Rohit, Kohli to Lead Star-Studded Duleep Trophy Squad Ahead of Bangladesh Tests

India’s Test Stalwarts Set to Grace Duleep Trophy in Preparation for Bangladesh Series

In anticipation of India’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, the Duleep Trophy, scheduled to commence on September 5 in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, is set to feature a star-studded lineup. India captain Rohit Sharma and former skipper Virat Kohli are expected to lead the charge, alongside a host of other prominent players.

The tournament will serve as a crucial platform for the Indian selectors to assess the form and readiness of key players ahead of the Bangladesh series. The Indian Express reports that the Duleep Trophy will showcase the talents of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, and Kuldeep Yadav.

However, ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah will not participate in the Duleep Trophy due to an extended rest period. The senior selection committee will deliberate on Bumrah’s availability for the two-Test series against Bangladesh.

With India facing a demanding schedule of 10 Test matches over the next four months, including five against Australia, the Duleep Trophy will provide invaluable match practice for the players. The tournament will run from September 5 to September 24, offering ample opportunity for the players to showcase their skills and prepare for the challenges ahead.

The inclusion of top players is expected to enhance the competitiveness and appeal of the Duleep Trophy. The tournament will provide a glimpse of India’s Test team in the making, as the players strive to prove their worth and secure their place in the squad for the Bangladesh series.

The first Test between India and Bangladesh will commence in Chennai on September 19. The Duleep Trophy will serve as a crucial stepping stone for the Indian team as they gear up for this important series.

Sri Lanka's Spinners and Top-Order Batters Triumph Over India in ODI Series

Sri Lanka’s Spinners and Top-Order Batters Triumph Over India in ODI Series

Sri Lanka’s recent ODI series victory over India marked a significant milestone for the team, breaking a 27-year drought against their formidable rivals. Captain Charith Asalanka attributed the triumph to the team’s improved top-order batting and the exceptional performance of their spinners.

The series was played on pitches that favored spin bowling, and Sri Lanka’s spinners took full advantage. Jeffrey Vandersay, Dunith Wellalage, and Asalanka himself were the top wicket-takers, claiming 27 of the 30 Indian wickets that fell. Despite the absence of premier spinner Wanindu Hasaranga in two of the matches, the Sri Lankan spinners proved their mettle.

However, it was not just the spinners who contributed to the victory. Sri Lanka’s top-order batters provided solid platforms, with Avishka Fernando scoring 96 in the third match, Pathum Nissanka contributing 101 runs, and Kusal Mendis adding 103.

“On these pitches, until the ball gets a little older, it’s easier to bat, and it takes less spin,” Asalanka explained. “What we planned was for someone in the top order to get a big score, and for others around him to play around him and get to a good score.”

The improved top-order performance was a significant change from the past, where Sri Lanka often struggled to provide a solid foundation for their middle order. Asalanka credited the team’s newfound freedom and positive environment for the turnaround.

“As a team we tried to create a good environment, after talking to the coach,” Asalanka said. “We tried to give a lot of freedom to our players and to show their talent. We don’t put much pressure on them.”

The ODI series victory was a major boost for Sri Lanka, who had been thrashed 3-0 in the preceding T20I series. Asalanka expressed confidence that the team can continue to compete against the best when they play to their potential.

Rohit Sharma's Hilarious Antics Lighten Up India's ODI Win

Rohit Sharma’s Hilarious Antics Lighten Up India’s ODI Win

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma has once again captured the spotlight with his antics on the field. This time, it was not a witty remark caught on the stump mic, but a humorous act that left everyone in stitches.

During the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Washington Sundar pulled back twice in a row while preparing to bowl a delivery. On the first occasion, Rohit, stationed at first slip, remained composed. However, the second time Sundar pulled back, Rohit jokingly ran towards him as if to hit him.

The incident was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media. Rohit’s playful gesture showcased his lighthearted nature and his ability to bring a smile to the faces of his teammates and fans alike.

Meanwhile, India’s spinners, led by Washington Sundar, put the Sri Lankan batters to the test. Sundar claimed three wickets for 30 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav picked up two for 33. The Lankan batters struggled to cope with the spin duo, who exploited the conditions to their advantage.

Sri Lanka’s innings was anchored by a 72-run partnership between Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis for the seventh wicket. Wellalage scored 39 runs, while Mendis contributed 40. However, their efforts were not enough to propel Sri Lanka to a competitive total, as they were restricted to 240 for nine.

India’s bowlers were disciplined throughout the innings, with Mohammed Siraj striking early to remove Pathum Nissanka. Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis provided some resistance, but the spinners eventually took control of the game.

The Indian bowlers also struggled in the final five overs, conceding 44 runs. However, they managed to secure a comfortable victory, with Sri Lanka falling short by 43 runs.

