Rashid Khan Reconsiders BBL Participation After CA’s Afghanistan Series Postponement

Afghanistan’s star all-rounder Rashid Khan has expressed his disappointment over Cricket Australia’s (CA) decision to indefinitely postpone their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, which was scheduled for August at a neutral venue. CA cited concerns over the “marked deterioration in human rights for women and girls” in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan as the reason for their withdrawal.

Rashid, who is currently playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said he was “really hurt” by CA’s decision. “It does hurt you. You do want to play against the best teams and that’s where your cricket is going to improve more and more. You only get the opportunity playing against them [Australia] in the World Cups, but not in bilateral series,” Rashid told ESPNcricinfo.

Rashid believes that the series would have been a valuable learning experience for Afghanistan, as playing against top-ranked teams like Australia is crucial for the growth of the sport in the country. “Recently, we played three T20s against India, and it helped us a lot. We nearly chased 200 [212] against India. Imagine if you wouldn’t have played that, where would the confidence come from? Playing against big teams is huge for us,” he added.

Rashid also questioned CA’s decision to exclude him from the BBL, while allowing other Afghan players to participate. “You don’t want to play with my colleagues and you want to play with me. So what’s the difference? It means I’m putting my colleagues down as well. My country down as well,” he said.

This is the third time CA has chosen not to honor a bilateral engagement with Afghanistan. In 2021, the first Test match between Australia and Afghanistan was postponed, and last year, an ODI series was called off.

Vidit Gujrathi's Title Hopes Dented by Nepomniachtchi Defeat

Vidit Gujrathi’s Title Hopes Dented by Nepomniachtchi Defeat

Vidit Gujrathi’s hopes of winning the Candidates Tournament took a severe blow as he squandered two winning chances against Ian Nepomniachtchi in Round 11. The Indian missed critical opportunities at moves 34 and 37, allowing the Russian to seize the initiative and eventually secure victory.

Gujrathi’s defeat was compounded by losses for fellow Indians R Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh. Praggnanandhaa was surprised by Hikaru Nakamura’s Krause variation in the Queen’s Gambit, while Gukesh was unable to convert a slight advantage against Fabiano Caruana.

Nakamura, who has now won three of his last four games, advised Gujrathi to play solidly and avoid taking unnecessary risks. “The way to play this tournament is to play good moves and not go crazy,” he said.

Despite the setbacks in the Open section, Indian women R Vaishali and Koneru Humpy brought some cheer with victories over Aleksandra Goryachkina and Nurgyul Salimova, respectively.

Gujrathi’s defeat leaves him trailing Nepomniachtchi by a full point with three rounds remaining. The Indian will need to regroup and find his winning form if he is to challenge for the top spot.

Rune Extends Winning Streak to Nine with Dominant Victory in Munich

Rune Extends Winning Streak to Nine with Dominant Victory in Munich

Holger Rune, the defending champion at the BMW Open, extended his winning streak to nine matches with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 victory over Daniel Elahi Galán on Thursday. Despite facing challenging weather conditions that included rain, sleet, and hail, Rune displayed remarkable resilience and efficiency to secure his place in the next round.

The match began under overcast skies, but as Rune and Galán traded blows in the opening set, a sudden downpour forced a 45-minute delay. Upon resumption, the conditions remained treacherous, with hail bouncing off the court surface. However, Rune remained unfazed, donning long sleeves under his Nike kit while retaining his signature short shorts.

Rune’s serve proved to be a formidable weapon throughout the match, as he lost just two points behind his first serve. His aggressive baseline play also kept Galán on the back foot, forcing the Colombian to make uncharacteristic errors. Rune broke Galán’s serve twice in the first set and once in the second set to seal the victory in one hour and 39 minutes.

“It was very cold, I think we all feel it,” Rune joked on court after the match. “I’m used to it; I’m from Denmark, so it’s ok! It’s great to finish in two sets and nice to be back in Munich, so I’m enjoying it.”

Rune’s victory sets up a potential clash with Yannick Hanfmann or Swiss qualifier Marc-Andrea Hüsler in the next round. Hüsler holds a surprising 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Rune, having won their first two matches in 2022.

