Dhoni’s DRS Accuracy: Not Always Perfect, Says Umpire Chaudhary

MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian cricketer renowned for his astute strategies and tactical brilliance, has been widely acclaimed for his exceptional accuracy in Decision Review System (DRS) calls. However, Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary has shed light on a nuanced perspective, acknowledging that while Dhoni’s DRS calls are often accurate, they are not always infallible.

“It’s not always the case that Dhoni is right,” Chaudhary stated in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra. “Sometimes it’s the other way around, but he’s close to accuracy.”

Chaudhary attributed Dhoni’s proficiency in DRS calls to his deep understanding of the game and his ability to analyze replays effectively. He also praised young Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant for his significant improvement as a keeper, emphasizing the importance of experience and attention to detail in making accurate DRS calls.

“Wicketkeepers have the best spot to keep an eye on the ball,” Chaudhary explained. “They’re still and can follow the ball’s trajectory. In fact, the best umpires sometimes base their decisions on the movement of wicketkeepers because they follow the ball.”

Regarding Dhoni’s potential as an umpire, Chaudhary expressed that the former India captain could excel in the role if he were willing to commit to the time and effort required. “He’s close to accuracy,” Chaudhary said. “He can become a good umpire provided he’s ready to be inside the ground for seven hours.”

However, it remains uncertain whether Dhoni will continue playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) beyond the 2025 season.

Rohit Sharma: Forgetful but Brilliant Cricketer

Rohit Sharma: Forgetful but Brilliant Cricketer

Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team’s captain, is renowned for his calm demeanor and exceptional cricketing intellect. However, he also has a playful reputation for being forgetful. This quirky trait has been humorously highlighted by several cricketers, including Virat Kohli, who has mentioned Rohit’s tendency to misplace items.

Despite his forgetfulness, Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary asserts that Rohit possesses a sharp and intelligent cricketing mind. “Rohit may seem casual, but he’s a very smart player,” Chaudhary said. “His game sense is very good.”

Chaudhary also praised Rohit’s batting skills, saying that he has an incredible “ball-sense.” “He knows exactly when to move forward on a ball,” Chaudhary said. “Look at his short-arm pull shot. Unbelievable!”

Chaudhary recalled a match where Rohit scored over 200 runs, smashing bowlers all around the park. “The balls that were yorkers for others, he was hitting those for sixes,” Chaudhary said. “He’s in a different class.”

“On the day he’s in his flow, he’s a one-man army,” Chaudhary said. “His batting is of a different class. When he’s batting, it feels great to watch.”

Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan’s Excessive Appealing Draws Criticism from Umpire Anil Chaudhary

Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s wicket-keeper, has gained notoriety for his incessant appeals from behind the stumps during matches. This behavior has often drawn the ire of umpires, opponents, and fans alike.

Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary, who has officiated in over 50 international matches across formats, recently shared his thoughts on Rizwan’s tendency to appeal frequently. Chaudhary described Rizwan as someone who “keeps jumping like a pigeon” from behind the stumps.

“He appeals a lot. I even told my fellow umpire to stay aware. Har ball pe chillata hai (He keeps shouting on every ball). Isn’t he the one who puts something like a lipstick? He keeps jumping like a pigeon,” Chaudhary said in a YouTube podcast.

Chaudhary emphasized that a good umpire knows how to handle keepers like Rizwan. “If the umpire is good, these keepers are losers. Aur itna technology aa gaya hai, kyun apna beizatti karwa rahein ho? Ulta seedha nikla jayega, toh log aap hi ka mazak udayenge (When technology has evolved so much, why do you have to make yourself look bad? People tend to make fun of such things),” he added.

Rizwan’s excessive appealing has been a topic of discussion for some time. In 2021, former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized Rizwan’s behavior, calling it “embarrassing.”

Despite the criticism, Rizwan has continued to appeal frequently. In Pakistan’s first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, Rizwan scored an unbeaten 171 in the first innings. However, Bangladesh responded strongly with a total of 565 all out, taking a 117-run first innings lead.