Vandersay's Six-Wicket Haul Powers Sri Lanka to ODI Victory Over India

Vandersay’s Six-Wicket Haul Powers Sri Lanka to ODI Victory Over India

Sri Lanka’s Jeffrey Vandersay emerged as the hero in the second ODI against India, leading his team to a remarkable 32-run victory in Colombo. Vandersay’s exceptional six-wicket haul for just 33 runs dismantled the Indian batting lineup, giving Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Chasing a target of 241 on a spin-friendly pitch, India’s promising start was quickly extinguished by Vandersay’s brilliance. Rohit Sharma’s aggressive 64 off 44 balls had set the tone for India, but his dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse.

From a comfortable 97 for one, India lost six wickets for just 50 runs in 10 overs. Vandersay, filling in for the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, exploited the conditions and the Indian batsmen’s vulnerabilities, claiming the crucial wickets of Shivam Dube, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer.

Despite the top-order collapse, Axar Patel attempted a counter-attack with a resilient 44 off 44 balls, but his efforts were cut short by Charith Asalanka.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s batting effort had been challenged by India’s spinners, particularly Washington Sundar (3/30) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/33). Despite struggling at 136 for six, a crucial 72-run partnership between Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis provided the hosts with a competitive total of 240 for nine.

Vandersay’s exceptional performance and Sri Lanka’s resilience on a difficult pitch proved too much for India, who were bowled out for 208 in 42.2 overs. The victory gives Sri Lanka a crucial advantage in the series, with the third and final ODI scheduled for Tuesday.

Suryakumar Yadav Anticipates Rohit Sharma's One-Liners in ODI Series

Suryakumar Yadav Anticipates Rohit Sharma’s One-Liners in ODI Series

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has returned home after leading the team to a series sweep over Sri Lanka. Yadav, who is not part of the ODI leg of the tour, expressed his excitement for the upcoming matches and anticipation for Rohit Sharma’s signature one-liners.

“All the best for ODIs, I will watch the complete series and will wait for your one-liners,” Yadav said in a video shared by the BCCI. “I know you will be standing near the stump mic, there are several new guys in the team. Hopefully, we will get to listen to several more one-liners.”

Yadav’s appointment as India’s full-time T20I skipper sparked debate before the BCCI announced the white-ball squads for the Sri Lanka tour. However, Yadav’s performance in the T20I leg, where India whitewashed Sri Lanka 3-0, silenced the critics.

In the final match of the series, Yadav emerged as an unlikely bowling hero. With Sri Lanka needing just six runs to win in the last over, Yadav brought himself on to bowl and picked up two wickets, restricting Sri Lanka to five runs and forcing a ‘Super Over’ tie-breaker. Yadav’s boundary in the ‘Super Over’ ultimately sealed India’s victory.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to the squad for the ODIs, India will aim to maintain their winning momentum. The first ODI will be played on Friday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, followed by the second and third matches on July 4 and 7 at the same venue.

Suryakumar Yadav Temporary Captain, Shubman Gill Groomed for Long-Term Role

Suryakumar Yadav Temporary Captain, Shubman Gill Groomed for Long-Term Role

Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris believes that Suryakumar Yadav’s appointment as India’s T20I captain is a temporary measure, with Gautam Gambhir grooming Shubman Gill as the long-term leader.

Styris, speaking to India Today, said, “I think he’s a short-term option. I don’t think Gambhir has a natural captain amongst the players that he has right now.”

He added, “He’s buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain. Someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he’s not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience.”

Suryakumar Yadav, fondly known as SKY, was appointed India’s T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format. Gill was named vice-captain for both the T20Is and ODIs on the Sri Lanka tour.

Styris believes that Gill has the potential to be India’s long-term captain, but he needs more experience. “You know, someone like Gill I think could do the job for 10 years for India, but he’s not quite ready right now, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with a bit more experience,” he said.

SKY, at 33, is older than Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, who is 37. Therefore, developing a long-term captain for the future appears to be a sensible move by Gambhir.

Gill captained India for the first time during the post-T20 World Cup tour to Zimbabwe, where India won the five-match series 4-1. Earlier in the year, Gill had captained IPL franchise Gujarat Titans to a disappointing 8th-place finish.

Styris mentioned that despite the long-term vision, SKY could remain India’s T20I captain till the next T20 World Cup in 2026. “If he (SKY) does a decent enough job, then he might be the captain at the next T20 World Cup. And then after that, you can look at Gill or any of the other potential options around. But yeah, I think it’s a really clever decision,” said Styris.

India’s three-match T20I tour of Sri Lanka gets underway on Saturday, July 27.

Suryakumar Yadav: A Bowlers' Captain Empowering India's T20I Team

Suryakumar Yadav: A Bowlers’ Captain Empowering India’s T20I Team

India’s newly appointed T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, has earned praise from all-rounder Axar Patel for his leadership style. Patel described Yadav as a “bowlers’ captain” who empowers his bowlers to execute their plans with confidence.

In the recently concluded first T20I against Sri Lanka, Patel witnessed firsthand Yadav’s approach. “He gives you free hand (in a way) that you decide first,” Patel said. “Whenever you get hit, he comes and says that it was a good ball. He keeps giving you inputs.”

