Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s star spinner, has heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah, calling him a “once-in-a-generation” bowler. Bumrah is set to make his return to Team India for the first time since his impressive performance at the T20 World Cup. The 30-year-old has been named in India’s Test squad against Bangladesh, which will kick off in MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on September 19.

Ashwin, speaking on Vimal Kumar’s official YouTube channel, acknowledged that India has traditionally been a batsman-dominated country. However, he emphasized the importance of celebrating Bumrah’s exceptional talent. “We should celebrate him even more,” Ashwin said.

The India spinner went on to state that Bumrah is currently the most valuable Indian cricketer. “He should be treated as a champion,” Ashwin added.

Bumrah has made a significant impact on Test cricket since his debut in 2018. In 36 Test appearances, he has claimed 159 wickets, showcasing his exceptional bowling skills.

The second Test between India and Bangladesh will be held in Kanpur from September 27.

Mumbai all-rounder Shams Mulani has had a first-class match of his life in the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round. After scoring a match-saving 89 in the first innings for India A against India D, Mulani now starred with the ball and with his quick thinking in the field.

Not only did he pick up four wickets in the game, the 27-year-old was able to inflict a rare type of run out. Yash Dubey, opening the batting for India D, was the victim of a stroke of misfortune and a brilliant piece of game alertness by Mulani.

Striker Ricky Bhui had played a ball bowled by Mulani down the ground, but the ball happened to deflect off non-striker Dubey’s bat. However, Dubey, thinking that the ball had slipped through, attempted to sneak a quick single.

However, an alert Mulani noticed that the ball hadn’t gone too far, and grabbed it and dislodged the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Dubey was late to react, and had to walk back to the pavilion. He was dismissed on a score of 37 off 94 balls.

India A registered a thumping 186-run victory, despite struggling at 94/5 in their first innings. Mulani’s resilient 89 had helped India A to go from there to a total of 290, after which they took a 107-run lead as India D were bowled out for just 183.

Notably, India D captain Shreyas Iyer made a duck, after walking out to bat wearing sunglasses.

In the second innings, centuries by Pratham Singh and Tilak Verma helped India A set a mammoth target of 487. India D were bowled out for 301, with Mulani dismantling the middle order by taking the wickets of Devdutt Padikkal, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, along with his moment of genius by running out Dubey.

Mulani’s all-round performance has been a key factor in India A’s victory in the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable asset to the team.

“Is it because the captain is not their favorite, and they want one of their choice? Do you think the new captain will bring Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, or Mitchell Starc into the team to boost its performance?” Akmal asked.

He stressed that the focus should be on improving the team’s fundamentals, including batting, bowling, and fielding. “If they do not get their basics right, then such blunders will continue to happen, and replacing captains will make no difference,” Akmal said.

Akmal also suggested that the entire team, including the captain, coach, and selectors, should reassess their approach and make necessary changes.

“Everyone should set their direction right and reform their thinking,” he said.

It is worth noting that Babar had stepped down as captain of all formats after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, he was reinstated as white-ball captain ahead of the 2023 T20 World Cup, replacing Shaheen Shah Afridi.

“Former India cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid, etc., should tell their cricket board to keep politics away from cricket. Cricket should not be obstructed by political issues. The fans would love to see India and Pakistan play. It will not only benefit Pakistan, but overall cricket will be benefitted,” Moin said at an event.

However, Moin also emphasized that Pakistan should not send their team to India if India does not participate in the Champions Trophy. “India ought to honor their commitments with the ICC. And if they do not come, then Pakistan should reconsider their decision to participate in any future events slated to be held in India,” he added.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will commence on February 19 and be held entirely in Pakistan, rejecting a hybrid model for India’s matches, as was the case with the Asia Cup 2023.

According to the PCB proposal, the ICC Champion’s Trophy 2025 will be scheduled from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with all matches taking place across three major cities: Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. Sources within the PCB indicate that International Cricket Council (ICC) officials who visited Pakistan to inspect the arrangements for the event have expressed satisfaction with the systems in place.

If the Champions Trophy does remain in Pakistan, it could be the first major international cricket tournament hosted solely by the nation.
