Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Terminates Chandika Hathurusinghe as Head Coach

Two days after suspending Chandika Hathurusinghe, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has terminated his contract as the national team’s head coach. The decision was made on the grounds of misconduct and breach of employment terms.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed revealed that Hathurusinghe had assaulted a Bangladesh cricketer and taken more leaves than stipulated in his contract. The board issued a show-cause notice to Hathurusinghe, seeking an explanation for these alleged offenses.

Hathurusinghe responded to the notice, prompting an emergency board meeting to review the situation. After careful consideration, the BCB deemed Hathurusinghe’s explanation unsatisfactory and unacceptable, finding his actions consistent with misconduct and dereliction of duty.

“His termination comes into immediate effect,” a BCB release stated.

This marks the end of Hathurusinghe’s second stint as Bangladesh coach, despite his contract extending until January 2023. During this tenure, Bangladesh achieved a historic Test series victory in Pakistan. However, the team’s performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup were disappointing.

Phil Simmons has been appointed as the new head coach until the Champions Trophy in February 2025.

Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe Suspended

Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe Suspended

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has suspended head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe for disciplinary reasons. The suspension, effective immediately, will last for 48 hours, after which Hathurusinghe will be “terminated immediately.” Phil Simmons will assume the role of interim head coach until the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Hathurusinghe’s second stint as Bangladesh coach began in February 2022, eliciting mixed reactions from former captains, including current BCB president Faruque Ahmed, who questioned the decision to reappoint him.

Under Hathurusinghe’s leadership, Bangladesh’s performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup were underwhelming. However, he guided the team to a historic 2-0 Test series victory against Pakistan in Pakistan, their first overseas Test series win in 15 years.

Despite this achievement, Bangladesh’s subsequent tour of India resulted in a 2-0 Test series loss and a 3-0 T20I series loss, including a record-breaking defeat in the third match.

Hathurusinghe’s suspension comes amid growing criticism of his coaching methods and the team’s recent performances. The BCB has not yet disclosed the specific disciplinary grounds for his suspension.

Shakib Al Hasan Eligible for Selection in Second India-Bangladesh Test

Shakib Al Hasan Eligible for Selection in Second India-Bangladesh Test

Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the second Test between India and Bangladesh has been the subject of speculation, but head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe has confirmed that the all-rounder is “eligible for selection.”

Shakib’s performance in the first Test in Chennai was below par, with the left-arm spinner bowling only 21 overs and conceding 129 runs without taking a wicket. He also scored 32 and 25 in Bangladesh’s 280-run defeat.

However, Hathurusinghe has dismissed any concerns about Shakib’s fitness, stating that he has not received any official complaints or reports of an injury. “I haven’t heard anything officially or any complaints (about Shakib),” he said. “There is no doubt about that at the moment. I haven’t heard from my physio or from anyone. He’s still eligible for selection.”

Bangladesh are in need of a better batting performance in the second Test, particularly in the first innings. Conditions in Kanpur may help, with the pitch expected to be less lively than the one in Chennai.

Hathurusinghe said the players had talked about their shortcomings and it was about “whether we’re able to do that in the middle. We have our KPIs, what we want, and we normally talk about if you make a start, make it big. That’s the biggest concern, because some of the guys got 30 balls (and then got out). In cricket, it’s the hardest thing to get in. But then, this team, India, has been posing different challenges, so we know that as well. So we have to be better for longer.”

Bangladesh had their left-hand heavy top-order picked apart by India’s quicks in Chennai. They have the option of bringing in the right-hander Mahmudul Hasan Joy but that decision will not be a knee-jerk one.

“Just because of the left-handers, right-handers, is not the thing that we will take into consideration. If we are making a change, whether that batsman, whether Mahmudul Joy or whoever is coming in, what he can bring and who will miss out, and we look at it holistically like that, rather than left or right.”

BCB President Faruque Ahmed Reiterates Call for Hathurusinghe's Removal

BCB President Faruque Ahmed Reiterates Call for Hathurusinghe’s Removal

Faruque Ahmed, the newly appointed Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, has reiterated his stance that Chandika Hathurusinghe should no longer continue as the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team. Ahmed had previously expressed this view before taking up the BCB job.

“I have not moved from my previous stance,” Ahmed said. “I have to see some stuff officially, but I have to speak to my colleagues over the next two or three days and see if we can find someone better than him.”

Ahmed had resigned as the chief selector in 2016 after then-BCB president Nazmul Hassan put in place a two-tier selection panel, reportedly at Hathurusinghe’s request. Hathurusinghe’s current contract as the head coach runs till the end of February 2025.

Ahmed questioned Hathurusinghe’s credibility and background, stating that there was no reason for him to stay as Bangladesh’s coach. He believes that Hathurusinghe’s presence is causing greater damage to the team.

When Hathurusinghe was brought back for a second stint in 2023, Ahmed was one of those who had questioned his return. Despite the BCB showing confidence in Hathurusinghe, Bangladesh’s performance has not improved.

Within a few months of Hathurusinghe’s appointment, there was instability in the dressing room, with Tamim Iqbal retiring and Shakib Al Hasan lashing out at Tamim in the media. Allan Donald soon left his role as fast-bowling coach. Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup performance was also sub-par, with many questioning Hathurusinghe’s decision-making.