Patel emphasized the importance of this support for bowlers, as it instills confidence and allows them to take risks. “As a bowler, you get confidence from that if the captain is backing you and telling you that you can do this,” he said.

Patel also highlighted the team’s focus on maximizing its batting combinations. In the first T20I, India experimented with a batting order that featured a balanced mix of left-handed and right-handed batters. This strategy aims to keep the opposition bowlers guessing and maintain a consistent scoring rate.

“Our team has four lefties and four righties,” Patel explained. “If there is a left-right combination (in the middle), it becomes very hard for the bowlers to maintain the line and lengths consistently.”

Patel also touched upon the team’s new coaching staff, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir. While acknowledging that there will be some changes in approach, Patel emphasized that the team’s core values will remain intact.

“When we were talking in the team meeting, they also said the same thing that the coach and captain keep changing but the team remains the same and the 11 or 15 players who stay, they have to do it,” Patel said. “They have told us that we will play the way we have been playing.”

Gautam Gambhir Appointed as India's New Head Coach

Gautam Gambhir Appointed as India’s New Head Coach

Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, will take over as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team on July 27th. He will lead the team in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, followed by a three-match ODI series starting on August 2nd. Gambhir replaces Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended after India’s victory at the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gambhir, who was a key member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning teams, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa has praised Gambhir’s leadership qualities, describing him as “approachable” and “empathetic.”

Uthappa, who played under Gambhir’s captaincy at Kolkata Knight Riders, said, “He has been an incredible man manager. He is someone who is always available, he is very empathetic, and he is there for his players.”

Uthappa believes that Gambhir’s leadership style will be different from Dravid’s, but equally effective. “I think he will be a very fair leader and he is someone who provides security to his group,” he said.

Gambhir’s appointment has been met with mixed reactions. Some experts believe that his aggressive and outspoken nature may not be suitable for the role of head coach. However, others believe that his passion and intensity will be beneficial for the team.

It remains to be seen how Gambhir will perform as India’s head coach. However, his experience as a player and his strong leadership qualities suggest that he has the potential to be successful.

India's Deepti Sharma: One Game at a Time in Women's T20 Asia Cup

India’s Deepti Sharma: One Game at a Time in Women’s T20 Asia Cup

India’s senior all-rounder Deepti Sharma has emphasized the team’s strategy of taking each game at a time in the ongoing Women’s T20 Asia Cup. She believes that the conditions in Sri Lanka have remained largely unchanged since their previous tour in June 2022.

After a resounding 82-run victory over Nepal on Tuesday, India secured their place in the semifinals. Shafali Verma’s blistering 81 off 48 balls and Deepti’s impressive 3/13 bowling performance were instrumental in the win.

“From the first game, we’ve been confident about each match, every situation, and the conditions,” Deepti said after the match. “We’re looking forward to the semifinals as well.”

Deepti noted that the pitches and conditions in Sri Lanka have not changed significantly since their last visit. “Nothing has changed,” she said. “We’re just keeping it simple and focusing on the next match.”

The right-arm off-spinner has been in top form, leading the bowling charts with eight wickets in three matches. She attributes her success to her willingness to bowl in any situation.

“I’m always ready to bowl in any kind of situation,” Deepti said. “I like to take challenges head-on. I’m enjoying each match, planning accordingly, and applying what we discuss in meetings.”

Deepti also praised the team’s batting unit, which has performed consistently throughout the tournament. “If we win the toss, we take a positive approach from the start,” she said. “As a batting unit, we’ve been doing really well from the first game and we’ve finished well too.”

India will now face Thailand in the semifinals on Thursday, October 13. Deepti believes that the team is well-prepared and confident of continuing their winning streak.

Suryakumar Yadav Named India's T20I Captain, Pandya Embraces Decision

Suryakumar Yadav Named India’s T20I Captain, Pandya Embraces Decision

Hardik Pandya’s leadership aspirations have faced another setback after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. This decision has sparked speculation about the potential impact on the relationship between Pandya and Yadav.

However, a heartwarming moment captured on video before the team’s departure to Sri Lanka has eased concerns. In the video, Pandya and Yadav are seen shaking hands and embracing, indicating that there is no animosity between them.

At a pre-departure press conference, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the rationale behind the decision to appoint Yadav as captain. He cited Yadav’s impressive performances, his cricketing acumen, and his status as one of the world’s leading T20 batters.

Agarkar also hinted that fitness played a role in the decision, as Yadav is more likely to be available for all matches. He emphasized that Pandya remains a crucial player for India, despite not being named captain.

“In regards to Hardik, he’s still a very important player for us and that’s what we want him to be, that player that he can be because those sorts of skill-sets are very difficult to find,” said Agarkar.

India’s tour of Sri Lanka will commence with the first T20I on July 27. The three-match T20I series will be followed by a three-match ODI series.
