Indian Wushu Team Triumphs at Junior World Championship, Defeating China and Iran
New Delhi: The Indian wushu team has made history at the Junior World Wushu Championship held in Brunei, bagging an impressive seven medals, including two golds, one silver, and four bronzes. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian wushu, as it is the first time that Indian athletes have defeated powerhouses China and Iran in certain weight categories.
The 24-member Indian contingent showcased their exceptional skills and determination throughout the tournament, which ran from September 22-30. Aryan, competing in the Boys’ Group Junior 48 kg weight category, emerged victorious after a thrilling contest against Gong Huanran from China. Shaurya also claimed a gold medal in the Boys 48kg (children) section, triumphing over his Iranian opponent Alireza Zamani.
Nang Mingbi Borphukan added to India’s medal tally with a silver medal in the Taolu Jian Shu C Group event. Tanish Nagar narrowly missed out on a gold medal, settling for bronze in the 56 kg weight class after losing to Abdulkhamid Odilov. Abhijeet (60kg), Divyanshi (60kg women), and Yuvraj (42kg) also contributed to India’s success with bronze medals.
The Indian Wushu Association hailed the team’s performance as a testament to their hard work and dedication. The association noted that the team’s success is a result of the growing popularity of wushu in India and the increasing support for the sport from the government and private sponsors.
