Australia Survives Batting Collapse to Beat New Zealand in Second T20I

Australia Survives Batting Collapse to Beat New Zealand in Second T20I

Australia’s dominance in women’s cricket was tested in the second T20I against New Zealand in Mackay, as they narrowly secured a 29-run victory despite a dramatic batting collapse.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Australia’s innings was anchored by Alyssa Healy’s 38 off 25 balls. However, a stunning collapse saw them lose 7 wickets for just 28 runs, with New Zealand legspinner Amelia Kerr claiming a career-best 4 for 20. Ellyse Perry’s 34 proved crucial, but her bizarre run-out triggered Australia’s downfall.

New Zealand’s chase started cautiously, with Suzie Bates scoring a steady 34. However, Ashleigh Gardner and Annabel Sutherland combined to take 4 wickets for 34 runs, squeezing the run rate and closing out the game despite some sloppy fielding from Australia.

Healy’s aggressive start set the tone for Australia’s innings, but Perry struggled for timing. Healy’s dismissal for 38 proved costly, as Australia’s middle order crumbled. Kerr’s wrong’uns proved devastating, dismissing Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, and Sophie Molineux.

New Zealand’s chase was hampered by Australia’s tight bowling in the powerplay. Bates broke free briefly, but her dismissal for 34 left the visitors needing a high run rate. Gardner’s revenge on Kerr and Litchfield’s catch to remove Bates put Australia in control.

Despite some untidy fielding, Australia’s bowlers held their nerve. Maddy Green and Izzy Gaze threatened a late surge, but Sutherland’s catch off Gardner sealed the victory.

Iga Swiatek Upgrades Equipment for 2024 Season

Iga Swiatek, the world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, has made a significant change to her equipment setup for the 2024 season. After using the Tecnifibre Tempo 298 racquet for several years, Swiatek has switched to the Tecnifibre T-Fight 300 ISO.

The T-Fight 300 ISO is designed for user-friendliness and accessible power. Its ISOFLEX technology provides variable racquet stiffness, creating a wider and more predictable sweet spot. The RS Section beam combines a square shape for feel and control with an elliptical shape for power.

Swiatek’s new racquet offers a firm response and a crisp, clean feel at contact. The 16×19 string pattern allows for excellent ball control and spin generation, which Swiatek utilizes effectively on her heavy groundstrokes.

In addition to her racquet, Swiatek has also switched to On apparel and footwear. Her On Women’s Court Tank is made of lightweight, breathable material and features a streamlined design for optimal movement. The Court Shorts have integrated tights for security and a built-in waistband for a customized fit.

Swiatek’s footwear of choice is the On The Roger Pro 2. This shoe provides a wide cut and lower arch profile, along with a carbon fiber Speedboard for stability and energy return. The mesh upper is now lighter and more abrasion-resistant, while the top cap is reinforced for durability. The outsole has an open herringbone pattern for a balance of grip and give.

Swiatek’s equipment changes are designed to enhance her performance and comfort on the court. The Tecnifibre T-Fight 300 ISO racquet provides her with the power and control she needs, while the On apparel and footwear offer breathability, mobility, and support.

Afghanistan Bat First in Series-Deciding ODI Against South Africa

Afghanistan Bat First in Series-Deciding ODI Against South Africa

Afghanistan, having secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, opted to bat first in the final encounter. The decision was made after winning the toss, with the hosts making three changes to their playing XI.

Rashid Khan, the star leg-spinner who claimed a five-wicket haul in Afghanistan’s 177-run victory in the previous match, was rested due to a hamstring niggle. In his absence, Nangeyalia Kharote and AM Ghazanfar will lead the spin attack.

Afghanistan also included an additional seamer in 19-year-old Naveed Zadran, who will make his second ODI appearance. The other two changes saw left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi replaced by Fareed Ahmed, while opening batter Riaz Hassan was dropped for Abdul Malik, who will make his ODI debut.

