Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) have bolstered their squad for the remainder of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 by signing local offspinner Bryan Charles as a replacement for the injured Dwayne Bravo.

Bravo, a veteran all-rounder, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday after suffering a groin injury during TKR’s match against St. Lucia Kings. The injury occurred while Bravo attempted to catch Kings’ captain Faf du Plessis.

Charles, 29, is a promising offspinner who plays for Trinidad & Tobago in domestic cricket. While he has yet to make his T20 debut, he has impressed with his red-ball skills. Earlier this year, he earned a call-up to the West Indies Test side for the home series against South Africa.

In the West Indies four-day championship, Charles emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Trinidad & Tobago, claiming 31 wickets in seven games at an impressive average of 17. His tally included a career-best match haul of 13 wickets against Jamaica in Kingston in April.

Charles’ signing could provide cover for Sunil Narine, who has missed TKR’s last three games due to a quad complaint. In Narine’s absence, Kieron Pollard has utilized Tim David as an offspinner with the new ball. However, with three left-handers in Barbados Royals’ top six, Charles could be considered for selection if Narine remains unfit for the playoffs.

Unfortunately, TKR’s injury woes have extended to David, who appeared to injure his side and head while saving a six at the boundary in their last match. Pollard expressed concern over the team’s mounting injuries, including Narine, Russell, and his own physical condition.

Despite the setbacks, Pollard emphasized that TKR will continue to fight and rely on the support of their medical staff to keep players on the field.

Bravo’s stint with KKR marks his second coaching role in the IPL. He joined CSK in 2011, retired from the franchise in 2022, and returned in 2023 as the bowling coach. The decorated Caribbean star has lifted four IPL titles with CSK in various roles.

With 183 wickets, Bravo is the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. He is also the first player to win two purple caps in the tournament, in 2013 and 2015. Bravo expressed his excitement about the new role, saying, “I’ve been part of the Trinbago Knight Riders for the last 10 years in the CPL. Having played for and against the Knight Riders in various leagues, I have a lot of respect for how they operate. The owners’ passion, the professionalism of the management, and the family-like environment make it a special place.”

This will be Bravo’s second coaching stint in the IPL. After retiring from the IPL as a player in 2022, he joined CSK as their bowling coach for the 2023 season. Having won the IPL three times as a player, Bravo continued his success in his first coaching assignment, guiding CSK to victory over defending champions Gujarat Titans in 2023.

Widely regarded as one of the best death bowlers in T20 cricket, Bravo is the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history and the first player to win two purple caps in the tournament. With over 500 T20 appearances to his name, he is known for his tactical acumen and motivational skills, qualities that earned him the West Indies captaincy.

Bravo retired from international cricket after the 2021 T20 World Cup but continued to play in T20 leagues. He also played a key role as a consultant coach for Afghanistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup, helping the team reach the semi-finals for the first time.

“Pathirana is very special. I call him Baby Malinga. I also call him Baby GOAT (Greatest of All Time). He is not someone you try to coach because he has a natural ability and skill,” Bravo said.

Bravo also pointed out that Bangladesh veteran Mustafizur Rahman is also very special to him. He has taken 11 wickets in six games in the ongoing season.

“He has the reputation of having one of the best slower balls in the world. You don’t try to over-coach these players. You just empower them with knowledge, and information and try to keep it simple,” he added.

The West Indies legend is also impressed with pacer Tushar Deshpade, who made a name for himself with a breakthrough IPL 2023. He took 21 wickets in 16 games to guide CSK to their fifth title win.
