announce any pre-draft signings and will have picks 5, 11, 20, and 29.

Rashid Khan, a long-time Strikers player, was expected to return last season but was ruled out due to injury. He will be part of MI Cape Town in the SA20, which overlaps with the BBL in January. It remains to be seen whether he will nominate for the Strikers this year.

The Strikers will be bolstered by the availability of Chris Lynn for the entire tournament after he signed a new one-year deal. Lynn had previously left the BBL early to play in the ILT20.

Barcelona Star Lamine Yamal’s Father Stabbed in Mataro

The father of Barcelona and Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal has been stabbed and is in serious but stable condition, according to Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. Mounir Nasraoui was attacked in a car park in Mataro after an altercation with several men while walking his dog. The dog later returned to the scene and attacked Nasraoui.

The Catalan regional police are investigating the incident but have not yet confirmed it publicly or responded to requests for information. La Vanguardia reports that arrests have been made.

The attack occurred in the Rocafonda neighborhood of Mataro, where Yamal grew up and where his father and grandmother still reside. The 17-year-old forward has become a key player for Barcelona and Spain, making his debut for the Catalan giants at just 15 years old.

Yamal’s rapid rise has seen him become a symbol of hope for Barcelona, who are looking to dethrone Real Madrid as Spanish champions this season. However, the club faces a daunting task, with Madrid having signed superstar striker Kylian Mbappe this summer.

Despite Barcelona’s struggles last season, Yamal’s emergence has provided a glimmer of optimism. Along with Olympic gold medal-winning center-back Pau Cubarsi, the young stars will be relied upon to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and other European powerhouses.

Vinesh Phogat's Olympic Dream Crushed by 100 Grams

Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Dream Crushed by 100 Grams

Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic dream was shattered by a mere 100 grams. The Indian wrestler, who had made history by reaching the final of the 50kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024, was declared overweight the next morning.

Phogat had weighed in under the weight limit of 50kg before the start of her matches. However, by the end of the first day of competition, she had gained 2.7kg, weighing in at 52.7kg.

This weight gain was not due to any miscalculation or negligence on Phogat’s part. Rather, it was the result of a Herculean effort to make weight.

Phogat had participated in 53kg events as recently as the 2022 World Championships. Her normal weight is reported to be near 57kg. Therefore, going down to 50kg was a significant challenge.

To make weight, Phogat underwent drastic measures. She limited her water intake, avoided food, and trained rigorously. After her weigh-in on the first morning, she consumed a glass of juice and several liters of fluid to stay hydrated for her bouts.

Phogat also took light snacks throughout the day to replenish her energy. This added up to an estimated 2.7kg of weight gain.

After weighing in at 52.7kg after her semi-final, Phogat underwent a grueling night. She trained on the treadmill for six hours and was in the sauna for another three, all without food or water. Her coaches also trimmed the elastic at the bottom of her costume and cut off some of her hair to reduce weight.

Despite these efforts, Phogat was still 100 grams overweight the next morning. This denied her the opportunity to compete for an Olympic medal.

Phogat’s story is a testament to the sacrifices that athletes make to compete at the highest level. It is also a reminder that even the smallest of margins can make a big difference in the outcome of a competition.
