IPL to Discuss Impact Player Rule, Uncapped Retentions, and Overseas Player Issues

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to hold a crucial meeting with its ten franchises on Wednesday to discuss several key issues, including the future of the Impact Player rule and the retention of uncapped players.

Impact Player Rule:

Introduced in IPL 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to field an additional specialist batter or bowler based on the game situation. While it has led to higher scores, especially in the powerplay, some experts and franchises believe it may hinder the development of all-rounders. The meeting will consider whether to abolish or retain the rule.

Uncapped Player Retentions:

Ahead of the 2022 mega auction, franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of two uncapped Indian players. However, with these players performing consistently, franchises are seeking to increase the number of uncapped retentions or create a special allowance within the main retention pool for them.

Incremental Performance Pay:

The IPL is considering introducing incremental performance pay for players who have improved their stature since being retained at their base price. However, franchises have raised concerns about players who sit on the bench. They suggest a discretionary incentive pot that franchises can use to reward performers.

Overseas Players:

Franchises have proposed removing restrictions on the number of overseas players they can retain within the retention cap. They also believe overseas players have exploited mini auctions to secure record sums of money. The IPL is considering making it mandatory for overseas players to register for mega auctions and imposing a bidding cap at mini auctions.

Other Proposals:

* Holding the mega auction every five years instead of three.
* Reinstating the right-to-match (RTM) card option at auctions.
* Addressing the availability of overseas players.
* Determining the total number of retentions.

The IPL will consider all these proposals at the meeting, but it is unclear whether final decisions will be announced immediately.

India’s Olympic shooting woes continued on Tuesday as trap shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman failed to qualify for the final round, finishing 21st among 30 marksmen. Despite shooting two perfect scores of 25 in the last two qualification rounds, Tondaiman’s aggregate score of 118/125 fell short of the top-six shooters who shot 123 each.

Tondaiman, 37, had a disappointing start to the qualification round on Monday, shooting 22, 25, and 21. However, he rebounded with two perfect-25s on Tuesday, but it was too little too late.

In the women’s trap event, Rajeshwari Kumari and Shreyasi Singh also struggled. Rajeshwari shot 68 out of 75 over three rounds of qualification on Day 1, while Shreyasi was further down at 22nd. The two will play two more rounds of qualification on Wednesday before the top-six finalists are decided.

Meanwhile, pistol shooter Manu Bhaker added a second bronze to her kitty in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, partnering with Sarabjot Singh.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for Pakistan cricket, as the team embarks on a packed schedule in the coming months. They face Bangladesh in a two-Test series in August, followed by a three-Test tour of England in October. The year ends with a two-Test series in South Africa over Christmas and New Year’s.

In addition to these international commitments, Pakistan will host a triangular ODI series with South Africa and New Zealand, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and an eight-match white-ball series in New Zealand in March 2025. The domestic schedule has also been expanded, with three new tournaments added to the calendar.

Younis’s appointment is expected to bring stability and expertise to the PCB’s cricketing operations. He has previously served as bowling or assistant coach across three stints with the Pakistan side, as well as head coach twice. His last assignment with the team was as bowling coach under Misbah-ul-Haq’s coaching regime after the 2019 World Cup.

However, this new role will be the first time Younis takes on such a broad remit. He will be tasked with balancing the demands of Pakistan’s international schedule with the increasing popularity of T20 leagues worldwide, which has led to a growing demand for Pakistani players.

The PCB has been without a chief executive officer since Wasim Khan left the board under Ramiz Raja’s tenure as PCB chairman. Raja folded the executive role into the chairmanship, but PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is keen to appoint a former cricketer to take over cricketing matters, leaving him to focus on the running of the board.

Younis’s appointment is expected to be finalized soon, although a few issues still need to be resolved. The exact nature of his role may change once the appointment is made permanent, with the possibility of a title similar to that of Robert Key, managing director at the ECB.

Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by competing in the round of 16 of her event while seven months pregnant. The 26-year-old’s remarkable achievement highlights the challenges and triumphs of balancing motherhood and elite sports.

Hafez’s journey to the Olympics began in 2014 when she joined the Egyptian National Senior Women’s Sabre Fencing Team. In 2015, she claimed her first victory at the Egyptian Senior Women’s Sabre National Republic Competition. Her Olympic debut came at the 2016 Rio Games, where she qualified through the African zonal qualification.

In 2021, Hafez secured a spot in the Tokyo Olympics. Throughout her career, she has earned numerous accolades, including a silver medal at the 2018 African Zonal Championship and bronze medals in 2014 and 2019. She also claimed a bronze medal at the Belgium Tournoi satellite.

The Paris Games held special significance for Hafez, who was already a three-time Olympian. “This specific Olympics was different,” she said. “Three times *Olympian* but this time carrying a little Olympian one!”

Hafez’s pregnancy presented both physical and emotional challenges. “The rollercoaster of pregnancy is tough on its own, but having to fight to keep the balance of life & sports was nothing short of strenuous, however worth it,” she said.

Despite the challenges, Hafez remained determined to compete at the highest level. She won her first match 15-13 against USA’s Elizabeth Tartakovsky but was eventually knocked out in the round of 16 by South Korea’s Jeon Hayoung.

Hafez’s achievement is a testament to her resilience and dedication. She has inspired countless women around the world by demonstrating that it is possible to pursue both motherhood and elite sports.