Afghanistan’s decision to bat first meant that South Africa would once again face challenging weather conditions. Afternoon temperatures were expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius, with a real feel of around 46 degrees.

South Africa, on the other hand, made only one change to their team, bringing in allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo for left-arm seamer Nandre Burger. The batting lineup, which has struggled against Afghanistan in the previous two matches, remained unchanged.

Zimbabwe's Raza Hopes Local Stars Shine in Zim Afro T10

Zimbabwe’s Raza Hopes Local Stars Shine in Zim Afro T10

Australian batting maestro David Warner has set his sights on amassing runs at the Harare Sports Club in the upcoming Zim Afro T10 tournament. However, Zimbabwean captain Sikandar Raza hopes that a local player will outshine the international stars.

Raza, who was impressed by the quality of cricket in the inaugural edition, believes that the second season will be even more exciting with the addition of international players like Warner, Dawid Malan, James Neesham, and Colin Munro.

“We have attracted a lot more international cricketers, with the likes of David Warner, one of the main signings of the season this year,” said Raza. “This is going to be a very exciting tournament for sure.”

However, Raza’s primary goal is for a Zimbabwean player to excel in the tournament. “I’m really hoping and praying that it’s a Zimbabwean who scores the most number of runs, takes the most number of catches, and takes the most number of wickets,” he said. “The growth for Zimbabwean cricket in this tournament is very crucial.”

While Warner is a major signing, pacer Blessing Muzarabani is the only Zimbabwean to be named a Global Icon for the NYS Lagos. Raza expressed his pride in Muzarabani’s achievement.

“Certainly, very happy with that,” said Raza. “Blessing has done really well over the past year and he has suddenly earned that right to be a Global Icon as well. As long as there is Zimbabwean representation, it makes me happy.”

Raza, who was a standout performer in the inaugural edition, is determined to contribute to his team’s success. “The mentality is the same: to win the trophy,” he said. “Cricket is a team game, but filled with individual brilliance, and if I can contribute for the success of the team, it will go a long way.”

Raza also encouraged young Zimbabwean players to learn from the international stars. “Enjoy as much as you can, and learn and grow as much as you can,” he said. “Try and spend as much time as you can with the overseas players that are here, because they only here for 9-10 days. Try and learn as much as you can and you’ll see that you can take this learning in your personal growth and that will help you to become a better cricketer.”

Raza believes that the T10 format has the potential to grow the sport and even make it an Olympic event. “T10 is a format that can definitely take cricket to the Olympic Games,” he said.

Mohun Bagan Aim for First ISL Win Against NorthEast United

Mohun Bagan Aim for First ISL Win Against NorthEast United

Mohun Bagan Super Giant, eager to secure their first victory of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season, will face off against NorthEast United in their second home game on Monday in Kolkata. The Mariners, who drew with Mumbai City FC in their opening match, will be determined to break their winless streak.

NorthEast United, on the other hand, enter the clash with confidence after securing a late victory over debutants Mohammedan Sporting in their first game. They will be looking to continue their winning ways in Kolkata, having defeated Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup 2024 final just a few weeks ago.

Mohun Bagan have a remarkable scoring record in the ISL, having found the back of the net in 15 of their 16 games played in 2024. They have scored in 11 consecutive games, just one short of their ISL streak of 12 matches set between March 2021 and January 2022.

NorthEast United, known for their defensive prowess, have kept three clean sheets in their last four games, including two in a row in their previous matches. If they can keep Mohun Bagan at bay on Monday, it will be the first time they have not conceded a goal in three consecutive ISL encounters.

Mohun Bagan coach Jose Molina is aware of his team’s defensive vulnerabilities, having conceded a 2-0 lead against Mumbai City FC. He is determined to address these issues and secure victories in upcoming fixtures.

“We have to play better and defend better to win matches. We have to focus on that, keep working, stay positive, and hopefully, in the next matches, we will play better,” he said.

NorthEast United coach Juan Pedro Benali anticipates a strong response from Mohun Bagan after their draw against Mumbai City FC. However, he is confident that his team will pose a significant challenge to the Mariners.