Rune is aiming to become the first player to win three consecutive titles at the BMW Open since Thomas Muster in 1993-1995. His impressive form and resilience in challenging conditions suggest that he is well-positioned to achieve this feat.

Casper Ruud Surges to Wins Lead on Men's Tour, Tops Both Men and Women

Casper Ruud Surges to Wins Lead on Men’s Tour, Tops Both Men and Women

Casper Ruud’s remarkable winning streak continues to soar, as the Norwegian sensation has emerged as the undisputed wins leader on the men’s tour this year. With his victory over Jordan Thompson in the third round of the ATP 500 Barcelona Open, Ruud notched his 26th win of the season, surpassing Jannik Sinner’s previous tally of 25.

Ruud’s triumph in Monte Carlo last weekend, where he stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, marked a significant milestone in his career. It was his first victory over a top-ranked opponent and propelled him into the spotlight as a rising star in the tennis world.

The 23-year-old’s dominance on clay is particularly impressive, as he has won 17 of his 26 matches on the surface this year. His consistent performances have earned him a place among the top contenders for the upcoming French Open, where he will be aiming to make a deep run.

Ruud’s success is not limited to the men’s tour. He has also established himself as the overall wins leader among both men and women this year. Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina are tied for the most wins on the women’s tour with 22 each, but Ruud’s 26 victories put him ahead of the pack.

The Norwegian’s impressive form has been attributed to his relentless work ethic and unwavering determination. He has spent countless hours on the practice court, honing his skills and developing his game. His dedication and commitment have paid off, as he continues to climb the rankings and establish himself as one of the most promising players in the sport.

As the season progresses, Ruud will be looking to maintain his winning ways and add more titles to his growing collection. With his exceptional talent and unwavering focus, he is poised to make a significant impact on the tennis world in the years to come.

Short Shorts Take Over Tennis: A Fashion Revolution or a Wardrobe Malfunction Waiting to Happen?

Short Shorts Take Over Tennis: A Fashion Revolution or a Wardrobe Malfunction Waiting to Happen?

The Rise of Short Shorts in Tennis: A Fashion Revolution

In the world of tennis, fashion has always played a significant role, with players showcasing their style on and off the court. However, the latest trend in tennis attire has sparked a heated debate: the rise of vanishingly short shorts.

Pioneered by rising star Holger Rune, the short shorts trend has taken the ATP tour by storm. Rune, known for his bold fashion choices, has embraced the trend with gusto, sporting inseams that barely cover his thighs. While some players have embraced the look, others have expressed skepticism or even disapproval.

Rafael Nadal, a tennis icon known for his long shorts, has acknowledged the trend but remains hesitant to adopt it. “I think five inches is pretty good,” he said of his inseam length. “I don’t know how long these are, but they’re around five.”

Aryna Sabalenka, a top-ranked women’s player, has expressed her support for the trend, saying, “I want to see that! Please!” Ben Shelton, another rising star, agrees, saying, “You guys know I love that.”

However, not everyone is convinced. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, and Alex de Minaur have all expressed reservations about the trend. “It looks funny. It’s not my style,” said Tsitsipas.

Arthur Fils, a young French player, hedges his opinion, saying, “[Holger] likes it but for us, it’s a little bit weird, let’s say.”

Madison Keys, a top-ranked American player, has raised concerns about the potential for wardrobe malfunctions, saying, “Sometimes they’re a little short to where the boys are cheeking. It’s just a little bit a lot.”

The Great Shorts Debate has sparked a lively discussion among tennis fans and players alike. Some argue that the trend is a refreshing departure from traditional tennis attire, while others believe it is inappropriate or unprofessional.

As the trend continues to gain traction, it remains to be seen whether it will become a permanent fixture in tennis fashion or fade away as a passing fad. However, one thing is for sure: the short shorts trend has ignited a passionate debate about the intersection of fashion and sport.

Rohit Sharma Recalls Fan Incident, Praises Rishabh Pant's Humor

Rohit Sharma Recalls Fan Incident, Praises Rishabh Pant’s Humor

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma recently shared his experience of a fan entering the field during their match against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium. Sharma revealed that he was initially startled by the incident but handled it calmly.

