Sabalenka Rallies to Reach Fourth Round at Late-Night U.S. Open

Aryna Sabalenka’s U.S. Open campaign got off to a rocky start, but the No. 2 seed rallied to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the third round. The match, which began at 12:07 a.m. and ended at 1:48 a.m., was the second-latest ending to a women’s match in U.S. Open history.

Sabalenka struggled early on, dropping the first set in just 30 minutes. However, she regained her composure in the second set, winning 10 straight games to take a commanding lead. Alexandrova briefly threatened a comeback in the third set, but Sabalenka held firm to secure the victory.

The late start was due to a lengthy match between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton in the afternoon session. Under a new late-night match policy, the tournament referee has the discretion to move matches that haven’t started by 11:15 p.m. However, Sabalenka and Alexandrova remained on Arthur Ashe Stadium, despite the late hour.

Sabalenka expressed her frustration with the late start, saying she would prefer to play in the opener of the night session. However, she acknowledged that Alexandrova’s strong start had also contributed to the late finish.

“She just crushed it. She played so well,” Sabalenka said.

Despite the late night, Sabalenka remained optimistic about her chances in the tournament. She said she hoped to be in bed by 4 a.m. and sleep as long as she could.

“Technically, I did my practice session today, so I’m good for tomorrow, right?” she joked.

Sabalenka’s victory sets up a fourth-round clash with No. 33 seed Elise Mertens. The match is scheduled for Sunday.

Danielle Collins Reaches Miami Open Final in Farewell Tour Triumph

Danielle Collins’ farewell tour has reached its peak at the Miami Open, where the American has stormed into her first WTA 1000 final. Collins’ impressive run continued with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova, setting up a championship clash with 2023 finalist Elena Rybakina.

Collins’ announcement that 2024 would be her final season has been followed by some of her best tennis. The unseeded American has dismissed three seeds en route to the semis, including former world No. 4 Caroline Garcia. Against Alexandrova, Collins’ unyielding determination and tactical brilliance proved too much for the Russian.

Alexandrova, who had stunned world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula, was unable to match Collins’ consistency and precision. Collins broke serve twice in the opening set, forcing Alexandrova into errors. The second set was even more one-sided, as Collins opened with another break and powered to victory with a total of 21 winners to 17 unforced errors.

Collins’ victory marks her biggest final since the 2022 Australian Open, where she finished runner-up to Ashleigh Barty. She will now face No. 4 seed Rybakina, who leads their head-to-head record 3-1. Collins’ lone win over the Kazakh came in their first meeting in San Jose in 2021.

Collins’ success in Miami is a testament to her resilience and determination. Despite announcing her retirement, she has played with renewed vigor and focus. Her ability to overcome adversity and perform at her best under pressure is a testament to her character and unwavering spirit.

Alexandrova Stuns Swiatek, Claims First Win Over Reigning No. 1

World No. 16 Ekaterina Alexandrova stunned the tennis world on Monday night, defeating reigning No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 at the Miami Open. The 6-4, 6-2 victory marked Alexandrova’s first career win over a reigning top-ranked player.

Alexandrova, a 27-year-old Russian, played with remarkable composure and aggression throughout the match. She broke Swiatek’s serve twice in the first set and held her own serve comfortably. In the second set, Alexandrova continued to dominate, breaking Swiatek’s serve twice more and closing out the match with a powerful forehand winner.

Swiatek, who had won 17 consecutive matches and three consecutive WTA 1000 titles, struggled to find her rhythm against Alexandrova’s relentless pressure. The Polish star committed 25 unforced errors, compared to just 10 for Alexandrova.

Alexandrova’s victory is a testament to her hard work and determination. She has been steadily climbing the WTA rankings in recent years and has now reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. Her win over Swiatek is a major confidence boost and could propel her to even greater heights in the future.

The upset has sent shockwaves through the tennis world and has opened up the draw at the Miami Open. Alexandrova will face either No. 8 seed Danielle Collins or No. 10 seed Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals. With her newfound confidence, Alexandrova will be a formidable opponent for any player she faces.