“Mohun Bagan haven’t had the best of results in the last few games. They will be eager to get over us and our job is to make it as much as difficult for them. The players are ready,” Benali said.

Rohit Sharma’s Childhood Hero Worship: Skipping Class to Meet Virender Sehwag

Rohit Sharma, the current captain of the Indian cricket team, has always been vocal about his admiration for Virender Sehwag, the former Indian opener known for his aggressive and fearless batting style. One of the most memorable stories from Rohit’s early cricketing days is when he skipped class to meet his batting idol.

As a teenager with dreams of becoming a cricketer, Rohit was inspired by Sehwag’s explosive starts and ability to dismantle even the best bowlers. When he found out that Sehwag was in town, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to meet him. Determined to make it happen, Rohit bunked his class and headed to the stadium where Sehwag was training.

Sneaking out of school, Rohit managed to get close enough to catch a glimpse of his hero. He was fortunate enough to also get an autograph from Sehwag, making the experience even more special. Years later, Rohit and Sehwag would share the Indian dressing room, where Rohit not only fulfilled his dream of meeting his idol but also played alongside him in international cricket.

This story captures Rohit’s early passion for the game and how a childhood hero can inspire a future legend. It highlights the importance of role models in shaping the next generation of cricketers. Rohit’s admiration for Sehwag not only motivated him to pursue his cricketing dreams but also influenced his own aggressive batting style.

Brydon Carse Returns to England Setup After Gambling Ban, Expresses Gratitude

Brydon Carse Returns to England Setup After Gambling Ban, Expresses Gratitude

Brydon Carse, the English fast bowler, has expressed his gratitude to the England management for their unwavering support following his return to international cricket after a three-month gambling ban. Carse’s suspension, which included 13 months suspended, stemmed from placing over 300 bets on matches between 2017 and 2019.

Despite the breach of regulations, there were no indications or accusations of match-fixing. Carse’s recall to the England setup is a testament to the belief that the management has in the 29-year-old.

“They’ve been incredibly supportive over the last period of time,” Carse said. “It’s been brilliant [to be back playing]. The last three weeks have been very pleasing for me to be back playing.”

Carse’s return to the England setup has been met with full backing and support from everyone involved. He has been awarded a maiden Test call-up for the tour of Pakistan, along with his presence in both white-ball squads.

“Rob Key’s been very communicative with me and everyone around the support structure has given me everything that I’ve needed to, to get back playing,” Carse added.

The current England regime believes that Carse possesses the attributes necessary for success at the international level. His ability to bowl with extra pace makes him a valuable asset in the Test format.

“I’m making sure I bowl enough overs in training to keep my loads up,” Carse said of his preparations for the upcoming Test tour. “But the way the schedule is now, I’m fully focused on white-ball and the adjustments will be done in Pakistan when I land on October 2.”

Carse’s role in the England team has been compared to that of Liam Plunkett, a former Durham predecessor and white-ball middle-overs specialist. However, Carse insists that he is not focused on comparisons.

“The only time I hear about that role is in the media,” Carse said. “I’m not getting told that by the coaches or fellow team-mates. It’s not something I’ve really thought about.”

Carse has yet to take the new ball for England, but he has consistently bowled as first change. Despite the changes in captaincy, the message to Carse of what is required from him has remained consistent.

“I’m not going to rule out bowling in the powerplay,” he said. “I’ve had a couple of good spells in the powerplay in these 50-over games so far. And if I can come back [later in the innings] and take wickets for the team – you know, [Saturday] I was probably a little bit expensive to what I would’ve liked – but ultimately I’m going to try and take wickets because that’s my role.”

Carse’s performance against Australia at Headingley was a mixed bag. He claimed three wickets but was also expensive, conceding 75 runs from his ten overs. However, he believes that there are positives to take from the outcome.

“I probably struggled with a little bit of rhythm in my first spell. But coming back and picking up those two crucial wickets to stem the flow of the game at the time. I just kept trucking in and ultimately I think it’s a day where I can take a few positives from the outcome, some good, some not so good.”