“I was setting up the field at the slips when this guy suddenly stood up next to me,” Sharma said. “I was a little scared honestly.”

The fan, who identified himself as a big fan, asked for a hug. Sharma obliged but warned him against such behavior in the future.

Sharma also spoke about his admiration for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, calling him “one crazy guy.”

“He’s the person who makes me laugh the most,” Sharma said. “He’s got his way of doing things which is what I like about him.”

Sharma praised Pant’s resilience after recovering from a serious accident last year.

“I was disappointed for him when he missed a year and a half because of that incident,” Sharma said. “But I’m glad he’s back on the field.”

In the match against Chennai Super Kings, Sharma became the first Indian to smash 500 sixes in T20 cricket. He is now fourth on the all-time list behind Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, and Andre Russell.

In six matches this IPL season, Sharma has scored 261 runs at an average of 52.20 and a strike rate of over 167, including a century.

Lucknow Super Giants Face Chennai Super Kings in Crucial Clash

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will lock horns in a pivotal Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 encounter at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday.

LSG, who had won three consecutive games, have suffered back-to-back defeats against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Their batting has been a concern, with Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul, and Marcus Stoinis struggling for consistency.

CSK, on the other hand, have regained their winning ways with two consecutive victories after two losses. Their fast bowlers have been impressive, while their batters have contributed in high-scoring matches.

The pitch in Lucknow is expected to favor pace and bounce, which could benefit both teams’ fast bowlers. LSG will be keen to utilize Ravi Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya effectively against the in-form Shivam Dube.

LSG may consider bringing in Mayank Yadav as an Impact sub for de Kock, while CSK could opt for Moeen Ali in place of Daryl Mitchell.

Deepak Hooda, who has struggled for form this season, will be under pressure to perform at No. 3 for LSG. Mitchell, who has yet to make a significant impact for CSK, will be eager to prove his worth.

CSK’s bowlers have been exceptional in the middle overs, conceding just 7.03 runs per over. Matheesha Pathirana has dismissed Nicholas Pooran three times in three T20 meetings, which could be a key factor in the match.

LSG assistant coach Lance Klusener has urged his team to show more intent with the bat, while CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has emphasized the importance of backing players despite fluctuations in form.

Punjab Kings Triumph Over Mumbai Indians in IPL Clash

Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) faced off in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Thursday, with PBKS winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Shikhar Dhawan’s absence due to a shoulder injury meant that Sam Curran continued to lead the team.

PBKS made one change to their lineup, bringing in Rilee Rossouw in place of Jonny Bairstow. Atharva Taide also missed out. MI, on the other hand, fielded an unchanged playing XI.

Punjab Kings:

* Rilee Rossouw

* Jitesh Sharma (wk)
* Liam Livingstone
* Shashank Singh
* Ashutosh Sharma
* Harpreet Brar
* Harshal Patel

Mumbai Indians:

* Suryakumar Yadav
* Tilak Varma
* Hardik Pandya (c)

* Romario Shepherd

The match began with MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan putting on a solid partnership. However, PBKS bowlers managed to break through the defense, with Kagiso Rabada dismissing Sharma for 24. Kishan followed soon after, caught by Liam Livingstone off the bowling of Harpreet Brar.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma then steadied the MI innings, but both fell in quick succession to Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh, respectively. Hardik Pandya and Tim David attempted to rebuild the innings, but they too were dismissed by Patel and Rabada.

MI’s middle order struggled to make an impact, with only Romario Shepherd (25) and Mohammad Nabi (22) reaching double figures. The team was eventually bowled out for 131 in 19.3 overs.

In response, PBKS openers Rilee Rossouw and Prabhsimran Singh got off to a solid start, putting on 47 runs for the first wicket. Rossouw was particularly impressive, hitting three sixes and two fours in his 43-run knock.

After Rossouw’s dismissal, Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma continued the momentum, adding 42 runs for the second wicket. Livingstone fell for 22, but Sharma remained unbeaten on 30, guiding PBKS to a comfortable victory with 2.4 overs to spare.