Ahmed believes that it was a blunder to bring back Hathurusinghe for a second stint. He feels that Hathurusinghe had left Bangladesh in trouble when he left the job in 2017 and that Bangladesh was merely a stepping stone for him.

Ahmed also expressed his desire to understand if Shakib Al Hasan is willing to play in Bangladesh this year. Shakib was an Awami League member of parliament until the government fell on August 5.

Ahmed is hopeful of Tamim Iqbal’s return to international cricket. He believes that Tamim can still play for two or three more years and that he has leadership qualities.

Bangladesh Head Coach Hathurusinghe to Miss Second Test Against Sri Lanka

Bangladesh Head Coach Hathurusinghe to Miss Second Test Against Sri Lanka

Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe will miss the second and final Test against Sri Lanka, starting in Chattogram on Saturday, due to personal reasons. Assistant coach Nic Pothas will take charge in his absence.

Hathurusinghe’s departure comes after Bangladesh’s heavy 328-run defeat in the first Test in Sylhet. The team had previously won the ODI series but lost the T20I series to Sri Lanka by identical 2-1 margins.

Shakib Al Hasan, who has been out of action since April 2023 due to an eye condition, has been recalled to the Test squad as a replacement for Towhid Hridoy. Hasan Mahmud has also been included in the squad in place of the injured Musfik Hasan, who has a left ankle injury.

Hathurusinghe, who is in his second stint as Bangladesh head coach, has been in charge since February 2023. He previously coached Sri Lanka and served as batting coach for New South Wales in Australia.

Pothas, who joined Bangladesh in April 2023, has previously worked as interim head coach for West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh will be hoping to bounce back from their first Test defeat and level the series in Chattogram. The match will be crucial for both teams, as it could determine the outcome of the series.

Shanto's Century Highlights Bangladesh's Transformation Under His Leadership

Shanto’s Century Highlights Bangladesh’s Transformation Under His Leadership

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s second century as Bangladesh captain, a pivotal moment in his career, has earned him the admiration of his teammates and coach. Shanto’s leadership has brought out the best in him as a batter, according to Mushfiqur Rahim, who witnessed Shanto’s transformation firsthand.

Mushfiqur praised Shanto’s ability to make the most of good starts, noting his impressive innings after reaching the century. He highlighted Shanto’s calm demeanor and strategic thinking, which allowed him to guide Bangladesh to victory.

Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe’s support has also been instrumental in Shanto’s growth. The senior cricketers in the team have embraced Shanto’s leadership, creating a positive atmosphere that fosters success.

Mushfiqur credited Mahmudullah’s contribution in setting the tone for Bangladesh’s chase. He emphasized the importance of experience in handling pressure situations, particularly against top bowlers like Wanindu Hasaranga.

Mushfiqur’s own performance against Hasaranga was crucial in neutralizing Sri Lanka’s main threat. He explained his strategy of using the sweep shot to put pressure on the legspinner.

Shanto’s century and the team’s overall performance reflect the positive changes taking place in Bangladesh cricket. The team’s focus on process and atmosphere, rather than immediate results, is paying dividends.

Bangladesh Prepares for T20 World Cup with Focus on Unknown Pitches

Bangladesh Prepares for T20 World Cup with Focus on Unknown Pitches

With the 2024 T20 World Cup approaching, Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe is meticulously gathering information about the pitches in the USA and Caribbean, particularly in Dallas. The team will also play in New York and Kingstown, where they have limited knowledge of the playing conditions.

To prepare for the tournament, Bangladesh has been playing on batting-friendly surfaces in Sylhet during the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka. Hathurusinghe expects the New York venue to have drop-in pitches similar to those in Adelaide, but there is uncertainty about the conditions in Dallas and Kingstown.

“We are looking at a combination for the World Cup, [especially] how the individuals are fitting in and understanding the game plan and be comfortable with that,” Hathurusinghe said. “We wanted to play on good wickets here. We don’t know about the wickets in America. We play two important games in America. Nobody has any clue [about the pitches]. There’s not much data behind it.”

Hathurusinghe emphasized the need for bowlers to adapt to the expected batting-friendly pitches. In the ongoing series, Sri Lanka scored over 200 runs in the first T20I, but Bangladesh’s bowlers have shown improvement in the second game.

“We know what we can do. We are continually working on [death bowling]. We are playing on different kinds of pitches now. There’s more grass and carry,” Hathurusinghe said. “We wanted to play on wickets that are conducive for high scoring, to get us to understand what areas we need to improve in bowling.”

Bangladesh’s batting has also been impressive, with Soumya Sarkar contributing despite his tendency to get out after getting starts. The Sarkar-Litton Das opening pairing has been Bangladesh’s 16th in T20Is since the start of 2022.

“We were 63 [68] for no loss. You don’t see how many hundreds you made in T20s. As long as they are playing for the team, that’s what we want,” Hathurusinghe said. “[Sarkar] is contributing at the moment. He got [Kusal] Mendis’ wicket. He was crucial for them in both games. [Litton and Sarkar] put their hands up after the first game, [saying that] their approach was wrong. They owned it, and went and played really good cricket.”