Carse acknowledges that the lack of 50-over cricket experience among some players in the England group has been a factor in their recent performances. However, he believes that the team has the potential to turn things around quickly.

“There’s no hiding the fact that a lot of the players in that group don’t play a lot of 50-over cricket and that’s just the structure around English cricket now with the Hundred,” Carse said. “But I think there’s players in that group that have had very good T20 careers up to date and there’s some up-and-coming players where it’s just about adapting to the certain situations quicker. I think that’s probably what we haven’t done in these first two games, adapting to situations. But there’s three games now to really try and turn that around quickly.”

Jalal-ud-Din's Hat-Trick: The First in ODI History

Jalal-ud-Din’s Hat-Trick: The First in ODI History

Jalal-ud-Din’s Historic Hat-Trick: A Landmark in ODI Cricket

In the annals of One-Day International (ODI) cricket, the name Jalal-ud-Din stands tall as the pioneer who etched his name into history with the first-ever hat-trick. This remarkable feat occurred in 1982 during a match against Australia at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad, Pakistan.

Pakistan, after being put into bat, set a competitive target of 229/6, with Mohsin Khan’s magnificent century (104 off 101 balls) anchoring the innings. As Australia embarked on their chase, it was Jalal-ud-Din’s heroics with the ball that turned the tide in Pakistan’s favor.

In a pivotal over, the right-arm medium-pacer unleashed a devastating spell, dismissing Rod Marsh (1), Bruce Yardley (0), and Geoff Lawson (0) on consecutive deliveries. He bowled Marsh, caught Yardley behind with the help of wicketkeeper Wasim Bari, and then rattled Lawson’s stumps to complete the historic hat-trick.

Jalal-ud-Din’s hat-trick came at a crucial juncture, reducing Australia from 127 for 6 to 127 for 9, effectively ending their hopes of chasing down the target. Pakistan eventually emerged victorious by 59 runs.

Despite Jalal-ud-Din’s historic achievement, it was Mohsin Khan who was named Player of the Match for his brilliant century. However, Jalal-ud-Din’s hat-trick remains a landmark in ODI cricket, showcasing how a single over can alter the course of a game.

Bangladesh Skipper Backs Struggling Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh Skipper Backs Struggling Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed his unwavering support for the struggling Shakib Al Hasan, emphasizing that the all-rounder is working tirelessly to regain his bowling form. In the opening Test against India at Chepauk, Shakib endured his most expensive bowling figures in his Test career, conceding 129 runs in 21 overs without taking a wicket.

Despite Shakib’s poor performance, Shanto remains confident in his abilities. “He (Shakib) is doing everything possible to get his form back,” Shanto said at the post-match press conference. “I look at how much hard work a player is putting into his game.”

Shanto believes that Shakib’s intentions and willingness to contribute to the team are more important than his current form. “I look at these things mainly,” he said. “I try to look at everyone in the same way, whether it is, from Nahid Rana to Mushfiq bhai.”

Shanto also justified his decision to not bowl Shakib enough in the first innings, explaining that the pacers were performing well. “I didn’t really need him (Shakib) in the first innings, seeing how the three pace bowlers were doing,” he said.

Former India left-arm spinner Murali Kartik revealed that Shakib had discomfort on his spinning finger and shoulder, having undergone surgery on his bowling finger. Shanto confirmed that Shakib’s finger was taped and that he was bleeding from it.

Despite the heavy defeat in the first Test, Shanto expressed confidence in a comeback in the second game in Kanpur. “We have to really focus on our strengths and believe in ourselves about how we can contribute to the team,” he said.

Shanto acknowledged the importance of the top-order firing in the second innings, but admitted that the batters caved in in the first innings. “I think it was very important learning wise,” he said. “In first innings batting, especially top of the order, we must be a little careful as we need to put in some runs.”

Shanto believes that the team can bounce back from this setback. “I hope they will come back stronger,” he said.