Indian Wrestlers Stranded in Dubai, Olympic Hopes in Jeopardy

Indian Wrestlers Stranded in Dubai, Olympic Hopes in Jeopardy

Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia and Sujeet Kalkal face a race against time to participate in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, due to flight cancellations caused by heavy rains in Dubai. The duo, along with Punia’s coach Kamal Malikov and physiotherapist Shubham Gupta, arrived in Dubai from Dagestan, Russia, on Tuesday evening but have been stranded at the airport since their flight to Bishkek was canceled.

Punia, who competes in the 86kg class, and Kalkal, who fights in the 65kg category, were in high spirits and confident of securing Olympic quotas. However, their plans have been thrown into disarray by the flight disruptions.

“It’s really unfortunate that they are in such a mess. They were raring to go to Bishkek,” said Dayanand Kalkal, Sujeet’s father and coach.

The wrestlers have been forced to spend nights on the airport floor and their diet has been severely compromised. They are surviving on sandwiches and bread, which is not ideal for their weight management.

“Punia was 4-5kgs overweight as on Tuesday and he is trying his best to cut the extra kilos. They had planned to reach Bishkek two days before the trials which would have given him enough time to meet the weight,” said Lalit Kumar, Punia’s coach.

Unable to train properly, the duo has resorted to using a treadmill at the airport for cardiovascular workouts.

If they manage to board a flight on Thursday, they will arrive in Bishkek early Friday morning and will have to rush to the competition venue for weigh-ins scheduled at 8am. The bouts will follow later in the day.

“Even if they make the weigh-in, expecting them to make the final and earn a quota will be too much,” said Dayanand.

The wrestlers considered flying to India and then taking a direct flight to Bishkek, but all flights to India were delayed by at least six hours.

Other Indian wrestlers, including Aman Sehrawat (57kg) and Vinesh Phogat (50kg), have already reached Bishkek. So far, India has only one Paris quota in wrestling, won by Antim Panghal in the 53kg division.

Raman Subba Row, England Cricket Legend, Passes Away at 92

Raman Subba Row, England Cricket Legend, Passes Away at 92

Raman Subba Row, a legendary figure in English cricket, passed away at the age of 92. Subba Row’s illustrious career spanned playing, administration, and match refereeing.

As an opener for England, Subba Row played 13 Tests between 1958 and 1961, amassing three centuries and averaging an impressive 46.85. Despite his early retirement from international cricket at the age of 29, he remained deeply involved in the sport.

Subba Row’s post-playing career was equally remarkable. He founded a successful public relations firm while maintaining close ties to cricket. He served as chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club and played a pivotal role in establishing the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB), the forerunner of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Prior to his passing, Subba Row held the distinction of being England’s oldest living men’s Test cricketer. ECB Chair Richard Thompson expressed deep sadness at his passing, acknowledging his immense contributions to the sport.

Born in Streatham, Subba Row made his Surrey debut in 1953, contributing to the team’s remarkable run of seven consecutive County Championships. He later joined Northamptonshire in 1955 and became captain in 1958, earning his England debut against New Zealand that same year.

A finger injury prevented him from participating in the 1958-59 Ashes series, but he returned to the side in 1961 for the visit of Australia. Subba Row scored centuries in the first and fifth Tests, helping England secure a 2-2 draw.

Overall, Subba Row’s first-class career spanned ten years and 260 matches, during which he accumulated over 14,000 runs and claimed 87 wickets with his legspin.

After retiring from playing, Subba Row became a key figure in developing the commercial side of Surrey and The Oval. He also played a leading role in the foundation of the TCCB, serving as its chairman from 1985 to 1990. Additionally, he managed England’s tour to India and Sri Lanka in 1981-82.

In recognition of his services to cricket, Subba Row was awarded a CBE in 1991. He went on to serve as an ICC match referee from 1992 to 2001, overseeing 41 Tests and 119 ODIs.

ICC General Manager of Cricket Wasim Khan expressed condolences on behalf of the organization, acknowledging Subba Row’s contributions as a player, administrator, and match referee.
