LeBron James and Son Bronny Make History in Lakers’ Loss to Cavaliers
In a highly anticipated homecoming for LeBron James and his son Bronny, the Los Angeles Lakers suffered a disappointing 110-134 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers in an NBA matchup. Despite the setback, the game marked a historic moment as Bronny James scored his first NBA basket for the Lakers.
The Cavaliers, led by Evan Mobley’s 25 points and Donovan Mitchell’s 24 points and seven assists, dominated the game from start to finish. Cleveland’s impressive start to the season, with a 5-0 record, is their best since the 2016-17 campaign when LeBron James was still wearing their jersey.
In a heartwarming moment, LeBron James checked out of the game in the fourth quarter to witness his son receive a standing ovation from the Cleveland crowd. The Cavaliers fans chanted “We want Bronny!” as the younger James registered two assists and then drained his first professional basket, a 14-foot shot from the left corner with two minutes remaining.
“It was insane. Much more than I anticipated. The chants really got me. I was straight-faced, but I felt it and it felt pretty good,” Bronny said after the game.
LeBron James expressed his pride in his son’s accomplishment, saying, “To see him get his first NBA basket in this arena, where he grew up not too far away from here, that’s an unbelievable moment. Unbelievable moment for him, and for our family it’s just pretty cool to be a part of it.”
Last week, LeBron and Bronny became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game. However, the Lakers have faced criticism for drafting Bronny in the second round after he played one year at USC.
Despite the loss, Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson praised the historic moment, saying, “It’s a beautiful story. Two kids of my own, I can’t even imagine. I enjoy playing in the backyard with my son. To do it on an NBA court? Beautiful story. I love it. I think we should celebrate it.”
