Saifuddin Returns as Bangladesh Announces Squad for Zimbabwe T20Is

Bangladesh has announced its squad for the first three T20Is of the five-match series against Zimbabwe, with Mohammad Saifuddin making a comeback. The squad also includes left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam, allrounder Afif Hossain, and opening batters Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain.

Saifuddin, who last played T20Is for Bangladesh in October 2022, has recovered from a back injury that sidelined him for several months. He impressed during the recent Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), taking 15 wickets in nine matches for Fortune Barishal, who won their maiden BPL title.

Tanzid, a left-handed opener, has earned his maiden T20I call-up after playing 15 ODIs since his debut last year. He had a decent BPL campaign but was not part of the T20Is against Sri Lanka last month.

Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan are notable absentees from the squad for the first three matches. Shakib is expected to return to Dhaka on April 30 and may play a Dhaka Premier League match before joining the squad for the remaining two matches. Mustafizur is set to arrive on May 2 after his IPL stint and will undergo a fitness assessment before being considered for the final two T20Is in Dhaka.

Anamul Haque, Taijul Islam, and Mohammad Naim have been left out from the squad that played T20Is against Sri Lanka, while Soumya Sarkar is still recovering from a knee injury.

The first three T20Is will be played in Chattogram on May 3, 5, and 7, before the action moves to Dhaka for the last two games on May 10 and 12.

Alex Ovechkin Shut Down in Playoff Sweep, Future Uncertain

Alex Ovechkin Shut Down in Playoff Sweep, Future Uncertain

Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s second-highest goal scorer in regular season history, has faced criticism for his playoff performances. Despite winning the Stanley Cup in 2018, Ovechkin has been held without a goal or assist in a playoff series for the first time in his career. In the recent first-round sweep by the New York Rangers, Ovechkin managed only five shots on net.

Ovechkin acknowledged his poor performance after the Game 4 loss. “I didn’t play well,” he said. “I don’t have that kind of touch. I try to find a different way to put the puck in.”

The Rangers’ suffocating defense made it difficult for Ovechkin to create scoring chances. New York’s Vincent Trocheck poked away Ovechkin’s best opportunity in Game 4, and the Russian superstar was largely neutralized throughout the series.

“He’s been doing it for so long,” Trocheck said. “He’s arguably one of the best, if not the best, goal-scorers of all-time. We had to pay a little bit more attention to him on the penalty kill. Obviously, we’re extremely focused on him.”

Rangers winger Artemi Panarin remained tight-lipped about the team’s strategy for shutting down Ovechkin. “It’s a secret,” he said.

Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers’ goaltender, also played a key role in limiting Ovechkin’s impact. “The defense was awesome,” Shesterkin said. “All four games, they played in front of him and didn’t let him do anything.”

At 38 years old, Ovechkin’s future in the NHL playoffs is uncertain. Washington missed the playoffs last year, and with an aging core, it’s possible that this was Ovechkin’s final postseason appearance.

“I hope I’m still going to get a couple chances,” he said.

Irfan Pathan Defends Virat Kohli's Inclusion in T20 World Cup Squad

Irfan Pathan Defends Virat Kohli’s Inclusion in T20 World Cup Squad

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has vehemently defended the inclusion of Virat Kohli in India’s T20 World Cup squad, dismissing concerns about his recent form.

Pathan emphasized Kohli’s exceptional international record, highlighting his average of around 50 and strike rate of 137 in T20 cricket. He argued that these numbers translate to a high-quality performance, with a strike rate approaching 190.

Pathan also pointed to Kohli’s match-winning abilities, recalling his pivotal role in India’s victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He stressed the importance of experience, especially in challenging conditions like those expected in the West Indies and the USA.

“At such a time when there will be World Cup in West Indies and America, you will need the experience,” Pathan said. “In my mind, such a question will never come that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should not be part of the World Cup team.”

Pathan’s comments come amid ongoing debates about Kohli’s place in the T20 team following his struggles in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Pathan believes that Kohli’s international record and experience make him an indispensable asset for India.

Despite RCB’s recent victory over Gujarat Titans in the IPL, the team remains at the bottom of the standings. However, Pathan’s defense of Kohli suggests that the former Indian captain remains a key figure in the team’s plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

The Distance a Batter Travels When Running a Run in Cricket: A Puzzle

The Distance a Batter Travels When Running a Run in Cricket: A Puzzle

The Distance a Batter Travels When Running a Run in Cricket

In cricket, the distance a batter travels when running a run is not the full length of the pitch (22 yards). Instead, it is the distance between the two creases, which is 58 feet. However, even this distance is not always traveled in its entirety. The run is completed the moment the batter grounds his or her bat across the crease.

When batters run two, things happen differently. Each batter runs towards the opposite end, stretches the bat across the crease, and then turns back to their original end. The first run is completed after running some distance less than 58 feet. Taller cricketers can stretch their bat earlier, thereby running a shorter distance than shorter batters.

Puzzle:

Two batters of the same height are running two. The non-striker is the faster runner. They cross each other at a point that is 23 feet from the striker’s crease. The non-striker completes the first run first, stretching her arm across so that her bat crosses the crease, and turns back in the same motion without losing time, momentum, or speed.

Seconds later, the striker completes the first run in similar fashion, stretching her bat across after having run exactly the same distance as the non-striker had traveled for the first run. She too turns around for the second run without any loss of time or speed.

During the second run, the two cross at another point, which is 16 feet from the non-striker’s original crease. What distance did each batter travel in order to complete the first run?

