Andrey Rublev’s remarkable season has been marked by both triumph and adversity. After capturing his second ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid, the Russian faced a life-threatening health scare that nearly prevented him from competing in Asia.

Rublev underwent surgery just days before his scheduled departure for China, where he was set to play in Hangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai. Doctors initially informed him that he would be unable to play in China due to the severity of his condition, which required a month of recovery time.

However, Rublev defied the odds and made a remarkable return to action in Beijing, where he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the quarterfinals. Despite his impressive performance, Rublev admitted that he is still not fully fit and is hoping to regain his fitness through match play.

The surgery was performed to prevent the amputation of an unspecified limb, Rublev revealed. He was fortunate that the issue was identified within the first few hours, as amputation would have been necessary after five or six hours.

Rublev’s health scare is his second major setback this season. In Madrid, he was hospitalized with inflammation in his throat and a swollen toe, which turned out to be a tonsillar abscess that restricted his airways.

Despite these challenges, Rublev remains determined to finish the season strong. He is currently ranked No. 7 in the Race to Turin and is hoping to qualify for the ATP Finals.

Sinner’s dominance is further highlighted by a comparison with the current ATP Top 10 players. Since the start of last year’s US Open, Sinner has the best record against non-Top 20 players, with a perfect 50-0 record. This statistic underscores his exceptional ability to handle lower-ranked opponents.

Sinner will face No. 96-ranked Bu Yunchaokete of China in the Beijing semifinals on Tuesday. A victory would extend his winning streak to 51 matches and bring him one step closer to another title.

Emma Raducanu’s promising momentum has been halted once again due to a sprained ligament in her left foot. The British tennis star announced her withdrawal from the WTA 1000 in Beijing on Monday, citing the injury sustained during her second-round match at the Hana Bank Korea Open in Seoul.

Raducanu had taken a medical timeout during her victory in Seoul but was forced to retire after losing the first set of her quarterfinal against Daria Kasatkina. The injury has also prevented her from competing in the China Open, where she was scheduled to face Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the second round.

The 2021 US Open champion expressed disappointment over her withdrawal, stating, “I hope to be back as soon as I can.” Raducanu had previously emphasized her excitement for the Asian swing, where she feels at home.

“I stacked the year on the backend heavy, because I’m excited. I thrive in Asia. It’s where I truly feel like home,” she said. “I’m looking forward to going out there and trying to take it.”

Raducanu’s withdrawal marks the fourth Top 10 player to pull out of the Beijing tournament due to injury. Former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina has also withdrawn due to a back problem that ended her US Open prematurely. Rybakina will miss the entire Asian swing but hopes to return for the season-ending WTA Finals.

“Due to an ongoing back injury, I regretfully have to withdraw from the upcoming Asian tournaments,” Rybakina said. “While I’ve been working hard on my recovery, my medical team and I have decided it’s best to prioritize my health at this time.”

Raducanu’s injury is a setback in her quest to improve her ranking. She had moved up 16 spots to No. 54 in this week’s rankings after her performance in Seoul. The British star will now focus on recovering and returning to competition as soon as possible.
