Mohammed Shami Set for Ranji Trophy Return, Eyes International Comeback

Mohammed Shami Set for Ranji Trophy Return, Eyes International Comeback

Mohammed Shami, India’s premier fast bowler, is poised to make a much-anticipated return to competitive cricket after undergoing ankle surgery earlier this year. The experienced pacer is expected to represent his state team, Bengal, in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches, marking a significant step in his rehabilitation journey.

According to sources, Shami is likely to feature in at least one of Bengal’s initial Ranji fixtures, either against Uttar Pradesh on October 11 in an away game or versus Bihar in Kolkata on October 18. However, considering the short two-day gap between the matches, it is improbable that he will participate in both encounters.

Shami’s return to domestic cricket could potentially pave the way for his international comeback, with a possible appearance in one of the Test matches against New Zealand later this year. The Test series against New Zealand kicks off on October 19 in Bengaluru, with additional matches scheduled in Pune on October 24 and Mumbai on November 1. Shami is anticipated to participate in one of these games before heading to Australia for the major tour.

The 34-year-old speedster last represented India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2022. Since then, Shami has not played any competitive matches due to undergoing ankle surgery in the United Kingdom in February of this year, which ruled him out for at least six months.

Although there were reports suggesting Shami might be available for the Duleep Trophy, it has been determined that he is unlikely to be fit for the tournament. The selectors are cautious about rushing his return prematurely, prioritizing his long-term fitness for the upcoming Test series in Australia.

Shami, one of India’s leading pace bowlers, has taken 229 wickets in 64 Tests, including six five-wicket hauls and 12 four-wicket hauls. His return to the national team will be a major boost for India’s bowling attack, which has been missing his experience and skill.

Mohammed Shami Eyes Domestic Comeback After Ankle Surgery

Mohammed Shami, India’s premier fast bowler, is eager to make his comeback through domestic cricket after recovering from an ankle surgery. Shami, who has been out of action since February, has started bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru but is yet to bowl at full throttle.

“It’s difficult to say when I will be back. I am trying hard but hopefully you will get to see me in Bengal colours before I don the India jersey again,” Shami said while being felicitated by the East Bengal club in Kolkata.

The 33-year-old pacer said the injury came at a time when he was trying to recover from India’s ODI World Cup final defeat. “We never thought the injury would be this serious. The plan was to address it after the T20 World Cup since we had the IPL and the ICC T20 mega event coming almost back-to-back after last year’s World Cup. But it turned worse during the ODI World Cup itself and I also did not find it right to risk playing on with it,” he recalled.

“Even the doctors could not fathom that the injury will take such a serious turn and will take so much time to heal,” the pacer said.

India’s highest wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup, Shami thus had to miss this year’s IPL and also watched India’s T20 World Cup triumph sitting at home. “To tell you frankly, I got tense when South Africa were pulling things back in the final. For a moment memories of our 2023 WC final loss returned to haunt me. But luckily Suryakumar Yadav took that great catch to fetch us the Cup and it took time to sink in that India have actually won it,” Shami stated.

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who was also honoured in the evening, also looked forward to Shami’s comeback. “I am actually surprised to see Shami has played only 101 ODI matches. Somebody with his calibre and talent should have played many more,” Ganguly said.

The former BCCI chief remembered seeing Shami first while playing for Bengal in late 2000s. “Laxmi (Ratan Shukla) was the Bengal skipper then and I immediately told him that this boy (Shami) is an exceptional talent. I am happy to see him converting that talent into performance,” he added.

“It’s said that (Jasprit) Bumrah is the best pacer, but Bumrah has become the best because he got Shami at the other end. So you have pressure from both ends,” Ganguly pointed out.

Mohammed Shami’s Recovery Progress: Stitches Removed, Eager for Next Phase

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has taken a significant step in his recovery from ankle surgery, with his stitches now removed. The 33-year-old pacer, who missed the recent Test series against England and will sit out the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), shared an update on his progress on social media.

“Hello everyone! I wanted to provide an update on my recovery process. It has been 15 days since my surgery, and I recently had my stitches removed. I am thankful for the advancements and looking forward to the next stage of my healing journey,” Shami wrote on Twitter.

Shami underwent surgery last month to address an ankle injury that had been troubling him for some time. Despite the pain, he played a key role in India’s impressive performance at the 2023 ODI World Cup, taking 24 wickets.

The veteran pacer has been a mainstay of the Indian bowling attack for over a decade, with 229 Test wickets, 195 ODI wickets, and 24 T20 wickets to his name. He was recently honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award for his contributions to Indian cricket.

Shami’s absence from the IPL and the upcoming T20 World Cup is a blow to the Indian team. However, the pacer remains optimistic about his recovery and is eager to return to action as soon as possible.

“I am working hard on my rehabilitation and am confident that I will be back on the field soon. Thank you for all your support and well wishes,” Shami added.

Suryakumar Yadav's IPL Availability Uncertain After Ankle Surgery

Suryakumar Yadav’s IPL Availability Uncertain After Ankle Surgery

India’s star T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru following ankle surgery. While his recovery is progressing well, it remains uncertain whether he will be available for the Mumbai Indians’ first two matches in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Mumbai Indians will kick off their campaign on March 24 against last year’s runners-up Gujarat Titans. Yadav, the world’s No. 1 T20 batter, is working diligently at the NCA to regain peak match fitness.

“Surya’s rehabilitation is on track, and he will definitely return to play in the IPL,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. “However, it is still unclear whether the NCA’s Sports Science and Medical Team will clear him to play in the first two away games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad (March 27).”

Yadav’s Instagram posts indicate that he has been engaging in extensive Strength and Conditioning (S&C) routines. However, he has yet to share any batting videos, which would provide a clearer indication of his progress.

“There are still 12 days to go before MI play their first game, but it could be a race against time to get fit by the first match itself,” the source added.

Yadav is a crucial player for both India and the Mumbai Indians. His exceptional strike rate of 171-plus and 2,141 runs in 60 T20 games make him a formidable force. He has also scored four T20I centuries.

India’s chances in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas will heavily depend on Yadav’s performance. Similarly, the Mumbai Indians’ success in the IPL hinges on his availability from the start.

Yadav last played for India in South Africa, where he led the national team in the T20 format.