Devon Conway Returns for New Zealand's 2024 T20 World Cup Squad

Devon Conway Returns for New Zealand’s 2024 T20 World Cup Squad

Devon Conway has been included in New Zealand’s provisional 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Kane Williamson named as captain. The experienced squad also features veterans Tim Southee and Trent Boult, while Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry are the only uncapped players.

Conway’s inclusion comes after he was ruled out of the IPL due to a thumb injury. Williamson, meanwhile, returns to lead the side after missing New Zealand’s last two T20I series.

Fast bowler Adam Milne was ruled out after ankle surgery, while Kyle Jamieson remains unavailable due to a stress fracture in his lower back. Finn Allen has recovered from a back injury, while Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, James Neesham, and Ish Sodhi are the only players from the Pakistan tour who have made the squad.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead believes the squad has all bases covered. “We expect varied conditions in the West Indies and have selected a squad that can adapt,” he said. “Matt Henry has worked hard to earn his recall, while Rachin Ravindra has impressed in recent months.”

RCB’s Kohli and Gill Engage in Friendly Banter Amidst Commanding Victory Over Gujarat Titans

In a thrilling encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) emerged victorious against Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL 2024 campaign. The match was not only marked by RCB’s dominant performance but also by the playful exchanges between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, the captains of the respective teams.

RCB’s chase of a challenging target of 201 was spearheaded by a masterful innings from Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 70 off 44 balls. His aggressive approach, particularly against spinners, showcased his prowess and silenced any doubts regarding his strike rate. His partnership with Will Jacks, who contributed an unbeaten 41-ball century, proved pivotal in RCB’s emphatic victory, which they sealed with nine wickets in hand.

However, amidst Kohli’s batting brilliance, it was his playful exchanges and friendly banter with Gill that added an intriguing subplot to the match. Kohli’s antics, including interrupting Gill during his captaincy stint and teasing him with a shoulder push, provided entertainment for fans both on and off the field. Despite attempts to maintain focus, Gill couldn’t help but respond with a smile and engage in light-hearted exchanges with Kohli.

Their camaraderie was evident throughout the match, with Kohli even walking up to Gill near the boundary ropes for a friendly chat during Gujarat Titans’ innings. The interaction between the two star players showcased a blend of competitiveness and mutual respect, highlighting the camaraderie that exists among players in the IPL.

Kohli’s performance not only propelled RCB to victory but also marked a significant milestone as he reached 500 runs in the season, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top performers. Kohli’s post-match remarks emphasized his focus on team success and his unwavering confidence in his abilities, shutting down any criticisms regarding his approach to the game.

Batting:

Surprises and Omissions:

Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians Captaincy Under Fire

Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians Captaincy Under Fire

Hardik Pandya’s appointment as Mumbai Indians captain has sparked controversy among fans, who have expressed dissatisfaction with his leadership style. Despite being a successful player, Pandya’s on-field decisions and off-field behavior have raised concerns.

One of the main criticisms leveled against Pandya is his inconsistent bowling strategy. In a recent match against Delhi Capitals, he opted not to bowl Jasprit Bumrah immediately, a decision that many believe cost the team the game. Additionally, Pandya has repeatedly changed the playing XI and his own batting slot, indicating a lack of clarity and direction.

Furthermore, Pandya’s criticism of Tilak Varma, the team’s top run-scorer, has drawn criticism. After a 10-run loss to Delhi Capitals, Pandya blamed Varma for not showing enough intent against Axar Patel. However, an analysis of the match reveals that Varma scored 14 runs off Patel’s six deliveries, suggesting that Pandya’s criticism may have been unwarranted.

Some fans believe that Pandya’s leadership style is creating a lack of unity within the team. His decision to send Tim David, an in-form batsman, to bat at No. 7 on a small ground has also been questioned.

Overall, Pandya’s captaincy has been met with mixed reactions. While some fans believe that he has the potential to lead the team to success, others are concerned about his decision-making and leadership skills. Only time will tell whether Pandya can turn things around and prove his critics wrong.

Agarkar-Led Selection Panel Faces Tough Choices for T20 World Cup Squad

Agarkar-Led Selection Panel Faces Tough Choices for T20 World Cup Squad

The Indian cricket team’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, faces a daunting task as the deadline for announcing the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup approaches. With the tournament just over a month away, the committee must strike the right balance in selecting a team capable of challenging for the title.

One of the key decisions involves the choice of the second wicketkeeper-batsman. Rishabh Pant’s impressive form and fitness make him the clear first choice, but the selection committee is torn between Sanju Samson and KL Rahul for the backup role. Rahul’s experience at the top of the order and his willingness to bat in the middle order give him an edge, despite his inconsistent performances in recent times. Samson, on the other hand, has been in scintillating form for Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL.

Another contentious issue is the composition of the seam attack. With Mohammed Shami injured, the Indian bowling unit appears vulnerable. The IPL has exposed the struggles of Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, who have conceded runs at an alarming rate. Despite these concerns, the team management is keen on sticking with the bowlers who have been part of the setup for the past few years.

However, the selectors must also consider the impressive performances of Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar, who have shown promise in bowling the tough overs. The decision between an extra spinner (Ravi Bishnoi) or an extra pacer will depend on the team’s assessment of Hardik Pandya’s seam bowling capabilities.

Finally, the selection committee must address the need for power hitters in the middle order. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been consistent run-getters, but the onus will fall on the likes of Hardik and Ravindra Jadeja to provide the explosive scoring needed to post big totals. The team management had identified Rinku Singh for this role, but his lack of IPL experience may count against him. Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma are also in contention, but their performances in the IPL have been mixed.

The selection committee has a difficult task ahead of them, but they must make the right decisions to give India the best chance of success at the T20 World Cup.
