Former Indian all-rounders Yuvraj Singh and Ravi Shastri have heaped praise on wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson for his scintillating century in the first T20I against South Africa. Samson’s blistering knock of 107 off just 50 balls powered India to a commanding 61-run victory in Durban.

Samson, who has been given a new lease of life as an opener, has now become the first Indian and fourth overall to score consecutive centuries in T20Is. His remarkable feat has earned him accolades from cricket legends.

“Sanju you beauty! Such a treat to watch that stroke play Very well played @IamSanjuSamson #IndVSSa,” tweeted Yuvraj Singh.

Ravi Shastri also took to Twitter to express his admiration for Samson’s performance. “Sanjooo….. Samsonnn. Special. #SanjuSamson #SAvsIND,” he wrote.

Samson’s century in Durban was his second in as many games, having scored 111 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad last month. Prior to Samson, only Gustav Mckeon (France), Rilee Rossouw (South Africa), and Phil Salt (England) had achieved the rare feat of scoring consecutive T20I centuries.

Samson’s knock was particularly impressive considering the self-doubt he had faced in the past about his ability to replicate his IPL success at the international level.

“Honestly in my career, I have had more failures than success. When you go through those failures, you start doubting yourself. People obviously say things, social media definitely plays its role, and then you also start thinking about it,” Samson said after the match.

“It’s like ‘Sanju, are you not made for international level? You are doing well in the IPL, why is it not happening in international (cricket)?’ I did have lots of thoughts, but after so many years of experience, I know my abilities.”

Samson’s confidence and determination have paid off, and he is now proving to be a valuable asset for the Indian team. His ability to score runs quickly and consistently makes him a dangerous player in the shortest format of the game.

You had a crazy amount of belief that you could execute whatever you wanted to on a cricket field, and you normally did.”

Kohli recalled an unforgettable incident during an RCB match in Kolkata in 2016, where De Villiers’ extraordinary six off Sunil Narine left him in awe. “You played and missed a couple and told me during a timeout that you weren’t picking him too well. I felt I was, so I remember telling you to give me the strike and I would try and hit boundaries off him,” Kohli wrote. “In the first over Narine bowled after the timeout, I was ready at the non-striker’s end thinking you were definitely giving me a single. So, imagine my surprise when you back away to the leg side, Sunil follows you and you slog sweep him over square leg for a 94-metre six!”

Kohli also highlighted De Villiers’ unwavering commitment to his team. “Your drive to want to be the guy to win the game for your team was tremendous and something I learned a lot from,” he said. “I remember taking from you that it doesn’t matter what you have done in the last four games, it is about how you approach the game today. It is about always being positive, always taking the game on and finding a way to get the job done.”

Kohli concluded his letter by expressing his admiration for De Villiers’ impact on the game. “A lot of players can have impressive numbers but very few have an impact on the psyche of those watching. For me, that is the highest value you can have as a cricketer and that is what makes you so special,” he wrote. “You are in the Hall of Fame for the impact you have left on the game and I don’t think there is anything more special for a cricketer than to have that honour.”

India has a rich history in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes, having won the tournament in 2005. Other previous winners include England and South Africa, who have won the title five times each. The tournament has also witnessed some of the biggest names in cricket, including Brian Lara, Wasim Akram, Shane Warne, Sachin Tendulkar, M.S. Dhoni, and Anil Kumble.

The Hong Kong Cricket Sixes is a unique tournament, with matches played between two teams of six players. Each game consists of a maximum of five overs for each side. However, the title clash will see each team bowl five overs of eight balls, up from the six deliveries in normal matches.

Barring the wicket-keeper, every member of the fielding side must bowl one over. Wides and no-balls count as two runs. Batsmen are forced to retire at 31 runs but can come back in once all other batsmen have been dismissed or have retired.
