India Eyes Historic Third Straight Border-Gavaskar Trophy Win in Australia

Team India is poised to embark on a historic mission to Australia, aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph on foreign soil. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Indian squad is determined to overcome recent setbacks and secure a berth in the World Test Championship final.

Despite a disappointing 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand, former India pacer and chief selector Chetan Sharma exudes confidence in the team’s ability to excel in Australia. “I am 100 percent sure India will beat Australia in Australia,” Sharma declared. “We have always enjoyed when India tour Australia, South Africa, or England. The best part is that we now enter as series-winning contenders whenever we tour overseas.”

Sharma believes the pressure will be on Australia, not India, as the hosts have been defeated twice in their own backyard by the visiting team. “They must be worried, not us,” he said. “Pressure is on Australia, not India. The pressure is on Pat Cummins, not Rohit Sharma.”

While star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been struggling for form, Sharma remains optimistic about their contributions. “Players like Rohit and Virat are never out of form,” he said. “They are never in a lean or bad patch. These words shouldn’t be used for them. We are thankful to them. They are still doing it.”

Sharma also praised young talents Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who have been thriving under the guidance of experienced players like Kohli and Rohit. “Shubman and Yashasvi have impressed me a lot,” he said. “They have learned a lot from Virat and Rohit while sharing the field and dressing room with them.”

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series will commence with the opening Test in Perth on November 22, followed by a day-night Test at Adelaide Oval from December 6 to 10. The series will then move to The Gabba in Brisbane for the third Test from December 14 to 18, followed by the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30. The fifth and final Test will be held in Sydney, starting on January 3.

Chetan Sharma’s Historic Hat-Trick: A Defining Moment in Indian Cricket

On October 31, 1987, Indian cricket history was etched in gold when Chetan Sharma became the first Indian bowler to claim a hat-trick in a World Cup match. This remarkable feat occurred during a group stage encounter against New Zealand in Nagpur, propelling India to a comfortable nine-wicket victory.

Sharma’s hat-trick unfolded in the 42nd over of New Zealand’s innings. With sharp and accurate deliveries, he clean bowled Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith, and Ewen Chatfield in succession, leaving the Kiwi batsmen in disbelief. His bowling performance played a crucial role in restricting New Zealand to a modest total of 221/9.

India’s batting lineup, led by Sunil Gavaskar’s unbeaten century (103 off 88 balls) and Kris Srikkanth’s 75 off 58, made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 32.1 overs. However, it was Sharma’s hat-trick that stole the show, becoming the defining moment of the match.

Sharma’s hat-trick not only marked a historic milestone for Indian cricket but also set a high standard for future generations. Since then, three other Indian bowlers have achieved hat-tricks in ODIs: Kapil Dev, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav (twice).

Mohammed Shami remains the only Indian bowler after Sharma to take a hat-trick in an ODI World Cup. During the 2019 World Cup, Shami dismissed Mohammad Nabi, Aftab Alam, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in three consecutive deliveries against Afghanistan, echoing Sharma’s historic achievement.

Chetan Sharma’s hat-trick in the 1987 World Cup remains an iconic moment in Indian cricket history, showcasing the skill, determination, and legacy of one of the country’s greatest bowlers.

India to Make Australia Run in Their Own Backyard, Says Chetan Sharma

India to Make Australia Run in Their Own Backyard, Says Chetan Sharma

Team India is poised to embark on a highly anticipated five-match Test series against Australia later this year. The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy holds immense significance, as Australia has historically held an edge over India in Test bilaterals. However, India has emerged victorious in the last four Test series between the two nations, including back-to-back wins on Australian soil.

Former Team India chief selector Chetan Sharma believes that the Rohit Sharma-led side has the potential to dominate Australia in their own backyard. Sharma, who was the chief selector during India’s last tour of Australia, feels that the visitors will have the upper hand, having consistently outplayed the Pat Cummins-led side in recent times.

“We have built a reputation as the No.1-ranked team in the world,” Sharma said. “We will not only give them a tough fight but we will make them run in their own backyard. I have a lot of confidence in the players.”

Sharma also highlighted the strength of India’s bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah. “Bowlers will win you Test matches,” he said. “Right now, Team India has the best bowling attack in the world. We have seen it in recent times that we have bowlers to bowl the opposition out for even 150. Our bowlers are our trump card.”

This will be the first time since the early 1990s that India will play a five-match Test series in Australia. India won the last two tours of Australia with an identical scoreline of 2-1. In 2018-19, the Virat Kohli-led side won the final and decisive Test in Sydney. On the other hand, Kohli only played one match of the last tour as Ajinkya Rahane guided the team to victory in his absence.
